Amazeed by this chemistrt review book. It's like a large textbook, condensed in a smaller version but you have everything you need at your finger tips. I need to refresh my my mind on some basic chem for a next year, pre entrance exam for nursing and I have to say is "I don't need to take a class." The author explains everything in lay terms and you understand, quickly. Even if you have to read certain things over again, you pretty much get it after looking the material over for the third time. I read the first two chapters and mostly everything is still in my mind. The author makes chemistry interesting by using real life examples to reinforce the material. He has the gift of gab and ANYONE who is struggling with chemistry whether it's high school and college chem, this book with HELP you get an A. I'm very impressed and happy that I bought. But I also want to thank the folks before me that reviewed this book. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have bought it. THANKS GUYS!!!!!

This book has helped me understand Chemistry better than the teacher did! The way the author explains it, he makes it very easy and I am a novice in this area. Whenever my teacher confuses me, I don't worry because I know that this book will explain it to where I can understand! I am going to buy Physics next!

This is actually not a bad book, the only reason I give three stars is that its meant for students with little or no chemistry background. Its a good book for students of chemistry 101 or maybe even 111.
Its clear that the author wrote the book with the student in mind. The author explains the chemistry concepts very well so that even the least chemistry orientated can learn a thing or two.

This book was written with the student in mind. It just makes sense. The book is full of examples and explanations. This probably saved my Chemistry grade and helped me understand everything for the final. The book is seriously amazing. If you need help in Chemistry, you HAVE TO get this book. I swear, you won't regret it.
The book makes it seem like you have a tutor teaching it to you.

this easy to read book makes me realize that i actually fall into one of the 12 classic patterns that time and again hold me back from advancing ahead. Once I'm aware, it's not as hard anymore to break the patterns in order to break through the self-constructed limitations. The title of the book sounds terrible, "bad" habits ought to be revised into "hard-to-break" or "patternized" habits.

Are you wondering why you weren't able to advance in your career? Do you know why you are what you are? Do you really want to break through your career impasse? This is THE BOOK to read.
The authors talk about 12 different behaviors and personalities of people. You can understand the dynamics of a specific behavior or pattern, its origin and ways to overcome those patterns. This book provides deep insights regarding certain behaviors - with stories and characters to illustrate each one of them. When you read about these characters, you can also relate them to people whom you meet or work with.
I feel that some of these habits are possessed only by 'bad' people. I do not understand the rationale behind the title which says "12 bad habits that hold good people back".
I wish they had trimmed down the unwanted content and increased the font size. It was a bit difficult to read and sustain attention because of the small font size.
If you think that you are not advancing in your career - in spite of working hard, in spite of sacrificing all your personal time, in spite of being so passionate about work - this book is for YOU.

This book is written by psychologists and is very dry and unengaging. You probably already know it is an old emotional issue behind your troublesome behavior at work. For actual helpful tips, try reading "The Power of Letting Go" by Vredevelt instead. It is right to the point, unlike this old-school freudian book.

I loved reading this book and completed it about half the time it usually takes me to read a book. The more I read the book the more I nodded in agreement of the bad habits that people make.
I realized that I am too modest and have been looked over a work and passed up for better positions because I am very relunctant to talk about myself.
What this book has done for me is given me the confidence to talk about myself in a positive light. The book gives you advice on different situations such as networking events, presentations and job-interviews.
After reading this book I am sure that I will reference it in the future and for that I am happy that I bought the book and not borrowed it from the library. I highly recommend this book for the ambitious person.

I am about to read this book, but I attended Peggy Klaus' seminar today at work on the same subject and I have to say it was life altering!
In fact, people would generally classify me as reserved.
But when I came back to my office after the seminar, I was firing off decisions and commands like Meryl Streep in Prada!
I am sure everyone thought I was on drugs!

I was excited to read this book based on the everyone's comments. However, by the end I quickly realized it lacked the takeaways one expects.
It talks in length about how to promote yourself, but it fails to drive home the distiction between those who promote gracefully and those that just brag. I was expecting to learn this difference based on the title.
It never happened. So I give it two stars based on some good content, but no more given it misses the mark.

This book reads like a really good magazine article - you get hooked on the concept, but leave wanting more. Author does a great job comparing and contrasting specific examples of how to self-promote and provides a guide to preparing your self-promotion pitch. However, it doesn't articulate a specific framework and set of skills that I can draw upon in any situation. I found it hard to identify the take-aways from chapters that were just rolling examples. Overall, helpful for the guide on preparing your pitch and examples, but fails in developing real skills.
Wanta-be entrepreneurs need to read this book, and successful entrepreneurs probably already have!

A gem of a book. We all know that bragging for bragging's sake is a no-no. Few of us like being around a braggart, and we try to avoid them most of the time. But a businessperson has to get the word out about what she sells or does for a living. Successful people don't call their pitches "bragging," but instead call it self promotion.
But what is the difference between a silly braggart and being a good self-promoter? Well, the answer can be found in the instant book. And the author has done a wonderful job of explaining the difference.
All the chapters were good, but my favorites were Chapter 4 (Techno Brag) and Chapter 8 (When You're Out on Your Own). These two chapters were the most relevant to self-employed small business owners. And they are the chapters that my clients at SCORE need to pay special attention to. 5 stars!

I bought the audio version of this book because it was under five bucks and I was trying to get my Amazon total over $25 so I'd get free shipping. I should have just paid for the shipping. Not much to add to the many negative reviews other than to say it's read poorly as well as written poorly due to Bronson's somnambulent articulation and unflattering imitations of various interviewees' voices and supposed accents. I listened all the way through, hoping for a redeeming bit of insight at the end, but no such luck. At least the audio version was abridged.

First of all, I have to declare an interest because I am actually IN this book. I was one of the original six members of the Writer's Grotto in San Francisco, before moving to New York. Po refers briefly to my making the transition from cleaning lady to journalist to jazz singer and bringing out my debut CD Listen Love. I document it in more detail in my own instructional how-to book, Anything I Can Do... You Can Do Better, along with the experiences and advice of many other artists -- including plumber-turned-novelist Mal Peet (winner of Carnegie Medal among other honors) for Tamar: A Novel of Espionage, Passion, and Betrayaland women's fiction writer Veronica Henry, who wrote Wild Oats. Po's book is an inspirational read! I highly recommend it. I'm not just saying that because I'm in it -- honest!

The few stories that are helpful are completely overshadowed by the rest of the book which really has nothing to do with his premise. The author's armchair pseudo psychological evaluation of the people he interviews completely muddles their stories. This book would be so much better if he culled more than half of them and got himself out of the way of the remainder.

I love this book. It did not "change" my life. It did afford me a lot of insight into how people actually change their lives, beyond sentiments and cliches of self help books. It reads like a novel. And it is certainly not all about white over educated or indulgent people - anyone who states this clearly has not even flipped through the chapters!
It tells stories of poor and rich, immigrants, privileged and under privileged people who all changed their lives. And most of them have moved away from self indulgent lives, towards serving what they feel is a purpose. That is why I'm so fascinated by this book.
It comes off as extremely truthful, rather than moralistic. Po does not leave out nuances and negative aspects to serve an opinion or teach a tale.
If you believe in becoming wiser by contemplating real life stories for yourself and drawing your own conclusions, this is a fascinating book.

If you are looking for answers then this is not the book to buy. Its messy and deliberately so as it reflects ordinary people questioning their lives and making choices that don't always work out. Treat it as a dialogue that provokes insight perhaps into your own situation. At least it shows you are not alone.

I've read many self-help books, but this is one that stays on my shelf. I have recommended this book to my close friends, as well. As an owner of several small businesses, I found Gail Evans thoughts to be both eye-opening and applicable in many aspects of life.
She explains the psychology of each gender in business clearly. I do not find her sterotypical, like other readers, but stating obvious truths. I wonder if the readers who did not value her opinions might be men.

Now I'm looking for my chance to sneak a read of it when she wont notice it missing from her book shelf. Trust me, if MY wife read it and liked it, it must be one damn good book. Maybe I'll buy my own copy and read it - I think I will. Second review to follow...

I read this book in 2000 when it was first published. It is a quick read, and it is entertaining. What brings the book to mind again today is that earlier this week I used one of the author's stories to illustrate a point I was making when presenting information to upper management at a chemical plant. As a licensed professional counselor and personal and professional life coach, I often bring in stories, because they are wonderful teachers. Gail Evans has some good stories, but more importantly, she comes across as definitely authentic. Therefore, when she gives a list of what MEN can do that WOMEN can't, the reader pays attention.
They can drink. We can't
They can cry. We can't.
They can have sex. We can't.
They can fidget. We can't.
They can yell. We can't.
They can have bad manners. We can't.
They can be ugly. We can't.
Now then, even though we can all argue that this is not always true, her concept is a marvelous instigator of REAL conversation about some of the different expecations we have of men versus women. I'm glad I bought this book back in 2000, and I'm glad I kept it all these years. I recommend reading it yourself to see if eight years has evidenced any change. The knowledge that men and women function differently isn't new and there are plenty of books on the topic already. Most of the books I've read on the subject do a great job of identifying our differences and how men and women communicate or socialise but aren't so good at discussing anything real about how we behave in the workplace. Play Like a Man, Win Like a Woman is all about how we work, how we are perceived and motivating factors for success.
Gail Evans is my new hero on the topic of career success for women. She writes from her own experience with real life anecdotes from other men and women in management roles. Her style is very easy to read, pleasantly candid, and often humourous which really is refreshing for this type of book. I find a lot of books on gender relations to be overly serious and a bit too textbook for my taste. Evans also counsels women to be themselves and not try to be men but to retain uniquely female qualities such as intuition and emotional intelligence, something that can be lacking from women working at executive level these days.
This book is an excellent resource for women in business at any level but particularly useful for new grads or women working in entry level roles who don't have a great deal of experience with the politics and strategy of dealing with men in management roles. This would also be an extremely valuable read for any men working in a classic male dominated heirarchic management structure with a predominantly female workforce (i.e. health, education).

In "Make Your Contacts Count," Lynne Waymon and Anne Baber have created a networking bible for today's professionals - in any profession or life stage. Reading chapter after chapter, I was able to identify both short and long term strategies to build and nurture my network. In addition, I was struck by the number of practical, simple tips which can be easily learned and practiced in all my interactions - professional and personal. The book provides current real life examples, as well as theory behind authors' recommendations. As a baby boomer with over 30 years of professional experience, networking was something for sales and marketing types. Professionals in private practice or business - lawyers, accountants, consultants - called it rainmaking. For most of us, it was something we only thought about when we were job searching. While job searching is addressed in one chapter, the book is really about how to build relationships - six stages described and how to strengthen. I'm convinced ..... networking is the essential career survival tactic and a core competency for today's leaders.

As a career counselor, I spend a lot of time and energy persuading clients to network who are not naturally good at it. Now I can make better use of my time by recommending this book. There is something for everyone's risk level. No reader can walk away unchanged after perusing this book.

This new edition of Making Your Contacts Count hits the bullseye. The authors state that networking is the essential professional competency in today's business world. Clearly, this book is the essential guide to ramping up your networking skills. Making Your Contacts Count provides substantial practical actions. For instance, strategic advice like how to plan your "agenda" for conversations is interspersed with tips like how to remember names(ex. repeat the first name and introduce that person to someone else..it works!) In our study of organizational success, Shaping Your HR Role: Succeeding in Today's Organizations we found that effective networking was a tactic often used by those who achieve results. I recommend this guide to all people who need to influence others in today's complex organizations.

If you keep showing up to business networking events and leaving empty-handed and non-connected, buy this book, read it and start implementing the many practical ways to connect with others, build lasting business and personal relationships and watch your business grow!

I very much appreciate Dave Ramsey's putting financial matters in the context of virtuous behavior. This is not just a "get out of debt" book or a "make real money" book. It is a book that reminds its readers how many of us stray from fiscal health, suckered in by the 'race to get ahead and then fall behind' values common to the vast majority of Americans - materialism, status, name brands, immediate gratification, antagonism, impermanence, gluttony, lack of responsibility, even lack of contentment. Ramsey knows all too well that when it comes to fiscal restraint and good money habits, this is not a virtuous society. He recommends solid values to counteract the mainstream of American life - patience, delayed gratification, humility, cooperation, peace, communication, contentment and, of course, paying CASH. I wholly applaud this philosophy.
But, merely as a qualifier, I do want to let the prospective reader know that Mr. Ramsey's work is not secular. Bible passages, a Christian perspective and religious messages (such as suggesting prayer and counsel with clergy) set the tone much of the way, and the book is geared (not entirely but mostly) toward traditional and fairly conventional nuclear families.
As a more daring and thorough departure from those seemingly ubiquitous American go-getter values that lure so many into dire straits (such as 'the more you buy the more you save'), I can heartily recommend the popular classic "Your Money or Your Life."

Consumer debt has long been a problem of most americans. The writer is very explicit about those things which cause us to go into consumer debt.
One of the things he addresses is greed, not having the patience to wait
for the money in our hand to purchase items. I am a baby boomer and our generation has been known to want things microwave quick. This book addresses the dangers and pitfallsof that thinking. It will set you free from stinking thinking!

I enjoyed the examples of employee reviews from the chapter "Performance Review Tales of Triumph and Terror." I also enjoyed the "Bonus Superlative Phrases" at the end of each phrase category. These are amusing phrases for the employee whose performance is fabulous.

Having recently redeveloped and launched our Performance Management Program, the title of this book really caught my interest. It has been my experience that the best designed Perforance Management Program falls short of its intended goal unless it is well communicated to the recipients. Meryl's book offers an extensive selection of phrases and terms for every level of interaction. This book is be a MUST READ for every new supervisor and an excellent CONVERSATION ENHANCER for the seasoned ones. This book could not have come at a better time. I was dreading the thought of writing my performance reviews until I read this book. It gave me insight into the importance of the process as well as some key phrases to use to make the writing of the review simple. I could not believe how smooth the review process was this year as a result. I wrote my reviews with confidence and it took me half the time it normally takes! I passed it along to my managers and colleagues I was so impressed. Great job ladies on making a potentially tired subject alive and refreshing again!

As a young professional who devoted so much time and energy to a career I thought I would love, it was disheartening to realize after 4 years and 2 companies that I hated what I was doing. I had no idea how to figure out what to do next... then I found my guide - my career coach and co-author of this book, Anthony Spadafore.
I spent the last few months working with Anthony (www.pathfinderscareerdesign.com) and became a guinea pig of sorts as he helped me navigate my way utilizing this new book. Each chapter is filled with relevant and purposeful information, as well as meaningful inquiries to help you dig deep inside and really put some thought behind what you want to do for the rest of your life! You spend so much of your life at work... too much to be miserable and hate what you do. Don't you owe it to yourself to find what truly makes you happy, what satisfies you and empowers you? I think you do and this new book will help you do that.
Unlike any other career-related program I've personally experienced or seen advertised, this book steps outside of that box and takes you down 3 separate paths that ultimately come together as one when you are ready to design your career: 1 - Natural Talents, 2 - Meaning & Subject Matter, 3 - Workplace Environment.
This book goes against everything we are taught about choosing a career. I am willing to bet that most of you heard this question asked of you many times - "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Typically, you would answer with a job title such as "doctor", "fireman", "President of the United States", etc. Whatever your little heart desired - you can be anything! Well, I don't know about you, but the thought of "anything" was a bit overwhelming. And it's awfully disappointing to start down a career path, investing time, money, and energy into something you end up hating.
I encourage you to read this book and learn how to approach it from the other side. Instead of picking the title first, try backing into it - figure out the components first, then find the title that meets your criteria. This book will help you with that - every step of the way.
My biggest revelation that came about as a result of this process was that I didn't need to stuff myself into a career "box" that didn't fit. And for the last 4 years of my life, that is exactly what I was trying to do. It's no wonder I hated my job. It didn't fit who I was or what I desired - talents, meaning, environment and all. Instead, I made the choice to design a career "box" that fits me for who I am... not the other way around.
I successfully completed Anthony's career change program using this book just a short time ago. Now, I am making choices and taking chances to pursue the new career that I designed... for me and me alone. I am a success story - a positive result of using this book.
If you are truly serious about finding a career that fits, and you are willing to put the time and energy into this process, then you are in the right place. Buy this book and start down your new path.

A fantastic book to help guide you find that perfect career. Lore doesn't waste any time in this book and gets right to it. His 25+ years of coaching experience shows when he tells you exactly what you have to do and how to use this guide to find the perfect career of your choice.
He is funny but very serious regarding why traditional methods are outdated and not suited for the 18-30 crowd.
Lore uses proven goal attaining techniques used my those of the likes of Tonny Robbins and Robert Kiyosaki of Rich Dad Poor Dad and applies them to helping you find the perfect career.
This is a book you want to read over and over and bookmark certain chapters to refer back from time to time. This book is different in that the first part is the learning part, and the second part is the doing part. If you're like me, who really only learns from actually doing, then you'll love this part.
This is a book you can pick up on your own and follow through or better yet, with a buddy and both of you set deadlines to get through each chapter and challenge each other. I could also see this being used in High School as an elective for Seniors and as a college course elective for all undergrads!

A friend recomended the Pathfinder by Nicolas Lore (same author) and I went to the bookstore to discover this newer version (for young people). Started reading it in the store and I could not put it down. First time I ever went into a bookstore and only picked up one book. This is much more than a ''career book.'' This is a lesson book in practical wisdom. If you want to create and design the best possible career (and life) for yourself, when you start to read ''Now What,'' something inside of you will say ''Yes!'' I am recommending ''Now What'' to every single person I know.

Nick Lore has written a book that takes career choice seriously while writing in a tone that is light enough to be read. He has moved so far past those ridiculously unhelpful "aptitudes and interests" tests foisted upon high school and college students that it does this book a disservice by putting it in the same category as those tests.
As an industrial-organizational psychologist, I have been impressed by the growing sophistication with which employers are trying to fit the person to the job and to the organization. A wide array of tests, screening mechanisms, and sophisticated recruitment strategies attest to the high value employers see in getting a good fit.
Yet, the other side of the coin -- the young person's act of choosing a career -- has received far less attention and care. For the most part, the process and thinking behind such a critical choice is haphazard at best.
"Now What?" doesn't sugar-coat this process. On the contrary, Mr. Lore portrays career choice as a profoundly difficult process that involves time and dedication. It is probably better to think of this book as a workbook than a mere self-help book.
Yet, for the person who takes the time -- perhaps measured in weeks or months -- to work through Mr. Lore's process, there is the distinct promise that he or she will end up in that blessed minority of people who truly love their work.
It has been years since I insisted that my 18-year-old son read a particular book. Until now. He's got his own copy now, as will his 14-year-old brother in a couple of years. I'll be helping both of them work through the steps Mr. Lore outlines "Now What?" until we're all the way through the process. I'm confident they'll see my gift of this book to them as I see Lore's gift to us: as an act of love.

The real problem with this book is that the product description failed to mention that it is a **COMPILATION** of excerpts from 2 other books:
"How to Stop Worrying and Start Living", and
"How to Win Friends and Influence People".
I already had those two books and, so, wasted my money by buying this book.

This book merely takes excerpts from Dale Carnegie's two earlier books: (1) How to stop worrying and start living and (2) How to win friends and influence people.
Rules excerpted from How to Stop Worrying and Start Living include
1. Be yourself, do not imitate others.
2. Work habits:
(a) keep your desk clean except for material related to the current problem at hand
(b) work on more important problems first
(c) when you encounter a problem, solve it right away if you have the necessary information rather than leave it lingering
(d) delegate effectively, you're still responsible for the results
3. Relax
4. Be enthusiastic
5. Count you blessings, not your troubles.
6. Remember that unjust criticism is often a disguised compliment.
7. Put in your best effort; don't let others' criticisms get to you
Rules from How to Win Friends and Influence People include
1. Don't criticize, complain
2. Give honest, sincere appreciation

5. Become genuinely interested in other people
6. Make the other person feel important and do it sincerely.
7. Show respect for the other person's opinion.
8. Begin in a friendly way.
9. Get the other person to say successive "yes", "yes" immediately.

12. Call attention to people's mistakes indirectly.
13. Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person.
14. Ask questions instead of giving direct orders.
15. Let the other man save his face.
The habits are easy to understand and eminently practical. Reading the book will help you become better at human relations.

I realize that this book is simply an abridged compilation of HOW TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE and one of Dale Carnegie's other famous books, the title of which eludes me for the moment. However, HOW TO ENJOY YOUR LIFE AND YOUR JOB is still a very important book on its own simply because it allows the reader the opportunity to learn these valuable lessons while concentrating on one central theme, not to mention a theme which is almost always on everone's mind with waking and sleeping: the workplace.
This book was easy to read and offered deep insight on how to work better and smarter. It's not a 12-step program or some kind of money-made-easy scheme. All the techniques in the book require practice, hard work, and a lot of patience. But by doing the best I can to employ these techniques in my workplace, I've become not only more proficient but also more relaxed, and more able to enjoy the job, even to the point at which it's no longer a drudge to have to go to work in the morning.
I highly recommend HOW TO ENJOY YOUR LIFE AND YOUR JOB.

"How to Enjoy Your Life and Your Job" was created by taking excerpts from "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" - both excellent books. Buy those books separately or buy "Dale Carnegies Lifetime Plan for Success : The Great Bestselling Works Complete In One Volume" (ISBN: 1578660394) which contains both complete books. This way you get Carnegie's work in its complete form. I consider Carnegie to be one of the best self-help authors of all time, and that is reflected in these writings. Carnegie's work will help you improve your attitude, relationships, choices, and the results you achieve in life if you are willing to put his advice into practice. I only gave this book 3 stars because it is just a rehash of Carnegie's other books, with material cut out.
