I've been on both sides of the job interview process: as someone doing the hiring and also as a candidate for a job. It is amazing how being on the job hunt alters your view of the interview process. Did I develop some kind of "interview fever" which made me overly nervous and forget what it was like to hire someone? Maybe. But reading Winning Job Interviews allowed me to step back and put it all back into proper perspective so I could ace the interview and get the job. How cool is that?

Must Read prior to going to any interview

Clear, direct, concise.

The first 40 pages will tell you what you really know: how you feel. And how to deal with it. With an upbeat language helps you decrease your anxiety and depression. And further, MOTIVATE you.

Then clear clues on how to behave, conduct, and win interviews.

I wish he could avoid some areas of job searching and closing to have more material on the topic.

But IT IS A MUST READ.

A "Must-Read!" for all GI's getting out of the service.

I'm getting ready to retire from a successful military career. To be honest, before reading Dr. Power's book-the thought of joining the rat-race of the whole job interview process was more formidable than facing another deployment to the desert! At 40 years old I haven't had to go on a job interview in over 20 years! This book was not only fun to read, but offered great tips, warned against common pit falls (I was sure to fall into) and helped me plan out my strategy to attain my future career. It's hard to imagine, but after reading this candid, well-written book I feel not only self-confident but actually excited about my upcoming interviews!

Money well spent !!!

This book was definitely money well spent. I have interviewed and accepted jobs previously in my career (10yrs in my profession), but have never been as prepared as I was after reading this book. I used it from the start of the job hunt process to accepting the best overall offer. Reading the book helped ease pre-interview anxiety, and also helped me prepare for interviews by providing a good idea of what to expect, how to prepare, and how to answer difficult questions, etc. The sections I found most helpful were on generating multiple offers, and negotiating after the initial offer. I used Dr Powers advice on both, and was able to generate multiple offers and negotiate significantly higher salary and vacation time. Well worth the money and I would recommend this book to anyone currently on the job hunt.

What makes YOU tick? This one is better than StrengthsFinder!

We're having a blast with this book at my work! It tells you which of the 14 personality types you are, what your strengths are based upon your type, and what you can do to overcome your weaknesses. I was surprised at how spot-on the description of my type (Motivator) was. Most of my coworkers had the same reaction.

With some of my, eh hem, tougher to understand colleagues, I now have a way to understand where they are coming from and why they do some of the bizarre things that they do. The book gives us a common language that we now use to understand and describe each other. We also took the strengthsfinder test and I didn't get the same depth of information from that test, so I don't understand the review here that says that book is better. Plus that strengthsfinder book is too short and The Personality Code provides a wealth of information. Highly recommended!

I had been thinking a lot about making a career change when I came across this book. It was really helpful to learn about my personality type and see how this connects to the tasks that I tend to be great at, versus those that drag me down. I found the book's description of me to be really accurate, as was the online test. There were a few surprises in there I wasn't aware of as well!

In the end I'm ready to make my move and this book helped a lot to build my confidence knowing I'm heading in the right direction. I'd recommend it to anyone who's going through a similar process.

I expected this book to be educational (and it was), but I was surprised by what a breezy read it turned out to be. Dr. Bradberry provides many interesting stories of how personality plays out in the real world to illustrate the concepts. These stories helped me to see the connection to people I know, as well as myself. Great book.

The Personality Code shows you how to understand yourself in ways you may have never though possible. I was surprised to learn that personality controls so much of our behavior and how we interact with people. But, more importantly, it changes less than 1% in adulthood. The stories and research in this book are really fascinating, including a study where they followed people for 60 years and saw how little the core of who they are changed in their lifespan. The IDISC personality test that comes with the book is also quite revealing. I learned a lot about myself and had family and friends take it as well to learn their personality types. Highly recommended.

I'm amazed by what The Personality Code taught me about myself. The author's style of writing is a bit of a page-turner, with great stories entertwined with factual information. I enjoyed how quickly and accurately the book was able to summarize my personality, and show me where to go (what to do and what not to do) based on my personality type.

The online test that you can only take when you buy the book is also great. I recommend The Personality Code!

so you want to go freelance... you really, REALLY want to go freelance? Tired of working for a boss? Want your own hours? Sleep late? Get this book, read it and then decide. It'll give you a well-rounded education of what they don't tell you in art school because what your professors were really interested in at that time wasn't your education, but getting a piece of co-ed you-know-what while they collected their paycheck.

A great little guide for the wanta-be entrepreneur who doesn't have a mentor to help them go from W-2 worker to self-employed!

I really liked this book a lot. It was a very good first-hand book written by a small business owner about his experiences starting, managing, and prospering as a freelance illustrator and/or graphic designer. His writing style was not exactly stellar. But it certainly was clear. The 20 chapters included in the book fell into the following 4 topics:

1. STARTING THE FIRM
>>Where Do You Start?
>>Off on the Right Foot
>>Creating a Plan for Your Business
>>Developing Your Financial Plans
>>Forms, Charts & Templates
>>Pricing Your Work and Getting Paid

2. MANAGING THE FIRM
>>Why Should You Freelance?
>>Setting Up Shop
>>Managing Your New Studio

3. RAINMAKING FOR THE FIRM
>>Bring in Clients
>>How to Get Noticed
>>What Goes in the Portfolio
>>Marketing on the Web

4. POSSIBLE MARKETS
>>The Magazine Market
>>Selling to the Newspapers
>>Working with Advertising Agencies
>>Selling to Book Publishers
>>The Greeting Card Market
>>Working with Art and Design Studios
>>Selling to Small Business

Since I am not an illustrator or a graphic designer I did not have much use for the fourth topic. But it was interesting to read about. I regularly counsel wanta-be entrepreneurs about how to start a small business; I'm a volunteer SCORE counselor. And the material covered in the first three topics above are exactly what I talk about with my SCORE clients. I highly recommend this book to anybody wanting to start their own small consulting practice. It does a wonderful job discussing the topics.

My biggest complaint with the book is the tendency of the author to recommend outsourcing so many functions: accounting, taxes, and Web site design and construction. I think these things should be fully understood by the small business owner and probably done by the owner herself. When the business grows to have a few employees, then the employees can do those tasks if the owner wants to do that.

I would have written the section on choice of business structure differently. Keep in mind that LLCs can be either single member or multi member. An LLC can elect to be taxed as a sole proprietorship (single member), a partnership (multi member), or a C Corporation. Also, a multi member LLC will have to file a partnership tax return. A good book on the subject that I recommend you read to supplement this book is Structuring Your Business (ISBN: 1593371772). I highly recommend forming an LLC and electing to have it taxed as a C Corporation. Just give yourself a bonus at year-end so the corporation retains no earnings. If your business is a corporation it is less likely to be audited by the IRS. 5 stars!

Great reference book!

Best Book On Freelancing I've Ever Read

Review Date: 2007-06-27
This is simply one of the best books for starting a freelance art career that I've ever read. This book gives you very practical information about almost every detail of freelance illustration and graphic design. You'll find information on creating business and financial plans, setting up and managing a studio, billing procedures, creating a portfolio and marketing yourself to potential clients. I find a lot of books of this nature don't talk about the raw mechanics of business so much as they offer token inspiration and motivation. If you're interested in a book that will actually give you useful information about the business side of freelancing this is the one to buy.

The only areas where it seemed to be a little on the thin side were dealing with taxes and the legal issues concerned with working for youself. Other than that it was wonderful.

this book is all about getting people to "open up" through the use of carefully designed questions. the reader will learn how to influence other people's behavior via questioning - and, importantly, listening. the author does a good job in demonstrating the value of "leading" people, through the deliberative process, to sound judgements and opinions. this book goes well beyond what the title promises. it will teach you how to control the direction of conversations with desired outcomes achieved. being a coach myself, i would have liked a few more actual examples included in the text.

This is a book I would NOT put into my personal library...I didn't learn a whole lot more about passive-aggressive behavior than I knew going into the reading. There were relatively few "examples" in this book...and for this type of book and this guy being a therapist (and congressman...he does beat us over the head with this fact throughout the book and it was more than a little annoying), I would have expected far more "stories" or case studies...and they just aren't here. This leaves the book a very dry and relatively uninteresting read, as he actually deals very little with actual passive-aggressive behavior and goes off at length on nearly ever other type of disorder that can be associated with PA behavior. I might recommend it to someone totally unfamiliar with PA-ness...but for me, this book left much to be desired. Additionally, the suggestions (beyond seek out a therapist/counselor, were excessively vague (another area where full examples to illustrate the author's point would have been extremely helpful). I rate it a C and hope that I can pull some useful additional reading from the notes.

LIFE CHANGING BOOK

This has truly changed my life. I have been mistreated by my husband's sister for 17 years, it has been a horrible experience. The little digs, rude comments, setting me up. Then playing innocent victim. (The example scenario page with man and his new fiance and his sister, could be my true life excerpt). I never understood and then I read this book. Now I get it. What makes her do what she does. It has been so very enlightening and such a relief to understand. It was never even about me. It is about her, and her low self esteem and jealousy. Although I still don't want her in my life, I no longer have such bitter feelings for her. I feel for her. It has helped me in everyday life to be more compassionate to others. The anger we see usually has nothing to do with us. This book has made me a kinder person. A MUST READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This book claims to be co-authored by congressman Tim Murphy, PhD and Loriann Hoff Oberlin, but with her openly advertised book "Writing for Quick Cash" (scroll up!) it becomes apparent that this book is an offering of her opinion while piggybacking on his reputation - all for quick cash. What this book really is: a manual for feminists on how to assign blame in order to look and feel better about themselves as women.

In the first pages ("About the Authors") she openly declares her feminist agenda by claiming her book "Surviving Separation and Divorce" was written to encourage women. Beware, male readers - sexist programming ahead. Being born with a Y chromosome was no crime I chose to commit, yet reading through the examples of loser men going to court after being irresponsible with their children did nothing to strengthen me personally or help me identify or overcome passive-aggressive behavior in myself or others.

In the book I noticed several names and explanations on passive-aggressiveness and the effects it has, but the title of the book is OVERCOMING Passive-Aggression. On page 140 she says, "When your marriage ends..." When!? Is the only solution to passive-aggressive behavior in recognizing it in others and avoiding or exploiting them? I hope not.

This book was a complete waste of my time, and I hope for the good of all that there is a book out there truly about overcoming passive-aggression that will benefit the individual who reads it and those around them.

Excellent for both anger hiders and those around them

One the best self-help books I've read. This book takes both the view of people who are passive-aggressive, referred to has hidden anger, and those around them affected by these behaviors. It has really helped me both understand how to be assertive with emotions and address hidden anger in others around me. The book's philosophy is "knowledge is power" rather than taking a prescription approach. Every reader can take this knowledge and apply it in their own lives, work setting, school and with children and other family members.

I bought this book thinking it would give me insights into one specific area, but it has informed so many different aspects of my life. There is not a lot of filler, and I found every chapter to be informative and worth reading. The title is accurately descriptive. It includes practical information that applies to all different kinds of personal and professional relationships. It was a real eye opener in terms of understanding certain behaviors and the various ways anger may manifest or be transferred. It also has great advice on how to recognize when hidden anger is being manifested and how to minimize its impact on yourself. My husband is reading it now, and said he will probably re-read it. I agree that this is that kind of book--one I will turn to again and again in the future.

Psychology, money management and an edge with a positive expectancy is all you need for trading success. The trading strategies in Dr. Carr's book give you that edge and are also easily adapted to end of day trading and longer trends. The Dr.'s passion for trading and teaching his readers to trade is obvious throughout the book. I've been trading trends for a very long time and I now have a book that I can recommend to people who want to know how to succeed using this method.

In Response to Dr. Elder

Review Date: 2008-06-05
I am honored that Dr. Elder would take the time to respond to my recently published book, "Trend Trading for a Living". For the record, the title was chosen by the publisher for reasons not disclosed to me (my own title suggestion was rejected). With all due respect to one whose work I respect a great deal, I'd like to correct his primary assertion: my book has a lot to do with his, for it was his classic text, "Trading for a Living", that got me started on the road toward building techical trading systems.

As I state in my acknowledgements, "...I am indebted to Alexander Elder, master teacher and market psychologist. Dr. Elder first revealed to me the elegance and logic of technical analysis as applied to price charts. Many of the of the key concepts embedded in the systems explained in this text come from his seminal work...now considered a classic in trading literature" (p. xv). Later in the book, in the introductory chapter, I devote two paragraphs to explaining what I learned from reading Elder's work (p. 17). The principle of "divergence", so central to several of my systems, I learned from him.

Of course, our books differ markedly. I offer 10 complete trading systems (5 long, 5 short) whereas his book offers 3 systems (triple screen, parabolic, channel). Elder is primarily a futures trader, and his examples are from futures markets, whereas I am exclusively a stock trader. One-fifth of my book is devoted to trend trading stock options but his only mentions options (on futures contracts) in passing. And Elder's book offers a catalog (very helpful) of over 20 technical indicators and sentiment readings while I've tried to simplify things by discussing only those indicators I've found to be most reliable for trend trading (trendlines, RSI, MACD, OBV, CCI, Stochastics, Moving Averages, and candlesticks).

Regardless, I hope that Dr. Elder would read my book and learn there just how much his work has meant to me. I owe him a great deal of thanks and hope to meet him one day soon to express that.

Ask yourself, how many times can you say the same thing, give it a new title, and market it well? Sure, there are always a few new spins about a subject that have never been presented in exactly the same way before. But, the concept has been shared so many times, by so many authors for well over a century, that you should ask yorself, "what is it going to take to get the message and implement it"? Nothing new here in my opinion. Is it valuable? Sure for someone just taking their first step in the direction of conscious living! Save you money and save a few trees, the Planet could use yor help.

I'm usually not into books on the Law of Attraction. I found "The Secret" kind of hokey, and the metaphysical explanation of how it worked, I think took away from the basic message of the film.

However, I found Robert Anthony's explanation of the LOA very practical. He does veer into metaphysical-sounding language at times, but Beyond Positive Thinking is by far the best description of the whole "like attracts like" principle that I've heard. In the book, he also covers:

*The "glitch" that keeps most people from attracting success into their lives, and even causes them to sabotage themselves, and what you can do to fix the glitch in yourself.

*How to identify and clear out negative beliefs about money and financial success.

*How to set "goal intentions", as well as affirmations and visualizations to move you in the direction of the things you want in life.

It's a short read, but Dr. Anthony manages to cover a LOT of stuff in here. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who's read or listened to other self-improvement programs, but finds themselves still struggling to change their circumstances. But, like anything else, you'll only see results with this one *if you use it*!

Mt. Everest of self-help books

This book has an interesting history. In 1973 it was created as a series of audio cassettes; in 1988 turned into a book and in 2004 rewritten with the original title restored, a good title. (Anthony's publishers have foisted a couple of dumb titles on his books.) In my view this book is golden, the Mt. Everest of self-help books. Don't be fooled by its briefness because Anthony makes every sentence count and there is more than 30 years of experience behind it, which gives it clarity. True, some people have sniffed out the spirituality grounding this book and reacted like Dracula to the cross. The fundamentalists also, the "if Adam and Eve were not real people then the whole Bible is a lie" type of thinkers, won't like it. But that's their loss. The spirituality gives the book depth, power and roots which all the "no sweat, get rich quick" books lack. There is just one problem. Most people will read this book and go on to the next self-help, success book. But those who read it again and again and diligently, patiently, put its teaching into practice may find a miracle in their life. (I regret that Anthony keeps such a low profile and his life very private, since you always want to know an author you admire. Still, its the message that counts, not the credentials. Those who want to see where the ideas in this book came from can go to Anthony's "Ultimate Secrets of Total Self-Confidence," a hype title but a good book.

I read this book years ago, applied it's techniques, and my life changed forever. I tripled my income, bought my first home, easily got into the best physical shape of my life, and have been applying the techniques and lessons in here ever since.

Since that time, I've re-read the book over and over during the years. The truth in here is timeless and powerful. Forget all the other books out there, I'm telling you, this is the real deal.

If you only read one book this year or next year, read this one. Dr. Anthony - Thank You!

This is probably one of the best organized and satright forward aviation books I've come across. VEry well thought and the way the information is laid out makes it much easier to understand since it's progressive following a logical order of ideas, revisiting concepts from some questions to others that relate in order for the reader to fully apply all the knowledge in understanding more complex concepts

OK for tech exams - but there are some errors in it

Good book I bought to catch up on some of the questions you always get, when you have oral exams, and want to explain something difficult in a simple way - this book does the trick.
But, lookout for the errors - not all of the information is totally correct - when you simplify things, often the knowledge gets so compressed, that errors are bound to occur.

All pilots must have such a book like this one. Although it's main purpose is to help in Job's interviews it's also a very good tool to review many topics we don't use to view since our private and comercial pilot's classes. I just would like to see more illustrations and it needs a few corrections too.

Interviewing is one of the most stressful things a person can do. I have been out of the workforce for 3 years. My children are grown and I decided to go back into the field of Administrative Secretary or Executive Assistant. Something I have always enjoyed and never got bored. Just being off the market for only 3 years, there were so many things that had changed about interviewing and I was extremely nervous about this. Of course all this information was coming from my family and friends. I know they all meant well, but I needed an expert. While searching on Amazon, I came across the book by Tony Beshara, "Acing the Interview." After reading this book, I have never felt the confidence in myself that I feel right now about going on a professional interview. I didn't even feel this relaxed 10 years ago. Tony Beshara's book is absolutely easy reading, down to earth and straight to the core of what you need to know about interviewing. I would recommend this book to anyone that is struggling with the thought of going on an interview, whether you have been out of work awhile or just ready for a change.

Sincerely,

Judy Turner

What a great guide to taking control of the interview in a positive way - when and how to.

How to pick up on key phrases indicating where you stand in the process and how to move yourself from candidate to employee without offending or coming across too aggressive.

Excellent book on when and how to be assertive in a hiring situation where most feel like a helpless victum or rag doll without any control of the process.

More importantly - exactly what to say to get the interviewer on your side and a call to action on your behalf.

WHAT AN EASY BOOK TO READ!
Great writing.

The title Acing the Interview doesn't really describe the breadth of knowledge Tony Beshara communicates in his latest book. If one does not venture to the Table of Contents, the book's cover tagline stating its inclusion of "450 Sample Questions" sounds very much like a dozen other self-help books for job seekers. But make no mistake, Tony is not pandering to the insecurities of those suffering from interview phobia with a warmed over collection of typical interview questions. As in his first book, "The Job Search Solution," Tony wants you to look inside yourself, and to question the common precepts about the job search process. Tony's "questions" include those you ask yourself and those you ask the employer, in addition to the questions asked of you in the interview.

Tony leverages his experience from interviewing more than 24,000 candidates in a 30-year career to make you understand that `acing the interview' is more about the research, planning, and practice you execute before the interview than it is about regurgitating rote answers in the interview.

Acing the Interview is a very strong sophomore performance from the acknowledged King of Recruiters. Those who viewed any of Tony's appearances on the Dr. Phil Show will recognize his conversational tone and sincere passionate concern for matching employers to employees. Not many recruiters can claim more than 6,700 placements in their career. Unlike most authors in this genre, who have very little, if any, real world experience in getting a job - Tony has done it, and is still doing it, every day.

Excellent advice!!

Interesting book. I jumped on the first job offer after college but was burnt out in less than a year. I like reading and was strolling through Barnes & Nobles when I came across a number of books on how to get a job. I started thinking about changing jobs and ended up going on a few interviews. It was very frustrating. One part of me wanted to just quit and stay at that same lousy job but the rest of me knew I was too young to give up.

Then I saw Dr. Beshara on the Dr. Phil show. Something in his energy and sincerity made me know that what he was saying was true. If he could get that loser Dr. Phil threw at him a job, he could get me one. I bought the Job Search Solution and couldn't put it down.

Have you ever seen those TV shows that reveal how magic tricks are performed? That's what this book is like. There's no rabbit in the hat, the lady really isn't floating in mid air, employers hide behind a bunch of smoke and mirrors. Yet if you look closely, like Tony teaches you, it all makes sense.

It's crazy, but there really is a method to the madness - just as Tony tells you. The key is working your plan and staying motivated.

WARNING: don't skip past his chapters on personal motivation. You may think you're pumped up at first, but finding a good job takes time and you have to stay pumped.

I got a good job. I did interview for a couple of others that seemed even better, but they couldn't get their act together so I think they probably weren't really that good. After reading Dr. Beshara's book it all made sense. Buy this book - it'll be the best career choice you ever made.
