The Truth About you is a book, well a workbook, aimed at people earlier in their career who are looking to learn their strengths to tailor their career path. It's packed full with tools to help you take control of your career and your performance, and I can see how these would be helpful for someone later in his/her career that's looking for more self discovery.

It will help you answer questions like this one: What are supposed to do with your life? The workbook includes a DVD and some other tools that are helpful for when you engage in the process.

I also recommend The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book if your into self discovery. A friend gave it to me this week and I finished it in two days.

The other reviewers have pretty much covered the content of this book. Admittedly I haven't used all of the ideas, however now I have become very aware of how I spend my money and how many hours I have to work to purchase the ever evasive 'thing I must have or die'. Totally amazing! I now realize how much stuff I really have that I really do not need. Keeping these things actually cost you more by using up your time and energy to maintain 'your stuff'
Once you can get this change in your thinking, it's amazing how much more money you really have.

Before I purchased this book, I found it referenced and recommended all over the place. That must mean something.

If you're still not sure about it, get it from the library. (Yet another of their money saving ideas.)

Ok book on retirement planning. But, like all such books, it pays to be rich before you retire. Nothing of use for us "poor" souls.

Review Date: 2008-07-20

Out of all the financial books I've read so far, I believe this one is the one that speaks most to my values and beliefs about finances. Instead of preaching about how you can have it all, the authors discuss the value of frugality and recognizing when a person has enough. The authors have nine steps in their program and each step is designed to help you make your way to financial independence and intelligence by asking yourself what your really getting out of your spending habits, and also the way you live your life. The authors posit that it is entirely possible to retire earlier in your life provided you know how to live frugally, and I believe this is entirely the case. I've already been modifying how I spend money, thinking carefully about what the benefit is of buying a particular item, as well as what my overall goals are. I'm already noticing some effects and I'm willing to continue committing to a program that ultimately could lead to satisfaction in terms of having enough time to really do everything that I want to do.

How to be financially independant

I have read over 50 books by all the most popular financial authors today, and I believe this classic from the early 90's is by far the best if your goal is to be financially independent from your job once and for all. The author himself actually became independent in his early thirties and remained so for over 20 years until his untimely death due to a critical illness. So this book is not about theories it is showing how some one achieved financial independence in real life.
The philosophy of this book is that you earn money through sacrificing your precious life energy through work. It talks about how the majority of people have destroyed their quality of life in pursuit of a high standard of living. The end result being they lose their identity in the position they hold and no longer live, they just work on a treadmill of endless earning and spending with little enjoyment.
The author proposed a nine step plan that will cause you to be mindful with your money. Track your spending, are you really getting the value out of what you have bought for the effort you gave to earn the money? He proposes a chart graph to track your monthly spending against your monthly income, with a third line of savings. When the interest on your savings surpasses your expenses you are completely financially free for the rest of your life. You have the rest of your life to enjoy and do what ever you please. Volunteer, work part time at something you truly love, of just sleep until noon until you are bored. The key to this program is:being frugal, aggressively eliminating all debt and cutting expenses in every way possible and saving diligently. I admit that this program is a little extreme for most people, but I am willing to follow it for the ultimate pay off, financial freedom to do as I please for the rest of my life. The new American dream.

I would highly recommend also reading Dave Ramsey's :"Total Money Makeover" if you find this book to Spartan for your personal tastes. Dave has lead me to being debt free with a large net worth over the past 15 years, and I started with nothing.

Worth reading if you're in need of some motivation from the perspective of the world of business. The book preaches the value of social networking and great ways to get started doing it. Like they say, 'it's not what you know, it's who you know,' and that seems to be the main theme behind Never Eat Alone.

Largely autobiographical in nature, Keith Ferrazzi explains how business networking made him the success he is today.

Ferrazzi has built his career on the successful management of his Rolodex, and presents a "warts and all" picture of his techniques. Especially helpful are the anecdotes showing how certain networking techniques he experimented with were dismal failures, and how he learned and adjusted.

The standard business networking tips found in many business self-help books are explained in the first third of the book, what I particularly enjoyed were some of the more intermediate tips in the latter half of the book. For instance, what to do with your list of contacts and how to successfully manange it once you have accumulated a wealth of business relations and are well on your way up the career ladder.

This book won't appeal to everyone, it tries to do too many things. Taken with a grain of a salt, it is nonetheless an enjoyable and easy business read.

A very entertaining book, a really enjoyable read, and a good idea book about networking.
Not all of us have a job the type Keith Ferrazzi does, but we can all shape our job a little more to enjoy it and make progress on it.
Thats way this book is also very useful -i would say - for everyone.
The only reason i rated this book 4-star and not 5-star is because a) i seldom rate a book 5-star, unless it has an all-time classic quality and b) this does not cover all the aspects of networking (which does not claim to do anyway).
Good job Keith.
For all readers interested in the topic - this book is well worth your money.

This is an amazing book that has done many things for me with the two most important: given me lots of ideas about marketing my business and validating personal ideas and business practices that I had.

I also very much enjoyed reading this book: it's full of examples of people that I have hear of and can identify with, it's well written with few "repeats" and best of all, it almost reads like a novel: you want to keep on reading!

I originally got this book from the library: I am buying it for my own collection as I'll want to refer to it over and over again.

I heard this guy at a conference, and of course our conference hosts presented us with the book as a gift in our rooms the night before. I walked out on the "speech," and thought maybe the book would be better. Alas, it wasn't. This is the most self-aggrandizing book of this genre I have ever read. One wonders how many times that "I" appears in the book. "I did this, I did that, I'm great...." You name it. His methods smack of insincerity and merely using people for his own advantage. It disgusts me. Much better material out there; don't waste your money on this one. Unless you like to use people.

I bought this for my 4 year old and she absolutely loves it! It is really great for kids who have a million questions about how things work and it does a phenomenal job of explaining a typical process (e.g., building a house) from end to end (including laying sewage and water pipes underneath the ground). It gives the details that curious kids really want to know in a fun, darling way.

This delightful book for children which is enjoyable for parents to read as well wonderfully teaches us that we are all part of a family here to help each other with the gifts we have been given. For those with Faith, it is a happy way to show that we need each other, and to be grateful for each person, and appreciate what they do to make the world a better place; that each person is, as Pope Benedict said, "loved, willed and necessary."!

I got this one as a child, back in the sixties. My copy is in Dutch and although a little weathered it's not falling apart yet.
The copy I'm reviewing here is a reprint that misses several spreads, but sad though it may be, if you don't know about it you won't miss it.
Richard Scarry shows different "people" (animals in clothes), all kinds of professions, how they interact and how one depends on the other. And in doing so he introduces a child to society where we all depend on one another.
More than anything else he was responsible that I grew up to be free minded and open spirited person. Whatever a human being does for a living, if he/she does it with love he will make your day.
A policeman, a baker, a newspaper man, a writer, photographer or singer, the postman, the bus driver. We all depend on one another. And as long as we try our best to understand that and accept and respect our fellow citizens we will be on the right path.
His drawings are world famous. They're sweet and funny without being too simplistic. No matter what family, the rabbits, the mice or the pigs, even the worm, they're all lovely characters with different personalities.
It has always been my first choice as a gift for kids.

The book was not really what I expected. I read it but it was not all about working from home and some of the sites she recommends cost money to sign up for although she states in the book you should never have to pay a fee. It was okay but I would have rather checked it out from a library or borrowed rather then waste my hard earned money on it. Most of the sites she gave I am already aware of.

Power vs. Force is a book like none other. It truly lays the ground for further spiritual work/evolution by allowing one to see all aspects of the human experience and how, in its innocence, it 'just is' and people simply are who they are. From there, compassion and forgiveness is even more of a possibility as one sees that everyone (including one's self) are simply operating with our only available tools based on our awareness. This understanding allows for the inspiration to truly see that people cannot help being what they are. This books lays this foundation and, for me, has made it much more difficult to come to hard and fast judgments about others or if I do, it at least allows for a quicker recovery from it. But the beauty of this is, that as the work (that of Dr. Hawkins') continues and one begins to maneuver through the teachings that at some point it becomes abundantly clear what the Buddha meant when he said ... "Holding onto anger is like grasping onto a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else. You are the one who gets burned." So in forgiving, we are released from the negativities we are holding onto and, in turn, benefit from releasing the burden. Hearing that may sound simple, yet truly hearing why people are the way they are (Levels of consciousness) really provides, at least it did for me, at least a moment to stop and ponder before reacting or coming to quick judgments. This book changed my life and I would recommend it to anyone who was the slightest bit dissatisfied with their angers, resentments and judgmentalisms and simply, perhaps, dissatisfied with just the way their lives are currently going. We are here to grow and be our best. Dr. Hawkins provides the tools to so and in doing so, we seem to be surrendering a very basic set of animal behaviors and trading them in for something better, something higher, something that is in alignment with spiritual principles that have been taught for thousands of years. And it seems to simply take a mere willingness to first admit that we could use improvement and then to surrender to a higher authority (God, Divinity, Almighty, etc) in stead of allowing our minds to be that authority. With God, all things are possible. That is not just a sentence, that is a very powerful reality. May we all fulfill Divine potential!

A treasure of wise observations about the human condition, development of higher awareness, and the evolution of consciousness

David Hawkins had a spiritual opening in childhood and pursued further spiritual development throughout his life. He shares in this book ways in which we can understand levels of spiritual development; muscle testing methods for assessing degrees of development of people, books, events, etc.; group validation of these assessments; and the value of the presence of the therapist as an instrument for promoting healing.

Hawkins points out that logical, left-brain approaches to understanding the world are self-limiting. "... the logical arrangement of data serves mainly to enhance a pattern-recognition system that then becomes `truth.' But nothing is ever `true,' except under certain circumstances, and then only from a particular viewpoint, characteristically unstated." (p. 28)

Hawkins strongly advocates for using intuitive assessments for measuring the value of various truths, stating that everyone can use intuition with accuracy and reliability. He reports that he has found these assessments to be entirely consistent across a broad spectrum of questions tested and through assessments of multiple individuals and groups of individuals. Where discrepancies were found, he claims that they were invariably resolved through removal of various blocks, reversals, or limiting beliefs that caused distortions in intuitive perceptions. While this claim is supported by what appears to be impressive, statistically significant research (p. 120), he provided no references where any studies were published. This leaves his research open to questions of procedural validity, at the least.

Using this system, he finds levels of spiritual development along a spectrum that includes Shame, Guilt, Apathy, Grief, Fear, Desire, Anger, Pride, Courage, Neutrality, Willingness, Acceptance, Reason, Love, Joy, Peace and Enlightenment. Through kinesiology, he reports consistent identification of numerical values for each level, ranging from 20 for Shame to 700-1000 for Enlightenment. The scale is logarithmic, so each increment is by a factor of ten times the previous, lower numerical level. Thus, a few enlightened beings can counterbalance and raise the collective levels of human development because their contributions are enormously greater than those of individuals at lower levels.

The average person will advance only 5 points along this scale in a lifetime. Through inner work of psychotherapeutic and spiritual growth, we can progress more rapidly from one level to the next.

He finds that the entire cosmos is imbued with Spiritual inspiration and energy.

Man thinks he lives by virtue of the forces he can control, but in fact, he's goverendd by power from unrevealed sources, power over which he has no control. Because power is effortless, it goes unseen and unsuspected. Force is experienced through the senses; power can be recognized only through inner awareness. Man is immobilized in his present condition by his alignment with enormously powerful attractor energy patterns, which he himself unconsciously sets in motion. Moment by moment, he is suspended in this state of evolution, restrained by the energies of force, impelled by the energies of power." (p. 37-38)

Force is the use by individuals or groups of physical or psychological means of coercion to achieve their ends at the expense of others. Power is the manifestation of Spirit in the world through the presence of people at higher levels of development. "Whereas power always results in a win-win situation; force produces win-lose situation..." (p. 167) The levels of Courage (200 on his scale) and above are positive; below that, negative in their spiritual effects in the world.

I fully agree with Hawkins' observations that

It's as though every individual is exploring life with a compass that has a unique setting. (p. 113)

Concordance emerges from the organizing patterns hidden behind apparent chaos; thus, the evolution of mankind progresses despite the apparently aberrant signals of individuals at any given moment. Chaos is only a limited perception. Everything is a part of a large whole; everyone is involved in the evolution of the all-inclusive attractor field of consciousness itself. It's the evolution, innate to the overall field of consciousness, which guarantees the salvation of mankind, and with it, all of life. The nobility of man is in his constant struggle with his own unasked-for existence in a world that is a house of mirrors - his sole support, and his faith in the process of life itself. (p. 113-114)

This book is a treasure of wise observations about the human condition, development of higher awareness, and the evolution of consciousness.

I feel that a caution must be sounded, however, regarding Hawkins' overconfident statements about the certainty of his intuitive assessments and those of others he has tested. My own experience is that intuition is correct some of the time but not all of the time. The degree to which it is reliable appears related to the levels of development of the individuals making the intuitive assessments.

There are also questions raised by several specific statements in the book. I find a glaring discrepancy between Hawkins' assessment of Walmart as a business that cares for its employees and those of most of the reports from Walmart employees - finding that Walmart is a crass exploiter of manufacturers and staff, and primarily dedicated to earning profits, regardless of the human costs. Hawkins also contradicts himself, stating on the one hand that no "...reliable result [can] be obtained from inquiry into the future; only statements regarding existent conditions or events will produce consistent answers." (p. 61) Yet he makes diverse recommendations later in the book for using intuition to predict successes in business and other endeavors, suggesting that one can rely on these predictions.

I used the previous edition of the book in 2006 (green cover) and it helped me get into a top 5 business school. In fact I got into both the top 5 schools that I had applied to.

My advice to applicants is to pay special attention to essays and recommendation letters. If the writers are too busy, write one up for them (call it a template) and let them edit it. That way you can get them to say what you want them to say more or less.

Spend a LOT of time on the essays, they can make or break you more than the GMAT. Read them over and over again, read them aloud, have someone read them to you and have them reviewed by someone who got into the school you want to get into. The sample essays in the book were great to know what kind of information the admissions committee would look for. I took as much as 30 days of every day work to get my essays in the form that I was happy with.

Montauk's book guides you through this process and that was the only book I used.

This book is the bible for getting into the top MBA schools. I am currently in the process of applying to some of the top schools and have talked to a lot of current and recent grads, all of whom swear by this book. It walks you through all the steps required and the right way to approach the situation. I had my first round interview last week and knowing how the different schools differ in their approach helped tremendously.

STILL TBD on if I'm successful in my bid for the top schools but so far, I feel I'm getting all the right insider tips from this book.

Once again, Amazon was able to recommend a book that my son loved. I used to say that I had a son that didn't enjoy reading, but I feel like I can't say that anymore. He loved this story and kept reading parts out loud to the rest of the family. We all ended up reading and enjoying it. The main character is very easy to relate to and the author did an amazing job getting the reader to understand the character's problems and emotions. This book is a must read for all kids!!

The narrator inherits an old lawn mower and starts a lawn mowing business. Before he knows it, he's got more business than he can handle and a hippie stockbroker making investments for him. Each chapter title has something to do with an economic principle and we are taken along on the ride as the young narrator learns more than he ever wanted to learn about capitalism.

Very quick read. Cute.

I was excited to order this book for my 12 year-old son as I attempt to encourage his entrepreneurial skills. I was hopeful that the book would be engaging and educational (In the back of my mind I had "The Goal" -- a novel used by many business schools to teach business concepts). This book started out strong and did introduce a few concepts in a pretty clear manner. However, I felt the ending was lacking. The conclusion was completely unrealistic and, if one of the goals of the book was to teach, the ending may have cost credibility throughout as it really missed the mark. I do give the book credit for being engaging. It is an easy read. However, the book sparked no conversation from my son--I didn't see him running out to start a business. The motivation that I had hoped for didn't come. Buy it for entertainment, not for motivation or education.

Good ideas, badly written

I got this book because the story sounded really interesting, and it is. It's really poorly written though, which was disappointing. It could have been much better

Cool!

the end is the best part!!!!!!! 2nd best book I've ever read.#1 is dairy of a whimpy kid series. This book looks boring to us kids if you just read the name of the chapters, but read them and they are funny. The chapters look like the teach you and make you learn but they really have nothing to do with the names. They do really astonishing things with the money he earns. IN OTHER WORDS, READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

READ THIS REVEIW TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RATE IT GOOD TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This book is a wonderful collection of social tips. I would recommend it to everyone who seeks greater insight regarding interactions. This book or a similar book should be on everyone's shelf.

How to talk to anyone is written in a straight forward way, giving you tips on how to carry good conversations. It highlights things that, when you think about it, is very very true, especially when you think of people you DONT like speaking with, but dont really see why not.

nice short chapters that lets you pick up a few things every time you pick up the book.

For those of you who are looking to improve the quality of your communication and relationships this is one of the books for you. However I'd recommend starting with How To Win Friends and Influence People by: Dale Carnegie. As Lowndes states in the intro of her book, her book isn't a replacement to Carnegie's classic but essentially an expansion. Carnegie goes into the concepts behind Lowndes techniques while Lowndes' book goes into the nitty-gritty specifics of how to accomplish it. Long story short, Carnegie for principles, Lowndes for tools.
