The Sacred in a Post-Modern Context

Having read much traditional spiritual literature over a long period of time, I would most definitely place this book in the category of sacred literature. It is penetrating, profound, and completely authentic. The author has done a marvellous service to those on the path who truly want to be free and evolve.

Fascinating read, but falls short on some serious ethical issues

This is a very personal and fascinating story, worth reading if only for the author's own journey to enlightenment that includes his falling out with his previous guru, a man by the name of Peter Stewart, who was himself a disciple of "Rudi" / Swami Rudrananda. In addition the first two chapters present a very clear and compelling summary of Cohen's ideas, and what makes them so exciting and applicable to the condition of the vast majority of Western spiritual seekers - a condition that Ken Wilber refers to as "terminal narcissism".

The reason I can only give the book four stars is that the author does not adequately address some of the serious ethical and personality issues surrounding Cohen's leadership (although he mentions it in an Appendix - sorry Michael, my error - this is an updated review). There are two full-length books about this (see Luna Tarlo "Mother of God" and Andre Van der Brack "Enlightenment Blues") and hundreds of posts by Cohen's ex-students (see "What Enlightenment" blog and the Wikipedia article on Cohen). The allegations range from abuse of power to downright cruelty and extortion of money - not to mention some anger management issues that seem unbefitting to an individual who professes to be a permanently enlightened master. Without going into the details, one would think that any serious student of Cohen's would be concerned about this, and failure to say anything at all represents to some extent a failure of the kind of integrity that is so much a part of the teaching. Since Cohen himself appears to be unable to acknowledge or confront these issues in a credible fashion, the burden of responsibility for doing this falls on his students, and particularly his active and committed ones. I can understand the difficulties of doing this, however, it needs to be done. If the Evolutionary Enlightenment movement is indeed to progress and to start another "revolution" (a word used frequently in books by or about Cohen), these concerns will have to be adressed.

I've read many books about the spiritual journey. Most are always very engaging and very interesting but few are page turners. In this book Michael takes you through his own experience and responses to Andrew Cohen's teachings on Evolutionary Enlightenment during a 10 day intensive. As you read the book you are not only interested and engaged in what Michael's experience and responses are going to be but you are also interested and engaged in where Andrew is going to go next in the teachings. As Michael moves back and forth between direct quotes of Andrew's teachings and his response to them the reader wants to know more about both. This is a true page turner! Reading Andrew's teachings moved the seeker in me to want to read more. Reading Michael's responses and experiences made me understand how very impersonal all our responses are. As he bared his interior I found it to be not so different from mine. Not only a wonderful book but also an enlightening experience!

I was pleasantly surprised by my the read of Michael's book. It could be that my expectations were low, or I believed to have enough familiarity with the teachings. Nevertheless, the juxtaposition of Michael's struggles and epiphanies during this retreat to Andrew Cohen's challenging yet profound teachings adds much to the reader's experience. First of all, Michael is a regular guy who appears affable and accessible, despite his highly perceptive disposition. He struggles with the same existential issues we all deal with from time to time, and chooses to open himself up throughout the book as he comes face to face with himself in relation to the evolutionary process. Although I have had some exposure to evolutionary enlightenment teachings on the periphery (full disclosure: I do know several students in the community, read the magazine, and have attended one weekend retreat myself), I never got as deeply into them until I read this book. And they are not for everyone (but if you're reading this, then they may be for you). Andrew is not about making you feel good about yourself; instead he makes you come face to face with your higher purpose in a very rational manner. With this, you're forced to deal with your own postmodern narcissism ("It's all about me and what I want when I want it") and cynicism ("I don't believe in anything bigger than myself"), and come to terms with a commitment and responsibility we all need to tend with. And although there are many committed and responsible citizens in this world, it begs the question as to what extent are we committed and responsible? Does it just go as far as our family? Or our country, or our planet? Or are we ready to take on the highest possible vantage point that there is and play a role in its evolution?! Again, this is not for everyone and it's bigger than most of us probably realize. Andrew's teachings are drunk on idealism, which is not where most of us reside day to day. But with a world run amok in materialism, and with so many people lost or numbed by it, should we not consider something that can help get us out of this mess and also speaks to the postmodern western mind? If this book doesn't make you at least consider these items, then you really didn't engage with it. Through Michael's well written prose placed appropriately between Andrew's dialogues, you find that the teachings are more enriching and alive. It is through him that you can consider these concepts by stepping in his shoes, and facing your own humanity within the biggest context that there is.

As a book this is poetry and a page turner, but it is also a compass for daily life. For any seeker of deep spiritual inquiry this is a must read for it's penetrating meaning and transmission of experience. Amazingly this book offers a glimpse into one's own soul and the true nature of who we all are at our core. The honesty and clarity penetrated my own misconceptions and stirred my deepest longing for higher meaning and purposefullness. This book is the start to filling as the author calls it the 'hole in our soul'.

I've read several books on the FBI Special Agent career path, and this book is the most informative overall collection of data available. This is the only book I've read that details the specifics of an agent's career path and what to expect during various levels of an agent's career. It also provides excellent preparation for the two Phases of the agent application process, and I highly recommend this book to any person who is about to embark on the lengthy Special Agent application process.

Pithy and informative

This was the best FBI book I've been able to get my hands on. In the book you will learn about all phases of the application process in detail. Also, you will learn which applicants are the most competitive and why. Pay grades and benefits are included and fully explained. There is also a nice section on the six month training period that takes place at Quantico, Virginia for those who are selected to join the FBI's ranks. The author describes what an average day might be like for a special agent.

The reason I did not rate this book as 5 stars is because the author really did not describe the different divisions and responsibilities of each task force within the FBI (at least not with much detail). For example, he barely mentions any SWAT components and does not mention the Hostage Rescue Team at all. It would have been nice for there to have been more information about what each individual unit does and how they go about getting it done. However, I would still strongly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn the basics about the FBI. They are covered very adequately in this book.

In Corporate Confidential, Cynthia Shapiro teaches us how to survive the dehumanizing privations of employment in what perhaps has become one of the most pathological institutions in human history--the American Corporation. While Miss Shapiro's revelations and prescriptions may be advantageous in helping individuals climb the corporate ladder, many are antithetical to psychological well-being. Hardly a pragmatic long-term strategy. It's ironic that the cover of this book dons faceless images of corporate employees as this is probably how many corporations see their workforce.

A Must for Business Psychology!

Many employees don't understand the parameters they work in or the long-term consequences they could face once they irritate those who are in-charge, even when they are right. And, why should they when there are courses that teach the expectations of performance and its consequences?

Confusing many employees and resulting in further workplace conflicts are administrator work speeches that focus on "the best workers," promises of workplace betterment, and recitals of the written policies that clearly conflict with many standard operating procedures. Oftentimes, those very policies are practiced arbitrarily by those administrators, and at the consequence of the "best" employees.

With 17-years in law enforcement and approximately four years working in Internal Affairs, my eyes have certainly been opened as to how the world of human resources works and how important internal relationships are if you wish to keep your job, and better yet, promote.

This book is a must-read for those in law enforcement who hope to survive those internal issues, as well as any employee hoping to establish a long-term career and positive reputation. It is a fantastic book for association and union representatives to read, and one that could compliment any business course. And, mentoring others with it could only make the workplace a better place to work -- especially for those whose parents who didn't tell them (maybe their parents made those very mistakes themselves and never learned to do better.).

There is a fine-lined difference between what is said and what is done. Anyone who wishes to keep their job, avoid initiating complaints and lawsuits, and wants to know what the unwritten rules of business are may find it here, and should be able to strategize their moves across their vocational landscape with success.

Thank you, Cynthia Shapiro, for being so candid and for this excellent book!

Good Advice even for Non-manager Types

Review Date: 2008-06-08
I got this book because a coworker recommended it. I think the book does an excellent job of stating and explaining the obvious - which is what any good self help book should do. It's a quick read, well organized, and it has bullet points for easy reference! While the book is mainly targeting manager types, there is plenty of advice for non-manager types. If anything the book offers a perspective on what it's like to be a lead or a manager, so as an individual contributor one can sufficiently please their gatekeeper ;)

Things I found particularly valuable was the emphasis that it's not about your skills, it's about how you play the game - and this isn't represented in a negative light. The author doesn't state opinions - just facts. I've always been frustrated in my career because I'm 3x as smart as the average person, yet I have to work 3x as hard! Shapiro clearly outlines behaviors we may engage in that can harm our ability to progress in our jobs. I realized from her examples that my blunt nature is likely mis-perceived as negativity, so I've started developing better ways of communicating on various work issues that are less "threatening". This has resulted in an almost instantaneous change, both in improved attitudes of my coworkers, and I get less resistance from higher ups when implementing improvements.

The aspect of this book that is especially beneficial is how Shapiro emphasizes that mistakes are rarely final - you can usually redeem yourself. She even gives advice on how to explain the change to your boss and coworkers. While the book is a harsh dose of corporate reality (although not quite as *shocking* as the review might suggest), it doesn't leave you feeling stuck. The advice in this book ultimately enables you to take control of your professional reputation in a corporate setting such that the powers that be can truly focus on and reward you for your talents and what you contribute.

I am only about two years into corporate america, so this book was an amazing eye opener for me and a GREAT career booster. For anyone who is close to retirement or older, this book will probably provide great details, but they will be too late for you. This book is RIGHT ON target when it comes to the way corporate america really thinks and how you need to carry yourself if you want to advance in speed you think you should. I have read a ton of books on this subject and this by far is the best! I gave it to a co-worker who is in an executive position at my company, which is a fortune top 100 company, and she said she read the whole thing in ONE night because she was so surprised on how on target it was!

I can appreciate the work Mr. Machowicz has done in abstracting his experience and knowledge into something that can be used by anyone to accomplish their goals. His basis of thought comes from one of the most universally understood concepts in society, that of war and in general, conflict and politics. It's no mistake that Sun Tzu is a primary reference in this book, as war has often been the primary analogy for any conflict resolution.

However, despite the labeling of his precepts being very much adapted from his military background, the theory is sound and unencumbered by unrelated anecdotes or detours into tangential subject matter. "Figure out what you want, plan an attack, execute your plan... and here's how".
It doesn't have to be any more complicated than that, and why should it be? The simpler it is, the easier it will be to get right, and adapt to your circumstances. He emphasizes being honest with yourself at all times, and taking a longer view of the road ahead. There are no promises of easy success, only a single promise of improvement if you can muster the discipline necessary to execute even the smallest of changes. From one step...

Give fear the BOOT! If you pick up and read "Unleash The Warrior Within", we'd hope you would want to tap into learning how to focus, function capably through fear and hit a target, (and not just the physical targets, mind you) but all the others that come up in life as well. That is precisely what the book promises and accomplishes. Machowicz will show you in a very straight forward and result-oriented way how to achieve RESULTS. Tangible, real, completely proof-worthy results. Not a book for wimps, as really looking at what you need to do and how to do it and even why it hasn't gotten accomplished BEFORE requires looking at yourself very honestly...and that is extremely difficult for most people...Luckily Machowicz easily manages to be clear and compassionate for the struggles we all have around fear...this book will give you USABLE tools. (Also, he tells great stories, and some of them are very funny!) The book was so awesome both my husband and I completed training seminars with this intelligent, gifted man. Not dead, can't quit!

I ordered this book while on an Amazon shopping spree. When it arrived I stood there going "What was I thinking?". Navy SEALS, macho man on the cover, mean stare and a title that reads "Unleash the warrior.." Anyway, I've made some stupid purchases in the past, so at least it wasn't as if this was the first one.
A few days later I got the flu and had to stay in bed for a few days, so I started paging through this macho title. And suddenly I propped myself up, and got a pen and paper for notes. This book was good!

It seems as if most of the macho stuff was concentrated on the cover. Okay, so the author tells quite a few stories about his SEAL-days, but always to illustrate a point. Funny thing is, the point was often related to un-macho things, such as (his own) fear and feelings of inadequacy.

As I lay there reading, I soon came to realise that this was the VERY BEST self-improvement book I've ever read. Yes, even better than Covey's "Seven Habits" (because Machovitz's advice will work for everyone, his ideas are not pie-in-the-sky, and the methods have been tried, tested and perfected in numerous very difficult situations). If you are from the Carnegie school, you are also in for a surprise - this guy is genuine, and not once does he imply anything along the line of "fake it till you make it". Quite the contrary.

Machovitz is a good writer, and his editor also did a great job. I enjoyed the book thoroughly. Not one boring page. His anecdotes from his military days were amusing, captivating and thought-provoking. A good read even if this isn't a leisure book.

The purpose of the book is to provide the reader with "tools" with which to order his life, establish and prioritise goals, and then to equip himself with the right mindset to go out and get it. Very effective. And it works.

While reading the book, I had a pen and paper handy with which I made notes. I used the 8 or so pages I've made and prepared a series of talks for my employees. The results in their lives were as dramatic as the changes in my own.

Don't let the packaging put you off. It's one of the most life-changing books I've ever read.

One of the most valuable verifiable lessons from this book is how far we can go beyond our own self imposed limitations and of course the author's personal story is a great point of reference to remind us of that reality.

I integrated this lesson into my daily tools and was amazed how my mind's "tricks" with exhaustion, thirst and all kind of other excuses to interrupt my difficult tasks gave way to levels of productivity and achievement I had never experienced before.

This book is now a must-read for my business advisory clients.

I still feel I have only applied a small fraction of what the author has developed into a system and being a slow learner it will be a little while before I can report on the full potential of this book, even though I have already seen amazing results.

What I also like about this book is the nice balance between personal experience of the author and how he uses that to reinforce the concepts.

This book is now glued to my desk!

Great entertaining stories woven throught this book keeps the whole process moving. There are many new ideas that I needed to reread and pratice, but it did not seem like work at all. I am over 50 yrs. old and wish I would have been able to read this in my twenties, so I bought it for my son. He is glad I did. I give this book five stars.

I have this book for my Terms and Concepts real estate course and I find it to be hard to understand. I need study aids to understand what the definitions mean. There are terms mentioned in beginning chapters that are not defined until later in the book and that is very confusing. IF the book was meant to be cumulative-chapters building on previous chapters, I am not finding that.

I have been so blessed by this book! Maybe it is because God is working in me regarding what I think, believe, and say, but I have found it most helpful. I am not sure that anything he has written is new to me, but it is the way he has written it that so hits home with me. I am battling so needed health changes including weight loss. I am realizing that I have told myself that I can't lose the weight for so long that that is exactly what my beliefs have produced in my life! I found that the author's practical steps to change doing just that! Actually, I know it is God who is working through this book! I highly recommend it.

Creflo Dollar presents 8 biblically based principles he believes will help readers live the life they dream about in 8 STEPS TO CREATE THE LIFE YOU WANT. Each principle is presented with personal examples from Pastor Dollar's life along with numerous scripture references. He places a great deal of emphasis on the importance our thoughts play on our successes and failures, and on not allowing past experiences to cripple the future. He discusses the importance of serving God and having faith in Him, even when we are going through difficult times, and he argues that in doing so, healing often results. His personal example, depression after a loss in his family and his dedication to remaining committed to doing God's work, will inspire readers to do the same when faced with challenges of their own.

8 STEPS TO CREATE THE LIFE YOU WANT is packed with practical tips and supporting scripture, however, the audio book version poses some unique challenges, despite the fact that Leonard Dozier did an excellent job reading. Many readers, like myself, tend to multi-task when listening to audio books and listen while driving or exercising. The challenge for multitaskers is that numerous scriptures are cited throughout, but not read. As a result, listeners need to keep a pen and pad handy so they can take notes and write down scriptures to look up later in order to get the most from this book. While I would rate the print version higher, I still recommend the audio version of 8 STEPS TO CREATE THE LIFE YOU WANT, especially for those who may not otherwise find time to read it. In a perfect world, readers would purchase both versions, the audio for listening and the print version for further research.

In his book, "8 Steps to Create the Life You Want" author Dr. Creflo Dollar inspires the reader take a closer look at their life compared to God's Word. This has been helpful for me because I have been in a spiritual "rut" of sorts. By taking each step carefully with clear, focused attention, Dr. Dollar leaves nuggets, practial applications (or what I would call principles) and reminds the reader of the power created through spiritually developed words, thoughts, emotions, decisions, actions, habits and character which delivers us to our destiny -- and when the above are not founded upon the Word of God, we live beneath our privilages and often outside of God's will for us.

As a writer, I enjoy the book most because I can interact with practical applications by writing down areas of success in which I desire and searching the scripture related to these elements of success. Kinda like the research for which I was trained.

At less than $15, this is a book you'll want to purchase for others, share with your children and refer to when you feel like slipping backwards.

Be sure to keep reading to reach chapter three where entrepreneurship takes off in the most subtle way, selling mini toys at school. (We had a little trouble getting entranced in chapters one and two.) But soon after, Greg is creating and selling homemade comic books. The comic book assembly is explained (including drawings) which is a nice touch for readers who would like to try and create their own. It's never too early to let your child write and create their own book.

I especially enjoyed the competitive relationship with the girl next door and how feelings (anger, admiration, jealousy, etc.) were expressed throughout. My son would often ask to continue reading as I finished a chapter.

Money, sales and partnership ideas are nicely addressed. You read about advertisement examples kids are exposed to at school (there is a surprisingly long list), ideas on why money is important, compromises needed when working with a partner, and the good feelings that arise from making donations.

I think my favorite part is when Greg realizes (through discussion with the school board) that he was as guilty as all the other advertisers. He was also targeting the children at school. "He was the hunter, and they were the prey." Actually, this is not a bad thing as entrepreneurs need to understand their target audience but it is the first book I have read that addresses this issue. A++

My nine year old son has read my book so I wasn't surprised when he asked, "How come none of the books we read mention taxes?" (We've read a few entrepreneur books recently.) I had to laugh and remind him, "Not everyone enjoys doing taxes... or even reading about it, so maybe the author decided to leave that technical part out."

Of all the Andrew Clements school books I've read, Lunch Money was by far the least engaging. The reason for this is that a large part of the book focuses on numbers instead of people, and where Clements has succeeded in the past is in his ability to make us really like his leading characters. Greg, the lead character in this book, is not very nice. He's largely driven by money and selfishness, and although Clements does try to make Greg more personable by depicting his change of attitude, the change does not come off convincingly.

The concept itself behind the book is terrific: schools are hypocritical because while they profess to be trying to promote certain values and healthy lifestyles, the actions districts take are at times directly opposed to the high moral standards the districts are imposing on the students.

I did enjoy the book, and recommend it to those looking to read more of Andrew Clements' books. I would pick up Frindle, The School Story, or The Report Card first however.

I'm a nine year old boy from NY. This book is funny and serious, too. This boy Greg wants to make lots of money while copycats try to steal his ideas. He makes money by selling little chunky comics. I recommend this book to everyone.

This is certainly a good textbook, but reading it was a real chore. The style is very dry and I had a really hard time maintaining my focus on the text. (The Amazon review claims that this book is "engaging" - um, no.) When I could stay focused, though, I learned quite a bit. Chapter 5 - Assessment and Career Planning - had the most useful info, with lots of assessments listed and their uses.

Great text!

I ordered this book to help me in my esthetics class and it came in very handy. I did come across a couple of ingredients that were not in the book, but for the most part it was very helpful.

This is a very good dictionary to have on hand. I would recommend this book for everyone! It has a section in the front so that you under stand the skin, skin types & conditions, skin physiology, and product penetration. It has every ingredient for a-z. It is just a great, handy tool to have around to better help you and clients with the skin and products.

Out Dated Info

I found this book to be some what out dated. There were alot of ingredients that where not listed in this book and some our quite common when working with skin care products. It seemed to have some but not all of whats in your cosmetics so I did not find it to be very useful at all. Its on a shelf at home and not at work where it was intended to be.

Overpriced

There was very little that I found in this book that I didn't find in other resources on the subject. It's way overpriced for what it delivers.

In addition to listing many standard ingredients, this book also lists botanicals which are listed by their English name with other common names listed right after. And they are cross-referenced. A very good brief review of skin physiology, function, components, structures and layers along with product penetration and testing and skin types and conditions enhance the book. Great for newbies or experienced skin care professionals.

Networking Bible

In "Make Your Contacts Count," Lynne Waymon and Anne Baber have created a networking bible for today's professionals - in any profession or life stage. Reading chapter after chapter, I was able to identify both short and long term strategies to build and nurture my network. In addition, I was struck by the number of practical, simple tips which can be easily learned and practiced in all my interactions - professional and personal. The book provides current real life examples, as well as theory behind authors' recommendations. As a baby boomer with over 30 years of professional experience, networking was something for sales and marketing types. Professionals in private practice or business - lawyers, accountants, consultants - called it rainmaking. For most of us, it was something we only thought about when we were job searching. While job searching is addressed in one chapter, the book is really about how to build relationships - six stages described and how to strengthen. I'm convinced ..... networking is the essential career survival tactic and a core competency for today's leaders.

This new edition of Making Your Contacts Count hits the bullseye. The authors state that networking is the essential professional competency in today's business world. Clearly, this book is the essential guide to ramping up your networking skills. Making Your Contacts Count provides substantial practical actions. For instance, strategic advice like how to plan your "agenda" for conversations is interspersed with tips like how to remember names(ex. repeat the first name and introduce that person to someone else..it works!) In our study of organizational success, Shaping Your HR Role: Succeeding in Today's Organizations we found that effective networking was a tactic often used by those who achieve results. I recommend this guide to all people who need to influence others in today's complex organizations.
