This book helped me secure a great job. I read five or six books on the same subject and this one by far was the best. It gives you the nuts and bolts of what you need to do. I highly recommend this book.

I just finished this book, and find it to be poorly written, and carelessly laid out. At the end of each section there are comments by people who are "in the industry". These comments are repetitive to the subject covered in the pages prior, and it seems that either the authors writing was tailored to fit the "industry experts", or vice versa. The sample answers to the sample interview questions seem too cut and paste, and often site examples that are not applicable to most applicants.

Not an awful book, but definitely not up to my standards.

I found How to Interview Like a Top MBA to be an excellent work. I know that this book was written for recent graduates from college and MBA programs, but the principles it conveys are relevant for professionals in a wide range of arenas. As I read it, I thought of friends of mine who are educators and lawyers and I know they would benefit from it tremendously, so I will be giving copies to them. I wish I had known about this book when I was interviewing for positions in the loan industry. I could have benefitted from it greatly then, but I am happy to know about it now. I recommend this work very highly.

I purchased this book about a year ago and put it to use in the last 2 weeks with 7 interviews. The feedback I gained from the reviewers was much better than most of the information I gleaned from the book.

It is important that no one, while searching for a job, use the answers in the book. Apparently they are wrote and are fully expected by the interviewers. The real thing to learn from the book is to begin with an example but always lead into how you learned from whatever the incident was and bring that to what you have accomplished with what you learned.

Overall I am not unhappy I bought the book, but it will not be a book I keep as a reference.

The pirate motif has been somewhat oversubscribed of late and the dearth of pirate products is proof. Pirate School fits perfectly into the genre and it is not a let down. The animation and narrative are entertaining and compelling enough for a 5 year old and not too rough or scary. This is a good pirate story.

Great book for early reading

This is a very enjoyable pirate story for beginning readers or for us parents to read to our kids. It is about kids of pirates that go to school every day just like toehr kids, only they go in a school bus painted row boat to a giant pirate ship/public school. The lessons they teach are backwards to our own morals and not fair, as the kids are to be greedy and not share, and worse yet to fight when they have disputes. But these rules dont work when it is treasure hunt day on the spooky island. Although each boy claims to have found the treasure first, they quickly learn tha if they are to survice, they must ingore the pirate rules and instead cooperate, share, help out, and trust each other. Wonderful story, I highly reccommend.

"It was a little scary, a little funny, and easy to read" said my son Toby, aged 6.5, after reading this excellent book. He also says there were only about ten words he did not know. The illustrations are good and they do not give the story away -- Toby had to read the words. Toby says "don't give up!".

My 7 year old son is obsessed with Pirates. This is his favorite book. He makes me pretend that he is Pete and his brother is Grimy and I need to substitute the names. He is autistic and learning for him is difficult, but we have taken suggestions from this book to make school fun for him as well. He learned math by using gold coins and likes to do everything the boys do in the book. It is a fantastic book which explains how important it is to share and not to fight with others. I highly recommend this book.

Book Artfully Done

This small book is done just as if it were printed in Washington's time.
The lettering on the jacket is touchable just like real engraving. The pages in the small book are uneven. The illustrations are all black and
white, highly detailed, and just like what you would have seen in
Washington's day.
The names are sometimes hard to follow, but then the author gives you
a clue and you are again able to understand it.
The story gives you a real feel for how close the Colonies were to losing.
If Washington had not been cleverly making it look like he was
going to attack one place but actually hit them at another more vunerable place, we surely would not be free today.
I plan to gift every grandchild with this book when they are old enough to
really understand it. It makes the Revolution interesting, not stodgy.

This chronicling of the spies of the Revolutionary War (mostly viewed from the American side) was so interesting that I read it from cover to cover in one day. Even though it's targeted for 6-9th grades, I as an adult thoroughly enjoyed it. It's fun to get another view of the war from the espionage side. It made me appreciate the Patriots who fought for our liberty in a whole new way.

In preparation on a column that I am doing for middle and teen readers on espionage, I picked this title up at the library on the recommendation of the young adult librarian. What a great suggestion! Allen does a fantastic job of leading the reader through the incredible story of spying, double agents, and treason during the Revolutionary War. This book has it all - invisible ink, disguises, codebooks, hidden messages, and more. And readers are invited to test themselves at decoding, using a "mask", and other spy talents. Recommended for school use in American History units, and for anyone (gr 4 and up) that is looking for something really different and entertaining, while being completely factual! This would make a great read-aloud for teachers too.

George Washington, Spymaster: How the Americans Outspied the British and Won the Revolutionary War is a National Geographic book written by Thomas B. Allen. This young adult book is as informative as it is entertaining. In the books that I have read about the Revolution, the Patriot spy network isn't given much coverage.

Allen starts during the French and Indian War when Washington was a young major. He was sent out by Virginia Royal Governor Robert Dimwiddie. Washington realized early on that he had to rely on intelligence gathered from civilians and the Indians to learn about French forces. Washington wrote "There is nothing more necessary than good Intelligence to frustrate a designing enemy & nothing that requires greater pains to obtain."

When the Revolutionary War began, Washington built on those information-gathering techniques that he used during the French and Indian War. Washington became a "spymaster," handling large numbers of individual spies. At first, Washington wanted an intelligence network of military men. The first such group was the Knowlton Rangers, which eventually evolved into the modern Army Rangers and Special Forces. The Rangers got off to a disastrous start, and Washington realized that "Instead of relying on officers to gather military intelligence, he would do what the Sons of Liberty had done in Boston. He would use civilians--sharp-witted Patriots who could spy while making believe they were Tories."

Thomas gives the reader a tutorial on spying and spies. He tells us the difference between an agent, a double agent, an intelligence officer and a snitch. He provides the code created by Benjamin Tallmadge for Patriot correspondence. He also hides messages throughout the book using this code. He details the tools of the spy trade from the 1700s including invisible ink, hiding messages in feather quills, small silver balls for hiding messages (they could be swallowed when captured), etc. Also, the Patriots were masters at forging documents and making sure they fell into British hands. One civilian woman relayed information to the military by the way she hung her laundry. But for all the information Washington received from his spy network, there was always the danger of dealing with double agents and traitors (Benedict Arnold).

One thing I found especially interesting about George Washington, Spymaster is how many agents and double agents were not identified until well after the Revolution. It has taken until the 1900s and the opening of British papers for Americans to discover that some of their trusted Patriots were actually working for Britain.

This may be a book written for young adults, but I certainly learned quite a bit from Thomas Allen in George Washington, Spymaster.

When I purchased this book I thought it was a study guide that included practice tests for each topic. I was not aware that it was just tests. This book did not have sections for review; therefore, in order to answer the questions I was pulling data from the internet. The questions in the book were by far the most difficult questions to answer unless you are a medical science major or nursing student In my opinion this book was not geared toward undergraduate level credits. I do not believe that this book should be sold separately without being advised of the content, and reference a textbook to retrieve the information from. While this book is a great tool along with study material, in my opinion it cannot stand alone.

This is another self-help book that I wouldn't recommend to anyone. The book begins with PMA and NMA talismans, in other words a gimmick. It reminds me of the old-timer street hawkers that sold elixirs that would help any illness you had.

I do believe in the power of your mind being part of what you need to concentrate on to be whatever you want to be. I just don't see a need to have someone push a "end-all" to get there. If theirs is the ONLY way to achieve it, why are there so many self-help books on the market? Also, it is mostly a rewrite of Hill's THINK AND GROW RICH and if you want to know about that book, buy it, not this one.

If you are someone that needs a push and a gimmick to get your going in the right direction, this audio book many give you what you need. If you don't, then it will not hold much interest for you.

At age 21 I read this wonderful book, and it changed my life forever!
The book inspired me to be more, learn more and achieve so much more, while sheltering me from all the negatives that surround us. Over the last 31 years I have become successful, in great part to this book, which inspired me to write my own self help book: THE POWER OF BEING DIFFERENT.
What really inspires people is real life examples of successful individuals that had been unsuccessful and struggling for many years. This book keeps you pumped up in every single chapter.
It actually inspired me to write and publish 5 of my own books.
My goal was to write a book like this one that would inspire and lift someone up in every single chapter.
THIS ONE IS A WINNER!!!!! Don't miss out.

I'm a busy venture capitalist who normally would not take the time to write a review about a book that I bought for someone else. But, that's precisely the point. I read "Success Through A Positive Mental Attitude" 30 years ago and it has made all the difference in my life. It can in yours, too, but you have to apply it and constantly monitor your thinking. Everything starts as a thought. The Golden Gate bridge started as an idea in an architect's mind. He then put it on paper and showed it to others in a positive manner and with an enthusiasm that persuaded others to believe in the idea and to take action.

There is one other book that can also make quite a difference and will guide you with wisdom, hope and faith that can fuel the positive energy that comes from PMA. That is the good old fashioned Bible. I'm not religious or a "Bible thumper;" just a guy who wishes he'd read it 30 years ago as well. The two books will arm you for a great life. And, you would like to do something collectively as well (but it is not necessary in order to benefit from these two books), then I encourage you to read my book, "ResoNation." This is unquestionably one of the very best books ever written on the science of personal success. Written in the same vein as the Napoleon Hill classic, "Think and Grow Rich," this book is full of inspiring examples of how focusing the mind upon intended positive outcomes can be the catalyst to great accomplishment and personal growth.

The message is extremely powerful and its strict application MUST invariably lead you towards the fulfillment of whatever aims you focus its principles towards.

Jason Alba and Jesse Stay have taught me far more about the functionality of Facebook as a business tool far better and more detailed than Facebook itself. The questions I had before starting the book were answered upon completion. Very impressive read and it's written in a very up to date format that keeps your attention throughout.

I enjoyed the book and found so much solid value that I purchased a dozen to give to my professional clients and candidates as business gifts.

I learned more about Facebook from this book in fifteen minutes than I have in the entire year I've been using it. I learned not only what I can do and how to do it, but what I should be doing to help myself and my business.

I'm not exactly a newbie online - we're getting up to 30 years since I first used email and got on the Internet, and I'm been on Facebook for about a year.

I'll admit it though, I barely understood Facebook until I read "I'm on Facebook -- Now What ???"

It's pretty much the indispensable guide to professionals and business owners using, or considering using, Facebook.

I was lucky enough to meet Jesse Stay, co-author of this book at GSP West a few months back. He offered me a copy to give away on my blog, Beth's Blog. So, I thought since it was a thin book, I'd give it a quick read on the plane, jot down a page of notes in my moleskin and do give it away. Well, there was so much that I learned that I have to be selfish and keep for myself. So, buy your own copy - indispensible.

This is a feel good book attempting to make an argument that people in business can be "professionals." By definition, business people exist to create and manage a business entity inorder to generate a profit. Professionals are licensed individuals. They are mandated by law is to protect the public's health, safety and welfare through the services that they provide to the community. This book is an attempt to corrupt and diminish the definition of professionalism.

Should be required reading for anyone aspiring to develop themselves professionally in a professional services firm. Especially pertinent for leaders and managers.

As Maister points out, some of his recommendations require the courage of ones' convictions to be realized. Yet, this book provides inspiration (along with wonderful advice) to achieve its ends.

Maister is simply the best in this niche...and this book, once again, demonstrates that.

David Maister does a great job of explaining the fundamentals essential to anyone that has a job or is looking for a job in consulting. Splitting the book into three sections made it flow well and easy to follow and comprehend. Furthermore, Maister really focuses on the things that you should look for within yourself as well as the firm and clients. He makes you think about what one should really focus on in your career and the benefits you can receive from your job. This book also guides an employee in explaining situations that will probably occur at some point in their working career. David Maister gives you the tools that you need to be successful; all the person has to do is apply it to their everyday life.

The principles that Maister discussed in his book showed me that there is a balance between the client, the firm, and yourself. This balance is important because it dictates how successful you will become. It is also important to value your client as well as engage with them so that you really know who the client is and what their needs and wants are. Even though you must achieve your goals, you should help others to do the same by establishing a relationship, which in turn will make the working environment healthy and successful.

There is so much information you take a way from this book that will help you in your career as well as your life. I advise everyone to buy this book, because it is very beneficial to the success of anyone's career. Through the use of catchy phrases and clear, practical explanations, I feel that anyone can read this book and take something from it to apply to their career.

Excellent Book - Speaks directly to consultants

Finally a book that speaks to the heart of what consulting is(or professional services in general), with no hype, no distractions or flavor-of-the-month thoughts. I had heard David Maister at a recent consulting conference and was quite struck by his focus on people and 'execution of strategies' as being the core of successful consulting firms.

This book is pithy without being trite and if you have been in consulting a while, you can directly relate to what the author is referring to. There are many suggestions in this book that are insightful, practical and feel right on the money to a practictioner.

While by no means a classic, it is certainly a must read.

This book is a must have for anyone who purchases the Pentax K20D. While it is a near mirror of the actual manual, it is written in such a manner that can be understood by any and all.

Again, A must have.

Manage your energy, not your time

This book explains how managing your energy, not your time, is far more productive.

Focusing on the 4 elements of power usage/renewal (spiritual, mental, physical and emotional) can help you become a more productive professional, no matter your field. The idea of renewal, that we all need pause, from micro pauses (taking a deep breath and closing your eyes), to sustained removals (two-week hiking trip for example), is one you don't hear about much. Far more often (managers in particular) people tend to think you need to work long hours almost as if it were a badge of honor to work more than the person in the cube next to you. This is a myth, the most successful people are the ones who bring high energy to their work - not the most hours. Renewal, and recharging, are the keys to keeping a healthy level of productivity.

Time is NOT money; this old saying was from our parents generation. It is wrong through and through. Focusing on your energy, and how and when you use it, will provide far more success and productivity. This book tells you how to do it and for this reason I highly recommend this book.

You have the power, now use it effectively!

Having read other related books/articles by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz, they've become trusted advisors for those looking to be more productive. This work helps executives develop their own strategies for maintaining peak levels of their mental and creative performance while avoiding the alternatives - being stressed-out, burnt-out and/or functioning way below their actual peak capacity.

In this book, Loehr and Schwartz have effectively translated their insights from sports life training of star athletes to business life training of so called "corporate athletes"; All aspiring and seasoned executives could benefit in dealing with the high demands on their energy by considering their strategies. Supported by interesting cases histories and scientific study results, their key message is simple and effective - that we need certain habits to manage our expenditure and renewal cycles of our energy in four key areas of our lives: Physical, Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual.

For instance, they demonstrate how certain strategies like approaching life as a "sprinter", using alternating bursts of intense effort followed by periods of renewal and downtime. While this may be common sense to some who read it, how many actually follow such advice when the temptation (often supported by incentive reward systems) is so high to keep working harder and staying in the flow continuously more like a marathoner?

Bottom-line: There is much here that will help an open-minded executive achieve more in all aspects of life. I recommend listening to the book while exercising.

Life Balance for the Overworked

A brilliant piece of work. This book describes concrete similarities in what it takes for a World Class Athlete, and an individual in the Corporate World, to excel. It explains how to go about building skills of recovery throughout ones workday, and throughout ones life, to maximize health, enjoyment, and performance. I enjoyed reading the stories of other folks, like myself, who felt squeezed with the endless demands of work and family. While logic says, 'run faster, run harder'; this book has a message which is counterintuitive. Stop, at regular intervals, to nurture, exercise, and free-up yourself. This will actually increase your levels of energy and short circuit the cycle of burnout. Rest and recovery creates fresh inspiration, fresh energy for creativity. Life balance is a process, and this book can be a great aid for those looking to create it.

This book offers ideas about little changes you can make in your life to improve your health, happiness, job performance, relationships, etc. None of the ideas require big behavior changes, or big time commitments, yet they yield big, positive results.

If you feel overloaded and overwhelmed, and too busy to even think about making time to do anything about it, this book will meet you where you are at and support you in improving the quality of your life.
