The definitive book on the subject of procrastination.Review Date: 2008-09-21
That's a strong statement, but I've read lots of book on personal self-management and how to organize your time effectively (including "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen R. Covey and "Getting Things Done" by David Allen) -- and I can honestly say that, for me at least, "The Now Habit" is - by far - the best out of all of them.
If you struggle with having more balance and control over your home and work life, if you allow perfectionism or fear of failure (or success) to hinder your work productivity, or if you just want to start enjoying the good things that life has to offer - while at the same time improving your work efficiency and productivity ... then I highly urge you to get this book. You'll learn how to use time-proven tools (such as the Unschedule) and guidelines on how to make the most out of your life, and starting living life to its fullest extent.
I can't overestimate the value of the principles outlined in this book. Too often people who procrastinate feel angry and ashamed of their behavior - without doing anything to FIX the underlying problem. Neil Fiore not only explains why people tend to procrastinate, but he also provides valuable tools that you can use to overcome your bad habits, and replace them with positive and productive habits.
It's not an expensive or overly long book -- and the best part is that the tools mentioned in this book are quite flexible and can easily be melded with other techniques, such as those outlined in "Getting Things Done" by David Allen.
If you struggle with stress from overwork or procrastination, do yourself a favor and buy or borrow this book. You may have been soured on other books that claimed to help with your problems, but told you nothing more than what you already knew. But The Now Habit really identifies WHY we procrastinate, and gives you the means to overcome it - if you commit yourself to doing them.
Also, if you know someone who struggles with these problem, there's a chapter in the end that gives advice on how to deal with the procrastinators in your life. (Although I think this book would make a pretty good gift for them as well.)

Great bookReview Date: 2008-09-15
The author gives a good history of why she started doing what she does (it is basically an interpretation of the myers-briggs personality test). However her color-coded system is organized in a much better way than any other source I've found. She uses categories like Green/Gold to describe someone rather than the four-letter system, which for me is far more comprehensible. The colors are neutral terms as well - rather than the Keirsey system of 'descriptors' like 'healer', 'mastermind', etc. Her goal is to help people deal with OTHER people in the workplace, and I think she gives you the tools to do just that.
The most convincing for me was that I jokingly made some coworkers take 'the test' at a work related party and the correlation was extremely high. Most people agreed not just with the overall summary of their character type, but also with the 'negative aspects' of their personality (which she cutely presents as 'challenges'). Spouses, if they were present, also agreed with the description.
So if you truly don't know what career to choose - this book may help point you in the right direction, but isn't going to get you to the office door (it's too general). If you are trying to figure out what would fit you best, or how to make things better at your current workplace (or even why you are not happy at your current workplace) so that you have a foundation to move forward from - then this is the book for you.

Nice addition to "Getting to Yes"Review Date: 2008-07-06
Getting past no by William Ury is a nice addition to the basic concepts which were laid out in "Getting to yes". Basically, the content of both books is very similar, Getting to Yes provides the basis and Getting past No provides concrete advise for negotiating and elaborates on the things discussed in Getting to Yes. That said, Getting Past No can be read independently from Getting to Yes.
The book describes five steps of "Break Through Negotiation". These steps are hard since they often reflect doing the opposite of what your natural reaction might be in the particular situation.
These five steps are:
- Don't react. Don't react when being attacked, but step back.
- Don't argue. Instead try to agree with them and understand their position.
- Don't reject. Don't reject their position, instead try to reframe their position to understand their underlying interests.
- Don't push your ideas or proposal. Try to work together with them to make a proposal together which is best for both interests.
- Don't escalate. When the above fails, don't escalate the situation and instead think about your alternative and try to describe the situation as it just happened.
The book is very readable and has lots of good and useful examples. It's thin and easy to read in a relative short time. It doesn't contain THAT much information though, for more negotiation techniques check their "Getting to Yes".
Recommended to read after Getting to Yes.

Techniques to negotiate with not just the good guys but also the bad onesReview Date: 2008-03-17
The author teaches 5 simple negotiation techniques - Get perspective of the situation by 'going to the balcony', step to the adversary's side, re-frame adversary's thoughts and beliefs, build them a golden bridge. If any of the above 4 techniques don't help you - use power to educate your adversaries. The author has cautiously avoided using the word 'adversary'. He recommends everyone to take a 'co-operative' approach and not a 'manipulative' approach.
If there is one thing that is more important than any of the suggested techniques - it is PREPARATION. "The best place to make mistakes is in rehearsing with a friend or colleague, not in negotiating for real". This echoes Jim Champ's "Practice sessions provide you an environment to fail safely" theory.
The importance of having a BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement) is re-enforced in this book. Overall, this is a very good book to read to improve your negotiation skills.

Sorry guys, but this book makes some exaggerated/untrue claimsReview Date: 2008-09-03
Another untrue claim is that we can completely replace 100% of our motor fuel consumption. This is not true. The USDA and DOE published a report saying that we can displace about 30% of our motor fuel consumption using farmland and forest lands. At best we can displace maybe 40%. And realistically, the displacing probably won't happen for quite a while.
Like I said before, I have not read the entire book. Maybe the rest of uses sound logic and diligent research. Maybe not. Make sure you check your facts and do research. Many people make claims and state them as facts, when in reality, they did not do their homework. And make sure to do your homework on the things that I have said too.

By Eldon Taylor
ISBN 1-40191-853-0 (Hay House, 2007)
Nothing is more vital than questioning our beliefs about how we see the world and our relationship to it. Reading Eldon Taylor's book helped me see through many of my self-limiting beliefs and illusions through a very rational and comprehensive approach. Most people are caught in an endless cycle of self-delusion, which only reinforces itself with time because we seek to reinforce previously held beliefs and filter out the rest as irrelevant. If you feel stuck, this book will help.

Do "48 Days..." or every next day of your life will be a waste. Review Date: 2008-09-16
Handy insights but not a lot of meat.Review Date: 2008-09-01
All of that is fine and dandy, but give me the good stuff.
Several chapters in, Miller gets into the actual meat and potatoes of the book: resumés, interviews, and follow-ups. The most helpful information I gleaned from this is that while a resumé is a great way to get your foot in the door for an interview, it is not going to land you the job. And while it seems only to be common sense that your personality will actually get you the interview, you'd be surprised at what wrong things people will say in them (and Miller provides plenty o' examples). He explains that 85% of getting the job is how you sell yourself and how well your interviewing techniques are sharpened. He also says you should make contact with the hiring manager (not HR, personnel, etc.) at least three times in order to make yourself remembered by the person in charge of hiring. Again, this is a classic selling technique--one used by salespeople the world over.
All in all, if you aren't comfortable with narrowing down your companies of choice, making direct contact with persons within the company, and making a "hard sell" of yourself, this book may not be helpful for you but may point out some parts of the job search that you weren't previously aware of.

If you think it's hard to quit smoking;try getting rid of clutter.Review Date: 2008-10-03
I managed to quit smoking about 20 years ago, when I was smoking over 2 packs a day.It was something I had tried to do many times but without success. I tried every trick in the book, but before long I was back smoking as much as ever. Why couldn't I quit? No reason at all,I certainly enjoyed it and the enjoyment obviously exceeded my will power. As a matter of fact,I have not even become an anti-smoker and still enjoy the aroma of smokers;but have decided to let them do it.
However getting rid of stuff, junk, clutter,or whatever you choose to call it has been a whole different matter--at least for me.
The reason clutter collects is different for different people. However; the reason always boils down to one thing,at least for most people. Some people border on being compulsive or have a mental issue;but that is the exception. If you really want to see how bad that can be I suggest you read "Cadillac Jack" by Larry McMurtry;where you will find a guy who completely filled his house with bird nests. However; there are those who just don't want to throw anything away, keep it because it might come in handy,it's still good, someone might want it,etc.
In my case ,I feel it is different.Don't we all.I have always been engrossed in hobbies and interests and along with these interests have come the "stuff".And why do I have it? Sure,I've spent money and time on it over the years;but I like it, and it has been a lot of fun collecting it.To each his own,I suppose. If you have time and money, you might as well enjoy it. Travel,Drinking,Sports,Gardening,Photography,Music,Reading,Shopping,Dining, or whatever you choose to do is fine;but in many cases, a natural result is the accumulation of stuff.
It would be nice to be able to collect anything you wanted and have someplace to put it. Some wealthy people have had the luxury to do this ,but in the end they have to pass on and leave it all behind. And that has given the world its collections and museums.
So,what about this book and the stuff it talks about getting rid of?
Well, even if you are like me,with my personal library of over 7,000 books (and still growing),my collection of music, collection of rocks, minerals and fossils, collection of puzzles, collection of YO-YO's, ;You are going to be like me.We need all the help we can get and this book is filled with the help we need.
By the way,I have been working at this,as much by necessity as desire.I have a few books similar to this one. See my reviews for "Clutter's Last Stand" by Don Aslett on December 29,2005 and "Clutter Control" by by the Editors of FC&A Publishing on February 15,2008;they are both excellent.
So even for collectors, there is a lot of useful help in these books and we need to keep using the ideas ,if for no other reason than to help us keep it under control or to make room for something "new"
I can still remember the wise words of my dear old Grandmother who once said;
"Remember,everything you get,takes looking after"
I guess it's OK if you enjoy your "stuff",but if you don't;
GET RID OF IT!!!!
This book will definitely help you get started.

Stop hoarding and Start Living!Review Date: 2008-09-03
And concerning that over run basement: "It's not like you come downstairs one day and make a decision that you'd rather fill the basement with old lawn furniture and off-season clothes than have a place where the family can gather for movie night."
He lists every excuse you can make:
1-I might need it one day
2-It's too important to let go
3-I can't get rid of it, it's worth a lot of money
4-My house is too small (You should either move to a larger house now (and I mean NOW) or get rid of some of your stuff.
5-I don't have the time
6-I don't know how it got like this.
7-It isn't mine.
8-It's too overwhelming.
9-It's not a problem my husband/wife etc. just thinks it is.
Walsh takes you through each room in the house and then helps you determine the purpose of that room and if the current things in that room fulfill that purpose with specifics like, don't save catalogs, reduce books to shelf capacity.
He encourages you to let go of things that you don't love anymore. Don't keep them hoping that they will appreciate in value.
The kitchen clean up covers cleaning out and organizing work zones. "And NO. Junk. Drawer. Do I make myself clear?"
The book is packed full of a monthly maintenance calendar once you've cleared the clutter, room by room help, daily chore list, etc.
I really recommend this book if you need to stop hoarding and start living.
A life-changing book!Review Date: 2008-08-21
Basically, there are two reasons people have trouble thinning down.
1) They have an irrational sentimental attachment to an item. This explains why people keep broken, unusable goods, or family heirlooms which are more of a burden than a blessing.
2) They feel they might need the item "one day". This usually boils down to a fear of scarcity. In our decadent Western society, how likely is it that we won't be able to run to any number of big box stores down the street and pick up whatever we need, at the time that we need it? Do yourself a favor, he argues, and get rid of the stuff that's weighing you down.
I did find a few of his edicts a tad draconian. For example, no bronzed baby shoe mementos, and never ever more than 3 magazines in the home at a time? Really?
However! You must keep in mind, that this is coming from a man who has personally witnessed a lot of the worst cases in the country. I think I can speak for the majority of Americans when I say that my house certainly doesn't look as bad as some of the "before's" on his show. Unfortunately, my home doesn't look as beautiful as the "after's" either. For most of us, whose homes are somewhere in-between, this book is the perfect kick in the pants to get a bit of clearing, organizing and beautifying accomplished.
Walsh patiently, reasonably and logically lays out some of the common thoughts and fears that prevent us from getting rid the clutter and living in the best space possible. I felt inspired to clean up my act and while my home still isn't "perfect" it's now looking a darn sight better than it has in years. It's a difference that you can see! For this reason alone, I give this book 5 stars. Highly, highly, highly recommend.
Walsh's clueless, toxic helpReview Date: 2008-08-13
One of his organizational strategies is shame, one of the most damaging emotions to mental and emotional health. In one episode, he drove a Korean woman not just to tears, but to actual sobbing, over the state of her guest room. He pummeled her with questions like: "Would you want your mother to stay in this room? Is that what you think of her? Is that how much she means to you?" Given the reverence bestowed upon elders in the Asian culture, it was especially mean.
Furthermore, disorganization is major feature of several neurological disorders, particularly ADD, and many of the afflicted are undiagnosed and untreated. Given their serious, lifelong struggles to get organized, it would not be surprising if a disproportionate number showed up on these TV shows seeking help. Shame would be particularly destructive to these individuals. As a form of toxic help, shame is a major player.
Walsh just doesn't get it: organization or lack thereof is not a moral issue.

negative comments, I waited a long time before I actually bought it.
I noticed in one of the reviews by a psychiatrist, he said that Joe was
trying to promote himself. After reading Zero Limits, (three times through
because it was so good), I did not see it this way. I could see that he did make mention of his other books as well as many other authors and their books. He promoted many people in Zero Limits, not just himself. It seemed reasonable to me.
The magic in ho'oponopono is it's utter simplicity. It is so simple that
many people will not like it and not believe it. Due to it's subtleness,
I reread his book several times to pick up all the simple guidance that
Joe and Dr. Len offer. If someone chooses to practice ho'oponopono,
it will change their life. I have so much more peace and acceptance just
by practicing these simple steps. Read the book with an open heart and
an open mind, and experience a quietness that is 'Divine'.

Getting Back to God's Purpose for Your LifeReview Date: 2008-09-27
Monroe's writing is strong and articulate, appealing to the intellect and to the practical. His clear powerful gospel message does not espouse religion but emphasizes the plan and purpose of God, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
The book is filled with scriptural content which guides the reader into an understanding of the precepts of God's Kingdom. Munroe then opens the way for the individual to "Reclaim God's Original Purpose for their life."
This is a book for everyone desirous of fulfilling their destiny while impacting today's culture for God's Kingdom purposes.

Back to Myles Munroe, tho..reading what he has to say, shines the light of illumination, on "the word" as I've never had it explained before. I believe, as another poster said, that he was destined for these times; and, those who take the time, will certainly be blessed, by reading his Kingdom series.
