Mixed feelings about this one

Review Date: 2008-03-02
I have some real mixed feelings about this book. On the one hands I really like how Mr. Whyte used such unconventional ways to get his point across (he uses poetry to point out the flaws in the corporate world), but on the other hand, a lot of the points in the book made me scratch my head and go 'huh?!'.
The material is very deep and even where there is supposed to be just a small, simple message, Whyte seems to make it complicated so that the meaning looks to be more profound.

How much of our corporate productivity is impeded by pettiness and posturing in the workplace? Seems a corporate healer like David Whyte is needed to stand for finding and reminding folks of a different bottom line.

Connections Found!

Review Date: 2006-12-15
Whyte has a unique capacity to make powerful connections between the inner core that fills us with emotion and caring and the places we do our work, sometimes even at the place where our job is located, though not often. His observation that we leave as much as 55% of our true self "in the car" each day when we go in our office to work is so powerfully true. I dare say there are few among us who cannot relate to that feeling. And yet, it is the 55% of ourselves that the company we work for really wants and needs but rarely gets. Unfortunately because of the patriarchal environments that many organizations (not always corporations or even private sector businesses) create we all too often find no real fulfillment in the workplace. That is sad because I never have read any mission statements that pronounce "We ABSOLUTELY are not going to have fun or like one another around here." That makes me think that the realized, oppressives outcome are not intentional. However, we often find ourselves working in and hating very dysfunctional cultures, even if not by design. Whyte introduces the concept of hope in a effort to replace the all-too-present doubt and hegemony of the workplace. We may not be able to express ourselves freely at work but Whyte allows us some freedom to dream of that possibility during our reading of this book.

Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant! If you have a soul, buy this book. If you are not sure....buy this book. This book is an excellent exploration into the meaning of life + my job the incubus = a poetic awakening. David Whyte is a wonderful philosopher.

David Whyte writes in a truly inspiring way. When I worked at the Monterey Bay Aquarium many of us read this book as we struggled to grow better as an organization. This book was the catalyst to many personal "AH HA!" moments. Not just for me, but for many of my colleagues as well. From there I found myself in love with poetry again too. David's poetry is powerful and meaningful. The heart aroused is your own, and worth coming back to.

An invaluable style and reference manual for advertising copywriters

This is the best style manual for advertising copywriters on the market. There may be a new edition that supercedes this one by the time you read this. if so, I would buy it without reservation. I find myself reaching for this time and again when I write. Highly recommended.

The Best Grammar/Usage Book Ever

Review Date: 2006-05-18
I retired a few years ago and wish that I had taken my Gregg Reference Manual with me as a "parting gift." I used to take calls from people regarding grammar questions. Little did they know I would grab this book and easily page to the correct answer. I impressed many people over the years; and then, of course, the answers became second nature to me. I have recommended this book many times and finally am going to purchase my own copy for home. It is a good book just to read. Absolutely EVERYTHING is in there.

All arguments stop here

I am an independent corporate trainer who teaches people to write better at work. When my students ask me for my advice about good books to guide them as they write at work, this is the reference book I recommend.

I also tell them several other things about the book. First, this is not just some handbook that secretaries can use to look up how to format a letter. It is an authoritative reference for all aspects of writing English. It should be next to the dictionary and thesaurus on the shelf of everyone who needs to write at work, from clerks to executives. Second, if your boss or anyone else argues with you about any rule of writing, you only have to point to the relevant entry in this book. All arguments stop there. Third, the size of the book is deceptive. It uses small font and thin paper. With normal font and paper, it would be the size of two or three large dictionaries. That's how much useful stuff is packed in this book.

It takes a while to get used to how the information in the book is formatted, but it is well worth the effort. All entries in the index include page numbers as well as topic numbers, which they call "rules." The book is logically structured around these rules, and it makes related topics easy to find.

I rated this book 5 stars because I think it is superior in all categories for a reference book: comprehensive content, abundant examples, thorough index, authoritative author, and reasonable price.

As a business education teacher, I highly recommend this reference manual to anyone entering the secretarial field. It provides a complete source for answering questions concerning grammar, punctuation, English usage, etc. The well-done index allows easy access to the needed information. It is an absolute MUST for office employees. Eva Lewis, El Cajon, CA

An poorly designed graphic design book is highly suspect. This book is not only ugly but completely uninspired. Perhaps a decent aide for those who have never used the programs at all and don't plan to do any professional design work, but not really a great resource. (You can find out as much or more through the programs' help sections and online forums). I wouldn't waste your money.

This takes the basic information that can be found in the manual or anywhere on the 'net and repackages it as yet another How-to computer book.

Unfortunately, as mentioned above, it is full of errors and examples that make you cringe, both in taste and demonstrating the author doesn't really know how to do it.

When you are reading how to correct a photo in Photoshop, nothing puts you off more than that the example shown is badly corrected. The same goes for all the aesthetically challenged examples and the book itself.

How difficult is it to design and layout an attractive, easily navigated and organised book on graphic design if you are in fact a capable designer?

Unless ofcourse you are not.

Excellent principles of study in an easy-to-read format. When I graduated from high school my GPA hovered around 72. I graduated from college witha 3.87 GPA. This book changed my way of studying forever. I thank Ron for his inspiration and guidance. I still share my book with prospective students. In fact, my younger brother had failed an LPN course with the Army; I rushed him the book and told him to follow Ron's advice. I am proud to announce that my brother graduated at the top of his class and is now employed by a top hospital in NYC. He is only 20 years of age.

Thanks, Ron!

Sincerely,

William at Headstart4@aol.com

Changed the way I learned forever

I read this book many years ago (maybe it was the first or second edition) and it changed my style of studying forever. I was failing my pre-med courses when I found this book. I ended up getting A's in organic chemistry and applied calculus. This book should be required reading before undertaking any serious scholastic endeavor. This is the only book that doesn't disguise the effort that is required in learning - no magic tricks nor skills that only "special" students have - the ability is in all of us and Ron Fry shows you how.

Orville Pierson tells it like it really is! The job search process is hard work. A common complaint that my clients have is they find it difficult to stay organized, stay focused and maintain some semblence of structure in their daily job search activities. The Unwritten Rules of the Highly Effective Job Search provides a framework and methodology that gives my clients a sense of control during what can be an overwhelming process. Each client of mine receives a copy of this book - it is a must read!

I know how the job search can get your down. I think it is the number 1 reason searches get stalled. I know mine did. After several months of searching I was "in the dumps" and couldn't understand why becasue I was following the advice I had read in job search books. Then a friend told me about the "Unwritten Rules of the Highly Effective Job Search". After reading it and putting this very systematic approach into practice my search starting turning around. I found that I had more contacts than I though and by using Pierson's Progress Chart I started feeling better about my progress along the way to finding a job. Each day I can see the progress I am making. No more "in the dumps".

Like many other career books out there, this one presupposes you have tons of friends who are just waiting in the sidelines to roll over and give you a job. Interspersed throughout the book is a story of a neighbor/friend of the author who is trying to land a job. Right at the end of the book, she has an epiphany and realizes that she has known some excellent contacts all along, one of whom ends up giving her a job. It's ridiculous. First of all, how stupid is the woman that she didn't realize this from the start, but, more importantly, how stupid does the author think we are: if I had a bunch of high-placed friends who could give me a job, I wouldn't have bought this book in the first place.

Utter, utter rubbish.
