As a soon-to-be retiring senior military officer, I have read dozens of books on transitioning and most focus on theories and platitudes. Whereas many books are written at such a basic level describing how to prepare a resume and how to dress for an interview, this one simply skips the fluff and gets right down to the basics of sample resumes. This is THE book I would recommend for transitioning senior military officers. I could have saved myself a bit of time and money in skipping the other 20-or-so that I read before finding this one.

I greatly enjoyed the book and have suggested it to many on my friends that are looking into entering the field of pharmaceutical sales. I thought it was extremely beneficial to read to get a flavor of what a pharmaceutical representative do on a day to day basis and how to get into the field. Read this before revising your resume and interviewing for positions it can also save you time in the end if you decide Pharm sales isn't for you.

If you are even remotely thinking of breaking into the pharmaceutical or medical sales industry - BUY THIS BOOK!! Because of this book I just got hired with Johnson & Johnson as a pharmaceutical sales rep. I had no prior experience in this industry and I beat out 3 other qualified candidates because I followed Tom's advice to a T. I highly recommend this book if you are seeking a job in the pharma or medical sales industry. It is an extremely difficult task to get hired in this industry but once you do you will be so proud of yourself and on your way to a fulfilling life-long career.

Excellent reference book for career choices. It has tons of infomation on how various college majors translate into real jobs, and what the expected financial rewards will likely be. This book also discusses what abilities and interests are best suited to each major - very helpful when deciding what path to take.

This is a wonderful resource for the "decided" as well as the "undecided" college student or prospective student. Explore your area of interest before you declare a major. The book very clearly addresses on-the-job responsibilities commonly faced by persons pursuing the field, types of jobs available and percentages of majors working in each type of job, salary information and more. It was very helpful to my daughter who knew she was interested in math and/or science but did not know what she wanted to DO. I highly recommend this resource to anyone who is considering college and/or job force change.

This handbook has not yet been updated; however, its principles are still
pertinent. The author urges us to understand and know our abilities
artistically, intellectually, spatially, in language, ability to lead,
numerical, organization skills, science, pursuasiveness and socially.
The texts shows sample earnings by knowledge acquired. i.e.
high school, college and graduate school
The difference in earnings can be significant between high school and
graduate school. i.e. well over $1MM dollars in lifetime earnings
Men tend toward business and engineering careers; whereas, women major
in education and the social sciences. Applied mathematicians are
employed by private industry circa 69%; whereas, 9% are self-employed.
Physical therapists are employed by the private sector circa 38% and
11% are self-employed.
This work would be helpful in planning a career over a long term
time horizon. It is worth the price charged for the significant value
of the information contained therein.

I found this book to be a great starter book as I begin the travel of my own towards personal growth. It's full of psychotherapy, and although I'm not an expert in that field, I found it to be very satisfying and thought provoking. I would, and have, recommend it to others.

Parts of this book are simply incredible. Peck's thoughts on the role of problems, the content of genuine love, the nature of miracles and grace are truly phenonemnal. Peck is certainly a brilliant man who brings remarkable insight to the table. While this is true, parts of this book lack cogency. For example, his thoughts on the problem of evil, original sin and the religion of science are neither convincing nor compelling. Part of the problem is that he deals with these subjects in a cursory way, not giving them the attention they demand. It is as if he quickly offers his thoughts to these age-old issues as panaceas that save the day, allowing the human race to exhale a sigh of relief. I doubt that this is how Peck intended to be read, but this is my perception of these sections. Overall, this book is worth reading for the sections when Peck shines. However, be warned that there are also parts that will fail to satisfy.

I'm not one of those people who stalk the aisles of the self help section at all. But when someone lent me this book seven years ago, it was a turning point in my life. I've since bought my own copy of all three books in the series and have found it necessary to go back and read them from time to time (especially the first and third books).
When I first started reading this book I couldn't fathom that the brand of spirituality that Peck offers was even possible. I had discarded all spirituality since childhood because I had learned early on about the hoorors of religion. More than anything, this book spurred me to start along the path to discovering my own sense of spirituality and my own life philosophy. It also helped me to think in more complex terms and beocme more comfortable with ambiguity and contradiction...reality essentially.
This book should make you uncomfortable when you read it for the first time. You have to be uncomfortable to evolve. I am grateful for having come across it at a relatively young age because my life has been better for having read it.

The Road Less Traveled is a classic that explores personal discipline, love, growth and religion. It is inward looking, insightful, sound and practical in many cases. There are some areas that are controversial, and this can detract from the material a little. But, each person must choose his or her own path...as the book points out.
Scott Peck does an excellent job of presenting this material on self-reflection, analysis and addressing personal growth in a positive manner. Although the book was released three decades ago, it remains useful today.

When I first saw this book (which was first published in 1975, not 1988), I resisted it. The title seemed gimmicky. And like a lot of young men caught up in the Peacock Revolution, I resented any attempt the restrict me.
Fortunately, I bought the book and once I let myself get into it, my sartorial life changed. And it had an inestimable effect on my business success.
The research angle was clearly a hook to sell his consulting service and the book. But if Molloy's methodology isn't rigorous enough to satisfy those who hide in academia, his conclusions are based on real-world observation, not the whim of a fashion designer or fad-obsessed magazine editor.
Yes, the photos were mediocre even then and it's a pity it hasn't been been updated to give it better production values. But Molloy has likely passed from this earth and the publisher is just mining the franchise.
For the discerning, any of the fine books by Alan Flusser of Bruce Boyer are unsurpassed.
But the average young American male doesn't need an education in fine points; he needs a primer, and this is still unexcelled.

Dressing Sharp says: "I am professional, and I am here to do business!"

I read this book some time ago, but many of the concepts are still valid. It feels good to dress up...and this book shows how!
Today, we are dressing more casual in many work situations. This might lead some to argue that dressing for success isn't applicable. I would respectfully disagree. Dressing sharp on appropriate occasions lifts the spirit, says: "I am professional, and I am here to do business!"
Malloy's book is a classic on showing how men can dress for success. For men who aren't knowledgeable on what clothing to wear professionally or socially, this book is a good starting point.

This book, taken with due care, is still the Bible for how to dress for success. There have been some contemporary changes in business dress. But if you are not a rock star or a computer whiz, don't bet your career that dressing like one will get you to the Executive Suite.
Look instead in business periodicals and you will see that almost all of the top dogs in power positions dress as though they were Malloy's models. Those who want to get there someday will dress as though they already are.
I say as a business consultant that this book has enhanced more careers than a lot of the Business Schools have done. A great deal of career success is all tied up in other's perception of you.
21 year old managers wearing pinstripe in a godawful blue/purple color with a shirt with a neck two sizes too small because they hear that pinstripe is 'powerful'. Older men wearing 'Cool Business' thinking it makes them seem more dynamic and 'with it'. Men allowing their wives or girlfriends to dress then for business. Guys wearing ties that make you wonder if their team lost or they're pledging a frat. Men wearing brown suits to a management meeting. All doomed to make their career progression a lot harder than it has to be.
Take the straight route. The tried and true. Do not fall for the lines about how 'things have changed'. If things have changed, why do the President and most Senators - where the projection of power and confidence are critical - still dress straight from 'Dress For Success'?
Your first impression and perception by others is fast - and permanent. Molloy's book is the inside lane on how to make a great impression and reflect a perception of executive capability.

What is impressive about this book is it's appeal to any age. The book follows a firefighter during his typical 24-hour shift. All information is based on realistic circumstances - from responding to a car accident, to inspecting stores/restaurants, to teaching children fire safety, to the infamous fighting of brush fires.
Artwork is detailed but easy (and fascinating) for a two-year old to view. Lots of little details are imbedded in the pictures for older children to find and learn about firefighting.
The book is slightly wordy for a two-year old, but perfect for ages 4 and up. We summarize each page for our 2-year old son.
I am excited that this book will continue to be one of his favorites as he grows.
A must for children who love Firemen/Fire Trucks!

This book stays close to reality with the help of Big Frank! Big Frank is a very likeable character for my son. I first started to read this book to him at 4 and he has loved it since.

My son, who just turned 9, loves this book. He is planning future jobs with all of the great suggestions in the book.
If I were still 12 years old this would be my favourite book!

Not all of us are entrepreneurially driven at a young age - but if you know a youngster who is - get them this book! Written in a very readable manner (for kids and adults) this book is a great down to earth mix of story telling and practical "how to" advice for kids wanting to start their own business at a young age.

Do you want to earn money, but don't know how? If so, Beyond the Lemonade Stand is the perfect book for you. This short book is by Bill Rancic, winner of The Apprentice TV show. The book is full of useful tips for "saleskids" such as: what is investing and how do you do it. There are stories about how Bill and other children made money. My favorite chapter was managing your money, because I learned new ways to save my money. One reason that I adored this book was because there are sections you can fill-in. The whole last chapter you can write down your appointments and clients.
This book won't interest everyone, only kids who like non-fiction and enjoy making money (which I love to do). I think this book is a little expensive at $15 (including shipping). I would pay about $10 total for it. However, I really don't mind the price because 100% of the profit goes to children's charities. I treasure this book and recommend it to all "saleskids".

I got this book for my little cousin and just skimming the book I could tell its a great book. I think great to teach kids about money when they are young. Its never to early. This day in age when kids are bombarded by ads telling them to buy things its great to have a book out there that teaches them how they can make their own money even when they aren't able to have a real job yet. I wish I had read something like this when I was young.

The tone of the book immediately got my attention as it begins with stories of children venturing into the business world. Each example includes a "Lessons Learned" and a "Think about This" summary. This book could easily be read aloud as the stories are quite engaging and easy for kids to relate to.
After the stories hopefully spur some interest from your child, the book discusses twenty specific business ideas (each including pros and cons plus tips to get started). I was also pleased to see a section devoted to the business model itself so kids learn some thought is involved and one can't just become rich tomorrow. The book closes with a short section on what to do with your money which gives a quick overview of spending, investing, and charity options. Parents will need to look further if they wish to teach investing to children but I was pleased the subject was at least mentioned so children are exposed to the possibility.
Since there are a few books out with business ideas for kids, I would say the uniqueness of this book is the stories. Reading stories that children can relate to and the "Lessons Learned" along with the "Think about This" summary following each will teach children by example. The examples make the book an entertaining read while educating children and hopefully motivating them to reach their own goals and dreams.

A mix of essays with varying qualities

I am one of those in a quantitative science field who might consider moving into finance. Based on the book title, the book is an obvious must-read for somebody in that situation. However, I must warn that you cannot get much out of the book unless you are somewhat familiar with the very basic terms and concepts of finance, as most essays do describe authors' endeavors in the financial field. I have absolutely no working knowledge of finance and could get nothing out of reading when financial concepts are discussed. If you can, it is recommended that you obtain a bit of basic financial knowledge from other sources before reading this one. A vast majority of essays are not written for pure finance novices; they are rather targeted toward young economics or finance majors or just those already in the field who want to reminisce with buddies.
The quality of writing varies substantially from one essay to another. On the one side of the spectrum are terse biographical sketches of how some became successful quants, merely listing their past projects. On the other side are rather philosophical proses of how "failed" PhDs in other quantitative disciples found themselves home in finance. That makes the book overall appearance of being incoherent, but it is still useful since we can read about a couple dozen different experiences.
Editing clearly lacks rigor as there are numerous typos and uncorrected grammatical mistakes - a minutia that gives rise to an impression that the book could have been much better given a proper attention and direction. However, for someone like myself in a situation similar to some authors who chose to jump ships, being able to read on their experiences is very valuable, since there is so much uncertainty. You could also form a vague picture of what a quant might do on the day-to-day basis, as well as what skills and activities in academic settings may be similar and transferable in corporate finance. Overall, this is a useful read but could have been a more pleasurable experience for myself.

This is a nice little collection that is fun, insightful, and worth the price. However, these have been collected and printed because, well....theses stories are interesting. Keep in mind that that is a narrative skew and selectivity bias. Lots of quant, risk management, and even front-office jobs are dull dull dull. Often the $$$ makes up for the dull, but there are quant grunt jobs that are thankless traps. Lots of the info from these seasoned pros will help you selsect and direct your own career path with better utility, but also keep in mind that the wild west is tamed and the pioneering days are fading with the sunset and the wall of silicon thrown at all quant problems. Sure there are mottled ducks, but even obscure probability distributions will be tamed and models made tractable. What was once woodlands with wild beasts becomes a strip mall in the suburbs, and the career of a quant is no exception.
Four stars because ...well, you always want more and this is no candidate for the Nobel prize. But very very good.

I read this book in a bookstore. It is interesting to see how people from completely different backgrounds transition into finance. For me, this book will serve as a good past time reading (I'm not in finance and I'm already too old to make this kind of transition), but it may be inspirational for newbies and students. However, this book seems to give the impression that only those who came from Ivy League/top schools are smart enough to make this kind of transition. What about those people who are not? Still, this book is a good read.

This book is a must read for all those who are entering or considering entering the world of Quantitative finance. Whilst there might be some omissions like Hull, Joshi, Rebonato, Jaeckel, Carr, Dowd , Thorp and the like (hopefully these will be featuring in the next edition), the mix between academics and practitioners is just about right. Anyone who studies the footnotes carefully and reads the seminal papers mentioned in the book will have a better appreciation of the significant contributions made by some of those featured and of the range of knowledge required to be a quant.
