I greatly enjoyed the book and have suggested it to many on my friends that are looking into entering the field of pharmaceutical sales. I thought it was extremely beneficial to read to get a flavor of what a pharmaceutical representative do on a day to day basis and how to get into the field. Read this before revising your resume and interviewing for positions it can also save you time in the end if you decide Pharm sales isn't for you.

This book will change your life

I bought this book for a friend who wanted to get into pharmaceutical sales, but she had no outside sales experience. She read the book cover to cover, referenced it daily, and in 3 months, she had her dream job. Thank you Tom!

If you are even remotely thinking of breaking into the pharmaceutical or medical sales industry - BUY THIS BOOK!! Because of this book I just got hired with Johnson & Johnson as a pharmaceutical sales rep. I had no prior experience in this industry and I beat out 3 other qualified candidates because I followed Tom's advice to a T. I highly recommend this book if you are seeking a job in the pharma or medical sales industry. It is an extremely difficult task to get hired in this industry but once you do you will be so proud of yourself and on your way to a fulfilling life-long career.

Don't waste your money - this book should be titled "Common Sense"

Review Date: 2008-07-28
I'm borrowing from Kath's review because she said exactly what I wanted to:
I picked up this book and hoped that it would give me an idea of what my first year as a nurse would be like, as the title implies. I was seriously disappointed because advice in this book was so general, it could fit almost any "first" job. It didn't have ANY solid advice for nursing.

If you are looking for a book about what your first year will be like and advice on that subject, this is NOT the book for you. Also, it's written on maybe a 9th grade level, so anyone who has been through nursing school might find that the book insults their intelligence.

The book can be summed up in one sentence: use common sense. If there's anything that a good nurse has, even a new one, is common sense.

Good referrence but not a must have.

Although this is a helpful guide, there's a likelihood that some may not find it effective enough. It's an 'okay' book. With the price being affordable, I'd like to say that it's worth the money. It could be a good reminder or refresher in the long run.

Good book but I bought it a bit too late in my first year of nursing. I was getting burnt out and looking for ways to deal with stress of work and bought this book. It helped in some ways mainly to show me it wasn't just me. But overall this was a good buy.

I was not sure if my first job as an RN was a bad fit or just me--- after reading this book, I determined it was not me!!! Resigned during orientation and am now going in a new career direction out of Med Surg into Public Health. This book was very reassuring and gave me the courage to start a new path. Helped greatly in my analysis. P.S. Listen to yourself and get this as a guide. The hospital I resigned from is now using this book in orientation.

Essential in a photographer's library

I'm only halfway through and can only ask why such a book only surfaces now. Previous concise compilations of writings on photography concentrated on the mediums origins and historical figures. This one gives us a more contemporary context (ie the 50ies) and goes on from there until today, focusing on the ideas of key figures. Thank you editors!

If a photographer might think that a picture is worth 10,000 words, why would one need a book of words about photography? Wouldn't a few well chosen photographs have obviated the need for this book? Probably not, because the aforesaid major premise is probably wrong, or at least overstated. There are some concepts that are so complex that they can't be expressed in pictures. That presumably was the thought of the editors.

In his introduction Charles Traub, who is the chair of the School of Visual Arts' department devoted to photography, says that the world of photography has changed in recent years and that the writings included in the book are designed to prepare the fine arts student to enter into the world of contemporary photography. In order to do this the authors have divided the book into four parts: "Reflections on the Medium: What It Means to Photograph; How Others See Them: Considering the Photographer; Finding an Audience: Working with the Professionals; and Guide for the Uneducated: Higher Education and Photography. Each Section contains several short essays ranging from less than a half page to 11 pages. Although the editors disavow any idea of providing photographic instruction, the piece by Henri Cartier-Bresson comes the closest to instruction. On the other hand, the piece by Dave Eggers, in which he describes the thoughts running through the mind of a young women waiting to take a gritty but artistic photograph might be interesting to a creative writing student, and while a bit of fun, does not seem to be useful to a photographer. The interview with Charlotte Cotton, a museum photography curator, seemed the most accurate and insightful description of the current photographic art market. For me the most useful piece was an outline of how to critique a photograph by Ralph Hattersley.

The Amazon star system is not useful in the evaluation of a book like this. The readings in this book are a mixed bag. I suspect that most photographers, including those earning a living from their work, will find little to benefit them here, although they may find some of the articles of interest. On the other hand, for the individual earning a Master of Fine Arts in Photography, and interested in entering into the contemporary art photography market, the essays may prove useful.

If they have not done so already, those who want to read more about photography, with an emphasis on its history as well as its philosophy might do better to read an old classic, "Photography in Print: Writings from 1816 to the Present" by Vicki Goldberg.

A book I have not yet read.

Since I purchased this book, however many months ago it was,I have yet to sit down and read through any of its essays. I did scan over a few and found that many of the authors were more interested in flexing their extensive vocabulary to convey their abstracted views of photography and the meaning of the photograph. Not really what I had in mind, though there might be some treasure buried within the pages. I don't think I'll start digging for a while.

It's not an entry level read. I was hoping that the book would contain life experiences and advice from seasoned photographers. It might, though I haven't found it. Before you buy see if you can find it at a bookstore and read some of the chapters. Then consider whether it's worth the money.

Best Pick for an introduction to the study of psychology
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-08
I teach an IB Psychology course and this is by far the best introduction to psychology text I have read and used in my course. Kalat does a fantastic job integrating current research into each major topic and even provides summaries of key studies providing their hypotheses, methods, results, and key points from their discussions. What's more, Kalat offers questions that stretch across Bloom's levels of questioning. Perhaps most importantly, my students love this book and read it with pleasure! And these are high school students!

Finally, unlike other detailed psychology texts, this text is very digestible! It is very well organized and structured. It includes clear diagrams and visuals that really help my students. Kalat's style of writing is not only enjoyable to me, but my students really enjoy it! It is very intelligent, but warm and friendly.

I HIGHLY recommend this book for any advanced psychology high school course or introduction to psychology course in college.

Kalat explains everything clearly with great pictures, charts, examples, graphs, etc. I got an A in the course and I give the book an A as well. I also highly recommend the study guide that goes along with this book, it came in very handy and is complete with practice tests for each chapter.

Get Excited About Information Marketing!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-28
I am in the Information Marketing Business. I can honestly say that the info-biz is a recession proof business - easy to start - exciting - and it allows you to make a profit (a huge profit) doing what you love to do.

Robert Skrob brought together some of the best info marketers in the country to illustrate this step-by-step guide. It is easy to read, full of great information to get you started on the right path, gives you resources and expert marketers to learn from.

What I find interesting is that many people, especially in this economy, are looking for terrific and fun ways to expand their wallets. Rarely do they even consider information marketing as a way to work from home and profit. This book will get you thinking about the possibilities from successful people just like you.

I highly recommend this Step-by-step guide for any forward thinking individuals who have a passion or specialized knowledge and is looking for a way to expand their income.

Covers a wide range of practical topics with tons of great info and tips
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-12
I enjoyed reading this book and discovered plenty of great ideas and tips. I took lots of notes throughout the book on changes I want to make and resources for further reading. There were some sections where I learned quite a bit (building a wardrobe on a few good quality pieces) and a few areas where I already knew most of the information (nutrition), but that may vary from person to person. Overall, I thought it was a good read.

A sampling of the topics include:
Nutrition
Physical Exercise
Importance of Sleep
Wardrobe essentials
Kitchen, bath, bedroom essentials
Mental Exercise
Mindfulness
A Sense of Purpose
Time for Reflection

The author consults countless experts for her information and mentions resources readers can investigate for more information. The chapters are easy-to-read with short articles on specific topics at the end like "Home Safety Tips" and "Can You Learn to Be Happy?". One of my favorite chapters is "Mindfulness and Acceptance" which covers "being present" (live in the "now", not the future or the past), "observing without judgement or criticism" and "ability to notice new things". The book does cover a very wide range of topics from a healthy body and home to a healthy mind and spirit, and the pages are just packed with useful information and tips. I would definitely recommend it to other readers.

This book is a "Life's Essential!"

If you are searching for ways to make your life more meaningful, less cluttered and deeper in spirituality and self discovery then this book will fulfill the expectations of exactly what the subtitle claims - "a guide to life's essentials". It is the most fabulous companion and guide in almost all the areas that we experience in this often perplexing journey through life. It's a book that is well written and you can read just for sheer enjoyment but also the book that you will keep close by to look things up when you are faced with mundane as well as life changing decisions. I particularly enjoyed gleaning practical advice from so many experts in such a variety of fields. The book focuses the reader in three main areas - basics for a healthy body, a healthy mind and a healthy spirit. Every chapter under those headings is filled with information and rationale of what the experts think and recommend, and often includes other websites that allow you to explore issues further. I particularly love the ideas that are shared in the healthy mind and the healthy spirit chapters.

I think we'll have to buy some more copies of this story, my son makes us read it at least 4 - 5 times a week to him. He loves firefighters (and George of course) so this is a perfect fit.

I've noticed some of the newer stories "inspired" by Margaret and H.A. Rey -- this is one of their originals / classics. Timeless and precious are words that come to mind when thinking about the actual story.

So many opportunities to learn / teach within the classic George stories -- I think because some of the pictures, things, stuff in the story are vintage and unfamiliar it encourages the child to inquire more.

We're huge fans -- and if you watch the specials, sometimes they have 4 for price of 3 on [...]

Of course, you should try to support your local bookstore whenever you can!
