All in all, I think this is a good book for those wanting to actually sell photographs, not those who want to learn how to take a good photograph. The reader shold keep that in mind. Jim covers a lot of thoughts that are necessary to get published. If that's your goal, then this book will help you greatly.
Digital - While I would have liked to see more coverage, keep in mind that this book was published in 2003 and likely written in 2002. And Jim consistenly uses medium format cameras. At that time, digital had not progressed as far for those types of cameras, primarily from a cost/benefit perspective. If Jim were more of a 35mm user, I'm sure we would have seen more coverage.
Photo information - I would have liked more information on the photo locations and how the photos came to be taken. There is explanation on many, but I wish it was provided for more of the photos in the book.
Portfolio ideas - I liked his suggestions of potential shoot locations and ideas. It really got me thinking and I've made a long list of ideas to try in 2008.

This is a great introduction to selling photography by one of the very best in the business. Jim Zuckerman is very diverse in his stock photography subject matter and that diversity shows through in the wide range of knowledge he shares in this book. The best coverage is on selling photography at art shows and advice on submitting article and calendar proposals to publishers. If you're specifically interested in stock agencies, I highly recommend Lee Frost's Photos That Sell (see my review on that book). Mr. Zuckerman's advice on stock libraries is a good introduction but Lee Frost devotes most of his book to the topic. The photography in the book is of course wonderful, but I would have liked to have seen the author share more information about which images were his best sellers, how many times each image has sold and where, and other details which Lee Frost shares in this book in many cases. However, this is very solid introduction to selling photography and I recommend it.

After taking several hundred photos on a recent trip to Mexico I decided that many of the shots were saleable. As I'd already shot my photos I now needed some information on selling them. That was the motivation for getting this title.
Zuckerman has some wonderful photos peppering this book. They are compelling and well reproduced. Put I really didn't find that it helped me understand how to sell my photos - especially as they're more geared toward the travel market. I just don't have an interest in setting up a display at an art fair, nor in making an internet site to sell my photos.
This is really more of a picture book, having more images than text. I admit I enjoy looking at the pictures, but for me it didn't take me where I wanted to go thus my 3 star rating. Mainly this book appears to be geared toward people who are much more into photography than I.

The Book of Virtues by Wm J Bennentt is a collection of fiction and non-fiction stories, each with a moral attached. Before you run back to the crime flicks and sexy, steamy fare on TV, take another look. You know how good it feels to take a cool shower on a hot day? Well .....Virtues by Bennett is a mini-bath for the soul. I like the fact that these tales are not just for children; after all, we big kids need reminders to love our neighbors,do good. do the RIGHT thing, etc. And don't let the author's rather conservative views scare you off! These stories just hold timeless truths you've known since you were little. You've just forgotten.

I am 54 years old and was raised in a way that the poetry and stories mean something to me because of the era in which I was raised. Purity was prized, discipline by spanking was administered and appreciated in time because the alternative was much worse, which created self-discipline in most things. Honesty, responsibility, compassion, courage and faith have been lost in the last twenty years with the "me" generations getting everything they want with instant gratification. The children of today are about to come crashing down hard with the realities of life without virtues. It isn't easy. Nothing is free, and Bennett has compiled a tasteful way of learning some of the lessons without experiencing them personally, which I can tell you, my generation has experienced in spades. Sure, he could have put other stories in that could have expressed it differently, but these were the stories that moved him most, and when we write our "Book of Virtues" we can add the stories that mean the most to us. Reading the "American Book of Poetry" is where it started. Keep up the reading. Keep up the digging and striving for the virtues listed in the book. America needs people of virtue, people of honesty, even people of faith, because right now, the selfish "Gen-X" generation and their children are about to get our nation blown up by the very arrogance the British had that said we know better because of who we are and what we know. Sadly, they know nothing. They have no true hardship or challenges that forge the steel in their spines. Most can't even throw a punch, because violence has been bred out of them. Well, wake up, people, the world is violent, the world is harsh and tough, and without the virtues of self-discipline, faith and courage, they won't have the perseverance to survive.

I may buy another dozen for gifts in the future.

Be your own therapist!?

Author and therapist Bill O'Hanlon has written a practical and compassionate book on how to get out of your ruts. I don't think that this book holds any threat of putting therapists out of business. His point seems to be that sometimes making small changes in behavior patterns can help unshackle people from dysfunctional behavior patterns.
Your past does not shackle you from making positive changes. Small changes can yield big payoffs.
Though it may turn off some, I also liked O'Hanlon's chapter on tapping into spirituality as a way to get untracked. He does this in a non-dogmatic way.
DOTD is a bit like chicken soup for the psyche - it won't hurt and it may help. Worth a read!!

I was able to pick out a thing or two from this book, but nothing that would really be especially helpful for more than a very brief period of time. I can see how this book might be helpful for someone who is simply stuck in a rut, but not necessarily for someone who is dealing with trauma. Depending on the situation of the reader, there are a few 'band-aid' type solutions that could provide a temporary distraction and it might also be helpful for someone who just needs, as the title states, some ideas for a bit of something different.
I've recommended it to all my friends

After reading a bunch of novels in a row, I decided it was time for a non-fiction book. I'd had this one sitting on my shelf for a few years and figured I'd give it a try. The title had always appealed to me.
It was easy reading and had quite a few helpful ideas in it. Although the author applies the concept to many areas of life, the title really says it all: If you're experiencing a problem in your life, or if there's something wrong, don't keep doing the same things over and over and expect different results. "Do one thing different" and it will lead to other changes in your life that may or may not take care of the problem. If it does, great. Problem solved. If not, do another thing different and see what happens. Often, our repetitive, unconscious actions are responsible for a great deal of the difficulties in our lives, or so goes the theory.
That's the gist the theory, though its stretched out into a book. I found it somewhat repetitive after a while, though I like the concept and plan to apply it (in fact, already have to some success) whenever I notice some area of my life that could use some fixing up.
As a concept, I give it five stars; as a book, because it is watered down and stretched out in order to justify its price, I can only give it three stars. Still, the title idea is an interesting one...one I think anyone could benefit from at one point or another in their lives.

Carolyn Elefant, the well-respected legal blogger, advocate for solo and small firm lawyers, quality energy regulatory and appellate lawyer, and experienced writer has combined all of her prodigious talents in this book that provides solo and small-firm lawyers with a highly practical guide to opening and managing a law practice. Comprehensive and based on real-world experiences, this book is different from other "how-to" manuals -- it's far more useful than others I've read. Published in 2008, it's up-to-date and incorporates present-day marketing and other concepts. The book examines everything from the initial decision to go solo to planning to the realities of practice to marketing, and also includes FAQs and resources, as well as profiles based on interviews of a number of solo and small firm lawyers, who tell of their experiences. Read this book before you make the jump into the solo life, and you'll have far fewer surprises, and be much more successful at it.

If you've ever considered entering into solo practice, Carolyn Elefant's new book Solo By Choice is a must-read. But the book is so packed with practical advice about running a law office that I'd recommend it even if you're a seasoned practitioner or not currently considering going solo.
Solo By Choice presents a practical, pragmatic and realistic view of solo practice, including reasons to become a solo and a `reality check' on whether you're cut out for solo practice. The book contains step by step advice starting with what to do in your current position before opening your own firm or how to start a solo practice directly out of law school, including essential considerations such as malpractice insurance, choosing a name for your firm, and deciding whether (and where) to look for office space. But the advice doesn't stop there.
Most law schools don't teach the business issues that are essential for any solo (or law firm manager) to master. This book explores how to choose a jurisdiction and practice area, how to create a client-centric practice and how to determine which clients or matters to keep and which to refer to others. Elefant leaves no stone unturned, tackling difficult issues like dealing with `nightmare' clients, essentials of retainer agreements and billing and fees.
In today's climate, no book on solo practice would be complete with out discussions about staffing, outsourcing and creating reliable revenue streams, particularly when starting out as a solo. Elefant addresses them all and provides marketing ideas are straightforward and achievable by lawyers on any budget. For solos facing `growing pains,' the book discusses virtual law firms, affiliations, project partnering and networks.
Throughout, Elefant reminds the reader of jurisdictional quirks, ethical considerations and client concerns that could affect the would-be solo's decisions. She includes stories from her own experience going from a law firm environment to solo practice, as well as the real-life experiences of other solo lawyers (in their own words.) Her writing is straightforward and accessible and she provides resources throughout the book for more information on each of the topics she discusses.

Coach Pat Summit's work REACH FOR THE SUMMIT, not only is one of the best sports books I have ever read, but has clear and concise steps to improve on one's life. Coach Summit's elaboration on her DEFINITE DOZEN rules for her teams have been taken to heart by this writer. Not only would thest DEFINITE DOZEN rules be applicable to a sports team of any age, but could be used by a teacher and parent as well. In fact, I have copied these DEFINTE DOZEN rules and try to practice them in all of my affairs.
Coach Summit could be considered a disciplined, and non-bending coach, yet her success as an athlete, person, and coach would be a model for anyone. This is a concise, well-written and enjoyable book to read.

YES, I GAVE IT ONLY 2 STARS! I have read alot of motivational books in my life time but this one leaves you empty. Patt Summitt does not give a "one-size fits all" approach to obtaining Life's goals as she suggest. Pat Summitt gives these long drawn out stories of her coaching experience and players experience then, at the very end, ties it to a generic principle of leadership that has been rehash by hundred of other motivational book writers. I'm not hating on her leadership or abilities. She has proven herself a dynamic coach. If you're a HS/college couch of any sport then this is the book for you! but for the rest of us her approaches to leadership do not necessarily translates to pearls of wisdom.

The book Reach for the Summit, by Pat Summit, is one of my all time favorite books. Pat shares some of her most intimate and personal struggles and she shows how she got to the top. Pat Summit is the most winningest coah is the history of the WNCAA, she even has a basketball statium named after her, The Summit.
In the book Pat describes how to make it in life and how to strive to be the best on the baketball floor and in every day struggles. The reason why I like this book so much is because I can feel comfertable taking advice from the head coah of the Tennessee Lady Vols. There are two different people in the world in my oppinion, the people who look up to Pat as a role model, and the peopl who disagree with her standards, but one thing is for certain you have to give credit to the woman who basicaly put womens college basketball on the map.

Reach for the Summit was an easy read. My goal was to read the book for its explanation of the 12 disciplines which are used for all activities in life, not just for basketball. There were more examples of the disciplins than philosophy. I am sure if one is passonate about basketball they will get more out of it than I did. Disciplines were common sense. Nothing new, but the examples were interesting enough. I thought enough of it to give it to my 14 year son to read. I believe he will get more out of it than I did, simply because of his love of sports. He will benefit from seeing the coach's side of view. Good enough to read through once.

No one basketball coach in the history of the game -- man or woman -- has won more games or been more successful than Pat Head Summitt.
And whether you happen to like her -- or not -- you just have to give this home-grown Tennessee gal her due.
Published in 1998 and written in conjunction with renowned sportswriter Sally Jenkins, this book chronicles Summitt's personal recipe for success, as described in the subtitle as "The Definitive Dozen System for Succeeding at Whatever You Do."
Today, seven years later, I seriously doubt if Summitt has altered her recipe one bit.
The Summitt system applies not only to basketball, or to coaches, but to anyone interested in reaching higher, to succeeding, or just plain winning.
I recently took a graduate level project management leadership class, which included Myers-Briggs and Kiersey personality typing. I happened to belong to the ESTJ type, as does Coach Summitt, which made her particularly interesting to me.
I am a coach myself, and a basketball fan, though not necessarily of Tennessee, which can best be described as the New York Yankees of women's college basketball. I follow the Stanford Cardinal, who enjoy a particularly healthy rivalry with the Lady Vols, and have watched Coach Summitt pace the sidelines up close and personal. A few years ago I had the pleasure of hearing her speak at a local bookstore here in California, thousands of miles from her home turf, and couldn't help but walk away impressed.
And when I'm not cursing Summitt, I'm loving her. Who can't? A master motivator, tactician and self-confessed workaholic, there's not a Fortune 500 CEO alive who couldn't learn a thing or two from her competitive spirit, winning methodology and ethical excellence.
She not only talks the talk, she walks the walk, so whatever you do don't get in her way. But if you do, when the final horn sounds, she'll be the first to shake your hand and buy the first round. She honors the game with every breath she takes.
You can easily read this book in a day, but its message will last a lifetime.
Play hard, have fun.

Barry Baker was a street cop for 20 years in a very tough town before taking promotion. He accurately reflects the central role of patrol - street work - and does not sugar-coat or avoid difficult issues. The conciseness of the book is a strength. His advice to young people is genuine and not idealistic or poorly informed. A nice job.

I found the book to be packed with invaluable advice. I've only been a cop for about 6 months now, but I wish I had read the book before I became a cop.
The book offers great advice on choosing a department. It also has inspired me to write more reports and write them better.
One of the main points I took from the book was to never sacrafice your integrity.
I didn't like how the auther put a little introductory phrase before almost every single paragraph in the book. If he didn't do that, the book would probably only be 60 pages long.

This is a great book for kindergarteners: good pictures, text that is completely on their level, not too long. The information is appropriate and makes the office of president something they will understand better.

This book is the perfect combination of fun facts and information about the office of the president. Students learn about our country at an early age, and this book is written in the right style to appeal to younger children. Easy non-fiction is the biggest trend in children's literature today, and this book is a wonderful example of it!
Finally an age appropriate book about Presidents!

I am a Kindergarten teacher and I really appreciate having books to use that give accurate information on topics I teach. This book does a super job describing the responsibilites of Presidents. We are even told that not everyone will agree with the decisions that the President makes and that the President will not always agree with congress (veto). The kids loved the part where the President's dog is in the newspaper because she had puppies. The use of children in the illustrations was appealing to my students. Preschool, Kindergarten, First Grade teachers should get this book!

As a student of Dr. Kimbro's who received this book as an award for an outstanding paper that I wrote, I have learned first hand the motivations that come from Dr. Kimbro. He is an ever-humble professor at Clark Atlanta University who is a favorite amongst the majority of the School of Business as well as other majors on campus who seek him out. Sitting in his classroom from the first day to the last keeps you glued to your seat, waiting in anticipation for him to utter his next words. He will always keep you on your toes and will never cease to amaze you or inspire you. As a man, he was sent directly from God to be put into our lives and his purpose is clear. I have never meant a man who knew of his divine purpose on earth. And as an author, I recommend his novels to any and everyone who needs a little motivation.

Mr. Kimbro has detailed the steps towards success in this book. The glass is half full in "What Makes the Great Great". Looking beyond ones circumstances and activating your subconsious mind to pursue and achieve your dreams is the foundation for what I got out of it. It makes sense, is easy to understand and has practical steps that work!

Dr. Kimbro relates stories of Black Americans for this book, but the message holds true for everyone! Just look past color and recognize that the messages here will work for all. Dr. Kimbro uses stories to support his concepts and he does a nice job of it. I got it from the library, but enjoyed it so much and wanted to reference it that I bought it! Good writing, well layed out, good message. To simplify so that you can get the main points you might want to summarize and condense the "meat". The stories are great, but the main points can really help anyone be successful if they chose. Read it!

I love books like this! This book is not only inspiring, but it gives the reader clear examples and instructions on how to achieve your own greatness.
When I first picked this up, I wasn't sure how this book would stand out among all the others I've read that are along the same lines as this. I've read numerous books by Napoleon Hill, Og Mandino, Dale Carnegie, Neville, etc. So, I was wondering if this was just another off-shoot of those, and I was wondering if my time might be better spent re-reading the classics that I mentioned above. I was pleasantly surprised when I started reading and discovered that not only is this book a reinforcement of the above mentioned favorites of mine, but the style is highly appealing to me. This is not just another 'change your thoughts, change your life' type book. This is not a book of quotes, but there are a plethora of really good statements/examples of acheivement and quotes throughout, that I believe can be extrememly beneficial. I love quotes that inspire, motivate and resonate with me. There are many, many really good things to write down and review often from this book.
I was impressed when I read the part about the author meeting with Clement Stone personally and how Mr. Kimbro accepted the project challenge even though Mr. stone decided against offering any financial inducement. -Because Mr. Stone felt it was important for Dennis to experience the very thing he was trying to convey to the audience. That made me realize that this man can truly write about this stuff. He didn't just get a bunch of books/materials together and come up with his own translation -he experienced the journey himself.
"Success in any area of life isn't something you do; rather it's something to see. Success is an understanding, not an activity." -from the book.
Great book. I hope you will read it, love it, and use it in your own life!

As this is the ninth edition of what is alledgedly the most widely used text for beginning estheticians, then the persistent use of mediocre-to-poor science is inexcusable. Doesn't the author consult *anyone* in the scientific/medical community before sending this thing off to the printers? It is *not*, for instance, an established fact that vitamin A protects human beings from cancer of any sort. There is certainly data that looks promising, but that's it. And since vitamin K is manufactured in the intestinal tract, why is paper wasted insisting that students, many of them fresh out of high school, should be memorizing the names of the food sources of this abundant nutrient? Many of these kids struggle with the science that *is* relevent to the profession they hope to enter. My husband is a doctor, I'm an RN, and neither of us has ever used the term "non-striated" muscle. It's "smooth" muscle, for crying out loud! And while I'm on the subject of muscles, absolutely none - not one - healthcare professional I'm acquainted with has ever learned anything about the "belly" of the muscle! No matter - 18 year-old kids have to learn what is not required of first-year medical students. Please. Yes, as a basic introductory text it has much to recommend it; all the more reason to get the science right. S.T., RN, Rochester, NY

Most of the chapters are well written and understandable. I have found some discrepancies in the information, and feel that the book could have been edited a little better. The book explains sanitation but does not go into the correct method of sanitizing all items that one would use during a service. The material is quite dry, and could really use something to get the student excited about the occupation that they have chosen.
