This is THE book for people who are "doing their best" job and wondering why they aren't getting promoted. The ten steps Asher spells out may seem intuitive to some, but as a career management coach, I can tell you that so many people don't get it.

I now use this book as a "travel guide" for my clients in their journey to move up or move on in their careers.

Pretty good book with some sound advice

There is no shortage of "get promoted quick" books on the "career" shelves of bookstores these days. Many of them have recommentations that should be fairly obvious to anyone with a pulse, such as "do not wear sandals to work" and so on. I did not have very high expectations when I started this book, but I found "Who Gets Promoted.." to be a refreshing exception. It is a short, but enlightening read with some pretty good advice that draws upon the author's experience in HR. I particularly found the real-life stories sprinkled in the book to be fairly insightful and interesting. Overall, a pretty good book for the new graduate and experienced cubicle-dweller alike.

Too Much Psychology, Not Enough Q&A

Review Date: 2006-04-23
I thought this book would be filled with technical questions and answers to review before a technical interview. Was I ever wrong. Out of 6 parts (and part 6 is all appendices) the first four have no interview questions. They have to do with resume writing, networking, increasing your confidence, making a great first impression etc. etc. That leaves one part for technical questions and answers. Part 5 is what I thought I was paying for and consists of one chapter totaling just over 150 pages. Here's a sample question under the job category of Database Adminstrator: "What is a trigger? What is the most complex trigger you have written?" Answer: "A trigger is a common database element and you should be prepared to discuss how you've used this element in the past- for instance, to implement business rules. Try to be as specific as you can in your examples of the types of triggers you've created." That's the whole Q&A on triggers. Definitely not enough detail for me.

Generic overview of law school

I wasn't impressed by this book at all. After my first semester in LS, everything this author suggests the law professors and 2Ls and 3Ls will tell you. I mean, it is a quick and easy read, but it's a waste of money. I bought the book after reading the 5 star recs here and I was mad at everyone who said it was worth something once I finished it. I would recommend, Law School Confidential, and Planet Law School II. Unless you have a whole bunch of extra time and money lying around, skip this book!

Review Date: 2004-12-22
I just finished my 1L semester, and my grades are starting to trickle in. So far, not so good. But I'm vowing to do better next semester, and I felt this book was very helpful in helping me see what exactly my mistakes were this semester. I bought this book a few days ago, on the recommendation of some 1Ls in my class, because unlike some of these other reviewers, my school's professors do not take the time to explain how to succeed in law school or how to study. Nor am I very friendly with any 2 or 3Ls who could provide me with this information. The reason I picked up this book is because I wanted a thorough and well-spelled out discussion of what exactly law school is all about, since I didn't do much reading on the topic before I started school in the fall. I've read other Dummies books, and felt this one was overall better organized and more thorough than those I've read in the past. I'm making up for lost time now on my winter break by learning more about how to be a better 1L, and I was very satisfied and pleased with this book. I strongly feel I'll be a better student because of it.

I recommend this book highly because I got a great overview of what I need to do better next semester in order to boost my law school GPA (which right now is hovering close to a 2.7). The chapter on "Making the Most of Your Study Time" helped me realize what really should go in an outline and what should not--after reading this chapter I realized I went about my outline all wrong--again, because no one really took the time to sit down with me and explain it all. And the chapter on "Thinking and Talking Like a Lawyer" summed up into words what I couldn't quite put my finger on about law school over the past three and a half months: what exactly the new method of thinking that you're supposed to learn in law school is all about. Up until this book helped elucidate this concept for me, I realized that I really wasn't "getting" what I was supposed to out of the Socratic Method. Now I feel a little more clued in.

This book was full of good tips, such as making me realize that in order to be competitive for summer clerkships, you need to get your cover letters in to the largest and most competitive firms by Christmastime. If it weren't for this book, I wouldn't have known that, because my career services office really doesn't do a good job of letting students know important facts like this. I also appreciated the chapter on "landing your perfect summer job" because it explained what exactly the monetary and prestige differences, among others, are between the large firms and small firms. Perhaps most of all, this book made me feel appreciated. More specifically, I liked the way this book, unlike others I've read, didn't try to sell you on the large firm as the only option for your summer job (or career.) Similarly, this book also did a great job of not trying to sell you on the idea that the law review is a make-or-break-your-legal-career move. See the "Getting Involved in Law School" chapter for reassurance that it's perfectly okay not to end up making the law review, or even wanting to, because there are other valuable EC's out there. I also learned from this chapter that it can be more important to find EC's that are a good fit for your future career plans than to just blindly assume that the law review is the end-all-be-all. That's one aspect that really annoyed me about other law school guidebooks I read--the subtle or not-so-subtle theme that you must be in the top 10% of your class, on law review, and a summer associate at a big-name firm to "make it" as a lawyer. I appreciated the fact that Greene's book didn't make these assumptions, and liked the way non-traditional uses of the J.D. were thoroughly explored (see the Considering Alternative Legal Careers chapter) unlike other books, which just gives a nod to this equally valid way of using your J.D.

As per the Dummies tradition, this book spells things out for you, and many intelligent and hard-working students, like myself, need that. My recommendation for other law students is to read this book to get a good overview of law school and to help you better find your place when you're lost. I think other law school guidebooks can also valuable, but if you're looking for a more user-friendly guide, and one that has a more liberal tone than the other much more conservative law school books I've read, then look to this book to once and for all finally understand what law school is all about and your place in it.

John Ventura gives very strong and detailed information for many legal wheelings and dealings. He covers may situations the average person might find him/herself in, and the majority of this book is outstanding. The only problem is that I try to absorb all this knowledge, but it's so detailed that you have to read it more than once to keep it in your head.

I tend to agree with "PNC2007" on that this is a very generic book on law school admissions and survival. I'm not a law school student (yet) that's why I was looking for some information. Like many For Dummies books, the book tries to be humorous and claims to give you the "insider secrets," but there's really absolutely nothing "secret" about what the author dispenses in way of advice. Want to get into a good law school? She says you need a high LSAT score, a high GPA, a good essay, and good recommendations. Duh. Don't we already know this? I mean, if you didn't already know this, you really shouldn't be even thinking about attending law school. The author spends two or three chapters letting you in on some studying tips. You know what? These ain't tips; they just tell you to "do your homework; organize your studying schedules; study hard." Duh, again. If the message is that law school is really tough, you don't need a 350-page book peppered with bogus humor to learn that.

I really don't think anyone can benefit from this book, except the genuine high-strung types or the real "dummies." Even this law-education dummy finds the book for the most part useless.

Good read, but should look into other topics...

This book was a good read. It will help calm your nerves before entering the first year of law school. Law 101 was also and excellent book. However, in retrospect, I would concentrate on learning about getting a job (resumes, interviewing, cover letters.) You will be expected start this right around finals time of your first semester. Most people were worried about their first finals and got a late start on this. It is easy to fall behind and once you are there it is difficult to catch up. Most people found that the job search was last on the priority list until after first year classes were over. You will be well ahead of the game if you are prepared for a job search. It will allow you to concentrate more on studying. While the first sumeer jobs aren't crucial they can provide good experience for landing second summer jobs. Also, reading about different law specialties is a good idea. You don't have to know what you want to do going into law school but the sooner you have a direction the better.

Review Date: 2007-05-20
Unlike the HighLights magazine hidden pictures, there are no picture clues in this book - or any other of the Highlights book series. Highlights magazine shows a panel of pictures that are to be found in the larger picture - a must until your children are at a reasonable reading level. There are only text lists of the hidden items. My two three year old granddaughters are accustomed to seeing picture clues in Highlights magazine, and cannot use these books unless someone sits with them and tells them each item they should be looking for, as they cannot yet read. Maybe a reasonable book for older children, but I have always found that once the children can read they usually lose interest in hidden picture books.

The Natural follow-up to de Bono's Five-day Course in Thinking
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-09
Edward de Bono, the foremost teacher of thinking, has put all the pieces together in this sequel to many of his other books on the subject of thinking. His main point here is that although thinking is man's greatest survival tool and his greatest asset, we tend to take it for granted and invest little time or effort in improving our minds, or our ability to think.

Here he explains that intelligent people are often haphazard and sloppy thinkers: That is, that they are not necessarily or inherently good thinkers; and that conversely, poor thinkers, and even unintelligent people can improve their thinking to a surprising degree. Intelligence, according to the author, is the skill with which one's thinking is conducted.

As always, de Bono brings his own arsenal of examples and diagrams to drive his many points home. Unlike his five-day course in thinking, which deals with "thinking in practice," this book delves into the more abstract and into the philosophy of good thinking habits, and how to achieve them. It is the perfect follow-up to the author's Five-day Course in Thinking.

My Profile: 40+ yo, sales engineer.

I write this review after lending book to a good friend. he was unsatisfied because it did not provide a theoretical frame or basis from where to construct a logical thesis. This is precisely what the book tries to avoid, a dogmatic approach to thinking... and perhaps my friend's reaction shows the difference between pragamatic philosophy and those based on "first principles"..

Chapter 4- Perception & Schemes (this refers to the spanish edition 1987 Plaza & Janez) alone is worth the price of the book and is a a principle worth hanging on a frame right in front of your desk, the problems you face in the world are mainly perception problems... and the complexities inherent in it...

This is a book to challange your "default" or habitual mode of your problem solving.. simple but not simplistic.. its the use of the tool what matter.. because it can lead you to a newer perception.

Helpful Votes: 9 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-15
If you can read this book through, the one thing that may really stick in your mind should be the large number of acronyms brought forth by the author:-

PMI (Plus, Minus, Interesting)
APC (Alternatives, Possibilities, Choices)
CAF (consider all factors)
C&S (Consequence & Sequel)
EBS (examine both sides)
ADI (Agreement, Disagreement, Irrelevance)
OPV (Other People's Views)

etc etc, all skills supposed to enhance readers' ability to think, to jump out of perceptions and patterns of thinking that the author regards as the biggest block against our creativity. Ironically, the author had reserved only 18 pages for his renowned "Laternal Thinking", that he had gone thru related methods of "Stepping Stone" (treat an idea of its movement value instead of just its judgement value), "Escape" (think of alternatives for things we take for granted) and "Random stimulation" (open ourselves to influence other than those we directly look for).

What had been written so far might seem rather a collection of jargons than an organised passage with clear objectives. However, I assure you that you will get the same bad feeling from reading the book. Perhaps the author had published so many books that it became too hard for him to write a new one with original, flesh, and practical examples and ideas at all. In that case you really want to read something from de Bono, the "Six Thinking Hats" is a much better choice.

After reading the many wonderful reviews here, I decided to get this book. Honestly, the material was disappointing. Sure, Jon Reed explains what it takes to be a good consultant, but fails to mention how.

I guess, if you're THINKING about making the leap to SAP, this book does give you a very good idea on what to expect. But if you're currently practicing SAP, forget about this book. There's nothing here that you don't already know. There was one chapter though, that did provide something new to me. SAP contracting. Jon Reed explains when to go into contracting, the pros and cons, and even analyzes (with examples) the lifes of some contractors.

Jon Reed undoubtly knows a lot about SAP. But unfortunately this book does not do him justice and does not capture the wealth of information he obviously has. I would've liked a book that explores a typical SAP project environment. How to deal with your team mates, with your clients? The best way of getting information from clients. If you're looking for this sort of information, look elsewhere as it is not here in this book. Other than that, as I said...a good introduction to someone trying to get into SAP.

This book is easy to read and has a fun style. It shows the authors' sense of humor in conveying the potentially "dry" information and with the use of colorful anecdotes.

I found the book to have timeless wisdom about what it takes to succeed as an SAP
consultant, and look at it from both the advantages and disadvantages of
independent consulting versus salaried consulting. The book includes case studies of consultants in transition and how they weighed their priorities and made effective career decisions.

Realizing that SAP information can become stale rapidly, the authors built in a "longevity resource" where readers can access a free website to get Jon Reed's latest career advice and market information.

The greatest benefit is that these guys don't seem to be consumed by their egos. I've emailed Jon with a question I had after reading the book, and he was very responsive.

I have offered advice to individuals who are being trained to teach this program and it has helped tremendously. I would recommend this handbook to anyone preparing to adapt SAP into there manufacturing enviroment. Just a note that the SAP consultants that were brought in to assist in starting this program here are making $85.00 an hour.

The examples they provide cover a wide range of situations--a variety of professional, financial, social and personal goals, a mix of ages and experiences, successes and failures.
The authors also explore topics some other books tip-toe past--tears at work, PMS, 'family comes first'--and how other women have dealt with these in their professional life. Read the book. For sure, you'll get information and insights you'll want to use in your own career.

Great advice, quick to read and digest, excellent self-help tools supported by real-life stories and vignettes. The book is well-organized, with lots of lists and examples. The index is sufficiently detailed so that topics of special interest can be easily located in the text.

A must-read for women sitting on the fence about making a career change. The authors convincingly demonstrate that if you know what you want, you can make it happen. And if you don't know what you want, they'll walk you through the process of self-assessment, goal setting and using your personal resources effectively.

Something for everyone...

What I like best about this book is it's not just the opinion of the authors. It contains the stories and advice from many different women in many different kinds of careers. If you don't have the kind of confidence the authors seem to, there are stories of people more like you - who were hesitant at first to take charge of their careers then figured out they had to and figured out the best way to do it in their situation. Maybe nobody is truly happy in their job, but if you want to get closer to it, if you want to feel like you're getting where your talent and hard work should take you, there's something in this book that can help you get there.

A renowned writer and speaker, Zig Ziglar is known for his passionate and empowering presentations - even if you're not a self-help junkie, do yourself a favor and pick up one of his audio books for the experience. 'Over the Top' is all about goal setting, performance, and motivation. As with any self-help book, there is plenty of repetition, and a few insightful examples. Personally, it helped me identify several new areas for improvement, as well as, reminded me of several habits which I have forgotten. The only word of warning: there is a heavy dose of messaging on spirituality and religion. If you're new to the self-help section, I would recommend starting with Jack Canfield's 'The Success Principles'.

Thank you Zig Ziglar

I have read Zig's books, attended his seminars and listened to his audio tapes.....I think I like this book the best of them all. His ideas are timeless and I love his positive mental attitude. Also, he is a funny guy and that comes through in the book. He is a model of success and his strategies in this book, if followed, will make you successful. Finally, this book is easy and quick to read....

I am a christian and have read the post about the person trying to make void what Zig teaches because he is a Christian. It is probably a good guess that the post was from someone that does not know God. I love Zig, his books are awesome and his insights; I am sure come from the Holy Bible and God. The truth always comes from God. I love all of the posts for this review. I even like the one from the anti-christian because in a way it shows that God can work through his willing and obedient people to teach men the best way to live. Some people want all the rewards w/o the sacrifice.

Top Class Motivational Book
