I have been using Martin Yate's "Hiring the Best" since the late 1990s. This is an excellent reference book for human resource departments, hiring managers, and, also, for those in-transition. I refer to the book when hiring key employees and I encourage those who work for me to use it for interview preparation.

Yates provides a review of situational, personality profile, stress, and behavioral interviewing approaches; knock-out questions; and over 200 questions that will be useful in assessing ability, willingness, and manageability.

Hiring capable, motivated people is considered to be the most important management task. A poor decision results in a whole host of negative outcomes including lost time, expense, poor morale, and, possibly, irreversible negative outcomes. "Hiring the Best" will serve you well when filling open positions in the private, public, or the social sector.

Basics on how to hire

Any manager with hiring authority knows that selecting the "right" candidate for any position is a nerve-wracking task. Professional processes can help you screen, interview and review, but the final choice is often as much art as science. Author Martin Yate's basic book can help inexperienced managers hire effectively, although this useful primer on interviewing and hiring is a little wordy. Yates provides great detail about key steps, such as when to schedule a phone interview, what to ask and how to conduct an interview. He even provides numerous sample questions for each major job category, from entry level to management. Is it a little too basic? Perhaps for some, but we recommend it for new managers who are inexperienced at hiring. Although this book covers the fundamentals of hiring, it can't guarantee that you'll make the right choice every time. Then again, that book probably hasn't been written.

If You Hire, This Is A MUST Read

Like many small business people, I was a complete bozo at hiring for many years. Fortunately, at some point I woke up to that fact and decided to educate myself. I took classes, read books and did everything I could to become a skilled interviewer. Without question, one of the most helpful tools to escaping Bozoland was this book. Although I am now a freelance business consultant and have no employees of my own, I frequently assist my clients with their own hiring processes, and in so doing I still refer extensively to Martin Yate's excellent book.

Although this is a fairly short book, it is very informative and it is easy to read. Most of the information in the book, I already knew about (I've done a lot of research on the band) but, If you haven't done much research yet, this is the book to read. Or if you have family members/friends that want to know more about the band, this would be a good choice for them to read. I have had the pleasure of meeting Jessie, and she knows what she is talking about! She is no nonsense and just wants to make sure everyone succeeds and that the band is the right choice for them. This is a wonderful book, and again its not complicated and anyone would be able to understand it. If you are even considering getting the Lap Band, I would read this book.

I had lap-band at Northwest Weight Loss Surgery Center where Jessi Ahroni works. She is a no-nonsense person that tells it like it is. This book is a must read for ANYONE that is deciding if Lap-Band is for them, those who have made the decision AND for their family and friends. I am one of the lucky ones that has been able to work with Jesse as well as read her book. This gives the up front approach and gives you so much information that you want and need to know. I have had HUGE success with my lap band. I was banded 5/22/07 and am down over 100 lbs at my 6 month mark. It's do-able, it's a great decision for me and this book can help you decide if it's right for you. Leigh Bergman

This book works like a charm. I went to my first interview with a fire dept. and did horrible on my interview. I placed 42 on that hire list. A friend told me about this book so I bought it. My very next interview, with a different dept, which was only a month after the first dept. I aced the interview and I am now #2 on thier list. This is a must have book.

Great book - helped me pass my oral board.

THIS BOOK WORKS/HELPS!!
Several of the questions on my interview were almost verbatim from this book. Having no previous fire service experience to draw from, this book gave me some insight into firehouse "psychology." I did very well on my interview and was hired on.
After reading this book cover to cover about 4 times in the month preceeding my interview, I feel it gave me an edge on the questions and what the interviewers were looking for.
I recommended this book to another candidate and he was hired also about a year later into our department.

Highly recommend

Good Gems

This book has some good gems in terms of dealing with the challenges of being a CEO. It comes from a place of knowledge unlike several more academic business books.

I liked this book and recently finished another book that I think is also an excellent CEO primer and tool-kit for CEOs called, "Kiss Theory Good Bye" by Bob Prosen. It was published last year and offers some very actionable takeaways in each chapter as well.

The REAL DEAL!! A Guide for becoming a "Level 5" manager
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-16
As the back cover of this book says, go ahead, read those other books by high-profile celebrity CEOs to get motivated. Then read this book to see HOW it is done. I say, skip the celebrity CEO du jour books, and go straight to this 5-star book for "Level 5" people.

This is a clear, consise, and exceptionally well proofread and published book (not one error in this book - as opposed to Moore's Crossing the Chasm - a terrible proofreading job). C. Ray Johnson cuts to the chase as to just what and how an effective CEO does and conducts him/herself, and in so doing convinces the reader quickly that anyone has the capacity to do pursue the principles of CEO logic if they really have the will and desire.

Johnson's incredibly clear early chapters lay out the effective CEO melds business understanding with personal principles. From there he goes through each aspect of key business functions and uses his CEO Logic approach for the right direction in each. His chapter on turnaround management is great.

Another very important note, this book and Jim Collins' Good to Great compliment each other. Collins makes the key point early on that companies that go from good to great are rarely run by celebrity big-ego CEOs brought in from the outside, but are instead run by generally quiet, unassuming people who are nevertheless deeply rooted in their convictions and desire to be great and have a winning team working with them. This is what Collins refers to as a "Level 5" leader.

You can think of Johnson's book as a primer on how a Level 5 leader conducts business and takes on leadership. Buy both books! You'll be glad you did. And, while you are at it, leave the self-aggrandizing celcb CEO books on the shelf ;-)

CEO Logic: How to Think and Act like a Chief Executive by C. Ray Johnson.

The reason I read this book is that I wanted to learn to be an effective chief executive officer (CEO) and how CEOs think and make decisions, as I aspire to be one in the next two to three years.
CEO Logic provides a wide perspective about the challenges of being at the top of an organisation. C. Ray Johnson provides the knowledge of how to rise to the top of an organisation; how to think like a successful CEO, how to run an organisation successfully and how to turn a faltering organisation around from a loss making company, to a profitable entity, among other interesting topics.

CEO Logic explains what drives the actions of successful CEOs. It explains how to think clearly and perceive the fundamental management issues that influence business decisions and the habits of mind needed to achieve success in business.

The book gives an exposition of the foundations of business success, development of a business philosophy that works, and the strategic application of that philosophy in an organisation. CEO Logic teaches the operating disciplines required to establish and grow a business.

What I particularly liked in the book was the information on how a CEO can effect a turnaround. Ray Johnson provides, in chapter 10 of CEO Logic, ten steps of turning an organisation around. Based on the ten steps, those responsible for changing the fortunes of a company have an excellent blue print they can rely upon.

This is a great primer for a new CEO...someone in a small company moving into the role because of being a top producer or maybe by buying in but has never had any serious management experience. It is an easy read, and because of that, doesn't have a lot of depth. However, if the new CEO has what it takes to grow into the job, this book should spark an interest to acquire more knowledge.

Understand What is Important to the CEO and Your Career
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-31
A lot of times when a person starts out at an entry level job, he sees only his direct working environment but sometimes doesn't understand why certain departments or people have priorities over others. CEO Logic is a great reference for those who want to understand what goes on or should go on in the CEO's mind.

I highly recommend it to a new or young CEO to understand what their priorities should be and how to handle them accordingly. Some of the questions answered:

Why is it so imiportant to have and operate a company by a set of principles?

Why is it so important to have an open dialogue with workers and staff in a non-threatening environment?

Why is cash flow so important?

These and many other questions are posed to provoke the reader to think and most of the answers are used in real life examples of CEOs who have either made the mistake and corrected it or those who belong to the business obituaries page. The book is broken down into 4 parts with 19 Chapters:

Part 1: The Foundation
Ch1: Thinking Like a CEO
Ch2: Planning Strategy and Making Decisions
Part 2: Manageing Organizations and Execution Discipline
Ch3: Business Operations Plannning: Define the Risks Worth Taking
Ch4: People Management: Never Try to Teach a Pig to Think
Ch5: Career Management: Control Your Own Desitny
Ch6: Sales: Keep it Simple and Understand it Completely
Ch7: Numbers: Don't be Fooled by the "Accounting"
Part3: Cash, Crisis and Opportunity
Ch8: Banking: Master Their Rules
Ch9: Cash Management: Keep the Lifeblood Flowing
Ch10: Tough Times and Turnarounds: Match the Cure to the Illness
Ch11: Acquisitions: Don't Bujy it if You Can't Improve it
Part4: Character, Ethics, Communication and Wisdom
Ch12: Leadership: Nothing Mystical, Nothing Magical
Ch13: Secrets: Wit and Wisdom from the Trenches
Ch14: Final Thoughts: Simple Truths from Great Compelexities

The book is great. If you want to get in the to industry (that's what people call the film industry in Southern California), buy the book. It gives a complete break down of all the people that are required to make any movie. So next time when you watch the ending credits, you'll know what a key grip, best boy, art director, first assistance director does and be able to tell your friends as they walk out of the theater asking, "What's a best boy?"

But it today!

Perfect Introductory Book to Hollywood

Review Date: 2007-05-16
I purchased a number of "get into film/hollywood" books and this one was by far the most helpful. While it doesn't have much of the typical career advice (how to write your resume, cover letters etc.), which are better covered in more general job hunting books, it is the perfect book to read to get a sense for the jobs that do exist in Hollywood. If you're interested in the industry, but find it something of a "black box" or are unsure exactly what type of position to try and look for, this book is the ideal starting point. Levy walks through the entire industry, from agencies to studios, to actors, directors, costume designers etc. Given the wide canvas, none of the positions are covered in too much detail, but I think the book ideally serves as an excellent starting point from which to know where to pursue more information.

Finally, the tone of the book is excellent - one of excitement and encouragement. While it's a small point, dry and depressing hollywood career books abound - it's refreshing to find one that's has an enthusiasm and optimism to match your own.

A Great Book to get started

I am an entertainment buff and I thought this book was great for people who want a survey of jobs they can pursue. It gave an in depth look at a lot of the positions in the film business. If you want a general look at the possible jobs, get this book. If you are more interested in television, this book is a great start, but it doesn't say anything about that since its primarly about film so look for another book for further reading. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to break into the business, it was really helpful for me.

I had many interviews before reading this book, but no offers. After reading this book and learning how to answer interview questions in a concise, yet detailed manner, I got my first job offer which I accepted. I was also offered another position. So maybe it was just the right timing and the right job for me to have when it was offered, but I believe this book did help me to interview better.

It's hard to review this type of book, so I'd like to tell what happened when I used this book.

I applied online for my dream job. Thanks to my resume I was selected to be interviewed by phone. But thanks to this book I was then selected to be flown me over for an series of in-person interviews.

It was because of this book that I nailed the interviews and was offered the job on the spot after my last interview, something extremely uncommon in my industry.

This book is such a quick an easy read. In fact, she gives away the technique at the beginning of the book. The rest of the book explains how to tweak the technique. Sure, like someone else said, some of the prepared answers to typical interview questions are too cheesy or not realistic, but at least they give you something to use as the foundation for YOUR answers for those questions.

I then used some of her salary negotiation techniques to sucesfully increase the salary amount that they originally offered.

I am now living where I've wanted to live for years, doing a job I enjoy and making over $12k more than at my previous job. This book should cost at least 10 times as much.

As an Executive Recruiter, I coach people everyday on how to interview. Without the proper preparation the candidate will fail to move forward in the interview process the majority of the time. 60 Seconds and your Hired is a simple read; however, it is one of the most powerful books of its kind on the market.

If you really read this book, and take the advice given, you will ace your next job interview, no doubt about it!

I have since finished reading the book and am looking for the next opportunity.

Life in Academia - there are some things that simply won't be taught in a class room. "What They Didn't Teach You in Graduate School: 199 Helpful Hints for success in Your Academic Career" is a guide and heartfelt attempt to teach young educators and faculty what they weren't taught in their graduate school classes. With a humorous tint, it's as entertaining as it is informative, broken down into fifteen manageable chapters complete with appendixes. "What They Didn't Teach You in Graduate School: 199 Helpful Hints for success in Your Academic Career" is a top pick for any new educator, and a dual pick for education and jobs/career collections.

This is a nice addition to the genre of guides for new and future academics. The 199 tips are pithy and insightful. The topics range from job hunting, tenure, writing, and diversity on campus. There is even a short appendix on writing the dissertation. I think the advice is geared more towards academics going to research-intensive universities, but probably has a lot to offer academics in teaching institutions as well. I believe it will appeal to a range of fields.

You can't expect much meat from a help book under 150 pages, but the advice is wide-ranging, so I think most graduate students or new faculty would find many new tips and ideas in this book. It is certainly an easy read and worth looking through. For someone without a lot of exposure to the day-to-day life of a professor, it would be very valuable.

Every time I've used this book I increased my base at least by 20%, plus bonus increase and variety of perks. I agree with one "negative" reviewer that this book can be reduced to, in my view, 3 pages. However to each these three pages will be "his/her own". It worked for me so well that I recommend it to all my friends along with Richard Betty's 5 Minute Interview. these two books is all a person need to increase chances of getting a job and compensation to a max.

I have read 4-5 books on this topic -- this is by far the best. The others are too lengthy, more for academia or career-services professionals. But this one carries the nuts & bolts, along with the clear step-by-step methods & best advice that the other books gloss over or ignore.

With this book, I have coached several colleagues & myself -- one of them got a salary offer $10,000 ABOVE what the company was initially offering. Another negotiated a sign-on bonus that was originally non-existent. When I first read it (in '99), I gave my closest friends copies of it for Christmas! How's that for an endorsement?

Before you eagerly take the advice of this "full proof" method to make $1000 a minute, take the advice with a few grains of salt. The most competitive positions at the top companies (ie. Finance) will not be happy when you employ the tactic of trying to fudge your salary, especially if you do not have experience in the industry. Most likely, the competition for these positions is so fierce that anyone demanding over their typically preset ceiling will be shown the door and another eager and qualified candidate who is more forthright about salary to be offered the position. Be careful of completely losing your chances when you keep your salary range from the employer. What the author doesn't tell you is the risk of the person across the desk showing you the door when they sense that you are not in their price range. Speaking from experience and having read the book, this is a real possibility. This book can cost you a lot more than $1000, out of your own potential income.

I sent this to my son in a federal prison in Arkansas & he couldn't use it because it was written by an African-American & the inmates would have tormented him. Sorry. Thought it would have been wonderful. He donated it to the library along with the "Life Without Limits"

I enjoyed reading the book. T.D. Jakes however did not
give any information that has not already written by other authors in a better format.

not as good as I had expected. Have read other authors in this kind of theory and they were much better. I was disapointed. I mostly love his books.

I really enjoyed the power of this book. When I first started reading it, I thought I was listening to Dr. Phil. I did not enjoy that part ( role playing) in the beginning. Then I sat back and thought about how we are different in situations. Everyone attacks there alter ego by using either strength or weakness. But when we reposition ourself, we remain stable, strong, directioned and empowered. I gave the book to my son, so he could enjoy it.
