I THINK I WANT TO BE A FASHION DESIGNER IS A GREAT BOOK TO READ SO THAT I CAN LEARN MORE ABOUT DESIGNING. I CANT WAIT TO READ IT AGAIN. I LEARNED TO NEVER GIVE UP ON AN IDEA. YOU WILL NEVER KNOW IF YOU WILL MAKE IT OR NOT IF YOU DON'T TRY. I LEARNED MANNEQUINS ARE FOR CLOTHING THAT I DESIGN. IF THERE IS A MISTAKE ON THE DRESS, IT IS A PRACTICE DRESS. IF I MAKE IT RIGHT THE NEXT TIME, IT IS A DRESS THAT I WILL BE ABLE TO DESIGN FOR MANY MANY TIMES.

Really nice book!

This is a really nice book. Lots of glossy color photos of star designers add to the enjoyment of reading this book. It's great for little or big girls interested in fashion. I especially liked the story of the little girl who made up a new kind of mitten. She's been very successful with her efforts. It shows that not everyone has to go to design school to be a success in the field.

I bought this for my niece, but read it first. This book covers a lot of material and is written for pre-teens and teens. The people it lists as current designers is out-dated, but other than that, it is a good resource.

This is a nice book with good coverage of design topics. We are using it in cahoots with a class at eclasses.org. I give it a 4 not 5 stars because it lacks the descriptiveness to really teach a new designer how to appreciate what we are looking at, just sort of talks to you in a language that designers understand.

Needs better editing and layout

I am using this book for a design class I'm taking in an effort to improve my seemingly hopeless eye for anything creative. This could be a great book. It includes a lot of interesting information and projects to reinforce the concepts introduced in each chapter.

Unfortunately it is also rife with typographical, spelling, and grammatical errors, which distract me as I'm reading (e.g., inconsistent capitalization of list items, incorrect hyphenation, multiple verb tenses in a single phrase, and just plain misspellings or incorrect words). There are also multiple layout inconsistencies and mistakes (missing line feeds before new paragraphs and extra spaces in sentences). Finally, at least once there is what appears to be an editorial comment that was never removed from a paragraph. See p. 97, 1st paragraph (2nd edition) (Also note what is probably a missing space between the two sentences.):

"Nothing seems as boring and can alienate a reader more quickly than a page of statistics. That is where charts can help (seems to add emphasis to leave as two sentences)."

If you are the type of person who is driven crazy by grammar errors and the like, you might want to look elsewhere. That said, I am one of those people, but since I'm stuck with the book for my class, I'm pushing through it, and when I can make myself look past all the mistakes, I find I learn a lot.

This is an excellent book for those who want to understand what makes up a good design. You get to learn the language of designers and what elements work well together. This information was originally presented in 1949 and has been updated to include digital design in the second edition.

This book has been a favorite of mine for several reasons. The basic principles and elements of design are very clearly defined and well illustrated. The book is concise though and does not give a lot of useless "fluff". The chapters include projects to do which help to cement in the information covered. As a beginning designer, I don't regret this purchase.

If you want to become a graphic or web designer, then you've got to know more than just the software. You also have to be familiar with the fundamental principles of design. This book is an excellent way to accomplish that. Well written and copiously illustrated, it guides the beginning designer through classic artistic basics such as hierarchy, balance, and unity of composition, then moves on to color theory, typography and other vital subjects. It is easy to understand but is by no means "dumbed down." This book was the text for an online course I took in design basics and I found it enormously helpful. You will too.

Was an interesting read, a little heavy on personal political views on the way the German soldier was slighted after the war. Not once was there any mention of wrongdoing by any German soldier or the validity of the war. I got the point of the hardships the front line soldiers endured, but the constant references to post Germany not appreciating their sacrifices were somewhat distracting. Definately had a lot of interesting insight on tank tactics and supply problems. It opened my eyes that Tigers were fairly vulnarable if not used correctly. The author vividly describes his methods of preparation and execution in battle. This allows the reader to understand the need for good leadership and the consequences when leadership is lacking. Overall I found the book insightful and would recommend to anyone who is interested in learning about a weapon that carries a certain respect in WWII history. T.Parfitt

Interesting, but not my Favorite WWII Memoir

Review Date: 2008-06-30
I found the memoir "Tigers in the Mud" interesting, but not the best or not the most exciting of the WWII memoirs I have read. I am an avid WWII reader, but not a military historian, so perhaps this book was not intended for me.

For one, much of the book depends on the reader's understanding of the battles and combat situations. I am familiar with some of the major East Front battles, but I think this book would have benefited more from some summaries of the situations before launching into the details. For example, perhaps some more details prefacing "Gatschina had to be given up" would have helped to understand why the Panzer leaders were in the situation they were in. A few more maps might have helped the reader understand the situations.

Secondly, the translation is a bit stilted, and full of German idioms that do not survive literal translation. I see many passages that appear lifeless. "Not a single creature was to be seen in these dead woods." I was also tired of seeing the many quoted expressions. "My 'hungry' and 'freezing' men sat at a table as if in peace-time." Was it really needed to quote hungry and freezing? Either they were or they were not. Even the word Tiger is quoted throughout the book.

I also expected a bit more on the details of the Tiger tanks, or even his earlier experiences with the 38ts. These details are somewhat limited.

In the end, I enjoyed the book for the details and the matters-of-fact that were mentioned, but I expected a bit more of a framework or a lively drama in which the details are given.

Great Book!

"Tigers in the Mud" I found to be very captivating and I couldn't put it down. I wish someone would make this into a authentic movie, the perils and trials Otto Carius went through was very interesting.

Fresh perspective

Review Date: 2008-05-11
I have just finished reading this very interesting book which was written from the perspective of a highly decorated panzer commander. How refreshing to read a viewpoint from a WW2 German frontline soldier. He tells his story without embellishment, there is no hollywood exaggeration here. Playing down the danger & terror which was part of the Russian front, he calmly relates details of battles he took part in, comparing the pros & cons of both the German & Russian tactics. Until the Tiger tank made an appearance at the front, the Germans had no answer to the Russian T34s & KV1s.
It was quite clear that he respected the fighting abilities of the Russians while he was less than impressed with the Americans who relied on technology rather than properly trained personnel. And for those that had the impression that the Americans were the good guys, think again. Carius confirms that the Americans instigated a harsh post war policy of starvation & neglect on German POWs.
I used to wonder how the Germans & their allies managed to fight on multiple fronts against the world's most powerful nations and hang on for as long as they did. The answer I think is to be found in this book, far from being an exception, men like Otto Carius were quite numerous in the German army. These were men who did not shirk responsibility, but did their duty competently both in attack and defence, who were resilient, tough & stoic under all conditions. Their principle motivation came from a strong sense of duty & loyalty to their families, homeland & comrades, qualities which are these days played down and even discouraged.
The book also gives an insight to the real Heinrich Himmler who listened attentively to Carius's honest assessment of the worsening frontline situation.
If you want mindless entertainment then watch Hollywood inspired movies & documentaries, if you want the truth then read books written by people who were there, on the frontline, people who survived numerous battles and lived to tell the tale.
All I can say is that I enjoyed this book enormously, and the one criticism I can make is that it was not long enough.

Another very good WWII book

Otto Carius tells of his days as a Panzer Commander. He starts his military career driving the Czeck made Pz 38 with a 37mm gun and bad armor and ends his days driving the excellent Tiger tanks. I knew the Tigers were a good tank that needed to be constantly fixed by their crews. However, Otto basically says the ex-Czeck tanks are junk with weak armor and this cost him some savage wounds early in the war.

Otto is both a great writer but delivers a little disjounted story. That should have knocked it down to 3.5 stars (C+ grade) but the machine does not allow it. Example, we go from Otto being an enlisted man on the Pz 38 and "poof" he is an officer. We don't learn a thing about his OBC or anything like that. Now, Germans tended to view their training as secondary to the action. It's like a pro-football player talking about training camp versus the big game. However, training is how a military prepares for a fight and it's always nice to know how the German army did this.

Otto gives day to day living while fighting against the Soviets. First, they lose quite a few soldiers due to slipping and then being crushed by the tracks. Second, the Germans designed the best tank hatch for the commanders in the Panzer III. The first Tiger hatches were too high and made a good target for Soviet PAKs. Otto is quite happy when the Tigers are all retrofitted with improved hatches.

Now, Otto also tells a reader something this reviewer has long suspected; he was not a great tank hunter by design. He was just out in the field so much that he just saw a lot of Soviet tanks. Now, Otto killed more than 130 tanks in his career. But when you break it down to 1941 to 1945 it's not a tank a week. Otto is quite clear about the fact that if you want to get tanks then you must be in the field. Indeed, his company commander is quite upset that he never gets a tank but Otto's platoon and personal tank constantly get kills. It's like deer hunting; if you don't spend time in the field you're not going to see a deer.

Otto was one of the personal reasons why the Soviets didn't break the seige of Leningrad for nearly 30 months. Any time there was an attack you could pretty much count on Otto and either a platoon or company of Tigers to break the back of a Soviet attack.

Strangely, Otto knocks out his share of the excellent Stalin tanks, one of the best tanks of WWII. His gunner always knew the weak spot on the Soviet tanks.

Now, after the war Otto spends time in a Soviet prison. That tale is both brutal and fast.

I liked this story. Otto gives background on the German WWII tanks. In the back of the book you get to see the many awards this excellent soldier received in WWII. Boy, I wish we had soldiers like him on our side.

3.5 stars and a darn fun read.

The Not So Well Club!

Will the 5 boys get rich by selling a fake U.F.O picture or will they not get rich by
selling the picture!

The Get Rich Quick Club is about 5 boys find an idea of a fake UFO picture and they plan to sell it to get money. The boys don't make it, but they all have fun. One of the kids tells the people that the picture is fake. What will happen next?

I think the author's purpose is to tell kids to be truthful and to entertain kids.

My favorite part of the book is when the boys start the get rich quick club because the boys all try to think of funny ideas to get rich. For example, they tried to create a fake UFO picture using house supplies. The picture kind of worked...they didn't get rich, but they got famous.

I recommend this book because it is funny. It also shows kids how they can make money.

If you are pursuing a better life at home or in business, this book is absolutely invaluable. I loved it for it's clear and concise message about what the world-class do that differentiates them, and the results they get, from the rest. It is also great to be able to open the book anywhere and get clear and profound methodology into the workings of world-class performers, without having to read the book from the beginning.
And the author is very magnanimous in providing countless referrals to other books, CD's and even movies that help the reader get further understanding and systems on how and why the elite perform better in the world.
An easy read, and very motivational, this book has changed my whole life, and my business.

Attention all coaches or potential coaches, please read this book. Lets face it, Pat Summit is one of the greatest coaches of our times, like her or not. As a parent of 5 children who have been involved in various sports I felt it was a very interesting and informative book. I think it should be required reading for all coaches, new and old. You will learn something from it if you read it with an open mind. I hope she writes again in the near future.

Coach Pat Summit's work REACH FOR THE SUMMIT, not only is one of the best sports books I have ever read, but has clear and concise steps to improve on one's life. Coach Summit's elaboration on her DEFINITE DOZEN rules for her teams have been taken to heart by this writer. Not only would thest DEFINITE DOZEN rules be applicable to a sports team of any age, but could be used by a teacher and parent as well. In fact, I have copied these DEFINTE DOZEN rules and try to practice them in all of my affairs.
Coach Summit could be considered a disciplined, and non-bending coach, yet her success as an athlete, person, and coach would be a model for anyone. This is a concise, well-written and enjoyable book to read.

The book Reach for the Summit, by Pat Summit, is one of my all time favorite books. Pat shares some of her most intimate and personal struggles and she shows how she got to the top. Pat Summit is the most winningest coah is the history of the WNCAA, she even has a basketball statium named after her, The Summit.

In the book Pat describes how to make it in life and how to strive to be the best on the baketball floor and in every day struggles. The reason why I like this book so much is because I can feel comfertable taking advice from the head coah of the Tennessee Lady Vols. There are two different people in the world in my oppinion, the people who look up to Pat as a role model, and the peopl who disagree with her standards, but one thing is for certain you have to give credit to the woman who basicaly put womens college basketball on the map.

YES, I GAVE IT ONLY 2 STARS! I have read alot of motivational books in my life time but this one leaves you empty. Patt Summitt does not give a "one-size fits all" approach to obtaining Life's goals as she suggest. Pat Summitt gives these long drawn out stories of her coaching experience and players experience then, at the very end, ties it to a generic principle of leadership that has been rehash by hundred of other motivational book writers. I'm not hating on her leadership or abilities. She has proven herself a dynamic coach. If you're a HS/college couch of any sport then this is the book for you! but for the rest of us her approaches to leadership do not necessarily translates to pearls of wisdom.

Good enough to read once.

Reach for the Summit was an easy read. My goal was to read the book for its explanation of the 12 disciplines which are used for all activities in life, not just for basketball. There were more examples of the disciplins than philosophy. I am sure if one is passonate about basketball they will get more out of it than I did. Disciplines were common sense. Nothing new, but the examples were interesting enough. I thought enough of it to give it to my 14 year son to read. I believe he will get more out of it than I did, simply because of his love of sports. He will benefit from seeing the coach's side of view. Good enough to read through once.

Career development expert Ron Fry focuses on how to prepare for a job interview and how to conduct yourself during the interview. While he covers some of the same ground he's covered in some of his other books and as well as the territory in other career books, such as What Color Is Your Parachute, Fry focuses helpfully on a critical job-finding skill - asking the right questions during your job interview. He tells you how to respond when the interviewer asks you, "Do you have any questions?", because your response indicates your level of interest in the job. Besides listing questions to ask or to modify to meet your own circumstances, Fry provides helpful preparatory questions you should ask yourself to clarify what kind of job you really want. We recommend this book to job seekers at the middle or lower management level. By the time you get to the executive suite, you'll know what else to ask.

This book does a great job of helping you ask the questions that will get you a job. As a training manager, who trains managers and executives on how to interview, I feel I am qualified to say this book works.

I know we look for people who can ask the right question. This book is a wonderful resource once you get the interview. This leaves us with the question, "How do you get an interview?" Simple, know the type of job you want and pursue it, if you do not know what type of job you want you may want to read the classic, "How to find your dream job and make it a reality." By Jason McClure.

Read this book, and learn how to ask questions for your job interview.

This is an excellent book, and provides an easy to read format with questions listed in bold throughout the book. There is no "quick reference" sheet of questions, though there is an appendix which lists questions in the back of the book (on p. 169).

The author seems to be from a sales background, and lists many questions more suitable for sales. In particular, some of the questions seem to be quite bold and forward; you may want to skip some of these. To his credit, these questions are clearly marked.

The book breaks questions down into three general areas: questions to ask yourself (before the interview), questions to ask a prescreener (an HR person), and questions to ask the hiring manager. Most of the book is spent on the latter two.

This book also describes how to do research on a company - so you know what questions to ask. Resources are described in detail, and how to get them.

My boss was right. The book is great. It has some good stories and really makes you think about re-evaluating your goals in life and aiming a little higher.

This book is inspirational. The only thing that would improve it would be if he read it himself. I highly recommend for anyone remotely intersted in doing anything that they are currently not doing, but want to. It is a powerful motivational tool.

Also, it has many interesting stories about the Don's personal life which are always fun.

Great audio book. It gives you insight on how to think differently about your business dealings. It also gives guidance on how to get from where you are to where you want to be, all by thinking big. I listen to parts of it before important meetings or interviews to get into the "think big" mindset. I definitely recommend this book.

The book is motivational. I'm not sure if Trump is a geneous or a psychopath but at the very least the book makes you think, pumps you up and is interesting to hear Trumps' view on things.

My 19 month old son LOVES cars. We checked this book out from the library and it is definitely my son's favorite book. I put it on my Amazon wish list, so hopefully someone will buy it for us. We've renewed the one we have 3 times now! :) The book has a lot of simple pictures of cars, simple words, and even a bus. My son gets very excited about the last page which has cars, a bus, and an airplane. My Car is a bedtime story request almost every night.

Great first car book!

My son received this as a gift when he was about 18 months old and absolutely loves it! It is a regular favorite... he loves the graphics and simple story line. He is almost two and loves to recite some of the lines and point out things in the nice, colorful yet simple pictures. Great book for boys!

This is a great book if your child is obsessed with cars as ours is. It explains all the car parts, and is very colorful. It's a cute little book. Very general.

My 17 month old son loves having this book read to him and pretending to read it. He already loves cars, so the subject is great. It has bright colors, the pages aren't too busy, and the words are simple. Great book. We have the trucks book too. We also have the trains book, which he got for a gift and is also great.
