Ms. Feldon's book on living alone is based on her own experiences and reflects what she has learned through living alone and the advice she has been given and which she would give to a friend in the same circumstances. What she has to say can be a good starting point for coming to terms with the single life, especially for people who rather suddenly find themselves without a companion.
Not every word of this book will be of help to every single person who reads it. What Feldon does when trying to cope with loneliness and depression is not readily available to everyone, things like flying to the south of France or gathering one's friends around. However, the essence of the ideas is there for anyone to mold to their own purpose and purse strings.
Overall, one of Feldon's most important contributions is spreading the knowledge that there are other singles out there. Singleness is not a recognized condition in the world around us, except for the young set, many of whom have not yet married. Recognition of the aging of our population, although studied and reported, has not yet had an effect on marketing, access to social events, etc. With books like this, perhaps we will at last be counted.

found the book more interesting to read as a biography of barbara feldon's life than as a self help get over the break up type of manual...there really isn't anything in the book that your friends won't tell you anyway! still - i'm glad i'm reading it.

I just started reading this book last night, then I started skimming it, and then I stopped reading it. This book seems to be written for and by a very wealthy and very bored person. Ms. Feldon seems to lack any real insight into the lives and circumstances of her readers, but instead appears to have used a thesaurus to translate her simple thoughts into what she calls a "guide".

It was difficult to get into reading this book, since I had just finished reading "Single: The Art of Being Satisfied, Fulfilled, and Independent" by Judy Ford (which I highly recommend over this book). In my opinion, "Living Alone and Loving It" reads more like the author's autobiography of singleness than it does as a guide to actually "loving it". It's not as matter-of-fact and loveable as "Single" was. Barbara Feldon tends to get over-wordy where it isn't necessary, as if she was trying to write the great American novel when she wrote this. It is nice to read her book and know that you're not alone in your singleness, but this book was almost down-right boring.

I am so grateful for this book and to Barbara Feldon to write it for us.
It prepared me for the holidays and how to plan for them so I could get through them. I am thankful that she helped me avoid pitfalls during vacations. And her clear and simple direction about designing my financial independence put me on the right track. Her wonderful hints how to have nice highlights with people with whom we interact all the time is making my daily life filled with kindness and friendly smiles. I still refer to her book all the time when I need to remind myself to be kind to myself and when the solo life gets rough sometimes. It is a must-have!

The Dale Carnegie audiobooks by Nightingale Conant tend to be too basic and common sensical, trying to repackage the" Win Friends Influence People", "Stop Worry Start Living", or "Public Speaking" principles in new bottles for the New Economy Age. Good endeavors, but tend to fail to provide the wow, useful new ideas.
Bought "5 Essential People Skills", "Make Yourself Unforgettable", "Stand and Deliver", "Sales Advantage", "Dale Carnegie Leadership Mastery" and "Leader In You". All of them are newly recycled, repackaged, old ideas of Dale Carnegie's "Win Friends Influence People", "Stop Worry Start Living", or "Public Speaking". They are not as informative as other great audiobooks in the market like "Crucial Conversation", "Difficult Conversation", and "Articulate Executive" by which have more twists and new things to say about leadership communication and persuasive communication. If you need to buy audio books of Dale Carnegie, just buy Dale Carnegie's original, unabridged "Win Friends Influence People", "Stop Worry Start Living" audiobooks. Old too, but relatively more meat and better organized. Besides, you can get them from audible.com easily.
Dale Carnegie & Associates really needs to hire more gurus or outside consultants to help update and upgrade their outdated content (not the principles!). When I showed those Dale Carnegie timeless principles to my 12 years old, he said they are too elementary and common sensical in the internet 2.0 Age. Like KFC, Dale Carnegie is an aging brand that needs rebranding and remarketing to stay relevant and practical to the readers or audience.

The Dale Carnegie Leadership Mastery Course has only a little bit of Dale Carnegie's writings in it. It is mostly material that was written much more recently. The newer material is consistent with Dale Carnegie's thinking and modernized to use examples from the 1980s and 1990s, but the writing lacks the punch of Dale Carnegie's original books.
There are some readings from Dale Carnegie interspersed with the newer text, but they are short and don't seem to fit in very well. Most of the Dale Carnegie excerpts are from How to Win Friends and Influence People.
If you want to be inspired by Dale Carnegie, buy the audio book version of How to Win Friends and Influence People instead. It is a classic.

This is not Dale Carnegie but just some amateurs trying to make some money out of the good name of Dale Carnegie. I think they are called Dale Carnegie Associates. lol.
I've listened to it twice through and know there is virtually nothing which will be of any use to anybody.
What it does, is take one of Dale Carnegie's principles, explain it in about 5% of the detail Dale Carnegie did, try to give a contemporary example and finish by going,
"You'll now be on the way to leadership mastery"
Its one for the bin.
There is this guy with a lisp reading part of it who is so fake getting enthusiastic over "filler" drivvle.

If you saw the recent piece on 60 Minutes, you know that millenials are different. They have their own ideas of how they expect to be treated at work and if they are not, they up and leave and go to another company that will meet their demands. So what, you say? Well, watch out because a labor shortage is fast approaching and you are going to have to figure out how to motivate and retain millenials if you want to stay ahead of the business curve.
Millenials Incorporated is a great resource book that will quickly give executives and HR managers all the right pointers to not only motivate and retain millenials, but also to maximize the employer-employer relationship.
Author Lisa Orrell is providing on-site seminars and workshops to large corporations all over the country that realize this is a must-learn (and quickly) subject. You can have access to all of her tips and tricks and deep expertise at a fraction of the cost by reading this fascinating and helpful book.

Business is a morally serious calling and Novak proves it.

Novak uses antidotial evidence to show how business can be
and often is a virtous enterprise. However his feelings
about free market capitalism and the business community
are somewhat navie and idealistic. Antidotes are used to
support the fact (often forgetten by social critics) that
business leaders contribute a great deal to society. I
believe this is a good book to read if you are taking a
college course in Economic philosophy or business
administration.

The view going in is very different than the view coming out. Novak's idealism helped to encourage me in my own. I read this book as an undergraduate business student struggling to find the balance that I saw in between greed and good. I so enjoyed his language, examples, and message that I recommended it to my Business Ethics professor. Last I heard, he was planning on using it as one of the textbooks. I gave it a 4 star rating because although it was a good read, it could always be better. Let's leave some room for improvement.

This book was reccomended by a friend and I was fascinated by the title. The book is a quick read with many references to socio-economic theory and the Catholic way. The book was written by Mr. Novak, a distinguished author who grasps both the economic and theological apsects of modern day business activities. He does a good job of portraying work as a means to help the common good of all society. The idea that being productive as a person in business can benefit others in unseen ways is worthy. Even business can work in its' self interest while helping advance society. Business as a calling tied together many aspects of faith, work and finding meaning in a career. This book should be on the must read list of every young MBA or CEO.
Bad defense of free-market

I'm writing this review to balance the far-too-positive ones above. I was forced to read this book for a college course. The book is simply not well-written nor is it a convincing defence of the free-market system.
An example of the incompetent writing: "A fourth truth about callings is also apparent: They are not usually easy to discover" (p35) You are not supposed to contradict your own sentence. This is an example of confusing, bad writing.
In much of the book, the author just repeats self-serving corporate public relations boilerplate, up to the point of unwitting self-parody. On page 22 he praises another saint of capitalism: "Kenneth Lay, chairman of. . . Enron. "I grew up the son of a Baptist minister. From this background I was fully exposed to not only legal behavior but moral and ethical. . . the most satisfying thing[] in life is to create a highly moral and ethical environment. . . ."
The worst thing is that the book contains nothing new. There is not a single new idea proposed that I saw. Novak simply rehashes trite, clichéd material. At one embarrassing point, he compares modern American business CEO's to the Greek soldiers at Thermopylae, holding off the barbarian hordes. As if CEO's, with probably not a day of physical labor in their lives, trying to manipulate their stock price, were the equivalent of men fighting to the death to save their civilization. But at least we know that the author is 'well read' (as if Thermopylae weren't in every Western Civ course already)
The main argument consists of Novak putting the word "ethical" in the same sentence as "business", as if this somehow proved anything. He also wastes much space reciting the well-known example of Andrew Carnegie; as if anyone doesn't know it already. We get it--one wealthy person gave his money away (while the other 99% kept it in trust funds for their own future offspring).
Novak then attempts to drop every clichéd literary allusion possible. He quotes Ben Franklin; de Tocqueville; and the Bible--as if the Bible couldn't be used to justify ANY point on economics, capitalistic or communistic. He also is wrong, consistently. He states that capitalism is only 200 years old (pg 84); of course, it is far older than that--for example, the anciet Romans had corporations (collegia); double-entry bookeeping dates at least from the middle ages. Capitalism the *word* itself may date from about 200 years, but the idea behind it is far older. Novak confuses the beginning of a word's usage, and the concept behind it.
He claims only leaders in democracies are forced to take responsibility for their decisions (p89), saying unelected rulers like Pinochet ruined their economies. But in fact, Pinochet helped overthrow Chile's democratically elected president, Allende, an actual socialist-communist who would have violently opposed Novak's entire theory on capitalism & religion!
He gratuitously throws in an allusion to Robinson Crusoe, calling him 'mythical' (pg 65), and pointing out that nobody is self-sufficient. Of course, Robinson Crusoe was a fictional *character*, but was closely based on a real person, Alexander Selkirk, that did live self-sufficiently on a deserted Island for many years, creating his own miniature society. (Hey author, try reading 'The Solitude of Alexander Selkrik', you must have missed that one in English Lit 101.). In any case, 'myth' has a specific literary meaning and Novak misuses it to try and scope a cheap shot. A novel about solitude has nothing to do with being 'mythical'. Novak cannot write.
The only reason this book is bought so much is that colleges assign it to business students, and American Roman Catholics like Novak's rewriting of the Gospel. For a true defense of free-market economics, try Ayn Rand's work, Murray Rothbard, F. Von Hayek, or Ludwig von Mises.

Von Hayek, or Ludwig von Mises.
stimulating book yet many issues to be discussed further

After finishing this book, i got the impression that the author has touched something about the philosophical grounding on capitalism, however, the book is not deep enough in analysing these grounds. 1 the moral basw which the author inspected is of the christian ( or rather ) catholic culture, the reasons of the christian culture is the most suitable one to suit with the capitalism are not yet fully explained 2 its hidden presumption on pratising ideal capitalism is having a good government, good smaall societies to support the neighbours or citizens, good law system etc, but if i live in a place full of corruption, business law system not well developed, what should i do? he does not suggest any means 3 the model which he inspected is the usa, he also studied catholic, i would rather say, it is like, when someone got a hammer, all things can be solved by using it 4 i cannot agree more than that, doing business must have moral and courage if you have interest in discussing with me in this book or others, pls email me

I am in the Information Marketing Business. I can honestly say that the info-biz is a recession proof business - easy to start - exciting - and it allows you to make a profit (a huge profit) doing what you love to do.
Robert Skrob brought together some of the best info marketers in the country to illustrate this step-by-step guide. It is easy to read, full of great information to get you started on the right path, gives you resources and expert marketers to learn from.
What I find interesting is that many people, especially in this economy, are looking for terrific and fun ways to expand their wallets. Rarely do they even consider information marketing as a way to work from home and profit. This book will get you thinking about the possibilities from successful people just like you.
I highly recommend this Step-by-step guide for any forward thinking individuals who have a passion or specialized knowledge and is looking for a way to expand their income.

I'm still reading this book. The first few chapters are a bit dry, but do set the scene for the rest of the book. I had to laugh when the author said blacksmithing is on the rise.. around here any blacksmithing gear is bought up by yuppies who hang the tools on their wall and call it period art... it means the demand is high, but it doesn't mean the yuppies know which end of the hammer to hold, just that it suits the dining room better than the kitchen decor.
The book... once in the real meat of the book (chapter 4 on) there is good instructional material, and more than adequate diagrams (single line and monochrome sketches) to assist the reader in learning the techniques and methods. There is a strong focus on the older techniques, but some mention of the newer technologies being used by modern hobbiests and adherents. There is enough diversity in the content to appeal to bladesmiths, farriers, armourers (SCA), and wrought iron workers, although the focus is definitely on wrought work, and general techniques.

This is a very good book, it's my second favorite to learn from.
This is my favorite:Blacksmithing Primer: A Course in Basic and Intermediate Blacksmithing (Paperback) by Randy McDaniel.
If you are learning by yourself it's a much more complete set of lessons, including exactly how to position teh hammer to get each set of results. No other books teaches this.
The DVD set is excellent too, but expensive.
(Note, I know the guy who publishes the videos, but I didn't know he did until after I'd bought them, watched them, and recommended them to somone else...)

Alex Bealer's text on the subject of blacksmithing is not only of experience, but also the experience of others. In his book he talks quite a bit about the late Sam Yellin. About smith's that he knows, and about his own smithing experience. It may be long winded to some, or may be pompous. Yet Mr. Bealer is sharing not only knowledge with you. But opening doors to the same past we came from. I have been a hobby smith for 16 years, and this book is one of the finest books on the subject out there. Let the sparks fly, and the anvil ring.

This text is an excellent OVERVIEW of the history, context, and general techniques of blacksmithing. If you are looking for a general understanding of the art, this is the perfect text, and on that basis I recommend it very highly.
I do NOT recommend this text for the serious student of the subject. The discussion is generally shallow and has a tendency toward casual errors. It also presents blacksmithing traditions as fact despite modern dispute (E.g., Edge packing, pp 168-169, is now generally considered nonsense by reputable blacksmiths). If you want to learn about practical blacksmithing techniques, Jack Andrew's "New Edge of the Anvil" is much, much better. If you want to learn to make weapons, Dr. Jim Hrisoulas' several books ("The Complete Bladesmith," "Master Bladesmith," etc.) are much better, but very specialized.
Summary: highly recommended as a general overview. Insufficient depth for specialized study.

Laura Day is on to something. One might feel a bit overwhelmed by the "new age" tone of the book but pay attention. She has a powerful perspective. I think this book and "Welcome to Your Crisis" are even better than "The Circle"..they have parctical, hands on advice. Not necessarily for what I would term a crisis - more a dilemma or feeling "stuck".

This is an ideal book for those who are entrepreneurial and in a position professionally where the skill of intuitive ability is demanded. I often think that Richard Branson and Madonna are highly intuitive in their enterprises. If you want to have both brains focusing on wealth creating, Laura Day provides excercises to get the ball rolling. Learn to make your right brain and left brain best friends to seize opportunities daily.

This is a good book it's longer then some of her other ones and it has a lot more exercises in it then some of her other books so unless you have a lot of time on your hands it will take a while to read it. But, other then that it is a good book and I did enjoy it. I'm going to start to read practical intuition in love.

From a practical standpoint, Day separates thinking of emotions, pure logic and reasoning from intuition. She defines this intuitive thinking as logical and, essential for success. Her thoughts are quite compelling. Rather than the pure gut feeling or abstractions that generally constitute intuition, Day develops an understanding of how this skill can be cultivated from both thought and feeling. Rather than an illogical urge, it becomes a developed sense. The exercises and examples extensively developed empower the reader to adapt this skill for personal achievement. A good read.
