If even just half of the instances in Mr. Burroughs' book are true, none of these characters should ever raise children until they get their acts together. The story is funny, very quirky, extremely disturbing and labeling these people as excessively dysfunctional is putting it waaaaaaaay too mildly. The book will not give you any warm fuzzies, that's for sure. If it does, you need psychiatric help. Mr. Burroughs is a wonderful writer with excellent comic timing. But please be warned, some of this stuff is brutal and troubling to the point of almost making me ill. Talking with someone who works with such families, these kind of idiosyncratic qualities are not that uncommon. Well worth reading, but be prepared.

Run from this book...or take your scissors to it.

The reviews on the cover of this book were wildly misleading; I found no pleasure or humor in reading this tragic and twisted memoir. I actually felt sickened and violated after being exposed to the author's graphic depiction of his first and abusive sexual experience. I actually wish the toxic memory of this book could be erased from my mind. As a result, I will NOT donate this book to Goodwill to pollute anyone else's mind...it will go straight to the TRASH where it belongs.

This book is too easy to read

If it was not for the overtly sexual and disturbing subject manner i would have thought this book was written by a ten year old boy. I got this book because it was at the dollar bookstore and i wanted a change a pace from the English Literature i have been reading lately.

I also got sick of all the pop culture references thought out the book. I also don't believe a lot of what in this memoir is true. The most appalling thing about this story is that all of the characters in this book felt it was ok for him to be sexually active when he was 13 and to have a 33 year old pedophile as a boyfriend. I gave this three stars because it was readable. Another thing that bugs me about this book is the way it is published. The words on the pages are too big and there is way too many spaces between the lines. This makes the book like 300 hundred pages. But if it was mass market paperback it would only be like 150 pages. With the enviorment in a state of decline i felt it should have used less paper. The only reason they made the book this way is too make it seem like it is a bigger book then it really is. If i paid the retail price for it i would have be livid.

While skimming through the reviews for Running with Scissors, I noticed that readers either loved it or hated it. I think that it depends on how you look at the book. If you are expecting to be entertained by the bizarre stories that Burroughs tells throughout his memoir, I think you will love it. If you are expecting a great piece of literary work, not so much. Burroughs is comparable to David Sedaris, and although I have not read any of Sedaris's books, although I do own a few, I know that they are lightly written, you don't have to think while reading them books. I loved the book, I thought it was bizarre and hilarious, and I think that is all the reader is supposed to get out of it. So my opinion is that you will either love it or hate it depending on what your expectations of the book are.

Augusten Burroughs should be ashamed of himself for writing such trash. It was neither funny...I can't beleive anyone would laugh at it, nor entertaining, nor horrible, because I don't for one minute beleive it was a true story. I read the first half and then threw it in the trachcan.

Actually, as its name implies.. This book is the ultimate guide in the process of choosing a specialty.
Other books that come after it are anita tylor's "how choose a medical specialty", which is more to the point but gives little detail about each specialty. After is "So You Want to Be a Brain Surgeon" which has much less in each specialty than the previous two.

A Great Reference for 95% of US Medical Students

Review Date: 2007-11-20
If you're having trouble deciding what particular path of medicine to follow, this guide could be very beneficial. With all of the studying/reading/slaving one does as a medical student, it's easy to forget that you quickly need to decide what you want to be when you grow up. Written by a collection of very talented people who seemingly all studying or trained in Chicago, this book delves into all major specialties, the application basics, and even how personality might play a role.

For 95% or more of all US medical students this is something they SHOULD peruse through if they have the slightest hesitation about what specialty to choose. However, my minor critiques are for the small margins the book glosses over. The author mentions how the possibilities are nearly endless with an medical degree, but it leaves it at that. A few examples of a MD/JD lawyer or MD/MBA executive would help. Also some of the very small niche residencies are completely omitted (e.g. prevmed and occhealth). Also, despite the OB/GYN chapter being written by a Navy physician, he completely forgot to mention the possibilities the military can present. [He mentions the public health service but not the military?] Hopefully these holes can be filled in for the next edition.

One of the better books on comparing specialties

I would recommend this book to the undecided medical students in their 3rd year- I bought this early in my 4th year after having read Anita's book on Choosing a Medical Specialty, and still being uncertain. I was trying to talk myself out of Gen Surg... Ultimately, a book is not going to make the decision for you, but it is good to be informed and it helps to either reinforce what your gut instinct is telling you. Try to borrow a friends or buy a used copy- but it's definitely worth a read!

This book was really helpful for me. Talk about a hostile environment, I was deployed in the desert, so I ordered the book off of Amazon, and it came on just the right day, when everything was going wrong, my boss was trying to find everything I possibly did wrong, and I was homesick and missed my family and friends, my life. This book really put me into perspective of what is important, and reminded me of what I am doing the job I am doing. I didn't want the book to end! It truly helped to get me in the right spirit.

If you're in a job that seems stressful and you need some encouragement, this book is for you. You can choose to be happy at work or you can choose to be miserable. This book clearly let's you see which choice is in your best interest! You can be peaceful at work regardless to your work circumstance if you choose to. This book was worth reading and sharing with other people that I work with.

The Best Practical Guide to Taking Charge I have Read
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-11
I would recommend this book to anyone that is looking for practical, down-to-earth ideas covering various phases or chronological events (accepting a new position, hiring, firing, counseling, etc.) in the leadership continuum. This is not fluff, theory or high-level stuff, but practical chapters, well-arranged, that can, in a 15-20 minute read (per chapter), provide you with a number of things you can implement immediately. Lots of common sense, checklists, to-dos, techniques ideas, etc. I have used many, and shared them with members of my staff. I have recommended this book to many and will continue to do so. More than worth the price of the book and the time to read.

If you are a seasoned, leadership professional, you will find some good reminders, fresh ideas, and things you can use. If you are new to leadership, just got promoted, or aspiring to management, you have got to have this book. It will get you started quickly, and moving and thinking in the right direction. It is in my office 24X7 and I make it a point to reread every few months at least parts. I wish I would have had this book 20 years ago.

As a Performance Development Specialist in the automotive components field, I am always looking for ways to enhance the leadership programs I am associated with. I read the reviews of this book first and then read four chapters randomly to determine if the negative reviews were valid in any way. My conclusion is that the critics of this book do not have an understanding of what leadership is. There is more hard data and usefull information packed into this less than 300 page book than any other single source I have found. Page 108 should be mandatory reading for all Americans. I can only conclude that the few negative reviews were from people who are naturally inclined to be against anything associated with the military or authority figures in general. We in the business community would be much better off if we practiced some of the skills and characteristic behaviors that obviously were acquired through years of sacrifice and contributions. Wisdom is indeed paid for.

How to book for managers and professionals

Smith has trained executives in the military and large corporations and through it all has developed a strong knowledge of how to run a business from top to bottom. The book not only goes over the most important aspects of running a business, but also provides best practices type information for each area.
Because each chapter is self-contained it does not depend on you reading prior chapters to understand the current one. So, if you need to jump to the area on hiring and firing then you can do so and understand the chapter. By the same token, if you don't need a chapter then you can just skip it (but I wouldn't advise you to do that because you never know when you may suddenly need it). I liked the thoroughness and depth of coverage of the book. In a world where too many books are nebulous and vague in their advice it is nice to find one that gives practical and useful advice.
Another high point of the book is the checklists. The use of the checklist frees you from having to remember all the steps in a process or all the little problems that can emerge if something is missed.
The book is filled with practical advice and is sure to broaden your knowledge of management and provide you with more tools to manage your business. From any level of management up to the top executives, this is a very useful book and a nice concise summary of the dozen or so separate books from my management courses in college.

Worthwhile. Valuable checklists

Review Date: 1999-07-07
This book is a minimally-rewritten version of "Taking Charge" which Smith published a few years ago. The book contains useful and extremely pragmatic advice for managers and leaders. It is more oriented towards "big shots" than first line managers, but there is value for anyone who manages people. Biggest criticism--There is not an overriding theme in the book, it is a collection of chapters on individual subjects. Biggest attaboy--The book has a number of checklists that are useful. The author is a former military officer, and that shows in his examples, but the advice he gives is broadly applicable.

The Book of Virtues by Wm J Bennentt is a collection of fiction and non-fiction stories, each with a moral attached. Before you run back to the crime flicks and sexy, steamy fare on TV, take another look. You know how good it feels to take a cool shower on a hot day? Well .....Virtues by Bennett is a mini-bath for the soul. I like the fact that these tales are not just for children; after all, we big kids need reminders to love our neighbors,do good. do the RIGHT thing, etc. And don't let the author's rather conservative views scare you off! These stories just hold timeless truths you've known since you were little. You've just forgotten.

I am 54 years old and was raised in a way that the poetry and stories mean something to me because of the era in which I was raised. Purity was prized, discipline by spanking was administered and appreciated in time because the alternative was much worse, which created self-discipline in most things. Honesty, responsibility, compassion, courage and faith have been lost in the last twenty years with the "me" generations getting everything they want with instant gratification. The children of today are about to come crashing down hard with the realities of life without virtues. It isn't easy. Nothing is free, and Bennett has compiled a tasteful way of learning some of the lessons without experiencing them personally, which I can tell you, my generation has experienced in spades. Sure, he could have put other stories in that could have expressed it differently, but these were the stories that moved him most, and when we write our "Book of Virtues" we can add the stories that mean the most to us. Reading the "American Book of Poetry" is where it started. Keep up the reading. Keep up the digging and striving for the virtues listed in the book. America needs people of virtue, people of honesty, even people of faith, because right now, the selfish "Gen-X" generation and their children are about to get our nation blown up by the very arrogance the British had that said we know better because of who we are and what we know. Sadly, they know nothing. They have no true hardship or challenges that forge the steel in their spines. Most can't even throw a punch, because violence has been bred out of them. Well, wake up, people, the world is violent, the world is harsh and tough, and without the virtues of self-discipline, faith and courage, they won't have the perseverance to survive.

This is a great little book to keep in your desk drawer at work. Both as a performance coach and an employer, I highly recommend putting a copy in your break room. In a fast-paced office, how better to use 5 minutes of an employee's time to help them get re-focused, re-energized and re-engaged? Give new meaning to taking a coffee break - using the time to refuel your whole self so you have more to give to the work in front of you.

Not all of the situations may apply to everyone (I hope not!) - such as difficult coworkers and tyrannical bosses - but within the 100 mediations and exercises there is definitely something for everyone. A great little tool to decrease chaos and stress and increase fulfillment and productivity at work.

First, let me disclose that I am a client of the author. So perhaps I should be upset with Mr. Brounstein for putting out a book that has the same information I paid him thousands of dollars to teach me. Buy the book.

Remember the first time you dealt with a difficult employee - the knot in your stomach as you called them into your office. Learn about giving constructive feedback instead of criticism, and you may just turn a problem employee into a model employee - it happened to me. The knot may not go away completely, but with this technique it will definitely be more manageable. Buy the book.

Work smarter not harder. Learn about Results-based Performance Management, and get results, not just busy employees. Teach your employees to manage themselves by holding them accountable for results, not just activities that you give them to do. Buy the book.

Learn about coaching techniques such as Tutoring With Questions that will get your employees to start answering their own questions - and getting the right answers. Buy the book.

About a year ago I suddenly found myself in charge of 100 employees that had been thrown together from different cultures as the result of mergers and corporate realignment. Through the techniques I learned from Marty that are revealed in this book, I have been able to build an effective team of managers who in turn have helped me turn the organization around. A year ago, we were missing committed deadlines one after another. Now, we consistently meet and often beat our commitments. I often refer to my copy of the book for a refresher on Marty's techniques and regularly refer my managers to the book when they run into difficult situations. Buy the book.

Just in case I forgot to mention it: Buy the book.
