I got a very good view of many topics related to sports marketing. I would say that Melvin Helitzer gives us a great overview of what a professional needs to know to perform well in the field. It's really great tour to get acquainted with the dream job. The sports world industry deserves professionals to market, communicate and advertise with the flavor Helitzer gives to us readers.

Looking for a new job, I was recommended to this book. Maybe it was a coincidence, but within two weeks of reading the book and following some its sports marketing techniques, I landed a job with a major college sports department. Call me lucky, or smart that I found this book.

As a professor, I'm always grateful for texts which students not only can afford but hold on to even after the course is completed. The new 3rd edition of "The Dream Job: Sports Publicity, Promotion and Marketing" is just that kind of book. It is comprehensive, filled with hundreds of examples and exhibits and wonderfully humorous. Outside of that, I don't think much of it!

Tis book is applicable inside the classroom and out. I first read it for a business class and then later when I got my first job in public realtions. It really helped me understand and familiarize myself with sports PR and PR in general. If you read only one book about public relations I'd recommend you read Guerrilla PR Wired by Michael Levine, but if you can read two I'd read The Dream Job.

We started our Clifford journey with "Clifford the Big Red Dog". It is a really good story. The others are not as enjoyable from a parent perspective. This sone is nice that it has fire safety eduction in it. It's not so nice that Clifford destroys a man's fruit stand and just laughs it off.
Clifford is always a winner...

Clifford and his adventures are always very popular in my classroom. Some may argue that many of Clifford's adventures are a stretch, they are nonetheless captavating to a young audience. In this edition, Clifford after being introdcued to the role of firefighters and the importance of fire safety gets a chance to be a fire rescue dog is his own right. The book is a great seque into fire safety and prevention.

I had to read this horrible book for an NCODP. Someone please give me those hours back. At best, he has maybe 40-60 pages of worthy material in here. It is padded all to hell and written in a "See Spot Run" style that is amazingly insulting. Even worse, none of these "leadership" stories involve combat. They are all about APFTs and barracks inspections. Snore.

This is excellent reading for all business personel. It is down to earth, grass roots, management. Basically the author teaches that without training, cross training, and effective execution, sense of duty, loyality and taking care of your employees (soldiers),the business is slated for failure. I was so impressed by this book that I bought 4 additional copies and gave them to managers 3 levels up the management chain in our company.

The concept of the three meter zone is brilliant for business-- when combined with some of the reading in Small Unit Leadership: A Common Sense Approach (notice some, I wasn't entirely happy with the other book) you'll find that there are four basic types of employees:
1)Willing and Able: Those who don't need huge amounts of supervision (100 meter zone, completely safe and needs a pat on the back every once in a while)
2)Willing and Unable: Those who can be molded/trained (50 meter zone, needs some training to get the job done but is completely willing to learn with some help)
3)Unwilling and Able: 50 meter zone employee who needs guidance to get him back to the 100 meter zone
4)Unwilling and Unable: 3 meter zone employee-- immediate up-training and close supervision required.
The concept of the 3, 50, and 100 meter zones is based off of a training that the author received concerning the Bouncing Betty Mine-- this is an anti-personnel mine that was capable of killing within 3 meters, wounding at 50, and wasn't out of danger-close until 100 meters. As a supervisor, we are the mine. Our job is to get our employees out of our killing zone (in other words, write ups, disciplinary action, etc) as quick as possible.
Like other great military/business reads that have proceeded it the material is given concisely with a minimum of fluff; you can tell that the author knew what he wanted to say and how to say it. I highly recommend this book for those who want to learn more about military doctrine in business; my copy is right next to the Book of Five Rings and the Art of War.

I bought this book ten years ago, when I first quit drinking. While it does contain some useful information, it is written in an overly simplistic, almost juvenile style that I found extremely annoying. Also, although there is a brief section on different treatment alternatives, all of the advice in the book assumes that the reader has chosen to go to AA/NA, so it really isn't a fair representation of the many alternatives out there.

This book, while written in a very reader friendly and understandable style and well laid out, is little more than a thinly veiled advertisement for 12 step groups--AA in particular, with a nod to NA. Many comments are completely unscientific and medically dangerous, including one on page 90 where it is stated in a footnote that methadone maintenance for pregnant mothers is to be discouraged and the momshould get off methadone ASAP to "save the baby from withdrawals" and improve her chances of keeping the baby. This is ludicrous and false. Methadone is the gold standard of treatment for pregnant opioid addicts. Tapering a pregnant mother off methadone can and often does result in fetal death, even when done slowly. The infant does not have the resources to deal with an unmedicated, in utero withdrawal. It is well known within the medical community that pregnant mothers must be maintained on their methadone until delivery, and at that time the baby is slowly and carefully weaned off with morphine or another medication and does not suffer through the rigors of unmedicated withdrawals in the womb. The advice given here is fallacious, dangerous, and designed to frighten. There is NO REASON social services should or would be involved in a case where a mother was taking ONLY medically prescribed methadone.
In addition, the book pays only the merest brief lip service to other methods of recovery, and suggests that they are not the equal of the 12 step groups. The facts are that 12 step groups have an abysmal failure rate--about 95% by their own surveys of their membership--and have been ruled in court to be a religious organization, not a treatment program, yet this book presents it is the end all and be all for recovering addicts.

This book has some useful and practical info for those who are struggling with a drug or alcohol problem (which is why I give it 3 stars instead of 1 for its abstinence fetish). I would consider it highly recommended for someone who has already decided that they want to quit using all mind-and-mood altering substances.
However, this book is still heavily influenced by society's bias against drugs, including alcohol and tobacco. While the main author is an M.D., he, like all people, is a human being as well and shares many of the same irrational biases as humans tend to in general. The author goes as far as to make the unfounded assertion that alcohol has absolutely no health benefits, and cites fascist junk science about the grave harmfulness of secondhand smoke (in its section on quitting tobacco as well as other drugs).
The author also says that depressives should avoid anti-depressants and especially the stimulant medication methylphenidate (Ritalin), which I think is dangerous. If anything depressives are not medicated enough, and many non-depressed people do not realize how debilitating and painful depression can be...thus my strong stance against demanding or even suggesting abstinence for all people who have drug abuse issues. I have found dextromethorphan, hydrocodone, and THC (which are either illegal or illegal to use as anti-depressants/anxiolytics), despite their dangers with excessive use, to be far more effective against depression than standard anti-depressants, let alone the spiritual and social pap pushed by the 12-step based Recovery industry and the fascist anti-drug lobby.

Hi Jeremey thank you and all affliated with the design and information provided in the book! For those who don't know Jeremey was a teacher at my college, Virginia College in Birmingham. He really helped me convey my inner thoughts of how to actually create something. I was stuck in design limbo for a long time till his teachings changed my life forever! To all involved with the work on this title it is our first book and hopefully we will have many more from VC our students and teachers are some of the best! Congrats!

I found this book a little disappointing. If you already have a basic knowledge of Colour theory and know about CMYK & RGB, raster and vector images then this book may be too basic for you. It has173 pages with about 36 in colour. I found this quite annoying particularly when the author was talking about the effect of colour in a screenshot and the page is printed in black and white (grayscale) - so you can't see what he is talking about unless you go to the website yourself.
I learned some new things but I don't think it is enough to rate this book any higher than a 3.

I teach web design at a community college. Our biggest teaching issues aren't technology skills -- most students pick those up easily, and there are literally hundreds of technical books around to help -- but design skills. It's very hard to make a group of technology students care about color, type, and all the details that make a page communicate visually. There are other books that attempt to fill this gap (Robin Williams spring to mind) but no book has really done it WELL. This book has. I was worried asking my students to buy 'yet another' textbook with costs skyrocketing, but this book is a worthwhile investment. If you don't understand design basics is the place to start.

Mr Frost does a fantastic job at telling you what the industry is all about from the beginning to the seasoned vet. This book, written by David Currier (with Jay Frost), is a superb introduction to the career of pharmaceutical selling. David is an experienced professional (having worked with both pharma and biotech, and now with medical devices), and his practical and positive perspectives are very helpful for someone just starting out.
The amount of information is just right, and what I appreciated most was the tone (or the "voice", as it would be expressed among medical writers) of the book. There was a realistic familiarity to the writing style, a personable approachability, so that the reader feels that the author is serving as a helpful mentor.
I kept asking myself, while reading, whether this volume would be most appropriate for someone seeking to break into the field, or a new rep trying to get underway. I finally decided that it was well-targeted for both. In fact, I have a friend looking to break into pharma sales and the next destination for this book is going to be his briefcase, tomorrow.
A very helpful element of the book is David's continual practice of defining terms - as we all know, the pharmaceutical industry is full of jargon, and I cannot think of a better introduction than this one to help a new arrival get familiar with the basic landscape. Also, one of the best training methods is storytelling, and the book is sprinkled with a number of helpful illustrations drawn from field experiences.
For any new, or hoping-to-be-new field sales rep - highly recommended.

Poppy King's self-deprecating approach is refreshing for an entrepreneur. She is very open about her periods of self doubt and how she overcame those challenging times. She shares her mistakes and makes suggestions on how to avoid the same pitfalls. Reading this is like having a very close, successful friend thoughtfully take you under her wing. Poppy is an excellent mentor. The one thing I keep wondering: does she really know how much she has truly accomplished? I don't think she appreciates the magnitude of her accomplishments. Lucky for her audience-she believes anyone can accomplish the same and she wants to help! For people who want to judge-I'd like to pose the question: What were you doing at age 18? After becoming a huge success before the age of 20, she could have easily blown the money and "retired" to the beaches of Australia- however-she stuck it out in the boardroom and is still thriving. Poppy has staying power. She knows how to adapt. She knows how to write an engaging story. Thank you, Poppy!

I bought this and couldn't manage more interest than casually flipping through to read the "My Story" sections. The advice itself seemed too vague and general to really be helpful.
Possibly helpful for someone who just needs some inspiration. Not so helpful for anyone looking for specific advice.

A RARE and GENEROUS book you'll HAVE TROUBLE PUTTING DOWN

Poppy King, a self-taught entrepreneur who started a multi-million dollar company at age 18, shares her insight and wisdom in this beautiful book. Her specific lessons - ranging from how to make a fantasy an idea and an idea a decision, how to benefit from SWOT analysis, and how to shrewdly navigate the market - lead the reader through the journey of creating and maintaining a successful product (something she has done more than once!)
King's honesty and humor inspire but never overwhelm. Her advice is generous, logical, and level-headed. Keep it simple, keep it true, and be YOU, she tells us.
Having this book on my shelf makes me feel like I've got a big wonderful secret at home. It is truly hard to put down. Highly recommended for anyone who has ever dreamt of making a difference - in any field.

While many of us may sometimes have an original idea that we think will make us rich and famous, that same many will probably toss the idea aside thinking, Oh, I could never put that across" or "It probably wouldn't work anyway." And therein lies the difference between many and Poppy King.
When she graduated from high school in Australia (not too many years ago), Poppy didn't seem to have much of a future. Her grades had not been outstanding; she didn't really excel in any field. What she did have was a desire for something which eventually became an idea - an idea that grew into a multimillion dollar company. Within three years of her high school graduation Poppy headed the company that produced her own lipstick brand, Poppy Industries. She had sold her product to Barney's, and in 1995 was named one of the "Global Leaders of the New Millennium" by Time magazine.
Not bad for a young woman with a lackluster future! She accomplished all of this by dint of energy, enthusiasm, and a firm belief that she could do it. She shares her path to success, including setbacks and roadblocks, in "Lessons of A Lipstick Queen." As Poppy says, "I have taken everything that I have learned and plotted it out to show you how you, too, have what it takes. You can find, explore, and make any idea happen."
"Plotted it out" she has in 12 chapters, beginning with "You Already Have Ideas" in which she shows us to recognize the ideas that all of us have, and concluding with"Keep the Flame Alive," reminding us, among other things, that the customer is always right, and that our workers are treasure troves of ideas.
A motivational story at heart Lessons of A Lipstick Queen is geared to bringing out the entrepreneur in each of us.
