The first few chapters leads the reader gently into appreciating the differences between Windows and *nix based nomenclature. There are a number of practical tools covered which would assist any Windows investigator to perform post forensic analysis. The tools needed to get the job done on *nix boxes are covered more than adequately. Chapter 4 introduces the reader to some practical advice on triage and live data analysis, there are some useful practical exercises using search techniques and the author shares his experience offering some good practical advice on narrowing the search to relevant areas of investigation. Chapter 5 provides some of the best examples I have seen of the "top 10 hacking" tools covered. This should inspire any reader to appreciate how best to investigate against such "tools". This chapter inspires the reader to conduct their own research in a laboratory environment with just enough of a sweetener provided in the examples to encourage them to do so. Chapter 6 takes the reader on an insightful tour of the /proc filesystem highlighting some of the key areas an investigator needs to know in terms of live analysis and key areas for volatile data capture. There's small additional section on the sysfs which covers additional areas of interest relevant to the investigator. Included in this chapter is an insightful walkthru of an investigation further re-enforcing the ideas presented by the author. Chapter 7 guides the reader through the filesystem, highlighting key areas such as configuration files. The author also provides the reader with some inventive techniques for investigation. Although a short chapter it concisely provides enough detail to assist the reader in their investigations. Chapter 8 contains detailed instructions on the use and installation of anti-virus/malware software with a good overview provided by the author of Linux file permissions/security. The final appendix is a worthy addition providing a good overview of auditing and logging not just on *nix but includes, Windows, firewalls, router, IDS and IPS systems. It provides a complementary addition to the literature.

Summary.
The author has sought to introduce the reader to a very wide subject area, which considering the diversity of Unices is a brave and audacious move. It is quite amazing how much the author has managed to cover and condense into only 8 chapters and an appendix. The authors clearly have a vast amount of forensic experience especially with regard to incident response, providing practical and sound advice to the reader. There are a number of other sources hinted at by the authors which shows thorough research benefiting this literature and ultimately the reader. This book provides the reader with a perfect introduction to UNIX and Linux Forensic Analysis, additional it should also benefit forensic investigators from the Windows centric world in grasping some of the power available with Linux and Open Source tools. This should allow the reader to complement their own arsenal of investigation tools and techniques with a complementary set of Linux forensic CDs and methodology. This is a book I would heartily recommend to experienced computer forensic examiners and those starting out. Especially to those investigators more used to the Windows environment. The book is clearly an introduction and hints at more to come. I very much look forward to reading more material from the authors covering more advanced topics in their next book. The final paragraph of the synopsis clearly says it all.

Very complete, super helpful. If you are scared of C++ STL and you think it is an endless sea, this book will help you put things in an order. Very practical and it goes deeply inside the fundamentals. A must have for the non-hacker. This book is for the academic type scientist who wants to learn programming in an orthodox science like way. So if you are a mathematician a physicist or in general a scientist who want to get into C++ and program use this book. Also try other books from this author like C++ Templates: The Complete Guide. He is a very talented technical writer and scientist too.

I got this book originally back in 2001, and I still use it almost every day as the first stop for any STL issue I have. It's also what I give new employees who need to get up to speed on the STL. IMHO there's no better place to start if you want to learn to use the STL.

If you use the STL, you need this book

Still the best book on the STL. Buy this and Josuttis' templates book and you'll be set to learn the intricacies of C++ programming. There are very few genuinely useful C++ books; Josuttis' books are certainly among them... to the point where I almost never bother consulting any others. If I can't understand it from reading Josuttis, I delve into the header files themselves.

Excellent book for a broad overview of Computer/Network Security

Review Date: 2008-05-17
Counter Hack Reloaded (CHR) is an excellent book for someone looking for a broad overview of computer/network security written in a very clear, logical, and even enjoyable manner.

After CHR's Introductory chapter, the reader is given an overview on Networking, Linux/Unix, and Windows. These three chapters give the reader enough to be able to understand the subsequent chapters which deal with specific phases of an attack. These phases are, Reconnaissance, Scanning, Gaining Access (with different chapters for different methods of gaining access,) Maintaining Access, and Covering Tracks. Throughout these chapters, CHR introduces the reader to the tools used by attackers; how they work, where to get them, and how to defend yourself against them (often by using the tools themselves.) Finally, CHR "puts it all together" with different scenarios of attacks. The scenarios show how attackers use different phases of an attack, and different tools, to penetrate a network/system. Throughout this chapter CHR highlights the mistakes the victims make in their networks/systems to allow the attacks to succeed.

CHR is exceptionally well written, especially for a technical subject. Explanations of complex topics are clear, simple and even entertaining. I would even go so far to say that it is a joy to read.

Overall, CHR is about core concepts. It's about understanding how attacks occur, and understanding why they can succeed. Only then can you have any hope in understanding how to go about defending yourself.

I'm technically not finished reading this book yet and probably never will be until they update it again and still it will be a good reference manual for several years anyway. Skoudis and Liston do have a way of making complex issues seem to make sense. I thank them for writing it and thank Amazon for making it available to me.

Easy read for terms, too much stuff in some places

It was an easy read, as far as the writing itself. It wasn't too dry, but in some places there was too much information all at once. I've only read the first 350 pages or so, but I can say for sure that Chapter 6 should have been cut into 2 or 3 chapters. The sheer ammount of material covered in those 100 pages or so was too much to be taken all at once.

Most of the tools in this book are widely used and known, but the reason that this book is so interesting is that it describes how you can defend yourself from attacks with such tools.

Therefore this is a very good reference book.

This is an excellent book if you are heavily into the search process. It begins with a basic understanding of the internet, the web and how search engines work. It then proceeds to explain what the 'invisible' or 'deep' web is, how to recognize it and how to deal with the search process of it. It includes a huge section of reference sources on the web.

Excellent instruction for librarians . . .

Review Date: 2003-06-12
I retired five years ago after thirty years in a very large public library system, and recently found it necessary to return to the trenches for awhile, in a rather smaller system. In that half-decade, of course, the Internet changed drastically and, even though I'm constantly online and intimately familiar with the major search engines (and many of the minor ones), there was a large number of new reference information sources with which I was not at all familiar. So I went looking for professional tools to remedy my ignorance. This is the first book I've seen in the publisher's "CyberAge" series, and medthodologically, it's quite good. As others have noted, the static nature of print-on-paper means rapidly outdated material, but Sherman and Price show you how to attack the problem, so, even though I came across several (unfortunately) extinct databases, I was able to locate several new ones, too. This is a terrific instructional work for reference librarians, and the accompanying web site is near the top of my bookmarks at work.

Technical explanations for the truly web-savvy

Review Date: 2006-02-27
The author is the unsurpassed guru of InterNet searching, and is explicitly relied upon by other authors engaging in the same work. His website is the mother lode of additional information, which is very helpful. If you have one book on your shelf regarding InterNet resources, this should be it. That said, Mr. Sherman relies heavily upon explanations of the breadth and depth of various resources; these explanations are designed to pique the reader's interest in further self-directed exploration, but may be more than the average searcher might need.

Great guide to out of reach resources
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2003-05-29
"The Invisible Web" is a thorough, thoughtful guide to finding information lying just outside the reach of search engines. It can be divided into two parts.

The first part describes the strengths and weaknesses of search engines as tools for finding information on the World Wide Web and provides a good overview of the technical and business limitations that lead to the weaknesses. At the same time, the authors also provide a high-level explanation of how search engines operate and a comprehensive explanation of what types of resources are left out of search engine indexes. Although this section is a bit repetitive, it also stands as the best explanation I have encountered on the subject of Web resource accessibility (and inaccessibility) through the popular tools that searchers have at their disposal.

The second part provides a list of Invisible Web resources (resources that can not be indexed by search engines), organized by subject, with annotations. I personally did not find this list comprehensive, but it is a good place to start for those who have previously relied solely on search engines and directories for Web searching.

If you want to understand what resources are just beyond the grasp of search engines, and get a hand on them yourself, "The Invisible Web" is a great book to get you started.

Note: some of the URL's sited in the second part of the book are now gone. This is not a criticism of the book, but a reflection of the ever-changing nature of the Web.

The Culturally Proficient School
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-01
The make believe school district of Maple View in this book may not be so make believe. After all, the purpose for writing this book is to challenge educational leaders to go beyond the comfort zone that schools have operated in culturally for a long time. With that in mind, Maple View is really a composite of many schools all over the nation that are faced with the challenges of modern education in all its complexity, growing diversity and social changes.
The authors begin with proving the case for the importance of having cultural leadership. Schools, like the community at large, reflect changing demographics, growth and the need for expansion, equal opportunities to achieve, and continued availability of appropriate resources. Like the community at large, dynamic leadership is required to meet the challenges. Where do the leaders begin? The authors say to begin with oneself and they provide the tool for discovery with the Cultural Proficiency Receptivity Scale. It is the first of many reflective tools offered in this book.
This book is written to highlight several different characters as they travel along the road to cultural proficiency. With each of the five guiding principles for culturally proficient leadership, a vignette is presented that reflects the conversation between and among characters struggling with the various issues of cultural proficiency. Then an opportunity to write and reflect in the book format is provided to the reader. This self reflection tool is an opportunity to record current thoughts and can be looked at again and again as the reader's cultural proficiency begins to grow.
Key to this book is the discussion and reflection about the next tool - the Cultural Proficiency Continuum. The Cultural Proficiency Continuum can help the reader to understand her own road to cultural proficiency and what challenges lay ahead in order to keep progressing. Once again the format is discussion, conversation, and the opportunity to reflect. The Continuum is a challenge to every reader to be honest with one self. Only then, do the authors purport that individual growth can actually take place. When individuals change, buildings can change, school districts can change, and communities can change.
The authors outline their thoughts about what leadership standards should look like and the self imposed moral obstacles that can keep leaders from creating schools that are inclusive of all students. These standards are not necessarily easy to achieve, but they are essential for cultural proficiency in schools. The authors believe that nothing less than narrowing the gaps in achievement and equity are at stake here and the culturally competent leader is deliberate in thought and action in creating the atmosphere and climate of cultural competency.
The culturally competent leader uses both formal and informal communication to keep the conversations ignited that can lead to organizational changes. Organizational changes are built upon relationships. Those relationships occur at all levels in the organization (the school) and communication is the key to building relationships. Those conversations occur every day between and among students, teachers, administrators, school personnel, parents, school board and community members. The authors describe different modes of conversation that can enhance or impede cultural proficiency and provides a final tool to use in the form of dialogs which can be utilized as practice conversations.
Lastly, the authors present a challenge to school leaders to change both personally and professionally. Cultural proficiency requires questioning assumptions, changing attitudes, and transforming environments. All leaders make choices. Choices mean commitment. A commitment to cultural proficiency can make a difference in every student's life.
This reviewer found The Culturally Proficient School and its companion books, Cultural Proficiency: A Manual for School Leaders (Lindsey, R.B., Nuri Robins, K., Terrell, R.D., 2003) and Culturally Proficient Instruction: A Guide for People Who Teach (Nuri Robins, K., Lindsey, R.B., Lindsey, D.B., Terrell, R.D., 2002) to be very insightful in discussing the challenges of creating schools that openly strive to accept each and every student and to give value to their contributions to the fabric of the school. Especially interesting was the key to it all - the Cultural Proficient Continuum. This tool is meant to serve as a constant challenge for personal change. In a day when the conversation is all about student scores and achievement, it is inspiring to read about the conversations that should be taking place among all the parties in education. These conversations could be the impetus for systemic change that could truly narrow both achievement and equity gaps that as a democratic society we seek to overcome.

I read a review by P Malan, who warned that the print quality was poor, but I ordered the book anyway. I should have listened. The shoddiness of Amazon's "on-demand" printing defies description. The pages are streaky and low-contrast, in some cases almost impossible to read. The alignment is off, so some pages are crooked or trimmed too close to the content. There is no color of course, only black and white (I should say, gray and white). In short, imagine if you were to print out this book on an old laser printer and stick a nice cover on it -- which as it turns out is exactly what Amazon did. I sent my copy back.

Amazon gets one star for product quality, but to be fair to the author, I've given the book three stars for its content. Everything in the book is good advice, but little of it is new. An excellent resource for beginners, a nice refresh for more experienced designers. If the book appeals to you, try to find it somewhere else.

Caveat emptor -- Amazon is shipping "on-demand reprint" editions of this book, without warning. My copy seriously looks like it was printed at Kinkos on an aging black and white copier. Maybe it's a good book--I don't know, the quality bugs me so much I haven't even started it--but you should probably consider buying it from someplace that won't sell you an edition that was apparently printed in the back room of a crack house in Jersey.

The potential to vastly improve everyone's online experience

Review Date: 2005-10-26
I've been involved in Website design and implementation since 1996. I don't claim to be the top designer, but the success of my sites gives me enough stature to comment on a book like this. First, the downside of this book: It was published in 2003. Consequently, some of the references and information in it are a bit dated. But when you understand the points Chak makes in this book--that doesn't matter. The upside of this book is quite substantial.

When I began reading this, I figured it would be smart to keep a notepad next to the book because I'd probably pick up a pointer or two. I ended up with copious notes and several things to follow up on.

I've read umpteen books, newsletters, articles, and e-mails about Website design. Many of them propose the "right" way to implement a site. That way is "right" because it's the way that particular author does it. Fortunately, Chak stays above the fray, not even venturing into that territory. Instead, he focuses on the theme of getting your Website's visitors to do what you want them to do.

Most "how to do a Website" authors seem to forget why anyone has a Website in the first place--they get lost in the glitzy stuff and forget the site visitor. Chak stays keenly aware of the visitor throughout the entire book. In fact, five of the eight chapters are about Website visitors.

If you have a Website for any reason other than self-stroking your ego, then Chak's book is a "must read." Each chapter provides a solid explanation of key concepts for going beyond simple usability. That's where you want to go. You want to convert visitors into customers.

Chak isn't yet another Web designer who can sling a line of BS and then call it a book. He's a Web designer who has worked for major clients and has amassed the expertise that comes from that experience. He's also a solid researcher, and you can see this in his real-world examples. Add to this the fact that he's a great writer who communicates clearly and you have all the ingredients for an excellent book on Web design. After you read this book, you'll see why Chak is also in demand as a speaker at Web conferences.

This book has the potential to vastly improve the online experience for everybody. The trick to making that happen is to get all Webmasters to buy a copy, read it carefully, and implement what they learned. We can always hope....

A note on style and composition: Form is important, as it dictates readability. Fortunately, this book actually uses Standard Written English (SWE). In an age where most "authors" seem oblivious to basic writing, this book stands out as one where the author actually cares about communicating to the reader. Given the subject matter, Chak's consideration for the reader is a crucial plus.

I've been involved in ecommerce since the 90's so have quite a bit of knowledge. While some of the book was review, there were some golden nuggets that made this book a 'must have' for my library. Specifically, cycle times for posting - when to post, how long to post for, etc. It is advanced in nature so requires either some prior knowledge or a mindset to understand the complexities of the entire process. Additionally, the book references some resources that I knew were among the best in the industry which gave added trust to the validity of the content. I would like to have seen more of this so that is only reason for 4 stars.

If you have been selling online (on ebay and/or other channels) for a while and you have all the basics down, then this is the book for you. It will help you measure and evaluate your business in order to fine tune and scale your operation. Very well written. The author is the man behind the auction management software "Channel Advisor". I attended "ebay live 2006" in Las Vegas and most top power sellers sang the praises of the software, Channeladvisor Merchant, which could cost you about a $1000 per month and is for businesses with gross sales of $20,000 to $40,000 per month. I use Channeladvisor Pro, which is limited in channels of sales, and it only costs me $30 per month.
The book is not a plug for the software and the author does not engage in over promotion of his business in any way which was a pleasant surprise. I think of this book as an online business education in a nutshell. This was about the 10th ebay book that I have read and I very strongly recommend it to advanced sellers. Best of luck. I read this book because I am starting academic research on search engines. It was one of my first books on the subject. It actually deals with two aspects: (1) relevant issues in search engine design, and (2) a mathematically sound approach in building and querying large index strucutres. The explanation in the book on both aspects is short but to the point and explained in an understandable way. It also contains a short list + description of some key references. Great !

The author fully acomplishes the objective: teach his reader, at undergratuate level, how search engines work. Even some difficult subject, such as LSI, are treated at a level one can easilly understand.

One of the most important characteristics of the book is that it does math. Every formula has an example, usually using small matrix that allow the reader to easilly follow them.

The book is suitable for an objective introduction to the field. It is not very "academic", in the sense it is rather informal. If it is not a textbook, it could help some bewildered student to grasp the inner workings. It could also help a teacher to find clearer ways for explanations and good examples for classroom.

This book can help you to get insight into the fundamentals of SAP Solution Manager and also if you read every line very carefully it will help you with preparing for your certification exam for SAP Solution Manager 4.0 Operations, which I have passed after attending the SM100 course and reading this book. Much (but not all) of the information in SM100 is also covered in the book in chapters 1,2,3, 9, and 10 (circa 200 pages). I agree with other reviews that it is not a step by step guide, but for that there is free reference material in online knowledge products

This book provides a good strategic overview of Solution Manager's role in a Netweaver installation. As such, it's good to place it on your bosses reading list. However, those looking for detailed "how-to" information to ramp-up are going to be dissapointed. SAP has considerable material available within their Online Knowledge Products related to Solution Manager 4.0 that can help jump start your training and fill in the details...

Good book but very high level

This book is great if you want to know all the functionality available in Solution Manager. Don't expect to see any step by step help to actually implement it. Good for managers.
