This book is different that a lot of the other eBay stuff available. It's more like a value guide. There's a lot of insight into finding cheap prices and bidding to keep prices low in here. I especially like the insight on finding travel bargains and cheap business wear, two of my favorite things to buy on eBay.

I thought I was an expert - what a fun book!

This book gave me tons of new ideas about how to shop on ebay. I didn't know that I could buy such interesting items - Pizza? It's written in an easy to read style, and I actually laughed out loud while I was reading it. Some of the stuff I knew, but I really learned a lot about the different areas of ebay that I hadn't visited before. I also found some new ideas on how to get deals. It's a fun book at a great price, I'm giving it as a holiday gift to all my friends who are always asking me about ebay.

Great idea!

I've been shopping on eBay (as well as Amazon :-) for years. But my mother and mother-in-law are both novices. They're always bugging me with, "What's this eBay thing? What can I get on there? My friend completed her discontinued china set on eBay.." All with the gist of "How can I do this too." As soon as I saw this book was coming out, I picked up two copies of it (mother in laws are rarely great sharers) and gave it to them. Finally! They get what eBay is all about. They know how to set up their user accounts, how the "store" is laid out, how to uncover the best deals and, most importantly for them, how to stay safe when buying on eBay. Now, they're ready to get off and running. In fact, they picked up so much great information, they even taught me a few things (no more staying up late waiting for an auction to end in order to swoop in with the best bid!) This book is great! It's an easy read, and you can jump around to find the points that are most relevant to you. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to become an eBay power shopper.

Good information, annoying format

I'm waiting for a book on LDAP and directory services that believes the importance of these tools is not self-evident. When a book on this subject that persuades the reader to learn about it comes around, I'll buy two copies.

Clayton Donley, who details his involvement and contributions to the field in the introduction, is an expert; he might even be *the* expert. Certainly he's been called upon over time to promote these technologies and so has refined his understanding on many subtle issues. Thus the book has a comfortable way of introducing new terms and explains individual points well. The code examples are concise and clean. There are several instances, however, where the author assumes a point is self-explanatory when it isn't. Often the material doesn't seem to hold together for want of a short sidebar.

Some chapters seem stitched together from a collection of such notes and lack flow as well. The outline form of the chapters seems contrived, sometimes overwhelming the content. There are a fair number of forward references too, which I found very distracting. I had to use the index or google often enough that I got annoyed. A comprehensive glossary would have been really helpful.

With so many short, excerpt-like elements making up a chapter, I found it hard to focus. I wouldn't call it a promising reference either. While it is still one of the better books on LDAP I've come across, the weaknesses of make me think I won't consult it very often.

This has the best explanation on searching I've seen so far; with the Java examples I have already written some sophisticated code to access our LDAP servers. It's thin and to-the-point. I picked this up after reading a glowing recommendation in Dr. Dobb's.

It's for Programmer

If you are a programmer (Perl and Java) and you need to develop an application that needs to talk to LDAP is the right book for you. It's well structured more for a developer's perspective.

It has some concepts and advises on design, implementation and replication, but does not cover the hands-on tips on installing and integrating LDAP servers with various services, such as DNS, NIS, RADIUS, Web server, and etc.

Just what I wanted
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-27
I was looking for a book that covered the basics of LDAP, went through server configuration, schema basics and best practices, and access for a scripting language (e.g. Perl.) I got what I wanted with this book, save the server configuration portion. There was some information on servers, but nothing on how to set one up or get it going. Which makes sense because each server is different, but it would have been nice to see at least one, perhaps OpenLDAP.

Chapters one and two stand out as an ideal introduction to the history of LDAP, it's current structure, and the basics of LDAP schema. Chapter nine, on accessing LDAP operational data, is excellent. The explanations are great, graphics are used effectively, and the code samples are concise.

The only two drawbacks that I can think of are the lack of a server setup and configuration chapter, and the books slight emphasis on Perl as opposed to Java. I personally like the Perl side, but I can see how some folks might prefer Java. There are a lot of Java examples, but there are more examples in Perl.

Top Notch coverage of LDAP

Review Date: 2003-05-20
Just picked this book up and was very pleasantly surprised at the richness of the code examples (lots of good java) as well as the crisp explanations of directory integration concepts and terminology.

I have used some of Clayton Donley's popular LDAP APIs such as PerLDAP on some of my projects and I thought I'd take a chance on a book written by him.

This is the 5th book in my library on LDAP / Directories and I find his book to be the most current and useful. Mr. Donley devotes quite a few pages to the whole issue of LDAP - XML integration and I was able to apply several of his DSML examples to my current work.

Save your money. This book, and its companion, are both written in editorial style, each chapter by a (potentially) different author who each feel that they must fill in the space with more history than substance.

Get the online documentation from Sybase for free and learn something without wasting your time. That is unless you like history.

After having bought this book for my work, I have found my colleagues who take this book for reference often appreciating it's contents, especially for the tips & tricks and well laid out examples.

I recommend all the PowerBuilder/Internet developers to invest in this book. Very affordable with good quality.

I have worked with PB since its inception about 12 years ago. During that time I have purchased everything written about it. This is the worst effort put into print. It is simply a rehash of articles on xml, soap, and internet theory. There is no relationship between PB 9 and this text other than the mention of it by the authors. Save yourself some money and wait or something that actually shows you how to develop internet and distributed applications -- this one does not!!!

Classic BGP and Internet Architecture

This is a really great book on BGP and Internet Architecture. The explanation of BGP at the protocol level is great. More importantly though is its explanation and examples of using eBGP / iBGP with an IGP.

I've heard it criticized as being dated and too Cisco specific. Though it is Cisco specific, it's still very relevant. I would start with this book and read past NANOG presentations on introductory BGP if I wanted to learn how the Internet works.

Excellent guide to unfold the mysteries of BGP

Internet Routing Architectures is considered the BGP4 handbook and rightfully so. I found the overall composition easy to read. Even though the book is aimed at varying levels of expertise, it does not assume any level of knowledge in TCP/IP or routing. It explains all the concepts, from the simplest one right up to the most demanding, in a fluent way. The book works hard not to withhold protocol details and design-oriented information, while at the same time realizing that building general understanding comes first. An in depth look at BGP is supplied here from the theory aspect, if you need actual configurations and commands I suggest also:

This is a good book, let there be no doubt about it. But in my opinion it goes beyond the scope of the 682-661 exam for which purpose I bought it. However, every ISP backbone routing engineer should have this book with him and use it as a dictionary in case of.

This is the best BGP-4 book out there in preparation for the CCIE. Do not waste your money on others this is the one that you need. It takes you from the beginnings of the Internet to the current uses of the protocol. This book is a must have.

A great BGP book, but not the first book for the CCIE
Helpful Votes: 22 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-01
I have always felt that I am part of the small minority that just does not see the beauty of this book if studying for the CCIE. I have, for years, read other's comments on the how Halabi's "Internet Routing Arch" is a `must have', yet I still have not found a similar reason why. While I do feel that the book does (probably) the best job at explaining BGP and how to implement BGP in a Cisco-centric world, I have not discovered the value for the CCIE. I would much rather spend my time with CiscoPress's "Routing TCP/IP" Volume 2, by Jeff Doyle and Jennifer DeHaven Carroll than this book.

One item of concern, there is a noticable amount of trivial errors in this book that can lead to disaster if implemented incorrectly. For example:

Page 106 - "...any traffic that has an origin OR destination that does not belong to the local AS." This clearly should be an AND, not OR.

Page 315 - "You can also specify a PREFIX list..." - I believe this should be a filter list, not a prefix list.

And then there are places where the book is too opinionated - for example - page 206 "Many operators choose to filter dynamically learned defaults to avoid situations in which traffic ends up where it is not supposed to be." I do not feel this is true, and can think of multiple times when not filtering the advertised default route may just end up being the worst option. In fact, I do not feel either configuration is the right configuration to admit or condone, as the wrong configuration can have disastrous effects.

I still have to give this book 4 stars - simply because of it's utilitarian value and overwhelming sense of loyalty given to this book by others. But I don't reach for this book too often.

I give this book 4 pings out of 5:
!!!.!

The "Includes XHTL coverage throughout" claim on the front cover and the publisher's review is misleading. VERY misleading. While the coverage of the book is well thought out and implemented, the author does NOT use xhtml throughout, proper coverage of xhtml is relegated to a single appendix. The xhtml is what I would call "pseudo-covered" in the rest of the book. For example, proper xhtml requires the use of an xml declarative statement and a DOCTYPE, among other things. The author leaves these out in almost every example. He gets some stuff right like the br / for an xhtml break tag and then totally blows the rest. As an example onMouseOver as an event handler will NOT validate as proper xhtml 1.0 Strict or xhtml 1.1 because xhtml requires all tags and attributes to be totally lowercase and yet the author uses it (among numerous other errors.) If you're going to claim something as teaching xhtml, then you should get it right. If you are learning from this book - great. You'll get a very good foundation. But be aware that Mr. Carey is also teaching you some things that are incorrect. Make sure you validate the scripts at the w3c validator as xhtml 1.1 or xhtml 1.0 strict and you'll see what I mean.

Great book for self-learners!!!

I didn't have to learn HTML toward my degree, but I thought it would be a good idea to know it a little. I went to the library and this was the only updated book on HTML and I just picked it. I loved it!!! It is VERY comprehensive, very easy to follow, assignments are interesting. With this book you can study HTML on your own, no need to have an instructor! It has a good introduction to CSS and JavaScript. Main ides are emphasized in tables, lots of helpful illustrations. Very helpful appendices at the end of the book. Recommended!!

Not the best HTML book, but definitely a good one.

Like other reviewers, I've used this book in a community college class, and, like the others, find the book does a good job by itself! The example tutorials are easy to follow (although the examples are kind of drab!), additional reference information is included, and being in color definitely helps. I've used this book as a reference when customizing public layouts for my own use. I would say the book is more of a "valiant attempt" at Javascript, which would require a book in itself. Likewise, I was surprised at how often the CSS section didn't help me with some CSS code I was modifying. And I'll add that, of the web technologies out there, you're better off learning Javascript and PHP than DHTML. Not the best HTML book, but definitely a good one.

Would recommend to a freind

This book was used at the local Community College as the text book for an HTML class. I thought the book did a great job of incorporating what the reader learns into real web pages. Other books just say to make text bold do this, to make a marquee do that, but the don't show you how to put that into practice. The reader can do the cases at the end of every chapter and get a solid understanding of how to really use what they've learned. I know it doesn't cover every tag you can use, but gives you a great understanding of the basics.

Hi

This is to the authors of this book:
Since I bought this book a few months ago and it is a good book for version 6.1

However, with 7.0 available...could you tell about your plans for an upgrade chapter/electronic chapters for those of us who actually need to catch up on 7.0 ?

If a book becomes obsolete (may be not the right word here - but meaning a book deals with older technology) this quickly....would you support your readers?

Thanks
Ravi

If you are new to WebLogic and/or are somewhat mystified by J2EE buy this book. It's a great resource and it is totally worth the money. It helps you get up and running quickly without getting too bogged down in all the BEA documentation. I found the overview of the J2EE technologies very enriching and the demonstration of WebLogic's value proposition and capabilities easy to digest. It also has some very helpful and practical suggestions for working out some thorny issues with WebLogic server such as class loaders, deployment etc. I'm constantly referring to it. The author has really done his homework and has done a valuable service to the WebLogic developer community by writing this book. When I had a question regarding some portions of the text I emailed the author and he responded within hours! He not only helped answer my question but also pointed me in the right direction where I could do additional research. It's nice to see someone stand by their work like that.
