Bart's is legendary known for his contribution to Neural networks and Fuzzy logic. This book though very good, is an advanced level book preferably for a graduate student. Thorough knowledge of Signal analysis and probability would be needed for most part of the book. Advantages of the book is it is, if not the deepest book, on Neural networks and Fuzzy logic, it will surely count as one of the most finest book dealing in the subjects.
Disadvantages: I dont know the reason why Bart has included so many theorem proving solutions like proving why BAM(Bilinear Associative memory) works. Though i commend that he has done a fine work with proving the stability of many learning algorithms. I wont recommend this book to a newbie if opting for Neural networks. Introduction to Neural Networks by Zurada ASIN-0314933913 is better off in teaching all the different Algorithms in depth.

This book earns a 5 star from me because of the indepth coverage it has on the subjects.

This book develops both the theories from the basics. It wonderfully describes the various theories and architectures logically developing the ideas. It has a practical approach and a generalised view without any sort of bias on computer programming alone. Professor Kosko also mathematically describes the underlying mechanism of both neural and fuzzy system. The interdisciplinary examples from various fields show how machine intelligence can be used as proper alternative approaches effectively. I recomend every Electrical and computer engg. to read the book eventhough he/she does not work in the area of m/c intelligence. A must for people in M/C intelligence.

Kosko has two books, with similar titles published in 1991 and 1992(some copies) which together relate fuzzy and neural reasoning on both a mathematical/theoretical plane and the other on a practical plane. How to use neural networks to build fuzzy sets is one of many useful tools that can speed development of a fuzzy project. Also fuzzy rules can be derived using Kosko's methods with a neural net. If you can, acquire both. If neural practice or fuzzy practice is your goal this is the book to use. Strong on practical methods.

If you've ever dreamed of owning your own business but don't want to be tied down to a brick and mortar building, then this is the book for you. Starting an Internet business could not be easier with the help of the information provided. The book starts with interview information from three successful Internet businesses and then follows that with how to get your point across, the various formats for a storefront, required features of the successful storefront, payment options, and levels of e-business. From there it moves to helping determine what is important to you and how to use that to find the right business for you. From there it moves to the profiles of successful businesses. These profiles are complete with how to market the business, startup costs, skills needed, online examples, etc. It finally concludes with information on how to build your site, get it submitted to search engines, e-mail marketing, using links and pretty much just about everything that you need to know in order to get the business up and running.

Susan Sweeney, the owner of an international Internet firm, has produced a very thorough and easy to understand book. Probably the best book available today on starting an Internet business from scratch, it is a highly recommended read.

Poor, outdated, generic, and uninformed: avoid

Review Date: 2008-05-27
I've read about a dozen books on internet businesses, and this is by far the worst. The "101 fill-in-the-blanks" formula in itself is tired, cliche, and overdone: just like this book. If you know NOTHING about the internet or about business, and you have no creativity and just want to pick an idea from the list of 101 things, this books would be marginal. If you have any knowledge of the web, of business, or of what kind of business you want to start, skip this. If you do read it, borrow it from the library first. The book is both too vague and too specific: a difficult thing to achieve, but also a very bad thing to achieve. Part 1 (Doing business online) is so general as to be useless. There are numerous business models and revenue streams that aren't mentioned, and her "4 levels of e-business" are so general that they are useless. She doesn't appear to even know about Google Ad Words, which is scary considering the 2007 copyright date on my copy. (Google doesn't get mentioned either: anyone home?) Anyone who is that ignorant should not be writing books on e-commerce. Part 2 (the 101 Business ideas) is just a collection of random businesses she found online. They are so specific that for most people they are no help at all. Her descriptions aren't very thorough, and she wildly overestimates the amount of money it will take to start one up. For example, if you want to start a movie review site, Sweeney says you will need $5,000 to $10,000 to start! Hello? I've started real brick and mortar businesses with far less tart up cash. That is easily inflated by 2000%, which clearly shows that she hasn't done any of this stuff: she's just found it online and come up with some numbers based on wildly inaccurate assumptions. Her bio says she is " a renowned industry expert on Internet marketing topics," yet her marketing ideas are generic, badly outdated, and incomplete. You can glean a few good ideas from this book, but it is not worth reading the endless, repetitive prose, and you may well pick up some very bad ideas as well. Steer clear of this book. It's retail price of $29.95 is outrageous, and even the discounted Amazon price is too high. But Scott Fox's "Internet Riches" and the Dummies "Starting an Online Business All-In-One Reference." Neither is perfect, but they are far and away better than this dog, and between the two of them you will know what you need to get started for a few dollars, not the 5 figure startup costs this book recommends. There is one good use for this book: if you have competition, send them a gift copy. That will slow them down long enough for you to take over the market. :-)

I didn't find this book helpful at all. It is neither for beginners nor for advanced Labview programmers. If you are somewhere in middle and want to enjoy reading a book about labview like reading a fiction, this may be the right book for you.

If you are really looking for a book which you really need to learn something about Labview, this book is not that one. Continue your search!

This book is good for Labview intermediate programmers. It sort of seems hard for a beginner. It does not go into great depths and tricks of programming in labview. if you are in the learning curve this books adds more to that. It is very limited in certain aspects, like real time programming, and does not explain much about DAQ mx. This book is great for people as reference but I guess there lots more to be added.
It did help me intially as I got into more programming, it would not help me.

Great Book, Especially for the Working Person

For those of you who do not have this book, this book is one of the top Labview books available. It goes very quickly through the basics, and focuses more on building actual applications in Labview. Many pointers on how to maximize resources are through out this book. It saved me many hours of trial and error. The book reads as if an articulate person is speaking to you. Very no nonsense.

For example, there's a comprehensive chapter on actually developing a Labview VI for use. It goes through the requirements, the development (internally and also the user interface) and the release of the VI. Further, it has a nice section on DAQ.

This book is more or less a rehash of the old book, with some upgrades, but for those who don't have the old one, read it's reviews. I wasn't terribly disappointed with the omission of Labview 6i stuff, since the content extended beyond it. You'll be making a good investment in this book.

I've purchased all three editons of Gary Johnson's LabVIEW book and haven't been disappointed yet. This is one of those rare books that lives up to its hype. The writing is clear and engaging, without condescending to the more advanced user. If you're using or learning LabVIEW, check this book out.

E-Mail Virus Protection Handbook is a great book for learning where your email software is vulnerable and how you can defend yourself against malicious code in your email. The authors provide a detailed overview of the various malicious code threats- viruses, worms, trojans, etc. They also discuss a range of email clients from Outlook and Outlook Express to web-based email programs such as Hotmail or Yahoo Mail. For each client they provide some common weaknesses and give detailed explanations of what you can do to protect your computer. Email is one of the most common vectors for malicious code attacks and it is important for everyone to be aware of how to guard against these threats. While slightly dated, I still recommend this book.

The information in this book gave me alot of tools on how to plug up vulnerable points in my Outlook program, Outlook express and all other popular e-mail programs as well as web browser Active X and Java attacks and instant messenger attacks. It also goes into how the hackers get into your system and what the code looks like and how to search for it on your computer if they are stored on your hard drive. Very good book, I highly recommend it!

I was extremely happy to find this book on Amazon, because of all the problems our company has had with e-mail viruses over the past several months. The book adressed almost all of the types of attacks that I've had to deal with, and many others that I've been trying to prevent. It's obvious that the authors know their stuff, and they do an excellent job of communicating their knowledge and experience. Highly recommended!

This book is not well enough written to make a popular book with everyday people, yet the author seems to think it will be; so he 'dumbs down' the issues to 6th grade level. The net result is that the book is so useless as to be embarrassing. Those who want information won't find it here, those who want the excitement from the narrative of a genuine technology struggle will find it dull.

Fundamental Design Philosophy of Telephony and Computer Netw
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-04
Having read this book, I find myself much less mystified by the sometimes-nonsensical operation of computer-like networks over telephone-system infrastructure. Dr. Walters does a superb job of explaining the fundamental thinking behind the 100-year-old telephone-technology evolution and how it contoured itself to meet the required level of service in an optimum fashion. He further explains the quality and type of service required for computer networking and how it significantly differs from that of telephony.

Steve laces the book with sufficient simple examples, humor, and genuine technical detail to make the book an enjoyable learning experience for just about anyone with an interest either telephony or global computer networking. This book is valuable for engineers and a must-read for investors.

Insights in the state of the art in the telephony industry

Review Date: 2003-02-22
Having read The New Telephony in great detail I conclude that this book is a useful, timely and comprehensive guide to the state of the art in the telephony industry. The author has a rare ability to translate complex problems and concepts into easy to understand descriptions that highlight the essence of the issues. He walks the reader through the key elements and developments of both traditional telephone networks and the Internet and builds on this to contrast the emerging "new" telephony with that of traditional "old" telephone networks and their operators. Refreshingly, this is not just a book about technical communication protocols and standards. The book also highlights the importance of operational issues, wiring, billing, regulatory, reliability, economics, inertia and competitive drivers. It provides the reader not only with an understanding of the key technologies but also with an appreciation of the drivers that motivate service providers to apply these technologies in their networks. The book then contrasts different views and scenarios on how the New Telephony may take shape in the market place. As the Foreword by Lucky concludes "It is rare that these [different] views come together in one book, but here they do, for all of us to ponder and appreciate".

The business of telephony. Best introduction.

Voice telephony remains the 900 pound gorilla of the networking business. The Internet
and other data services may exceed voice by volume but they are way back in the pack
when it comes to revenue. Voice telephony represents a $800 Billion business worldwide
while all of the Internet and other data communications represents only about $200 Billion.
This is the golden goose that cisco, Juniper and all of the proponents of Voice over IP have
their sights set on. It is also the cash cow that ATT, Lucent, Nortel and the Baby Bells
are entrenched to defend. This book gives a very readable introduction to the business and
policy issues involved in this network convergence.

Anyone who would like to understand the telephony business in both its classical TDM guise
and int eh new clothes of voice over IP would do well to read this timely book. There is just
enough technology background here to prepare non-engineers to understand the business
and policy issues surronding VoIP. Traditional telephony is presented along with the Internet
and it's associated protocols. The author then introduces the technologies of voice over IP
and releated technologies intended to enable the Internet to deliver a quality of service
adequate to carry voice. The complex puzzle of Diffserv and MPLS, RSVP, RTP and RTCP
are all laid out in their proper place and relation along with H.323, MEGACO and SIP.

After giving us a thorough introduction to the technology Walters gets down to the business
issues of building the new telephony including an exploration of six scenarios of possible
futures for the industry. The final chapter looks at the effects of the economic downturn that
has been plaguing the entire industry for the past two years as well as the repurcussions
of the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington.

If you want to study the bits and bytes of VoIP protocols then this is not the book for you.
(For that read Carrier Grade Voice over IP) but if you want to understand the upheaval
convulsing the communications industry the there is no better or more timely book.

Get to Know What Constitutes Current Telephony, and the Why
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-01
I am prompted by Pete's review of The New Telephony to respond. This is not a novel nor is it meant to be exciting. It is a thoughtful technical book. I am happy to hear the 6th grade students in NSW Australia might find the ideas presented in this book as fitting to their level of education. If this were truly so it would shame our graduate students for they might have to struggle with some of the ideas and concepts included in this book. Dr. Walters does take pains to try and make these complex transmission concepts, standards and methods clear and understandable. He blends both the science and the engineering showing not only the how but the why it must be so. To summarize the current state of telephony is a difficult task because of the broad range of topics entering into every consideration. Dr. Walters develops the ideas and thoughts so that the current state of telephony makes sense...at least as to its reasons for being so.

This book, in my estimation is a must read for anyone currently concerned with almost any aspect of telephony.

First off, I have a brick and mortar business, and I'm contemplating going online with it. I browsed several books on the subject of Ebay selling, and chose this one - I'm glad I did. Several books are about Ebay generally - how to buy AND sell. Most have general advise about business - bookkeeping, inventory. When you take those factors into consideration, some of them only have a quarter of the book about selling, and then it's too general, anyway. This one has meat - he gets down to the details of how to set it all up effectively. Setting up the actual site, promotion, some run down on the Ebay tools and features. He also has several featured sellers, and profiles of them and how they made it happen, and quite a few URLs of contacts for research and tools. The word "Tricks" is actually just a device to lay out major thoughts - he doesn't pretend they are tricks, just good practice. Good book....
