Clarity at Last!

Like many of the acronyms in use today, SOA is quickly becoming so broadly used that it is difficult to understand the real role of SOA, the impact on legacy platforms and the realization of true return on investment.

This book avoids focusing on the generalities and re-definitions found in most SOA books and heads straight at the heart of and challenges addressed by SOA. The book gives superb treatments of service modeling and how to maximize reuse of existing silo based services, decomposition of silos and implementation of new reusable components.

But, even more critical to the reader and SOA implementor, the book provides the best and most useful information on SOA governance that I have seen in any of the SOA books out there. Like all models oriented towards reuse, SOA models without proper governance can quickly devolve back into a silo structure negating the value of SOA. This book provides a clear path towards delivering the benefits of SOA in conjunction with implementing an evolving SOA governance model.

Anyone who wants to understand the value of SOA, the challenges of deployment and a means of delivering it while avoiding the risks of "big bang" deployment should definitely read this book.

This book contains much valuable information, but I see little that is not readily available on the web. Just do some searching and you can find this information quickly enough. If you don't mind paying for information that is available for free, then buy this book. Look at sites like zapthink, searchsoa.com, soa-consortium.org. Also look at a book named "An Implementor's Guide to Service Oriented Architecture - Getting It Right" and authors like Thomas Erl.

Finally one that hits the nail!

There has been books in the market on the topic of SOA, in numbers. Many of them quickly get into the quagmire of either keeping it too abstract and talk about just business aspects and their benefits or going to the other extreme and treating just the technology aspects of SOA.

'Executing SOA - A Practical Guide for the Service Oriented Architect' is a revealing, startling and supremely practical treatise on this topic of SOA. The first great point about this book is that it does not go into too much of the basics of SOA as a concept; its definitions; terminologies etc. It provides just an introductory chapter on its history and more significanly why SOA matters more and more in today's world of business and IT.

The topic of SOA Governance has not been treated so well if not, at all, in the books that try to fill up the shelf. An entire chapter is dedicated to this topic! The chapter focusses on how business and IT alignment is enabled and empowered by SOA Governance and demonstrates how SOA Governance can and should be used as an SOA Strategy to realistically align IT initiatives with the business drivers and goals of the enterprise. It provides a splendid treatment on how to structure the organization; with its roles and responsibilities and the management of power so that SOA Governance can be implemented as a mainstream SOA discipline inside an enterprise. What I found most useful was the way the authors provided a prescriptive checklist of the various components of SOA Governance and what to execute to make each component be executed upon.

SOA introduces a new architecture paradigm to IT. Rational Unified Process, as a methodology to perform software lifecycle development saw the hole in its existing process around how a typical SOA project should be executed. They used SOMA as a service oriented modeling and architecture method and came up with their new version of RUP called RUP-SOMA. This book is the first of its kind that dedicates an entire chapter in defining to its reader what RUP-SOMA is and more importantly provides step by step guidance on how each phase of the service oriented methodology should be executed in a real world project. I not only find this chapter as a first of a kind in the industry but also am startled by the way the authors have treated the subject and brought it to the reader. One can easily use some very basic and common sense to create a project plan to execute on an SOA project based on the sheer merit that this chapter brings to the table.

Each other chapter focusses on a specific discipline of how to take SOA into a real world project engagement but the topics are kept so well aligned, integrated and standalone that the reader can either focus on one single chapter and execute on it or put them all together and be the guru in your company! The chapter on 'Realization of Services' is a master art that demonstrates how you can implement the RUP-SOMA methodology using the present day products and technologies that are available in the market.

In short, I consider this book as an eye-opening treatment of the subject of SOA and it keeps itself very true to its title i.e. it provides the reader with enough arms and ammunition to go execute successfully on a real-world and practical SOA project.

Thank you authors - now I know why IBM is the best and has the greatest share in the SOA market!

The tittle of this book says it all and it's not kidding . I have an associate degree in art in Internet Services Technology and I code by hand using a variety of languages such as VB.NET ,C#, Actionscript, etc ,and own a lot of programming books ,but I write my code using Dreamweaver as a tool and the The Missing Manual as a resource. I have found information in this book that is not even in advanced dedicated programming manuals so it is allways the first book that I grab when I get stuck. My personal website photo gallery:http://www.sigmacumlaude.com was ,coded using a combination of asp.net and Flash MX Pro. The process was much facilitated by referencing The Missing Manual and I recomend it to any web programmer of any level .

I use Dreamweaver MX to create interactive training web sites for a government agency. When I first started learning Dreamweaver MX, I bought three reference books. I don't even look at the other two books now. This is the one that sits on my desk at all times. I've never had a problem that I haven't been able to find the solution to with the help of this book.

I highly recommend it.

Hands down this is the best book for learning Dreamweaver. This author is very informative and his style is very encouraging to the new user who may be daunted by the sheer complexity that Dreamweaver can possess.

Using Dreamweaver MX 2004, I expected this book to be somewhat outdated. Nevertheless, I had a great time learning how to use Dreamweaver since there are very few major differences between MX 2004 and MX.

Well-written, Comprehensive, Simply the Best

I've had a bit of experience with Dreamweaver, but this book rounded out my education. It contains all the information I needed (and more), has clear & well-written text, and an excellent structure that allowed me to access the information very quickly (they even made the binding in such a way that the pages lie flat). Not only is book accessible, but it continues to be a valuable resource on my bookshelf. As others have mentioned, one of the great things about this book is the fact that it also talks about Dreamweaver's limitations; options (such as frames) that could lead to problems later on. By the time I've gone through computer manuals, I usually riddle them with post-its in an effort to organize the information; this book is so well thought-out that so far I haven't needed to.

Earlier I'd bought the Visual Quickstart Guide's Dreamweaver MX manual (filled with post-it tabs in response to poor organization and because the information was so difficult to extract), but ever since I bought the McFarland book, the Quickstart Guide been collecting dust.

I used this book in 2001 to learn XML and it was great then.

In the last week I have been looking at transforming xml on the client. A lot of designs transform on the server, but I really wanted to investigate a full xml approach. This shows you how to take an xml feed and use a client generated file ( XSLT or HTML ) to transform that data into a dynamic web page. Unfortunately this only works on IE, but the book explains how to do this easily.

Great Intro To XML

I had never used XML for anything, but I knew it had become very important in today's world. I was a little hesitant at first, since some MS Press books I'd read in the past were very dry and technical. To the contrary, however, this book is very well written with easy-to-understand examples. It provided me, someone who knew nothing of XML, with a very gentle introduction to the subject matter. It's very readable and you'll walk away from it with a very strong foundational knowledge of XML.

Perfect first step for beginners.

If you don't know anything about XML (like me two years ago), this is the first book that you should read. This book contains clear explanations backed by good samples and "step-by-step" exercises. You don't have to read the whole book to be efficient when using XML in your project. I only read the first few charters and I already began to code XML. If I can do it, so can you.

Step by Step XML Excellent Book!

I purchased this book in hopes it would clear some things up as I took XML as a college crash class. This is an excellent starting point for those wanting to learn XML or anyone needing more explanation. The terms and procedures are explained so that you understand how and what with out going into a lot of theory. The examples are wonderful, and unlike some books, so far all the code works. It is easy to understand and it makes sense and doesn't leaving you wondering what was just said.
I give this book a thumbs up!

This book is a great start to the language of XML! The author makes a lot of HTML references, but a beginner could probably grasp it. He begins with the basics and history to give the reader an great understanding of what they are about to get in to. In the first few chapters, you have mastered the basics of XML!! I highly reccomend this book! It goes slow enough for those who may get confused, but keep up the pace for those who get it quickly!

Some of the explanations that I thought was very good was on VLSM and NAT. His explanations of CHAP is the first time I really understood how it worked and I have certifications in Network+, and Security+. I don't think there was enough practice problems on subnetting. The simulator exercises were very good, I don't think I would have passed the test without them.

I also purchased 2 other books but this one seems to hit all the areas that I have been studying at college. I really recommend it.

I used this book, Transcender practice tests, and test king Q & A's to pass the CCNA test. This book had very concise explanations. The author did a great job of keeping the material moving and organizing the information. One of the things I was most impressed with was the author's explanation of subnetting. I have had several classes and I could never figure out subnetting. After reading this book, I can subnet all day long. This book was one of the best I have used for passing a test. The CD comes with a goof flash card program and Boson Sim Software as well.

Stern's popularity more than justifies such a volume, but most of the sites contained within the tome are either no longer linked or made up of address strings so long as to be ungainly. It's a great idea for a book, but would have made a better website. Also lacks a lot of background of the show that other books have in spades.

For fans, but few others.

I bought this book looking for helpful information to fill in the gaps where my MBA didn't go into detail. However, I found it to be simply a giant ad for Microsoft products. I suppose if you planned on using nothing but Microsoft Office to run your eBusiness it might help, but I'm not sure how well that would work. Mostly the book just refers you to the Help sections and the Microsoft website for further information, so save the money and just go directly to those resources. If you are looking for good, solid information or resources for beginning a new eBusiness or expanding a current one, this is not the book for you.

Finally, a book that offers real-world information aimed at running a business rather than just building a website. Every chapter is shot-through with practical techniques for managing a sustainable, profitable venture. The author obviously has extensive experience. She gives great examples and tips and she doesn't sugar-coat the realities. She mentions Micorosft technologies, but really, this book is longer on real business information than anything else. Go for it. This book is a real gem.

JBoss- Seam

Review Date: 2008-08-19
Very good book. It gives good knowledge about how to write
applications in this framework. Many working examples are also
appreciated.

In the beginning authors explain what is Seam, and it is understood,
as Seam is much different than any other framework with similar
functionality. Seam is not meant for using it as "white box". It is
rather "black box", designed for just using it, without knowing inside
details. Because of this debugging Seam code is tedious task, and in
fact unnecessary. There is chapter in the book explaining how to use
debugging mechanism built in Seam, so called "debug pages". One can
check session state, stacktrace or JSF components tree. Very helpful
for anyone writing web applications in this framework.

There is also chapter about business processes and business rules.
Yes, this is also built in Seam. As an example in the book is ticket
system. User logs in, lists tasks and assigns them to herself.
Developer does not need to care about storing users tasks in database,
it is enough to set component scope to BUSINESS_PROCESS. This is very
interesting functionality, and although it is explained quite well in
the book, I would like it to be explained even better.

There is good testing support in Seam and this is also well described
in the book. Seam provides tools to do in tests what is normally done
by container, like dependency injection, database and transactions
mocking etc.

Another chapter is about running Seam applications on non-ejb3
containers (like Tomcat).

The book covers many topics, not only about Seam itself, but also
about how to use Seam, test, how to deploy applications on non-seam
container, how to connect to another than default database etc. The
book is targeted for real users, for people working with the
framework.

What I miss is more insight into how Seam internally works. Such
knowledge is not necessary to write working apps, but I just like to
know such things.

Some knowledge about JSF and EJB3 is also very useful when reading
this book. I would like some of this stuff explained, but on the other
hand it is book about Seam not about EJB3/JSF.

I think reading this book is very good for someone who wants to write
applications in Seam, even advanced ones. Seam is interesting
technology, much different than pure JSF+EJB3, and it's worth
learning, even for someone not using it at work, just to see new
possibilities.

Very good introduction to Seam and what WebApp dev should be!

It's not a cookbook with ready made recipes. It gives a shallow but complete overview of the Seam framework features. That is important because if you don't know it exists you will never try to use it. Examples: XHTML validation tags for Hibernate, conversation state, and much more.

It's a must read to get a good start with Seam and to learn what WebApp development should have been from the beginning.

Excellent book on seam

Its a great book.. It difficult to learn Seam without this book.
It may be slightly dated, with Seam 2.0 coming out recently.
But per the author, there are not significant changes in the code
ie mainly config changes.
(eg they recommend JPA with tomcat instead of embedded server option
with tomcat)

Seam(and specifically seam-gen) still has some significant bugs/issues
to iron out(but workaround exists).

Too short

Compared to other computer books this book is to shallow and does not cover the depths of Seam. I would like a more continous example throughout the book instead of a collection of small, rather trivial examples.

Good for Learning, Not as Good for Reference

This is a very good book for learning about SEAM, a web framework that I would consider one of the best for its simplicity and power. However, what this book is best at is teaching you the basics of SEAM (though is some areas, such as stateful navigation rules, it doesn't go deep enough).

Where this book lacks most is as a reference book. The reason for this is that many concepts are introduced well before the chapters that talk about them. When looking back at these concepts, I find myself having to find the first place the concept is introduced because the chapter about that assumes that you have read the earlier introduction.

Overall this is a good book for learning the basics of SEAM. However, it is not a good in-depth reference. Nevertheless, SEAM is an excellent technology and there are not yet many good books on it. This book will bring you up to speed on SEAM pretty quickly so I still recommend it.
