A simple pattern with lovely variations

I found this in my local library and decided I had to buy it... <br /> <br />The author starts with a very basic/simple beanie pattern on circular/double pointed needles (no seams!) and then shows variations. <br /> <br />The wool is mostly Rowan cottons however beanies are quite forgiving and many wools work just as well if you watch your tension square; I have knitted the dropped-daisy in a fluffy wool, and a striped beanie in a light pure wool. <br /> <br />What I would like to know before buying this book: <br />It is a US book - US tension gauge, inches and US needle sizes. <br />The patterns are beginner to intermediate - there is nothing inately difficult or challenging with these patterns. <br />The patterns are (mostly) in sizes newborn to 2yrs+. Nothing bigger. <br />Most of the pattern variations are made with colour changes and toppers. <br />The pictures are gorgeous and the patterns work! <br />There are a few errors in the patterns that are pretty easy to work around, and with minor modifications you can vary the final look to your own taste, eg the dropped daisy hat in many on the customer images has quite small petals and a very long stem (by pattern) but can be easily changed to suit yourself. <br />There are quite a few patterns; I would make most of them, and have made 5 of them in the last 4 weeks. <br /> <br />Addendum: I made the dropped daisy hat in a soft pink wool with a lemon daisy for my 2+ yo. First off, she refuses to remove it - it goes on when she gets up and comes off only to sleep. Secondly it was easy to make but looks so effective. And thirdly, we get compliments everywhere we go. I have never had this happen before - everyone we meet says "gorgeous hat", "love the hat", etc. What more can you want? Great for Beginners, Inspirational for the more experienced

For beginners, I would definitely recommend to buy this book before diving into the Itty Bitty Nursery as the author explains all the basic skills and supplies needed to complete the projects. Clear instructions along with video from Susan Anderson's Blog. The spiral-bound book helps keep the pages open so you can refer back while you knit your project. The hats are so adorable and knit up quickly (thank goodness babies are small). They make great gifts. Fun for Junie B. fans

For Adventurous Beginners

As a beginning knitter, this was just what I needed when my sweetie requested a pair of mittens. How was I to jump from the dishcloths that I had been making to more complicated items? Finally, a book for me . . .

I'm an advanced beginning knitter, ready to progress beyond scarves and caps. The book has templates for those things, as well as socks, mittens, vests, and pullovers. I want to knit a sweater, but the patterns I'd found before didn't work out for me. I like the fact that this one doesn't get into which yarn or needle size to use, it just shows you what to do for whichever gauge you choose to work with. You don't have to choose $200 yarn to make a basic vest. <br /> <br />With the different gauge instructions in the book, you can actually take measurements and fit something to the person you're making it for. Since I'm not familiar with garment construction (haven't sewn before), this allows me to make just a basic sweater to get used to doing that. When I get good at that, then I can experiment, maybe use a finer gauge and some different colors, design my own. Good beginner's guide

I bought two Metal Clay books and liked this one better. Good sensible down to earth instructions and information. Perhaps a little too much on combining polymer clay in projects- but this seems to be common in Metal Clay books. <br /> <br />There was one problem - otherwise I would have awarded it 5 stars. The DVD does not work optimally and it is really quite annoying to have to stop and start it frequently when it stalls in the middle of a section. However, I have managed to see most of it. <br /> <br />The projects are interesting and illustrate a number of useful basic technical points. Silly Rabbit! This book is for kids!

Just in case you didn't understand, let me say at the outset, this book was written and is obviously intended for kids. Boys, most likely, and under the age of 10 or 11 is about right. <br /> <br />For THAT audience, this book is actually quite interesting. If you have a Ph.D. in physics, don't buy it. And if you considered the idea, how did you get that Ph.D., again? <br /> <br />Not to be a smarty, or anything, but I'm really surprised at readers trashing this book because it's not useful. The book is meant to put kids into the discovery mode, to see capabilities in things they might not otherwise have seen, to think outside the box, as it were. <br /> <br />And while not all the suggestions here provide the least bit of interest to an adult, I have to wonder why anyone would have bought this book expecting to get a Master's Degree in Science from it. Geez, the title alone is a dead giveaway. <br /> <br />If this book were published by Brown Paper School, a la The Book of Think: Or, How to Solve a Problem Twice Your Size, it would have five stars from everyone. And apart from the marketing, which should put "for kids" or something like on the cover, the book deserves 5 stars. <br /> <br />Personally, while I've no intention of running the experiment, I found it interesting to read about how to extract drinking water from a plant. Lots of ideas in this one

Without a question Claudine gives great advice and instruction in this book. Lots of ideas for scrapbooking, collage and just crafty folks. A Beginner can create these FANTASTIC DESIGNS

Love the history...love the simplicity...love the book! For a long time I ignored this book on the selves, then I picked it up to look inside. I couldn't put it down. The author draws you in with the fasinating history of kimonos and then with simple designs shows you how to create these beautiful, wearable works-of-art. I'm currently making the one shown on the cover. I love the way it flows. The author brings a sense of Japanese respect for nature in the stitch and design. Before you buy the yarn, read this review!

I rate the book high because of the ideas. Now that I have tried to do a few, I would give it 3 stars, but the system won't let me edit that. <br /> <br />I knit by hand and with machines. This book is easily adapted to machine knitting. The author provides a basic platform from which to create. I would say that the projects rank on the level with knitting an afghan, so if a person is not up to that level, best start elsewhere. The knitting itself is quite easy on most all patterns. BUT, I am on my third pattern and had to rip everything out and do my own design. <br /> <br />The problem is that if you are not using her yarn, the gauge is a nightmare. If you want the kimono to fit, you have to do some serious gauge knitting. I always knit to gauge, so have to say that has been a problem for me. I ended up just using her ideas and designing my own. It was easier for me (an advanced knitter) than fooling around with her gauge. <br /> <br />I'd like to read reviews from people who have actually done some of these patterns rather than ones who are raving about the beautiful ideas and pictures! This book is very inspirational! The photos are beautiful and the instructions are very clear. I haven't yet made anything, but I know there will be a learning curve. 300 pages of boring

I recently purchaced this book, and i was very disappointed. I have some of the other Creating Keepsakes books, such as the "Scrapbooks tips" and "Scrapbooking Family heritage" (I'd give all of them 5 stars). But, the Creating Keepsakes Encyclopedia has half the images and examples as the other books. After about 1/2 an hour of reading through it I was done for good; whereas with the other books every time I open them I see something new that I didn't notice before. I was extremely disappointed with this book. I would not recommend it to anyone. And it shouldn't be called an "encyclopedia"-it only explains the MOST BASIC of scrapbooking techniques. I mean, it takes 4 pages just to show you how to tear paper!!! PLEASE don't waist your money on this-instead, try some of the other "Creating Keepsakes" books. This one is the worst of the bunch.
