If you want to make better food choices this is a good book to look into. Especially if you eat out for the majority of your meals but haven't paid attention to fat and calories that you ingest. Warning -- You may be horrified to discover what you've been pumping into your body.

If you aren't ready to make changes avoid this book. Cheeseburgers weighing in at 1,000 calories at a pop followed by a coffee smoothie at over 500 could really rain on your parade. Want to know how much of your daily fat count/calorie count would be exhausted by half an onion blossom? If you do, it's there in full color.

Those who want to make better food choices overall might want to consider looking a deeper into nutritional choices in additional books like those covering the glycemic index, healthy fats and how to introduce more plants and get away from processed. But this is a great resource for someone who has to eat out a lot or prefers to buy prepackaged foods yet wants to make better choices. The details of choices are not complete, mostly calories and fat counts with occasional additional counts such as sodium and whether an item contains trans fat or high fructose corn syrup.

Full of eye catching photos and colors with details that break down major restaurant chains best and worst menu choices. A very helpful guide on decoding menu items at major types of restaurants is included that is worth the purchase price. Other guides give details on best and worst items at your grocery store. Some small color boxes are difficult to read because of lack of color contrast and small print.

This book is packed full of surprising information about how many calories we can consume without realizing it! It is also a good reference book to take along with you in the car - or on a trip - just so you don't get hooked into a high-calorie situation when you need a quick meal at a restaurant. I also bought "Eat This Not That FOR KIDS," which also opened my eyes about the foods I USED TO GIVE to my 3-year old daughter!

The South Beach Diet is a diet that helps you make good choices and helps you with portion control. I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about changing eating habits to lose weight as well as eating healthier. There are plenty of new and interesting menus in this book to keep you from becoming bored with the food. It can be tweaked to just about any health issues you may have, so don't think you can use that as an excuse. Jump on board and become healthier now.

It's not so much the book, but the diet. The book is an easy read that answers all your questions about the diet. Also I found the exercise program very helpful. As a construction worker and a parent on the go all the time I found the meals were hard to prepare. You need to adapt to the foods allowed and not allowed group. Overall...it works. I have been on this diet for one month and have lost over 20 lbs. And I find that I am very seldom hungry.

VERY SUCCESSFUL for my very stubborn husband!

THIS WORKED! My husband did it and lost a lot of weight (about 25 pounds, I think). The thing that impressed me is that he was able to EAT while he was on the diet. My husband LOVES FOOD. Seriously. He loves to think about food, he loves to make food, he loves to look at food and he loves to EAT. If he can do this diet and STILL ENJOY FOOD (which he did), then anyone can.

Only problem: when he doesn't stick to it, he gains weight back very quickly. It needs to be a lifestyle choice and not something that you do for just one month.

When I started this book I was really just looking for a diet book, and the clever title and chic illustration caught my eye. I was not a vegan, and had NO intention of becoming vegan, when I started reading, and had carefully avoided animal rights literature for quite some time. After reading this book I made a decision to completely overhaul my life, this included going vegan, getting rid of all my nasty addictions (mostly alcohol, caffeine, cheese, and sugar), leaving a bad relationship that was going on for too long, practicing yoga, etc. I have lost 35 pounds so far (and counting), I am healther, I am happier, and I feel generally amazing. I am really glad I was able to read this book before I heard what its advice entailed, I am sure if I had realized beforehand I would have walked on past and missed something really special.

Some fun..but cant to be taken too seriously

On pg. 53, the author writes "We encourage you to think for yourself and make your own decision". This line reflects why I would not recommend this read. the women who wrote this leave no room for you to form your own decision on their radical rules to becoming a skinny b*tch

The book basically bashes anyone who eats meat, dairy, and white bread. ok, who doesnt eat those things from time to time? its unrealistic and a good deal of the suggestions aren't backed up by credible sources (who cares is Dr. Andrew Weil says drink soy milk... who the heck is he?!!?)

Its a lighthearted read that appeals to the fashionista, jet setting type of person. and there are some good food recommendations for vegan types.

The book has some solid information, but some of the information is taken to the extreme or overgeneralized.

In general, some good considerations. I wouldn't accept the all or nothing mentality as it doesn't fit into real life business traveler needs.

the title is a misnomer. buyers could pick up the book thinking they'll be getting a round of lifestyle and nutrition tips. instead they get two women expressing their very strong views about the state of the american food industry. and while their facts are valid, there are bits and pieces that they don't identify as the minuses to being vegan... and there are more than a few.

Everyone needs to calm down. They're writing style is not for everyone but happens to be one of my favorite things about the book. I like straight forward sassy women. I think it's great. But I also take it with a grain of salt. They do base their claims on plenty of scientific studies and research. It's all in the back of the book if you want to check it out. I now have the knowledge of what goes on in the meat, dairy, and other food industries and I will make smarter, organic, free-range, etc. decisions, or cut back on certain things. It is very informative, and I'm glad to know what these industries would rather the public not know. But I'm not giving up cheese or adopting their plan verbatim. What I really like about it is that it's not a diet. It's a lifestyle change in eating habits. As a health educator I know (and I teach others) that diets do not work, but making healthy permanent change does. I enjoyed the book tremendously, but I would never recommend it to my mother (even though she would agree with all of their claims) or some other old fashioned, easily shocked person because of their straight talk. Some people just can't handle it.

Michael Pollan's sage advice, "Eat Food. Not too much. Mostly plants," is now what I tell my patients who ask me about losing weight. Its embarrassing that most medical schools offer less than a day of education to nutrition when patients are constantly concerned with their food habits-- and for good reason. Pollan has put together the ultimate book on eating in America. This is what your doctor should be telling you.

His sagely and researched approach to the American national food disorder should be mandatory for all of us-- the chronic dieters, the fast food lovers, and those of us wondering which fats are the good ones these days.

The icing on the refined-sugars cake is that Michael Pollan, while educating, is also absolutely fascinating.

I saw this book featured on Nightline, and I was intrigued by some of the talking points such as only shopping on the outside of the grocery store. As an endurance athlete, I know I need to be more cerebral about what food I am putting into my body, so I thought this book would help. I also approached this book with some reservations, as I consider my political leanings conservative, and I am not a vegetarian. Instead of getting a lot of left-wing meat-eater-hating nonsense, this book quite nicely lays out the problems of consuming processed food. After reading it, I personally have considered not just what foods I consume, but how I go about purchasing it, preparing it, and savoring it, as well. The discussion concerning the necessity of a balanced diet (i.e., not cutting carbs or fat out of your diet) is enlightening. This book debunks everything modern food companies market as healthy and nutritious- example- truly healthy food doesn't have an advertising budget, avoid foods that claim to be healthy! Overall, this book was very enlightening. If you care about the health of your family or yourself, you need to read this book. There's no hidden agenda here, other than educating a very misled American public about what healthy eating really means.

It's a pretty good book, but doesn't hit hard enough. If it really told the whole story, most readers would really take a step back and reevaluate whether or not supermarket food is okay to eat. He points out that 1982 marked a turning point in the US. Before that, most supermarket food would be considered food. After 1982, food became loaded with adulterants, and really can not be called food. If most food on the shelves toady were subject to the "imitation food" labeling law that was repealed in 1973, most everything today would be labeled "imitation". Certainly anything sold by General Mills, Kraft, Nestle, and the other big processors would be labeled imitation. They do not have any products that could ahve avoided the imitation label. That is why the law was repealed, so that they could start adulerating food, e.g. removing the nutrients, selling them off separately for profit, then adding in synthetic nutrients, which are very cheap to manufacture. Nearly all supermarket food is now imitation. He does point out, that most of our food is made from corn, soy. But he fails to point out that all artificial colors, and most artifical flavors, sweeteners, and preservatives are made from by-prodcuts of petroleum refineries. Here is how artificial colors are made (this applies to all colors with the prefix FD&C: Benzene (a very toxic solvent)is the by-product of refining crude oil into other products such as diesel and gasoline. Sulfuric acid and Nitric acid is added to the benzene to form nitrobenzene. This is then turned into aniline. Aniline is extremely toxic, and is the building block for all artificial colors. And this is not the worst thing that is put in food. I really wish he would have discussed this issue. He does say that 2/3 of all calories in the US come from 4 plants: wheat, corn, soy, and rice. This should really concern us, as at no other time in history have human eaten so much grain and soybeans, and the fact that it is so highly processed makes it that much worse.

I loved this book!

It takes a different perspective from Pollan's "Omnivore's Dilemna". Here, Pollan is principally concerned about eating from a perspective of personal health/nutrition. Fortunately, the conclusion that he comes to is that someone who is thoughtful about their eating will make many of the same decisions whether their starting point is ecology, environment, personal health (and I'd add to the list labor rights and animal rights, much of the time). Yes, between all these different viewpoints, there are A FEW places where advocates might disagree, but it seems that a thoughtful eater will benefit all of these areas in general.

This is a watered down version of Omnivore's Dilemma with the same message (eat locally, eat more plants, etc.). The message is good, and the argument is solid, but this slim volume is not nearly the great achievement that The Omnivore's Dilemma was.

I purchased this book online on August 5. As of today September 7, I still have not received it. I'd love to review the product, but more to the point, I'd like to see the product sometime this year. I've checked the status and apparently it hasn't been shipped yet, even though at the time of purchase I was told it would be shipped shortly. Additionally, I have had no communication about it from the vendor. I'll NEVER buy a used book from Amazon again. K. Hicks

Fantasic book! Just like info on dontbeabrownapple.com for cellular health. Staying younger is about protecting our cells and keeping them healthy. So many good things in this book to know. The other important part is supplementing with high quality supplements such as 5 star rated ones in the Nutritional Guide for Supplements by Lyle MacWilliam. It makes a big difference what we take on top of what we eat for antioxidant protection, and getting enough exercise daily. Thank you Dr. Oz for helping spread the word about the importance of our health!

This book describes an amazing way of thinking about weight control for your kids. Not necessarily by giving up eating out, but learning to make better food choices both at home and at restaurants. The author's point out that making smart food choices is all about having the knowledge. This book can help you to help your children make better choices.

This book definitely gives you the inside look at the nutritional value of foods in your child's favorite eating joints as well as advice on what to choose when they are facing a variety of options.

I plan on keeping this copy handy for both my shopping trips and at restaurants. It is a great reference. And it's not just for kids...this book helps me as well!

This book is terrific like the adult version. It is a great help for kids to look for themselves at how to make wiser choices without just hearing from their parents. Also, many people are on the run and don't take the time to read labels, so this is helpful to carry with you to make wiser choices. Carry it in the car so your child can choose before you order fast food or restaurant food. Kids love to make their own choices and they feel good about themselves when you trust them to make a wise choice. The price is right for something that can help cut calories with small incremental changes.

This book is amazing. I thought I knew something about nutrition, but this takes it to a whole new, shocking level. The best part, the pictures make it easy for my 5 year old son to understand what's healthy, what's not. A cereal that he loves is on the "NOT" page-- he refused to eat it. I felt guilty for even offering (I swear, I didn't know.... the sugar looked okay compared to the others... there was fiber... ).

Loved it, loved it, loved it. They should give it out at the hospitals before handing you the baby!

The only down side-- you will feel horribly guilty for a few days.

Readers familiar with the popular Eat This Not That!: Thousands of Simple Food Swaps That Can Save You 10, 20, 30 Pounds-or More! will find this book similar in format- except this time the content is aimed at kids.

The book consists of seven chapters. Here's a brief rundown of what you can expect from each:

-Chapter 1 covers "8 rules of kid's nutrition" which includes such advice as "never skip breakfast" and "snack with a purpose"

-Chapter 2 discusses choosing the right foods at fast food restaurants such as Arby's or Applebees

-Chapter 3 talks about "menu decoding". Since the book can't cover every restaurant you'll ever eat at, it teaches the reader how to read a typical menu- what to look for, what choices to make. It does this by going over general menus of Chinese restaurants, Mexican restaurants, etc.

-Chapter 4 goes over making proper buying choices at restaurants. Here the reader is taught how to read labels.

-Chapter 5 covers eating at schools, which means, of course, the school cafeteria. Vending machines choices are also included because most schools (unfortunately) have them.

-Chapter 6 discusses eating at home. A nice touch here is the sample menus and recipes.

And last but not least, Chapter 7 talks about exercise. Included are sample activities to keep your kids fit. I personally suggest trying a pedometer- kids like to fiddle with them and counting steps is fun too.

All-in-all, I found this to be a great little book and actually quite fun to read with its many pictures. With good knowledge in hand, the only other obstacle a parent faces is getting their kids motivated to carry out the advice in the book.

This is an unfortunate attempt to exploit the panic and fear regarding childhood vaccinations. The author has done no scientific studies himself and selectively references studies that are poorly done or taken out of context. He also suggests complicated vaccination schedules that have not been researched to demonstrate their efficacy or lack thereof. I suggest every physician who is struggling with parents refusing to protect their children by vaccination read this book (get a used copy) in order to counter Dr. Sears arguments. The CDC and AAP have much better information on their websites regarding vaccines, and I refer parents to those sites for information as well as handing out a comprehensive information booklet to them. This is yet another economic exploitation of the Lunatic Fringe.

This is a great book because it is neither for vaccines nor against them-it just presents as much information as possible and leads the reader to his or her own conclusion. Now I feel a bit educated on the issue when my son's pediatrician presents his "convincing" side of the story (pro- all vaccines).

The most helpful parts of the book are Dr. Sear's Selective & Alternative vaccine schedules. This informs parents of their options besides (1) getting all vaccines on the AAP's schedule, or (2) declining all vaccines.

This book is filled with delicious recipes for Vegans. It was very helpful when I decided to go Vegan and was short on recipes to make my favorite foods.

Not for people who enjoy real food.

This book is too "radically vegan" for my taste. And speaking of "taste", nothing in this book has any. What the heck is "vegan bacon", anyway? Why bother? I guess it's easy to be a skinny bitch if you never eat anything that tastes good. It would explain the "skinny" and also the "bitch"...
Now I understand. Thanks, but I'd rather not be either.

Another fad diet book, with an extra helping of hate and anger!

This book is full of non-facts, psudeo-science and outright lies. It's is just another fad diet book, where just like any other of these bad advice books- you can lose a few pounds then gain it all back.

It has a hidden vegan agenda- nothing wrong with being vegan mind you, but why not be honest about it?

Advices goes from the "of course, heard it a thousand times" to completely wacky.

Most of the recipes are about as nutritionally balanced and tasty as eating the book itself.

And, to top it off there's a undercurrent and subtext of hateful anger in this series of books.

Finally a cookbook of normal food for vegans!

Does lasagna, potatoes au gratin, or a brownie sound good? I thought so!

This cookbook has includes a wide range of foods that are fantastic every-day choices. Another plus is that most of the ingredients are repetitive so you can stock your pantry and have some pretty versitile menu options.

Below are the sections:
Breakfasts
PMS Snacks
Appetizers
Soups & Stews
Salads
Sandwiches
International
Italian
Down Home Cookin'
Staple Meals
Dressings, Sauces & Substitutes
Happy Endings (Desserts)

A particularly helpful part of this book is the glossary which defines/describes most of the foods/ingredients that would not be commonly known.

This book has less raunchy language than the other Skinny Bitch book and I think they got it right with this one.

Highly recommend!

The first book that was written was very informational and started me on a kick to truly look at ingredients and find out what is in my food. This book however is not necessarily realistic in adding these recipes to your diet. A lot of the recipes call for coconut oil and have fake cheeses and meat that you could use. Soy is a big ingredient in a lot of the fake foods. Research done on soy shows that too much consumption can have a negative effect on your diet, especially if you have hypothyrodism or other ailments. There is research that goes both ways but too much of a good thing isn't always good. I guess you need to do research what you eat and find if it truly is good for you. I don't condone it, I just don't eat a lot of it. I do have this book and haven't really made much out of it. I am not in to eating fake food and would rather eat and buy things that are natural... so if you like that route too... I don't recommend it. If you are in to fake foods and coconut oil... go for it.

I have merely read random chapters /pages off the Manual and I am already totally convinced it is a wonderful buy that I have made. The style of presentation is easy-going even when it is dealing with serious subjects and that is good for a Manual one wants to read in a relaxed mode.

"How Well Do You Know Your Body?" begins this enlightening 544-page book. It continues with how blood is pumped throughout your body, how your brain works, how your body moves, how you breathe, how food is digested, how your immune system works, and how sexual and sensory organs work. This updated edition of the book includes the quiz along with a new chapter on the liver and pancreas, which describes the function and purpose of each. The authors also debunk popular myths about the body.

The contents include:
Preface
Chapter 1: Your Body, Your Home: Super Health
Chapter 2: The Beat Goes On: Your Heart and Arteries
Chapter 3: Do You Mind: Your Brain and Nervous System
Chapter 4: Motion Control: Your Bones, Joints, and Muscles
Chapter 5: To a Lung and Healthy Life: Your Lungs
Chapter 6: Gut Feelings: Your Digestive System

Chapter 8: Sex Marks the Spot: Your Sexual Organs
Chapter 9: Common Sense: Your Sensory Organs
Chapter 10: Sick Sense: Your Immune System
Chapter 11: This Gland is Your Gland: Your Hormones
Chapter 12: Hell Cells: Cancer
Chapter 13: The Owner's Manual Diet
Chapter 14: The Owner's Manual Workout
Chapter 15: FAQs
Index

This book is both instructive and entertaining. It includes a large (70-page) chapter on diet, which has over 30 recipes. The diet really emphasizes keeping your body healthy and young. The book also has a 24-page chapter, "Owner's Manual Workout", which provides easy-to-do exercises. This is a great book that makes understanding the human body accessible to those without a degree in physiology. I also recommend [[ASIN:097974590X THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams]] and The 2007 Second Expert Report, Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective..
