The author spends a decent amount of time re-hashing what was said in the first book, but then gets more in depth with a grocery list, recipes, and good choices when eating out. I would recommend either book since you don't really need both unless you are really trying to get into it full force. This book has marginally more info, and the biggest difference between the this and the original is that this one expands on the eating plan somewhat substantially while minimizing the focus on physical exercise.
The greatest advantage I find with this book is that it packs the most information in the smallest amount of space which would make it a more convenient guide to carry with you.
I'm not sure about the people who think this book isn't as helpful as the original, but I don't have the Abs Diet Power 12 memorized yet and wish that I had this book with me when I went to the grocery store earlier today.

If you follow a low-carb lifestyle and ever entertain or celebrate holidays then this book is a must-have.
I have several low-carb cookbooks but this one is different. Whatever other low-carb cookbooks you have, you need this one too. So many of us end up putting our diets on hold during the holidays or family get-togethers. Enter: The South Beach Diet Parties and Holidays Cookbook to the rescue.
This book gives recipes that are suited and delicious enough to become part of your holiday celebrations. The recipes cover events such as a Super Bowl Bash and Baby Showers to holidays from New Years to Christmas.
The opening page for each party or holiday gives you a menu list and also a party game plan that helps you organize and plan ahead. Nutrition at a glance facts and make ahead instructions are given at the end of each recipe.
The book's pages are high quality pages with color photographs. I always appreciate color photos of food when they are included in a cookbook. The book has 21 menus with 150 recipes that will have you saying "It's time to celebrate with some good food". Best of all, it's food that's good for you too.

I went on the South Beach Diet in November 2005. In one year I went from weighing 280 lbs to weighing 215! My cholesterol went from 221 to 141,and my blood pressure went from 150/100 to 117/77 (with NO drugs). Also I lost 6 inches around my waist. It went from 42 inches to 36.As of May 2008, I currently weigh 212 (at 5' 11') and am trying to work my way to 195 now.I own all of the books and am one of the biggest advocates of the diet. I would recommend this book to anyone!

I was suffering from a skin ailment for the past 2 years. After reading Eat Right 4 Your Type, I decided to start following the diet. My skin ailment went away!!! I am sold on the blood type diet. It really does work. I feel terrific, hooray!! This mini resource fits in my purse and I use it all the time. I tell people about my success and they want to know all about it. I use it when I shop, and when I go out to eat, to make sure I buy and eat things that won't be bad for my blood.

I ordered this book because some of my co-workers are on this diet. So far, I have replaced several major food items the book suggested I stop eating with other foods. I actually have lost weight and have more energy. I will continue to do so with other foods.
I think this diet worth considering, especially by those with allergies as I have. I'm hoping for a long-term solution and am keeping an open mind that this will help.

I just got the shock of my life at a routine check up when my doctor told me I had very high LDL. With a new-found interest in diet, I picked up "The Spectrum", a book I had been meaning to take a look at anyway.
I found the book to be interesting in the way it categorizes food from Most Healthful (Category 1) to Least Healthful (Category 5).
I would have to say, though, that I do not find this book all that helpful when it comes to the task of putting together a diet. Here are the reasons:
1) It doesn't say so on the cover, but he basically advocates a vegetarian diet. There are almost NO "most healthful" sources of protein except for garbonzos and soy (I think.) There is ONE Level 2 source of protein, which I believe is wild salmon. I'll just go down to the wild salmon store after work and prepare myself a wild-salmon meatloaf. What would we do without health food stores? Die? How are those realistic sources of protein? Another thing, there isn't even an entry for "protein" in the index, nor did I find information on how to ensure I get enough protein. Perhaps these issues are beyond the scope of the book, or I missed them.
Yesterday, I had a grilled chicken and spinach salad and thought I was doing okay. That was before I found out that chicken is only one level better than donuts.
2) This whole business of "it's not all or nothing" is, I think, a bit of a cop-out and a way to claim his is not the "no fat" diet. His repeated advice to make an individualized selection of what level to eat at is not helpful to me. What is the rational amount of "least healthful" food to eat, after reading about how it will kill me?
3)The recipes did not seem like something a person with a real life and kids would be able to put on the table. (Many of them do not seem to provide much protein, but maybe I'm wrong on that.)
Anyway, if you are looking to put together a diet, I don't think this book will be all that helpful.

The Ornish diet is great for many, but would it work for Eskimos?

The Ornish diet is great for many, but I wonder would it work for Eskimos?
Seven years ago a doctor told my husband he had prostrate cancer and should have his prostrate removed. My husband went to a second doctor for a second opinion. The second doctor wanted to use radioactive pellets to stop the cancer. My husband decided to follow the diet Doctor Ornish had a group of prostrate cancer patients using. After following the diet and a "watchful waiting" process for seven years, my husband's health is even better than when he started the program. I think "The Spectrum" can help almost anyone who reads and follows it. Both my husband and I follow it.
I only gave the book 4 stars for two reasons:
-1. The structure of the book is not user friendly. I believe that for the first chapter of the book, Ornish should provide a "Reader's Digest" version of the book. Then for the readers who want more detail he could reference later chapters.
-2. I felt that Ornish presented his diet as THE solution. I wonder if there are places and people in the world for whom low fat diets are not possible or perhaps not even healthy, such as in Eskimo villages before Europeans took over. Would such people have developed the genes to not only live on a high fat diet, but the need to have a high fat diet? I wonder if there has been much research on the differences between the nutrition needs of different ethnic and racial groups?

I loved this book by Dean Ornish. I have read a lot of health articles and books, but I always look for fresh perspectives or new information to stay motivated. This book had a well-rounded, sensical approach to eating and living. The information was convincing because it was based in legitimate scientific research as opposed to mostly anecdotal evidence, which is often what health guidebooks offer. This one is a book I could refer back to again and again for guidance and inspiration.

The book is great. Ornish does ramble from time to time -- at times I forget what the original point was. In general, however, I think this is a great book. He backs all his points with research data (sometimes multiple data). He explains nutrition, exercise, meditation, etc., as being part of a larger spectrum. He does not tell us where we should be on the spectrum, but merely points out the most likely outccomes for different levels on the spectrum and leaves it to the reader to make their own decisions.
My biggest problem with the Kindle version is that the tables are so tiny that they are basically illegible. One of these tables is one which shows where different foods are on the spectrum -- I would really like to be able to see it, as that is what the whole book is about. In really good light, if I squint, I can make out most of it (I have perfect vision), but it is not comfortable. The other thing to know about the Kindle version is that he keeps talking about the guided meditation CD that comes with the print version of the book -- it is not included (obviously) with the Kindle version and I'd kinda like to try it out. I am overall happy with my Kindle version -- everything else is well-formatted and easy to read, but am considering supplementing it with the print version for the two reasons just mentioned.
For those two reasons, I give this 4 instead of 5 stars.

I got this cookbook because I was looking for healthy recipes for my slow cooker. While the recipes are no doubt healthy, few-to-none of them are for what I would consider "common" dishes. I ended up getting the Betty Crocker Slow Cooker cookbook (which gives you a nutritional breakdown for every recipe at the bottom of each page) and like that one a lot better.

The flavors of the recipes are decent and there are some interesting new ideas, but why use canned beans in a slow cooker? Upon thumbing through my copy (which I am going to sell) I saw recipe after recipe that intrigued me, only to find that the ingredient list contained canned beans. Maybe I'm odd, but I enjoy the nice consistency you get from cooking your own beans in the slow cooker from dry beans.

I ordered this book the day the doctor told me to begin testing glucose numbers. It is a wonderful orientation of what is going on and what to expect as the months progress. My disposition was that if reading about diabetes and testing, testing, testing can make me do everything necessary to avoid full blown disease, I should try it. This approach and this book have worked so far. The book has taught me to be aggressive, and this is a huge help right now.

Written for the layperson who has been newly diagnosed with Type 2. This book has made all the difference in my attitude towards my diabetes. I believe your primary physican can actually mislead you where this book has explained what my options are and I feel great with the knowledge obtained thru reading this book. I highly recommend getting a copy if you have Type 2 diabetes.

This book has really helped me to find out about Type 2 diabetes. I had no idea what it was until I was told that I had it. I thought all people with diabetes had to take insulin shots! Gretchen Becker has been like having a good friend taking you through the steps. I highly recommend it for anyone newly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

The only down fall to this book is me because sometimes I slack. I love watching my progress and seeing it on paper. Its very organized and easy to use. Also, I dont always remember which equipment i used so when i record it I can just look back and refer to other days.

I have really enjoyed using this journal. It has everything I could think of and more. I looked it up because I heard Reese Witherspoon used one, and wanted to see what it was about. If you have a hard time keeping track of what you eat and when you exercise, this will help a lot!

This book makes it easy to track your exercise program and food intake. When you write your food down you tend to watch your diet more closely. A record of your workouts help to switch it up a bit because you now know what you did yesterday or the previous day.

We women are fortunate to have so many thoughtfully executed resources available to us as we approach our second half of life. As a midlife author myself, I resonated with "The Age of Miracles" and found myself cheering at our shared perspectives.
Marianne Williamson does a fabulous job of encouraging us to wake up to the bounty of life still in front of us. Her warm and witty style, generous nature and insightful perspectives beckon the reader to open up to possibilities. She refers to our midlife years of transition as "sacred years" and I wholeheartedly agree. It's time to make peace with our past and BE the woman we've become.

Marianne Williamson's latest book will uplift many who need to know and understand that reaching 40, 45, 50 and beyond is not the end of the world as they know it. Marianne's dry wit and own experiences help the book along but her profound understanding of the way women think and her intense knowledge of A Course in Miracles glues the whole thing together, allowing for an inspiring read that re-ignites any flames that may have gone out in your life (or perhaps ignites flames that had never been lit!).
I love the way Marianne sees mid life as the opportunity for a second (and sometimes a third) puberty... finally reaching the point in our lives where our personalities have matured enough to know how to handle the opportunities and challenges that we are faced with every day. Retirement is less about stopping work and more to do with finding and doing what is really our passion. At 40 or 50 we have (God willing) another 40 or 50 years to discover that passion and live it, knowing that all the experiences in previous careers and relationships with others have brought us to the point where we now, hopefully, know what to do with it all.

Pleasant enough and upbeat, but when she quoted Werner Ehrhardt (founder of EST) in the introduction, I knew I'd made a mistake. I started looking around for her credentials and couldn't find any credentials of any sort. A good friend could give an equally good or better pep talk. Not very promising, so I sent it back.

I purchased this and The China Study - two books closely related / companions in my opinion. They even talk about each other. The recipes in this book have really helped us eat healthier and I highly recommend this book for a good understand of what heart disesase is and how to prevent it (and how to reduce other illnesses as well). Add a little bit of unrefined sea salt to the recipes and they are delicious. Half of this book is just recipes! It is a very easy read, and very captivating.

I ordered this book and sent it to all my relatives - that was seven couples, plus 10 nieces and nephews. I have read many books on how to eat properly to feed the body. After reading this one, I can throw all the others away. If we all get with this program, most of our health issues will be solved along with health insurance problems. This book goes into detail on what to eat in order to feed the cells and keep the body tuned to the max. The recipes are delicious, you will never be hungry, and you will automatically lose weight you don't need. Don't walk - run to get this book.

I wish I had not wasted my time and money on this worthless book. If it has a face, according to the author, don't eat it. That means, no fish, no poultry, no lamb no lean beef or any other high quality protein. My aim was to get away from prescriptions that do not cure a condition, but simply relieves symthoms. However, this book advocates statins to control cholestrol something that I would prefer to do via diet when you consider the many dangerous side effects of drugs especially the statins. When Dr. Esselstyn stated that no oils including Olive oil was good for you, and went on to state that this monosaturated 'heart healthy' oil should be avoided because it contained a small amount of saturated fat, I knew it was time to put down the book and move on to a doctor---preferably and alternative physician---who knew his subject.

This book can be summed up very quickly - no meat, no fish, no oil - if you enjoy eating at all, this is not a solution for you. If you are willing to live on fruits and vegetables only, I suppose it probably works.

This is tne most informative, well put together publication on Juice Fasting I've yet to see. It was a tremendous help to me on my most recent fast which lasted 12 days! I would recommend this thumbs up for anyone considering either a long term or a short term juice fast. Filled with all sorts of useful information on various situations one comes across while fasting. I've even stocked a bunch in my reception room (colon hydrotherapist) to sell to my clients!! One can sense the author has experienced first-hand all that he shares. Easy to read and understand. What are you waiting for? Order it now; you won't regret it!

I bought this book to better help me in managing my Crohn's disease during flare-ups. I pretty much bought the book based on the title and thought it would be helpful.
The author right off the bat says that if you are going to fast, you REALLY need to fast without ANY intake of food except water, but if you are going to juice fast, this is how you do it. He concentrated more on fasting than juice fasting, which seems to make this book title mis-leading.
He also goes as far as saying that self-purging (finger down the throat) may be required to purge the body of inpurities. Whoa, time out, that is a bit extreme.
I cannot give the book just one star, because there was some good information in there about fasting symptoms and other general tid-bits, but since this author has absolutely no credentials, I would seriously question anything he suggests to do.

This is an excellent resource on WHY fasting can be beneficial and how to best accomplish it - different types of fasing, the benefits and potential problems with each, and how to accomplish the fast. If, however, you're looking for a book with specific receipies to follow while on a juice fast, the book is light.

These is the pros BUT: it has some cons...if you live outside the states
(I live in Argentina) it's really difficult to follow 80% of the recipes, because most of them have products, that are nonexistent elsewhere but USA.
Besides that, the diet is great, for people who -at least can have a food Mixer at work. It has six meals a day, which is great, but also needs lot's of planification.
SO, if you live on the USA, don't hesitate about buying these book, is great! If you don't think it twice!
