While gathering information on alternative cancer treatments I came across this author and this book. I wish I had started with it. The writing is clear and consise. The author gives background, any substantiating trials or research done on protocol, as well as websites, phone numbers and addresses for products or literature discussed. It's an EXCELLENT resource that I keep by my chair and refer to regularly. It is also chocked full of testimonials, often of medical professionals who support alternative therapy and sometimes in conjunction with traditional therapy. It will impact not only your thinking regarding alternative treatments for cancer but also your current lifestyle.

I have the original version of this book. I began using the advice given in it devotedly when I was released onto hospice from a 3 week hospital stay in Jan 07. A whole team of doctors thought I'd be dead in a couple weeks but almost 2 years later I am still here! My tumor was huge and so it's still there but lysing every day and the cancer that was in my bones is GONE. I never used chemo or radiation. Get the book & USE it!

Bill has written a top flight book. If you are not directly affected, or a friend or relative of someone with the problem, you are an extreme minority. Everyone should have access to this book and it's information. Today there are only 13 copies available in all of the U.S. libraries. There may be a better book somewhere, and you may or you may not find it, but why wait? Don't hesitate; just order it. It will change your life. With knowledge being power, this will be the best decision almost anyone could ever make. If there were a security rating attached, this book would be in the top secret catagory for obvious reasons. Get yours while you still can. After all, what good is the money if you cannot enjoy it?

A great diet indeed. However, I was surprised when I read about his suggestion about including tofu into the diet. It is well known now amongst health practitioners that tofu is NOT a health food. Other than that, I highly recommend it.

What a great book! There's so much hype and misinformation in the thirty million dollar diet industry, it's refreshing to run across a book that offers sound information based on good science. Dr. Hyman covers every aspect of developing optimal health.

Easy-To-Follow, Reader-Oriented Book

Review Date: 2008-07-24
I bought this book because of a recommendation by someone that had implemented, and kept using Ultra-Metabolism "steps" with great success. Upon reading Ultra-Metabolism, I recognized information I use and share...all the time.

Why read or buy another "weight-loss" book when the Seven Keys to the New Science of Weight Loss are listed on page 73-74? According to Dr. Hyman, everyone has his or her own instruction manual. So why purchase this book? I would suggest that you download guides from www.ultrametabolism.com. This may be enough for you. The book serves as support and offers reminders to help people keep on track.

Ultra-Metabolism quizzes you and guides you, step-by-step, to deciphering your own metabolism, and a whole lot more, in what he calls an "Ultra-Metabolism Prescription". Again, Dr. Hyman instructs us that this is the basis for generating the right instructions to your own body, through diet, and ... Ultra-Metabolism.

Dr. Hyman follows the premise of food containing information to talk to our genes, or "Nutrigenomics". In addition to offering exciting, cutting-edge research, he offers nutritionally-sound advice on how you can talk to your genes: Eat real, whole foods; eat foods high in phytonutrients; eat foods with a low glycemic to control appetite; eat more fiber intake to lower body fat; get your meal timing right to help turn on your metabolism; reduce stress (stress makes you fat, relaxation makes you thin); exercise in a manner that turns on metabolism; and reduce inflammation.

"Eat breakfast daily: Spread your food intake and calories throughout the day; Wait at least two to three hours after your last meal before going to sleep."

Where have you heard this before?

Another example of simple, effective suggestions are supplements to consider when you are turning on Ultra-Metabolism:

"1. A multivitamin and mineral combination. 2. A balanced, absorbable calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D supplement. 3. An omega-3 fatty acid supplement.

Many people do very well with a structured approach to weight loss. As the reader would expect, Dr. Hyman guides you to natural weight loss, step-by-step. Starting with Step one: Detoxifying the liver.

In addition to offering a plethora of practical, easy-to-implement weight loss suggestions, the author busts a few "myths" while promoting education. He includes information regarding "Nutrition", and how we come to think about food:

P. 66 The food industry generates more than a trillion dollars in annual sales, accounts for 12 percent of the U.S. gross national product (GNP), and employees 17 percent of the country's labor force. It spends more than $33 billion a year on marketing alone. Seventy percent of those dollars go to pushing fast food, convenience foods, candy, snacks, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, and desert. Only 2.2 percent of those marketing dollars are spent on advertising for fruit, vegetables, grains or beans.

I also enjoyed Dr. Hyman inclusion of relevant and stimulating quotes:

"Life is the art of drawing sufficient conclusions from insufficient premises."
Samuel Butler

As you would expect, Dr. Hyman offers the usual faire of delicious, natural recipes, and Ultra-Metabolism possesses its fair share of "buzz-words". Ultra-Metabolism also includes Dr. Hyman's attempt to generate an on-line Ultra-Metabolism community, which comes off as a bit far fetched. However, taking cues from various weight-watching groups, his efforts may very well bear fruit.

The "Food is Medicine" premise of Ultra-Metabolism focuses this book as excellent "support" literature. Ultra-Metabolism reinforces your healthy lifestyle choices, which, in turn, support your health and wellness. Ultimately, in this "win-win" situation, you gain timely, user-friendly, effective resources and guidance to be well-inform about the choices you may make ... a recipe for success.

I prefer to recommend natural health texts that acknowledge alternative health practices, and their long-time contributions to the health, stress reduction and wellness fields; this acknowledgement was lacking in Ultra-Metabolism. However, given the exceptional nature of this easy-to-follow, reader-oriented book, I am happy to recommend it.

Finally, Closer to the eating truth

"Ultrametabolism" is by far one of the best books I have ever read on the subject of diet and its effect on your health. As a large endurance athlete struggling to lose a few pounds and keep up my stamina, this book has revealed the misconceptions of the typical low fat or low carb diet and throughly explained why the "calories in/ calories out" equation doesn't seem to work for many people. By learning why to eat whole non processed foods, my friends and I have all begun to shed unwanted pounds and become healthier and stronger in the process. Bravo to Dr. Hyman! Highly recommended and easy to put into action.

This is the 3rd of Dr. McKeith's books I've purchased with the cookbook on it's way and I'm browsing through Slim for Life for the 3rd time. My husband's even paying attention now. I'm eating beans and grains that are new and interesting and above all delicious. Low fat diets never did much for my system aside from a few pounds and dull hair and thin fingernails. Protein and veggies was next choice and lost substantial weight but missed fruits and melons like crazy. This plan, protein from beans and grains and nuts is heavenly. We live in a small Southern community where many of her ingredients aren't available. Health Food Stores are also not available. But substitutions can be made and recipes altered a bit to give variety. After 2-1/2 weeks I've lost nearly 10 lbs, my clothes are loose but best of all my heartburn is gone, GERD is at bay and sinus headaches have said good bye. Can't say there aren't still days of wistfully eyeing my co-workers' hush puppies or donut, but truthfully? No inclination to toss Snickers bars into my basket at checkout any longer and a few bites of ice cream last week wasn't all that great. Before the change in eating, I could down a pint without hesitation and go "mmmmmm" the entire time. My salads are full of more ingredients these days, VERY green, with seeds for protein. A few of my favorite middle eastern dishes are also allowed - Hummus with veggies instead of bread and stuffed grape leaves with brown rice instead of white. It's been a fun experience and when the cookbook arrives, I'm sure it will be even more so. The books themselves are beautiful and being a lover of books, entice you to keep going through them even though you've memorized the gist of the plan. Dr. McKeith isn't the first person without "MD" credentials who knows good nutrition. A dear friend of mine tried to get me to eat this way when I was in my 30's. Too bad I waited so long. Just turned 63 and in this short period of time, feel better, sleep less, sleep BETTER, and look forward to eating. Kudos Gillian! this is a great way to take hold of your diet.

This a very good book to help you detox and change your eating (and living) habits for the better. I disagree with people that it's a "diet" book. It's a lifestyle book. That being said, I can't give it 5 stars because there are some issues with the book: I wonder if all of the recipes were fully tested (some of the items took 2x longer to cook than listed in the recipe, like the risotto), there are inconsistencies in the measurements (majority are American, however, several recipes are in metric). Finally, it would be more interesting if the plan was a little more "mixed", meaning if you didn't have to have miso soup for two days straight for lunch or salad with a some kind of bean toping for 3 days back-to-back. I would recommend this book to anybody trying to change bad habits and begin a new, healthy eating lifestyle.

THE BAD:

1. I live in a large City (Chicago) with every kind of store you can think of and I still had a hard time finding some of the ingredients used in the recipies. So you spend a lot of time shopping.
2. You will spend a lot of time chopping and cooking. If you hold down a job, you must be very organized.
3. The cost of most of the ingredients (organic) are very expensive. But the cost goes down once you get stocked on the staples, but is still more than I usually spend.

THE GOOD:
1. Most of the recipies are very good to great. (a few are not).
2. You will enjoy eating a variety of different tastes.
3. You will never be hungry. (I have a hard time eating all the food).
4. You will feel more energized and healthy.
5. Best of all , you will lose weight even if you are a postmenopausal woman like me. I lost 12lbs in 25 days.

This is the way I will eat for the rest of my life. I have never said that with any other diet or way of eating before now, and like most of you, I've tried everything.

I have a number of raw food books. The problem is they are too difficult or too boring. This book gives great info. It hits all the points you always read concerns about. I thought the recipes would not be interesting since this is a basic book. I was wrong. The chocolate-orange pudding is great. The choco tacos were really good. I almost didn't try them. You should. I seem to be the only person who doesn't care for almond milk. The cardamom-almond milk is great. The survivor's cereal is worth the price of the book. I am not a smoothie person and always looking for something else for breakfast.

After making another wonderful dinner from this book tonight, I decided that I should write my impression of the recipes. I have a lot of raw uncook books, so I am familiar with many recipes and food preparation techniques. These authors seem to have perfected the ingredients for soups and breads, and they really understand the concept of taste. I first made the Sweet Vanilla-Almond Dip - so simple but so yummy! I love it with apple. Then I made two salad dressings, the Tahini Dressing and the Fantastic Flax Dressing - both perfect and delightful! I made the Blueberry-Vanilla Macadamia Nut Granola and it is quite good. Then tonight I had for dinner the Carrot Ginger Soup with a sandwich made with the Foccacia. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to try raw cuisine, and I intend to keep exploring more recipes!

This publication is quite informative for those of us new to eating raw; however, I suggest you purchase a raw cookbook with quick meals to keep you inspired to eat raw as you dehydrate foods for meals in this publication. One suggestion is "Raw Food Made Easy for One or Two" by Jennifer Cornbleet. There is a transitioning section in "The Idiot's Guide", but again much of the foods require dehydration which can take days.

The "Complete Idiot's Guide" is recommended by me for its informative take on raw eating and meal variety. There is helpful information on the pantry, tools to purchase and websites to check out. You'll be satisfied with this publication. Would have been given 5 stars if quicker meals were incorporated to transition you into raw eating.

This book really has some good info for people that are looking for the next step in juicing, fasting. Talks about the differences in REAL fasting and juice fasting, which the author feels a juice fast is really not a fast at all but a liquid diet. Fasting according to the author is consuming only water for a period of time. Still a good book for beginners.

Not too bad

I would recommend this thumbs up for anyone considering either a long term or a short term juice fast. Filled with all sorts of useful information on various situations one comes across while fasting. I've even stocked a bunch in my reception room (colon hydrotherapist) to sell to my clients!! I bought this book to better help me in managing my Crohn's disease during flare-ups. I pretty much bought the book based on the title and thought it would be helpful.

The author right off the bat says that if you are going to fast, you REALLY need to fast without ANY intake of food except water, but if you are going to juice fast, this is how you do it. He concentrated more on fasting than juice fasting, which seems to make this book title mis-leading.

He also goes as far as saying that self-purging (finger down the throat) may be required to purge the body of inpurities. Whoa, time out, that is a bit extreme.

I cannot give the book just one star, because there was some good information in there about fasting symptoms and other general tid-bits, but since this author has absolutely no credentials, I would seriously question anything he suggests to do.

I did a 13 day Master Cleanse and LOVED it! I had never done a cleanse and was not sure i could do it. I am a yogi and eat very well, but at 47 was feeling a little sluggish and chunky. After meeting three people in different circles that had done it, I thought I'd give it a go! The book was super informative and covered all the bases. I personally felt good to fantastic the whole 13 days, in fact i was energized! I lost some inches, my skin looks great, and I feel amazing! Since then, my son, two friends and their son have started it and love it! This book is definitely a must if you're ready to let go of some old stuff!

This book is truly remarkable! I did the 10-day Master Cleanse in May with only the information I got online from Stanley Burrough's book. I had so many questions and nowhere to get the answers until I heard about Peter Glickman's book, "Lose Weight, Have More Energy, and Be Happier in 10 Days". I am now on day 9 of my second cleanse and am so much more confident of what I am doing and am constantly referring to this book to read what others have experienced. This cleanse is so "do-able" because Peter coaches all along the way. The results are amazing! I've lost 6 lbs. and haven't experienced a bit of hunger. I am energized and have decided to make this a 20 day fast. The exhilarating feeling of cleansing your colon of a lifetime of crud is empowering and freeing. Thank you, Peter, for devoting your life to helping we health-minded people with this easy-to-read gem of a book. I appreciate the reasonable cost, too!

Losing weight and having energy is the main reason I tried this cleanse but wow, all the benefits I received on top of that was amazing and just the reason why I do this cleanse every three months. The first time I did the cleanse it was hard; I only had the book "The Master Cleanse" but, the second time I did the MC, it was much easier because I purchased this book "Lose Weight, Have More Energy & Be Happier in 10 Days." This book helps explain the process a little better and is very encouraging. In my opinion, you must have both books to be successful in the cleanse. Thank you Peter!

After trying both Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig several times and losing only 5-8 pounds after months of dieting, I finally found out why I couldn't lose weight -- I had insulin resistance. I bought this book and started linking and balancing protein, fiber and carbs the way the book recommends and my weight is finally coming off. I totally recommend this book. :-)

I don't want to just repeat what so many other reviewers have already said. So suffice it to say that I also enjoyed reading this book and have found a wealth of useful knowledge in it.

However, a few points that I haven't seen mentioned yet...

-- Insulin resistance increases a person's risk of heart disease. The authors awknowledge this and briefly suggest making food choices that reflect a "heart healthy" lifestyle. However, they also tell the reader not to worry about salt intake and many of the items on their food lists are very high in sodium. This is not at all heart healthy. Watching my salt intake is fairly easy, but it does add a layer of complexity to this plan that is not advertised.

-- The only focus of this book is weight loss. There is no mention of how to tweak the plan for weight maintenance. I am trying to reverse my insulin resistance (and PCOS), but I am not overweight. There isn't a single sentence in this book that addresses my situation.

-- There is a heavy reliance on artificial sweeteners. For those who do not use artificial sweeteners, a level of complexity is added to the plan.

-- One of the selling points of this plan is that there is nothing to count. That is technically true. But there is a lot of estimating to be done. Some people see great success with estimating and keeping things in their heads. I prefer to be a little more exact. Again, it's not hard to count carbs and proteins and keep track of calories (rather than estimating them), but it adds a level of complexity.

So, because I'm a bit of a perfectionist, I've made this plan a little more complicated than it was originally advertised. But I still enjoy following it and I hope to see my insulin resistance reverse over time.

All my life I have struggled with my weight. I recently discovered what I had was Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, and have insulin resistance. This book is very clear on what combinations of food work together, and which to avoid. I have lost 5 lbs so far without very much effort at all. In fact, I am eating more now, and enjoying it more.

It works...

The recipes are fairly simple to make, love the flour mixes, and the foods are tasty for being gluten-free. I'm still getting used to this new way of eating and miss my whole wheat. But I feel much better and this cookbook makes it possible.

No so quick and easy

I bought this book because I needed to find other choices, especially preparing my own bread.
The book has a lot of recipes but they are complicated. To prepare a bread they referred to other preparations in different pages, and those preparations require several ingredients.
Another thing is that the book does not have any picture so that we can see how the results are going to be, and make us feel that we can eat delicious thing even gluten free.

I sent this cookbook to my daughter in college. She has just moved out of the dorm into a house and so gets to do her own cooking. She is very excited about this cookbook because everything is quick and easy, a must for a busy college student!

Everything we've tried has been really good.

My family has loved everything out of this book so far. My 8- year old is a hard sell so this is impressive to us. There is a wealth of very good, helpful information in the beginning of the cook book about why certain ingredients are used, if you don't have them how to substitute and general information about principles of cooking GF. Why didn't I give it five stars? The only down side is the need to make several different mixes in advance and have them on hand in the pantry so the recipes are much quicker at meal time. While this may seem to some a brilliant idea, and it is, it's not terribly effective for me since I forget to have it done ahead and am scrambling to make the mix and then the recipe which takes time. When I do have the mix handy it's really wonderful ... especially the waffles!

Excellent book, wonderful recipes, useful mixes!

I'm extremely pleased with this book! My son has autism and is on the GFCF diet and Carol's recipes have been lifesavers! I already had Cooking Free when I ordered this one and I am even happier with this book. The recipes are delicious and the flour mixes are such timesavers. When I find I'm running low, I take some time on a weekend, mix up a ton of Carol's Flour Blend, then go to work filling all my containers of mixes. The pancakes were declared as the "best GF pancakes I've ever made" by my husband who doesn't have to be GF (and I thought I made pretty darn good pancakes already). Her recipes are the kind that you can make for anybody and nobody will know they are special. That is the mark of a great book!

Completing the Science of Energy Density

I first became acquainted with the concept of Energy Density several years prior to reading this book. I read Rick Gallops book "The GI Diet" which introduced me to another book "Mayo Clinic on Healthy Weight" several years ago. The marvelous Mayo food pyramid is based on energy or calorie density. This idea was the main ingredient on my path to losing 80 pounds and restoring my blood sugar level to normal following my diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes. An additional good idea found in Rick Gallop's book is to apply the energy density principle to your plate by filling it with 50% non-starchy vegetables, 25% dense carbs and 25% protein. Another thing that I do is to use 50% Kellogg's All Bran or General Mill's Fiber One for my breakfast cereal. Energy density is particularly important to your selection of dessert. A half cup of pudding made with nonfat milk and sugar free mix is less than 100 calories. It is equally filling to a large chocolate chip muffin which comes in at 600 calories. Other useful books on energy density are the "Fit or Fat Target Diet" books by Covert Bailey and Ronda Gates. What the Volumetics book does is introduce us to the formal definition of energy density which is a measurement of the calories in a gram of food so that the energy density of any food can be easily calculated.

This is an excellent book. Everyone should have this book!
Since I was never taught how to eat healthy and properly as a child, this has given me the tools so I can now eat healthy, feel full and not deprive myself of foods that I like that aren't the greatest for me.

I made my kids read the book too, since I never taught them how to eat properly either.

I like the pictures that compare the volume of foods and ask you.............which one would you rather eat..........the full plate with the proper seasonings or the small plate prepared the way that we are all used to!

I love this book and I will let you know this is a great way to live

I ordered this book from Amazon, and since I start read it I just loved it. I have tried some other diet plan, mainly are South Beach and Artkins. They worked on me, I lost 15 pounds, but I do not think I can continue to do that. I can not eat fruit and my body felt very very tired, and I was in bad mood. I use this volumetrics Eating Plan, I lost weight, the most important is I feel very good and very comfortable. I can eat a lot fruit and every day I feel very satisfied, and I still lose weight. I am doing very good and I feel I can follow this plan for life. The book says this is not a quick fix but a life style change. I really agree. I feel so good so I invite you to try.

I am finding this book difficult to read. I am sure the information is useful, but I find myself struggling to get through it. Having read several healh-fitness-diet related books, this one was disappointing.
