I'm a Type 2 Diabetic that has had great success following the dietary recommendations Dr. Bernstein puts forth. His pragmatic diet has been a great help in moving my A1c down to the normal range. I've lost a needed 50 pounds. Overall, this book is loaded with good information for diabetics.

It was only through Bernstein's book that I was able to appreciate the importance of maintaining a low carbohydrate diet if I were to ever achieve "normalized" blood glucose and hope to avoid the long term complications associated with the disease. Bernstein, first trained as an engineer, later as an M.D., offers a wonderful "nuts and bolts" approach to maintenance of diabetes whether type 1 or type 2. His standard of control set the bar high where, in my opinion, it needs to be. I wish that my Father, who died of diabetes complications, had been privy to his approach and had available to him the instant test methods for blood glucose that are now available.

This book was a wellspring of information for me as a newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic. Getting off the cycle of being told to eat complex carbs, seeing my blood glucose spike from doing just what I was told, and getting medications increased again and again, I read what Dr. Bernstein said with interest. After trying his recommendations I can say with no reservations that this book may have saved my life! I highly recommend it to anyone who has pre-diabetes or diabetes and hope that the general medical community opens their eyes. After only one day of this diet my blood glucose readings were close to normal, and continue to stay there, with less medication. My energy levels are high and I have felt better than I have in a long long time. Kudos to you Dr. Bernstein, for daring to say the truth! I recommend both his books and also Dr. Atkins Diabetes Revolution to anyone who wants to learn about diabetes and diet.

I have done a lot of research on diabetes at the library and on the internet after I was diagnosed Type 2 in Aug 2007. I saw the dietician/nutritionist recommended by my doctor and also real a ton of information on the internet and many books from the local library. My fasting blood sugar when I was diagnosed was 311. I was able to get it down to 110 - 120 level after dieting, exercising, and eating the things recommended by the dietician. My problem was my levels were erractic up and down even when eating the same diet.

I saw Dr. Bernstein's book was highly recommended by Amazon readers, so I took the chance and bought the book. After reading that a diet of high proteins and very, very low carbs would help stabilize my blood sugars, I decided to try it. To my amazement, I started gettings readings in the mid 80's and the levels stopped spiking up and down. Carbs were my problem. Dr. Bernstein recommends an ideal reading of 83 and that is now my target.

This book should be a must read for all diabetics, both Type 1 and Type 2 people. My motto is "you can die from diabetes or learn to live with it," and I chose to learn to live with it. This book is a great learning tool and coupled with exercise (including weight training), weight loss and proper diet, you can control what happens to your body. It worked for me with results immediately.

Highly, highly recommended. If you have a friend or relative with diabetes, BUY this book for them. The author (Dr Berstein) is still a practicing physcian specializing in diabetes treatment. He is also a Type 1 diabetic. Dr Berstein's experiences lead to this book being published. It should be required reading for all diabetics.

Nancy Clark's book has revolutionized my diet, training, and life. As a fitness instructor and runner I had trouble knowing what to eat, how much to eat, and struggled with erratic weight. After reading this book all of my questions have been answered. I have learned tips on how to fuel my body for the demands that I put upon it. I have energy, I can eat without guilt, and my weight has stabilized. Science and experience backs up everything that Nancy Clark says. I'm a true believer. You'll love this book!

I recommend this book to everyone. Although Nancy Clark calls it a Sport's Nutrition Guidebook, this is really a guide on the way everybody should eat in order to be healthy. She begins by giving general guidelines on what eating every day should be like. She explains why everything is important: carbs, protein, fat, sugar, dairy. Then she goes on to explain what it is each of these types of food does in the body and how and why we should eat them. She also explains how to eat and when to eat. It is an extremely detailed book where you get a whole new outlook on food. There's also some great chapters with recipes.

The Sports Nutrition Guidebook is a useful resource for the average, healthy individual to have at hand as a nutritional resource. This book is more of a healthy living guide, than a sport specific guide, Individuals who are engaging in sports that require a lot of anaerobic activity, like football or baseball will not find this book as useful, but they will still find some great instruction. For endurance sports such as running or cycling, or for the general weekend warrior looking to have nutrition be a part of a healthy lifestyle, that is not concerned with larger than normal weight loss, this book is a good esource.

While basic advice is well-written here, that shouldn't be really new to anyone who is familiar with good nutrition: a balance of proteins, carbohydrates, fiber, and dairy; and the importance of regular meals, some care is taken to readjust thinking about fad diets and dietary myths, especially in preparation for physical activity. Unbalanced approaches to carbohydrates, fluid, protein, etc. and their dangers are detailed in an easy to understand format. The chapter on misusing a healthy lifestyle for rapid weight loss or other eating disorders is tactfully written.

The last third of the book is a useful recipe guide that applies principles taught in the book into practical meal planning steps that are neither arduous nor difficult for active individuals to adapt to. Creating a healthy approach to the body, especially in view of a fat obssessed society calls for balance and patience. There is nothing sudden or radical about the advice in this book, as it is above all, caling for a lifestyle that is healthy and active and is designed to provide nutrional advice for helping individuals achieve those goals. This book is a great resource for active people, who want sound, scientific advice that meets the needs of individuals in today's fast paced society.

This book was recommended based on interest in the book "In Defense of Food" which I loved. This book has the information that shows people are too hung up on balancing a diet, when eating FOOD is really what we need to focus on, fruits, vegetables, etc. that give individual bodies nutrients and energy without having to calculate and quantify all elements of food.

A must-have book.

This book answers practically every question that today's confused American consumer could possibly have about food. It is valuable information, organized to be very user-friendly. Ms. Nestle cuts through the conflicting information that is available regarding so much of our food supply, and offers clear, sane guidance that will be a benefit to anyone who seeks it.

This book has a split personality ...

This is really two books that would have been better separated. The author takes us through a supermarket, showing us what to look for on the shelves and what various labeling means. Much of this information is very interesting (she has one of the clearest explanations of what a calorie is that I've ever read; she explains how mercury in fish becomes so toxic to humans). Unfortunately, even though the book is only two years old time has not been kind in other areas. She advises us that after going through a processing plant she has fewer concerns about pre-packaged salads and vegetables (oops!) and she still subscribes to the mostly-debunked link between dietary fat and heart disease (recommending nonfat milk [shudder]).

However, commingled with the useful information are rants about how politics have corrupted our food supply. Again, some of this is very interesting (for instance, due to the efforts of the sugar trade association, in the U.S. getting 25% of our calories from added sugars is considered okay; most other countries cap it at 10%). However, this information isn't helpful as you're wandering the supermarket; it belongs in a separate book and in fact can be found in her book Food Politics. That's where it should be, and removing this would have made the book a much more manageable length.

A must have for your nutritional library

At last, an easy to read, comprehensive book that explains the ins and outs of the food industry. The author delivers the information without any kind of prejudice, just facts. Food is big business, and your health is not a priority to these companies; they vie for premium shelf space to appeal to you and your children, are allowed to misrepresent nutritional value in their products in the hopes of fooling you into buying it, and answers all those little questions that go around in your mind as you shop, wondering what's healthy and what's not. This book is for everyone who cares about what goes into their bodies , and having read it, you can enter any grocery store with confidence and know exactly what to buy and what to avoid.

Marion Nestle's What to Eat is a scientific examination of the health claims that food manufacturers and marketers use to move products. Organized by supermarket aisle, the book covers every food product in the produce, diary, meat, fish, frozen, processed, baby and specialty food aisles. Nestle helps the reader decipher both nutrition labels and marketing claims such as `certified organic,' `fair trade,' and `American Heart Association certified.' She exposes the food industry's role in our national nutrition and food policy and roots out the truth the sound bite headlines for scientific studies on diet.

What to Eat serves up 600 pages of indispensable advice, but the author is also willing to sum it up quickly: "Eat less, move more, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, go easy on junk foods."

While it will probably get swept under the rug as just another fad, "The Insulin-Resistance Diet--Revised and Updated" is actually really well written. Within the first 30 pages, they've explained the what and why, and are already offering suggestions on how to improve your diet. As I checked this out from the library, I wasn't able to try any of the recipes, but the image of the seesaw to balance carbs with protein stuck with me - I see it in my mind's eye every time I sit down to eat. The premise is simple and very easy to incorporate into any eating habits - no matter how on-the-go.

Easy to understand and follow.

The Insulin Resistance Diet is very easy to read, understand, and follow. After getting the book I began reading first and then my "official" start date was June 1st, 2008. According to my doctor's scale, I lost 4 lbs in the exactly two weeks between my last visits. That's about 2 lbs. per weeks, which is a good rate according to my doctor. I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, insulin resistance, as well as a family history of diabetes. I wanted to break the cycle of high and low blood sugar level spikes before my pancreas is used up!

Once you understand how your body reacts when you consume different types of food, and learn to recognize the different types, it is easier to eat out at restaurants, parties, and at home. The biggest changes for me is just finally feeling better, as well as recognizing true hunger signs for the first time that I can remember. I eat every 2-3 hours, always combine protein with any carbs... I will feel hungry 2-3 hours after eating, but not the extremes that I would feel before. I can even prepare meals and have started my whole family on the same healthy foods that I eat.. no more preparing two separate meals.. besides, I do not want my sons to get diabetes either.

Try this... for the $15-16.. how much better you will feel is worth the price.

This book opened my eyes about watching my glycemic index. I first became aware of it when I used the NutriSystem diet plan and noticed immediately that my tummy fat started disappearing. I realized that I needed to know more about the glycemic quality of foods since there is diabetes in my family history. I highly recommend this book.

Finally, a non-diet diet that works for vegetarians!

Review Date: 2008-03-03
Let me preface the following by stating that I've never been a "dieter", I've always just tried to eat as healthy as I can. And, as a life-long vegetarian I'd never really been able to participate in most fad-diets anyway (I need my carbs!). But, I'd noticed over the past year that even though I work out pretty consistently, my metabolism was changing and I had dramatic drops in blood sugar that left me feeling tired, light headed and nauseous a lot. I read an article about the low GI diet in one of my fitness mags, and it sounded like something I could actually try as a vegetarian. My husband read the same article and felt it was something he could do without eating "diet" foods.

It really isn't meant as a diet to help you lose a lot of weight quickly, it's much more about changing your overall eating habits and combinations of food so that you regulate your digestive track, which in turn controls hunger, crashes/spikes in blood sugar, increases energy, promotes overall long-term health, etc. It actually started as a method of eating for diabetics, but has since been adopted by non-diabetics.

This particular book is great because it explains the science behind it and also has a bunch of recipes and GI values for most foods. I've found that after doing it for 2 full months, I can pretty much make foods without recipes just by being able to judge whether it's a high or low-GI food. I also bought the vegetarian recipe book, and already have a few favorites in it.

Anyway, I've been doing this for about 2 months and really like it - you're not really depriving yourself of much. The only real adjustment is trying to buy organic when possible so there are no preservatives, and cooking a lot more!

Although it shouldn't really be considered a "weight loss diet", I think just the nature of the changes in my diet has led me to loose some weight. I've never considered myself overweight and have always been a healthy eater and consistent gym-rat. But, over the past 2 months, I've lost about 10 lbs - and that is with the occasional cheating, weekly dinners out, plenty of chocolate and wine, and a 2-week respiratory infection where I didn't work out once!

I would definitely recommend this book - and lifestyle - for anyone who is just trying to be, feel, and look more healthy overall without typical diet constraints.

Not what I was looking for. I wanted something that would give example menus for a day of healthful pregnancy eating. This is a collection of recipes much as would be found in any other cookbook with a healthy bent. The recipes are fine. The nutritional information section is fine. But nothing I couldn't have accomplished with the pregnancy books I already have plus a half-way decent cookbook. If you have, for example, What to Expect When You're Expecting and The Joy of Cooking, this will bring nothing new to your arsenal.

I found this information very helpful and very valuable. Even though I try to maintain awareness of good eating habits, I found this exceptionally helpful in reducing all sugar products prior to purchasing.
I have controlled my urges with carbohydrates and my love for fruit that would create a lot of insulin, and since reading this book and getting the Sugar Busters Cookbook, I am intaking more fiber, watching the amount of sugar in natural whole foods in one meal dinners or lunches, eliminating a lot of "White" potatoes, and eating fruits more appropriately throughout the day or week.
I am extremely delighted to say.. I found I am losing weight, and not craving carbs or sugar foods as readily as I did before.
I highly recommend this in general, without any cause or purpose. You will get a great deal of insight and information that YOU WILL USE on a DAILY BASIS, without having to call it a "DIET". You truly learn how to get healthy WITHOUT DRUGS !!!

When it came and I read it, it made so much sense to me, it's been easy. Only had the book for 6 weeks, and have lost 11 pounds, I am older and it's very hard to lose weight as you age. I also can not excercise like I'd like to becase of breathing problems, so to lose this much mostley bescause of my new eating habits, I'm very happy. I also ordered the other two books that go with this, and keep the one on shopping in my purse. It's working for me.

There are many good ones out there and I believe in taking a little bit of knowledge from each, that works for me and simply eating healthier as opposed to following a stringent diet. Whenever my weight starts to go up again it is absolutely because I stopped following the guidelines in this book. I pick up the book and read it again. Without fail the guidelines it provides help me lose weight quickly and consistently. This is a reference book I will not part with.

The first thing I ever cooked was the Bachelor's Prize Chicken from this book. It has been a hit with everyone that I've cooked it for, including my VERY picky ex-roommate. There are some recipes, mainly seafood, that I find it hard to find the ingredients for due to where I live. Otherwise, the ingredients are easy to find and not fussy. I own some Gordon Ramsay cookbooks but there's no way I'll ever be able to cook something from them!

I also like the simplicity of the cookbook itself. I don't feel bad when I spill stuff all over it because it wasn't a great work of art to begin with!

I bought this cookbook several years ago based on someone's recommendation, and consider it one of my best purchases ever. The recipes are simple to prepare, delicious and healthy. I have not been disappointed in a single recipe. I was a little turned off at first because there were no photos of the prepared foods, but after months and months of use, I can honestly say that I use this cookbook much more than my glossy cookbooks with the color photos. I've since bought it as a gift for friends and relatives and everyone has loved it! My favorite recipe is the Couscous with Sweet Potatoes and Yellow Squash (the aroma of this dish alone is worth the price of the book!), but as I said, everything I've tried is absolutely wonderful!

Awesome, healthy, but not for beginner cooks!

I was browsing through the reviews and noticed a few bad ones. The points that stood out were that the recipes were not for beginner cooks, ingredients were difficult to find or "unheard of," and the recipes didn't taste good. While I see where those reviewers are coming from, please don't let the bad reviews deter you from checking out this book!

I have been cooking for myself since I was a teen, so to me the recipes are pretty simple! I've also heard of and cooked with most of the ingredients. If some of the ingredients seem mysterious, consider that a reason to try them out. I do not eat red meat or pork, so I stick to the vegetable and seafood recipes. The "half the fuss" part of the title is true. The book really simplifies things *for me*. The "double the taste" part is a lot more subjective. This is touted as a healthy cookbook though, so you don't expect the world if you're used to junk. I find most of the recipes delicious, and I've been using this cookbook a lot.... and it's not even mine!

Someone also mentioned that the ingredients were pricey. That can be the case with healthy food sometimes. Better quality can sometimes mean higher prices. It may help to check out sales and to buy things in bulk. Just a though.

A no-muss no-fuss review of the cosmetic world -- be brave about the somewhat intimidating thickness as most of the pages or specific to product reviews. The actual information is a quick and useful read both front and back, then use the material in the middle to fill in answers to your questions. Highly recommend -- glad I purchased.

I'm impressed!

Wow! This book really stands out with its scientific references. How often do you find complete references including even the page numbers of the scientific journal, in a popular book? I thoroughly enjoyed this book even though cosmetics are not really my thing (I'm too lazy or "busy" to bother). Now I actually find myself using face creams and sunscreens. I used to think all cosmetic products were a waste of money but now I'm convinced that some products actually do help the skin.

Some of the critical reviewers here have clearly not read the book very well. I don't know where they get the idea that Begoun is against natural ingredients or plant oils. Quite the contrary, her own products are full of these and nowhere in the book did she say that she is against them. What she is against is using natural ingredients (or any ingredients) that have not been proven effective by scientific studies. In other words, she only wants to use those natural ingredients that actually work.

The same goes for essential oils. She is not againts using them if they have proven to be effective. Some essential oils have been and you can find those in her own products. What she does not like is for essential oils to be added to products solely because of the scent. And I agree: why would you want to put ANYTHING on your skin that does not have any purpose? If you want to enjoy the scent of essential oils you can use them in candles or spray them onto your clothes. You don't have to expose your skin to something that nobody really knows very much about.

I've bought the last 3 editions of this book, and each one has saved me tons of money. Paula's reviews are fair and accurate - even though we disagree on a few key items. Any time I make a new beauty purchase I first check it out in her book. It's astonishing how much better quality product is offered in drug stores these days. I highly recommend this book.

My wife loves it.

My wife has sensitive skin. She has bad reactions to lots of products. This book has helped her find products that help, rather than hurt, her skin.

Extremely useful reference

I got Paula's 2003 edition in 2006, but was sorry that it was rather outdated and in that edition she said she wouldn't be doing another one. So I was happily surprised to find a brand new edition in Barnes & Noble, and after perusing it I plan to order it from Amazon. A few comments: Some reviewers claim Paula gives negative reviews to most product so she can push her own line. I don't agree with that. In fact, in the 2003 edition which I have, she includes descriptions of her products but decided not to even rate them. I think in the new edition she DOES rate them finally. As someone who has really been a makeup junkie, particularly with trying out skin care products, I found her descriptions and evaluations extremely useful. I have tried cheap products and very expensive ones, and have found things I loved in both categories. One thing I DO believe is that the highly expensive products cannot really justify the high price tags. My own experience has shown that more expensive is not necessarily better. And cheap isn't necessarily bad. My own favorite cleanser, discovered by accident many years ago, is Cetaphil, and Paula rates that one highly. I just ordered a bunch of Paula's own product samples, and from what I can tell from small samples, I like them a lot, particularly her concealers. None of them irritated my skin. I've had a lot of trouble with sensitivity and skin scrubs, so I'm anxious to try her AHA gels instead of using granular type scrubs. By the way, the information on her website is useful and her lectures are interesting. Paula knows a lot and she has been studying and evaluating skin care for a long time. This book represents an enormous compilation of work, and there is nothing else like it out there. You may not agree with all of her opinions (for example, although I had hoped I wouldn't like it, I really do like Creme de la Mer despite its outrageous price, and I've found it soothing to my skin when it is in a reddish, upset state. I'd like to find a cheap clone of it, but thus far have not found one). The point is, you can use her reviews as a starting place for your cosmetics purchases. The fact is, cosmetics companies really do take advantage of us all and our desire to look good. I think we'd all admit that there are some truly outrageous prices out there, and after years of trying things, I have to admit I haven't found any miracles yet. It's a full circle, and I'm back to the point of trying to find products to cleanse and moisturize without irritating my skin. Nothing fancy is really needed. One interesting thing Paula provides is information where there is huge product overlap (example: all Olay's lines, with older ones now being cheaper and the newest ones costing quite a bit more. Yet, considering their ingredients, there is no real difference between them....you just pay more for the newer ones!!). All the beauty magazines feature various products (obviously "paid" by cosmetic companies to do so), and it's nice to find out more details about what these "really" are. In short, this is a great and very useful book if you approach it with the right attitude. For products I like, it's nice to learn exactly what component of the products creates the effect I like, too.

I love this cookbook. The title is not misleading: recipes are really ready that fast. And who knew cauliflower could be so tasty? If you are trying to maintain low carb eating, these recipes are a delight. There is great variety and they're delicious. There were a couple of odd ball ingredients in a few recipes, but those were surprisingly quite easy to find in my local grocery store once I knew to look for them. This book makes it nearly effortless to cook low carb and keep meals interesting. After years of devotion to Cooking Light (which I still like) this is my new go-to book for meals.

When I first received this book, I was a little disappointed because its a small book (approx. 6" x 8") with paperback-type pages. This is not the full-color, glossy pictures of recipes cookbooks. As soon I began scanning the pages of the recipes, I was no longer disappointed.

The book has page after page of delicious, mouth-watering recipes. It isn't filled with makeover recipes that require hard to find ingredients but foods that are naturally low-carb. Dana Carpender does use Splenda in her recipes so beware if you do not like to use Splenda.

If you are looking for a cookbook offering quick, easy, delicious, low-carb recipes then you will enjoy Dana Carpender's 15 minute Low-Carb recipes.

Sorry.. but very disappointed In the use of Artificial Sweeteners in so many of the recipes.. especially the deserts.. In a healthier world we should be getting away from the chemicals.. It's only a matter of time till we find out what the latest man made sweetener is doing to our bodies.. I wish the author would have used another ingredient..

Great, Quick Low Carb

I purchased this book at COSTCO for very cheap. I've been on the lowcarb lifestyle off and on.

The recipes are 15 minutes start to finish and taste great. I am considered a very good cook by friends and family and have been impressed with the wide range of flavors. Other reviews of "very hard to find ingredients" is just not true. This has become our go-to recipe book for the week when we come home from work.

Favorite recipes:

Easy Mexican Chicken
Microwaved Fish and Asparagus with Terragon Mustard
Sweet and Sour Pork (also we've made with chicken)
Balsamic Lamb Skillet (also made with Beef)
Chicken Skillet Roma
Chili Burgers
Asian Pork and Cabbage
Unstuffed Cababage

Get this book---it's great!
