A great diet indeed. However, I was surprised when I read about his suggestion about including tofu into the diet. It is well known now amongst health practitioners that tofu is NOT a health food. Other than that, I highly recommend it.

What a great book! There's so much hype and misinformation in the thirty million dollar diet industry, it's refreshing to run across a book that offers sound information based on good science. Dr. Hyman covers every aspect of developing optimal health.

Easy-To-Follow, Reader-Oriented Book

I bought this book because of a recommendation by someone that had implemented, and kept using Ultra-Metabolism "steps" with great success. Upon reading Ultra-Metabolism, I recognized information I use and share...all the time.

Why read or buy another "weight-loss" book when the Seven Keys to the New Science of Weight Loss are listed on page 73-74? According to Dr. Hyman, everyone has his or her own instruction manual. So why purchase this book? I would suggest that you download guides from www.ultrametabolism.com. This may be enough for you. The book serves as support and offers reminders to help people keep on track.

Ultra-Metabolism quizzes you and guides you, step-by-step, to deciphering your own metabolism, and a whole lot more, in what he calls an "Ultra-Metabolism Prescription". Again, Dr. Hyman instructs us that this is the basis for generating the right instructions to your own body, through diet, and ... Ultra-Metabolism.

Dr. Hyman follows the premise of food containing information to talk to our genes, or "Nutrigenomics". In addition to offering exciting, cutting-edge research, he offers nutritionally-sound advice on how you can talk to your genes: Eat real, whole foods; eat foods high in phytonutrients; eat foods with a low glycemic to control appetite; eat more fiber intake to lower body fat; get your meal timing right to help turn on your metabolism; reduce stress (stress makes you fat, relaxation makes you thin); exercise in a manner that turns on metabolism; and reduce inflammation.

"Eat breakfast daily: Spread your food intake and calories throughout the day; Wait at least two to three hours after your last meal before going to sleep."

Where have you heard this before?

Another example of simple, effective suggestions are supplements to consider when you are turning on Ultra-Metabolism:

"1. A multivitamin and mineral combination. 2. A balanced, absorbable calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D supplement. 3. An omega-3 fatty acid supplement.

Many people do very well with a structured approach to weight loss. As the reader would expect, Dr. Hyman guides you to natural weight loss, step-by-step. Starting with Step one: Detoxifying the liver.

In addition to offering a plethora of practical, easy-to-implement weight loss suggestions, the author busts a few "myths" while promoting education. He includes information regarding "Nutrition", and how we come to think about food:

P. 66 The food industry generates more than a trillion dollars in annual sales, accounts for 12 percent of the U.S. gross national product (GNP), and employees 17 percent of the country's labor force. It spends more than $33 billion a year on marketing alone. Seventy percent of those dollars go to pushing fast food, convenience foods, candy, snacks, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, and desert. Only 2.2 percent of those marketing dollars are spent on advertising for fruit, vegetables, grains or beans.

I also enjoyed Dr. Hyman inclusion of relevant and stimulating quotes:

"Life is the art of drawing sufficient conclusions from insufficient premises."
Samuel Butler

As you would expect, Dr. Hyman offers the usual faire of delicious, natural recipes, and Ultra-Metabolism possesses its fair share of "buzz-words". Ultra-Metabolism also includes Dr. Hyman's attempt to generate an on-line Ultra-Metabolism community, which comes off as a bit far fetched. However, taking cues from various weight-watching groups, his efforts may very well bear fruit.

The "Food is Medicine" premise of Ultra-Metabolism focuses this book as excellent "support" literature. Ultra-Metabolism reinforces your healthy lifestyle choices, which, in turn, support your health and wellness. Ultimately, in this "win-win" situation, you gain timely, user-friendly, effective resources and guidance to be well-inform about the choices you may make ... a recipe for success.

I prefer to recommend natural health texts that acknowledge alternative health practices, and their long-time contributions to the health, stress reduction and wellness fields; this acknowledgement was lacking in Ultra-Metabolism. However, given the exceptional nature of this easy-to-follow, reader-oriented book, I am happy to recommend it.

Finally, Closer to the eating truth

"Ultrametabolism" is by far one of the best books I have ever read on the subject of diet and its effect on your health. As a large endurance athlete struggling to lose a few pounds and keep up my stamina, this book has revealed the misconceptions of the typical low fat or low carb diet and throughly explained why the "calories in/ calories out" equation doesn't seem to work for many people. By learning why to eat whole non processed foods, my friends and I have all begun to shed unwanted pounds and become healthier and stronger in the process. Bravo to Dr. Hyman! Highly recommended and easy to put into action.

I am a certified weight consultant & the author of Asian Slim Secrets. I can agree with the author that lean meat, seafood, fruit & vegetables are healthy. However, I do not agree that one should get rid of cereals and legumes from their diet. It is not consistent with the food pyramid. Unprocessed cereals and legumes contain a lot of fiber and resistant starch which are beneficial for weight loss.

Nothing revolutionary

While this book was correct most of the time, and suggests a diet that would likely be effective, it doesn't really have any novel information, or even present the information in any terribly new way. If you do your reading, you will find this information from a million other sources.

Paleo Diet follows the great concept of eating how we were designed to eat and does so in a thorough, enlightening way. There are issues to consider, however, like the lack of variety in the foods they recommend and negative non-natural foods the book suggests (like flax seed oil for cooking). Despite the drawbacks, we recommend this book.

Paleo create for Creationists, too!

Review Date: 2008-05-22
As a young-earth Creationist, I love the concept of this diet, and it really works. I have been losing about 1/2 lb a day very consistently over time, I have more energy than before, I've lost that "brain fog" that so many people have on a high-carb way of eating, my general mood and outlook are improved, I'm certainly not starving. I'm in ketosis most of the time, so my body is a fat-burning machine, without me even trying - I don't even exercise, although I'll start soon. Why is this great from a Creationist viewpoint? The same principles apply -- what did the first human beings eat? Genesis 1 tells us that God created 1) grasses, 2) edible plants (vegetables, fruits, herbs) with seeds on the outside, 3) edible plants with seeds on the inside. Then, God tells us to eat those edible plants. Nowhere does He say to eat grass (grain) or seeds (grains, legumes, arguably potatoes). In Gen. 9:1-3, right after Noah's flood, God finally gives people permission to eat meat. Sure, people began to eat grain, beans & potatoes later in the Bible, that is an historical fact recorded in scripture. But going back to the beginning, what did our Intelligent Designer create for us to eat, originally? Fruits, vegetabes, herbs, (arguably) nuts and later on, meat too. Not grass, and not foods in which the entire food items IS the seed (grain, beans, potatoes). Some animals can eat those foods fine, but human beings aren't designed by our heavenly Creator to eat those things. We can if we have to, but in a free society today, we have the freedom to eat the way we were designed! I give this 4 stars. I withheld one star only because Dr. Cordain is very vocal about his foolish belief in the fairytale of evolution and its supposed basis for this diet. Frankly, this should be more aptly titled "The Creationist Diet!" It fits perfectly hand-in-hand with biblical Creationism, so I wholeheartedly recommend it to bible-believing Christians everywhere!

I read this book a few years ago and at the time, thought it was too extreme and unworkable.

Then, about 6 weeks ago, I read it again, tried this new way of eating and have lost 10 pounds so far.

It takes some getting used to, but you don't have to restrict calories, you just have to eat plenty of LEAN protein (unlike the Atkins diet), and plenty of fruits and veggies. No dairy, no grains, no legumes, no sugars. Yikes! For most Americans, used to eating bread, pasta, potatoes, milk, ice cream, cheese, etc., it will seem like blasphemy to give those things up.

Try it and you'll be surprised. I'm a cheese hound, love desserts, and have eaten my share of pasta, rice, bread and potatoes. I don't crave these things the way I used to, although don't get me wrong, I still like them. I just eat them occasionally and find that eating the paleo way is quite satisfying and my desire for the other foods has diminished greatly.

This being my first pregnancy, I have read almost every book out there on having a healthy, safe pregnancy (especially one with twins). I guess ALL those other books are idiots because according to these two vegans, you shouldn't eat meat, fish, eggs, milk...essentially every single thing the other books and medical doctors insist are VITAL to a healthy pregnancy.
They berate and belittle the very organizations that make our food safe i.e. EPA, USDA, FDA, making them sound like a bunch of middle schoolers.
This book dedicates an entire chapter on slaughter houses. Methods for killing animals, testimonials from slaughterhouse employees. While I agree it is disgusting, if true, this book is not the place to educate us on the practices of killing animals. Basically, I feel this book was just a soapbox for these 2 women to try and get all women, pregnant or not, to give up all foods that are healthy and necessary for the vegan lifestyle. not gonna happen here.

This is a great book for information on being a healthy prego. If you have read Skinny Bitch some of the chapters can be skipped since they are repeated and I honestly didn't want to read about animal abuse again. I do wish this book would focus exclusively on pregnancy when it seems alot was just rewritten for a new book. I also wish they had talked about possible interference of hormones with soy products during pregnancy. I recommend this book though along with Bitch in the Kitch.

A Bad Choice for Many

I am not at all squeamish about cussing or euphemisms for the vagina. I love strong women who are empowered and informed and strive to be one myself. And it is in that vein that I question everything I read. Furthermore, I love to laugh. That being said...

I purchased this book forgetting that the reason I hadn't bought the other Skinny Bitch books was because I had read somewhere that they espouse a vegan diet. Blame the pregnancy hormones for forgetting something that important. I was a vegetarian for fifteen years and perhaps I just really suck at nutrition but it was not the best choice for me personally. Similarly, this book is not the best choice for many people. Being a vegan is not a lifestyle anyone should adopt because someone writes and sells a book that uses scare tactics - and that is precisely the manner in which this book is written. To an extent, what is most troublesome about this book is not the content but the tone. There is a certain moral superiority akin to zealotry in the writing that is disconcerting. What I find further disturbing is that, essentially, the authors prey on women at a time when they may be hyper sensitive regarding the choices they are making and may be stepping outside of their comfort zones to seek information and support. Adopting a vegan lifestyle is one option however it is not the only option nor is it the best option for everyone. If you are already a vegan, you probably will not be reading anything you don't already know about if you purchase this book. If you are considering transitioning into vegan diet while pregnant, speak with your doctor. It is a serious decision and not one that should be guided by a book that's not upfront with its agenda. It makes you wonder, what else are the authors not being upfront about? As a reader and lover of books, the constant use of counterclaim (we're just telling you that the entire dairy industry is corrupt so you won't have a four headed baby, etc) is extremely tedious and actually undermines their argument. It begs the question, why did the authors feel they needed to constantly discount common sense in order to keep me reading?

This is my first pregnancy and so after realizing I had wasted an hour and fifteen bucks (I really should have known to stop at the "Bitchclaimer") I could have spent on something I would have enjoyed reading, my wonderful husband ran out and got me good old What to Expect.... In terms of nutritional content, it far superior in terms of the voice it is written in, the scope of the information, the accessibility of the information and it is not at all the pedestrian read I thought it would be.

Lastly, I did pick up the book again thinking it might have some nifty vegan recipes for mud masks or stretch mark prevention or some other concern. Well, even if it did, I couldn't find any. There is no index and the chapters are obscurely titled. So in addition to all my other gripes, this book is not user friendly and frankly I've got enough on my plate (pardon the pun) with the vomiting, headaches, ginormous breasts and first time mommy worries, to be reading about cows pooping when all I want to know is if I'm allowed to eat papaya.

PS: Oh, and if the authors read this and decide to get up in arms - let me throw a little of your ubiquitous scattershot counterclaiming back at you - the word vegan does appear. It is buried on the second page of the forward. It might appear elsewhere but I would require and index to find it and I guess and this book is just not meaty (again, pardon the pun) to warrant one.

This book is meant to scare ppl into becoming vegan

Don't let the cute cover and catchy title of this book deceive you. I was given this book as a gift recently and am currently pregnant. In NO WAY is this book helpful to any pregnant woman who is not looking to convert to veganism. This book isn't even targeted at vegans because throughout it you are instructed to stop eating animal products and the brainwashing mantra "you and your baby are what you eat" is repeated after every anti-meat message. There are so many half-truths and exaggerations in this book it's diffucult to pick out any useful information. The authors' attempt to frighten pregnant women into thinking they are destroying their unborn babies by drinking a glass of cows milk or by having a plate of scrambled eggs is completely ludicrous. PETA must have given the authors some kickbacks for getting this published with all of the graphic depictions of "animal cruelty" in this book that is supposed to be about pregnancy. These Skinny Bitches are Vegan Nazis and I hope non-vegan women read this warning before they waste money on this worthless propaganda.

This was a good read for vegan women

I found this book fun to read simply because there are NO current day books out there that focus on veganism and pregnancy.

I also understand the authors "style" of writing, so their cursing and "in your face" approach didn't really bother me because I knew what to expect.

A fews things you may have to be concerned with is:

1) that this book's audience is most likely middle class people who live in locations where a whole foods vegan diet is "easy". I question how feasible any whole foods diet is (vegan or omnivorous) for people who are the working poor in this country and located in areas such as the inner city, in which there have been a plethora of public health reports indicating that there are no farmer's markets, natural grocers, or health options available.

2) this book kind of assumes all pregnant women reading this book are straight and married to a man. If you are lesbian identified woman, the heterosexual oriented nature of the book may irk you. If you are a single woman looking to become pregnant or are already pregnant, it may irk you a bit.

However, I commend that fact that the authors wrote this book, simply because NO ONE ELSE IS providing current books on how to achieve a healthy vegan pregnancy.

This is a really good book but I found it a little hard to read and I enjoy reading medical books. I do like that it's entirely about the mental aspect of thryoid disease unlike most other books that just explain all the symptoms in a basic way. This devles into so much about depression and anxiety and the changes relative to your thyroid hormones. I was shocked how much the two relate to each other and was happy to know I'm not crazy...it's my thyroid! :)

My husband, though very active and a healthy weight, was diagnosed with type II diabetes about 5 years ago. This cookbook has been a Godsend for me. He has a sweet tooth and is also sort of a "meat and potatoes" kind of guy. This cookbook is full of delicious recipes that satisfy his appetites, the recipes are easy to fix and best of all, the ingredients are readily available no matter where you live.
I also love the spiral binding that allows the book to lay flat.
Even if you're not a diabetic but just want to watch your carb/sugar intake or are looking for a more healthy way to eat then this is a wonderful addition to your cookbook library. I use mine at least once a week.

This kit is a great introduction to safe and practical energy work that will gradually lift, harmonize and rebalance your systems. Anyone wanting to start healing themselves should buy it in my opinion; it's my first recommend in the field of spiritual self-healing. In terms of effectiveness, easy learnability, safety and even fun, these practices have outperformed everything else I've tried that was similar, including some forms of qigong and tai chi. You can see for yourself that there are 43 positive reviews written prior to mine, and not a single negative one.

Most of the exercises given here have been very helpful to me, and a couple have practically revolutionized my existence. There were also a couple that didn't seem to do good things for me, but perhaps I should have expected that, as my energy system does behave rather oddly at times.

The presentation is excellent. There's a crystal, which I didn't use much, plus a DVD and a CD. The DVD is a recording of a workshop with Eden herself, demonstrating the techniques with a small studio audience, and the CD is her speaking directly to the listener and describing further techniques. You will have no trouble learning her ideas or methods, she communicates them perfectly.

To me the most valuable thing in the kit was the deck of cards. As opposed to putting the exercises in book format, 43 cards are provided which detail one exercise per card. This has been so useful to me. I do two meditation sessions every day; in the morning, I have a stack of cards ready with my personal group of exercises (including the basic exercises Eden says are most important). I change these every now and then, and swap cards in and out from my regular exercises according to what I need in a given week. In the evening I experiment more, thumbing through the rest of the deck and picking out more things to try. As a result I have gradually tried everything and worked out what's good for me in a very improvisational way.

Also in the kit is a slim booklet written by Eden, containing some basic energy information and autobiographical details. She is as warm, sincere and sensitive as one would expect, and she is also highly intelligent and inspiring on her subject matter.

I give this kit my warmest recommendation.

This kit is incredibly practical

Being a Type A personality, my 1st impression was that Donna was a bit flaky & I wasn't sure what I bought into. However, I was so interested in the concept that I continued watching and I am so glad that I did! In the short time that it took to watch the DVD & do the extremely simple techniques I felt wonderful; more energetic & happy with an overall sense of well being! Using what I have learned I have effortlessly eliminated a 30 year history of migraines & curbed insomnia (I'm dreaming again! REM sleep is wonderful!) I literally feel like a new person or at 42 maybe a 20 year younger version of myself! This is about as close to waving a magic wand as it gets and it is so empowering to be able to do these things to/for yourself & others - self healing. Friends & family are enjoying the benefits of what I learned. Way too good to not share! My teenage daughter (18) tells me that she has never felt so insightful, purposeful and focused & I've noticed she seems happier and to carry herself with more confidence. I am so deeply impressed & amazed!

A notable point of interest - I can't see why anybody, regardless of physical constraints could not either do these things themselves or have someone help. This kit is for anybody and everybody! Thank you Donna & I affectionately change flaky to quirky! :)

I can't believe how much useful "stuff" I got for my money! WOW! You get a cd, a DVD, a set of illustrated cards, the guide booklet, and the crystal that comes in a nice little velveteen bag. The quality is wonderful and the whole thing is very helpful. The guidebook is in-depth enough that I am glad I didn't order the "Energy Medicine" book yet-- I think it would be TOO in-depth for me just yet. But this set is perfect.

The CD contains 23 tracks, including the basic Five-Minute Routine, Relaxing More Deeply, If You Feel A Cold Coming On, To Release Tension, For a Tension Headache, Feeling Nervous, Moving Rage Out of Your Body, Calming Yourself or Your Kids, For High Blood Pressure, For Low Blood Pressure and Fatigue, For Insomnia, and so much more!

Either the CD or the DVD alone, or the guidebook and crystal and card set alone, would have been worth the price that I paid! Thank you thank you Ms. Eden!

I can't believe no one has reviewed this yet. It is definitely a worthy companion to the actual Abs Diet book. This book alone can do wonders for your diet in my opinion. Tons of health tips!

Plenty of unhelpful recipes

This book has some good information and recipes... but there's a lot that are sort of a joke/waste of space. I don't need this sort book to contain recipes that are naturally gluten-free like salads and chili, etc. There is also a tendency to include recipes like Mac and Cheese but the way that it becomes gluten-free is the recipe states that you use gluten-free macaroni (duh). The recipes for things like homemade pasta and bread are much more useful.

Wow!

I checked out a number of gluten free cookbooks from my local library, This is the one that I selected after testing a couple of recipes from each book. I knew that I would like this book even before I placed my order on Monday, July 21. What I didn't expect was to have the book delivered to my door on Wednesday morning, July 23! Wow!

The salmon quiche is fantastic! As a new-found celiac, I thought I'd never be able to eat pasta again. I'm truly looking forward to cooking substantially more from this "life-saving" book.

my fav and trusted GF cook. guaranteed great results. can trust the texture and flavour of food is wonderful and so similar to 'normal' food the same. much prefer her gluten free flour mixes than packaged stuff from the supermarket.

Big disappointment!

The front cover of this book shows a mouth-watering chicken pot pie with a gorgeous crust. That's what interested me in the book. But guess what, the crust recipe is not included! When I person needs to cook gluten-free, it's pretty simple to figure out what recipes are OK--salad, cheese and eggs, chicken and other meats, etc. What you need a book to teach you is how to make breads, pie crusts, and stuff like that. This book has a few good recipes, but it's definitely not worth what I paid for it -- and I didn't pay full price, I bought a used version that looks totally new... maybe the last owner found out what I did: this cookbook is a disappointment.

I love this cookbook. The title is not misleading: recipes are really ready that fast. And who knew cauliflower could be so tasty? If you are trying to maintain low carb eating, these recipes are a delight. There is great variety and they're delicious. There were a couple of odd ball ingredients in a few recipes, but those were surprisingly quite easy to find in my local grocery store once I knew to look for them. This book makes it nearly effortless to cook low carb and keep meals interesting. After years of devotion to Cooking Light (which I still like) this is my new go-to book for meals.

When I first received this book, I was a little disappointed because its a small book (approx. 6" x 8") with paperback-type pages. This is not the full-color, glossy pictures of recipes cookbooks. As soon I began scanning the pages of the recipes, I was no longer disappointed.

The book has page after page of delicious, mouth-watering recipes. It isn't filled with makeover recipes that require hard to find ingredients but foods that are naturally low-carb. Dana Carpender does use Splenda in her recipes so beware if you do not like to use Splenda.

If you are looking for a cookbook offering quick, easy, delicious, low-carb recipes then you will enjoy Dana Carpender's 15 minute Low-Carb recipes.

Sorry.. but very disappointed In the use of Artificial Sweeteners in so many of the recipes.. especially the deserts.. In a healthier world we should be getting away from the chemicals.. It's only a matter of time till we find out what the latest man made sweetener is doing to our bodies.. I wish the author would have used another ingredient..

I purchased this book at COSTCO for very cheap. I've been on the lowcarb lifestyle off and on.

The recipes are 15 minutes start to finish and taste great. I am considered a very good cook by friends and family and have been impressed with the wide range of flavors. Other reviews of "very hard to find ingredients" is just not true. This has become our go-to recipe book for the week when we come home from work.

Favorite recipes:

Easy Mexican Chicken
Microwaved Fish and Asparagus with Terragon Mustard
Sweet and Sour Pork (also we've made with chicken)
Balsamic Lamb Skillet (also made with Beef)
Chicken Skillet Roma
Chili Burgers
Asian Pork and Cabbage
Unstuffed Cababage

Get this book---it's great!

Finally an answer to why I couldn't lose weight!

After trying both Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig several times and losing only 5-8 pounds after months of dieting, I finally found out why I couldn't lose weight -- I had insulin resistance. I bought this book and started linking and balancing protein, fiber and carbs the way the book recommends and my weight is finally coming off. I totally recommend this book. :-)

A good starting point

I don't want to just repeat what so many other reviewers have already said. So suffice it to say that I also enjoyed reading this book and have found a wealth of useful knowledge in it.

However, a few points that I haven't seen mentioned yet...

-- Insulin resistance increases a person's risk of heart disease. The authors awknowledge this and briefly suggest making food choices that reflect a "heart healthy" lifestyle. However, they also tell the reader not to worry about salt intake and many of the items on their food lists are very high in sodium. This is not at all heart healthy. Watching my salt intake is fairly easy, but it does add a layer of complexity to this plan that is not advertised.

-- The only focus of this book is weight loss. There is no mention of how to tweak the plan for weight maintenance. I am trying to reverse my insulin resistance (and PCOS), but I am not overweight. There isn't a single sentence in this book that addresses my situation.

-- There is a heavy reliance on artificial sweeteners. For those who do not use artificial sweeteners, a level of complexity is added to the plan.

-- One of the selling points of this plan is that there is nothing to count. That is technically true. But there is a lot of estimating to be done. Some people see great success with estimating and keeping things in their heads. I prefer to be a little more exact. Again, it's not hard to count carbs and proteins and keep track of calories (rather than estimating them), but it adds a level of complexity.

So, because I'm a bit of a perfectionist, I've made this plan a little more complicated than it was originally advertised. But I still enjoy following it and I hope to see my insulin resistance reverse over time.

All my life I have struggled with my weight. I recently discovered what I had was Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, and have insulin resistance. This book is very clear on what combinations of food work together, and which to avoid. I have lost 5 lbs so far without very much effort at all. In fact, I am eating more now, and enjoying it more.

It works...
