This is the cookbook for me. I am not only trying to watch what I eat it needs to be fast and simple. I fell in love with the chicken and ham pot pie, this was really a surprise as I am not a fan of pot pies. I am in the process of exploring different recipes so far they have all been great And the taste is marvelous.

I wanted to start being a bit healthier about what I was making for dinner so I bought this cookbook. It has many tastey and healthy receipes to choose from. There are breakfast, lunch, and dinner receipes included for 15, 20, 30 min. I would say this is the cookbook I use the most.

I'm always looking for healthier options for meals and this book is great for that! I've only tried a couple so far but they've been very tasty and relatively easy to prepare, even for me, a total beginner in the kitchen! They did take a little longer than the 15, 20, or 30 minutes, but that could have been because I'm kind of new at preparing meals so I'm probably slower than the average cook. I'm very happy with my purchase and plan to use it alot!

I love this cookboook. Everything I have tried is delicious and easy. One of my favorites is a black bean salad with corn and avocado. I have tried the Texas Cavier, Cauliflower soup, a chocolate shake, and a fruit salad. All were excellent. Highly recommended.

I can tell you from my experience in buying this particular WW book that the recipe's are fantastic and all stay true to the timing of the recipe's! Even the 10 minute meals are GREAT!! My hubby was skeptical about eating the 30 minute meals and he absolutely loves them and NOW HE is making them! He's really the better chef in this house since he retired and he absolutely loves this cook book! You WILL lose weight with this book if you follow the instructions and get the right ingredients-don't worry!! And you'll NOT BE SORRY you got this book-that's for sure. I had a hard time choosing which one to start with and I'm so happy I chose THIS ONE b/c of it having 10, 20 and 30 minute recipe's.
Also don't forget to buy yourself a WW calculator-it's an tool that is very valuable for days when you're on the go and don't have time to cook anything in this book! You can get them on Ebay for $20 if you look around and not have to pay tax OR shipping. I got mine from some place called something like: Treetop Collectables or something close to that. I just know it is GREAT and a HUGE HUGE HELP as this book I got at Amazon. Also, I was shocked to buy this book from Amazon and get it TWO DAYS LATER!!! I didn't pay extra for fast shipping either-got the free shipping and presto-I had the book so fast I was shocked!! Folks, we live out in the boonies and they STILL got me this book so quickly after I ordered it-it was unreal!!
You won't regret buying this book-trust me!! It is GREAT!!!!!!!!

Outstanding You: Discover, Design and Achieve Ultimate Fitness
I wish I'd had a chance to get a hold of this book earlier in my vegan lifestyle. It's been 12 years since I started down this vegetarian path - and I can assure you, it was tough at times. Reading this book years into my new lifestyle, I was thrilled to have the kind of support and reassurance this book provides. I recommend it for anyone starting or new to a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle. I'm the author of Outstanding You - and this book is a must-read.

This is not a book of emotional testimonials of how people's lives dramatically improved with their change in diet. It is about the facts, the statistics, the things I can tell the people in my personal life about when they ask me 'why go vegan?'
It's also shown me what foods I can intake and what supplements I should look into to complete a balanced diet.
I highly recommend this book to those wondering why so many people are going vegan and to those who are already vegan and want to get more facts on their side and are concerned about getting all the appropriate nutrients.

I am very impressed with this book. I became interested in veganism after quite a bit of research into the treatment of animals in slaughterhouses, egg farms, etc. As a professed animal lover, I just could not bring myself to support that industry anymore. The Becoming Vegan book explained so much more to further solidify my conviction. I especially appreciate the section on how to "fit in" at gatherings with friends and family.

This book was very helpful for deciding what new products to try. But I feel you should take her critiques with a grain of salt. If your already using a product and you find it works for you I don't see why you should discontinue the use just because she dislikes the product. Overall it was very informational and I feel I am that much more aware of what I put on my skin.

A no-muss no-fuss review of the cosmetic world -- be brave about the somewhat intimidating thickness as most of the pages or specific to product reviews. The actual information is a quick and useful read both front and back, then use the material in the middle to fill in answers to your questions. Highly recommend -- glad I purchased.

Wow! This book really stands out with its scientific references. How often do you find complete references including even the page numbers of the scientific journal, in a popular book? I thoroughly enjoyed this book even though cosmetics are not really my thing (I'm too lazy or "busy" to bother). Now I actually find myself using face creams and sunscreens. I used to think all cosmetic products were a waste of money but now I'm convinced that some products actually do help the skin.
Some of the critical reviewers here have clearly not read the book very well. I don't know where they get the idea that Begoun is against natural ingredients or plant oils. Quite the contrary, her own products are full of these and nowhere in the book did she say that she is against them. What she is against is using natural ingredients (or any ingredients) that have not been proven effective by scientific studies. In other words, she only wants to use those natural ingredients that actually work.
The same goes for essential oils. She is not againts using them if they have proven to be effective. Some essential oils have been and you can find those in her own products. What she does not like is for essential oils to be added to products solely because of the scent. And I agree: why would you want to put ANYTHING on your skin that does not have any purpose? If you want to enjoy the scent of essential oils you can use them in candles or spray them onto your clothes. You don't have to expose your skin to something that nobody really knows very much about.

I've bought the last 3 editions of this book, and each one has saved me tons of money. Paula's reviews are fair and accurate - even though we disagree on a few key items. Any time I make a new beauty purchase I first check it out in her book. It's astonishing how much better quality product is offered in drug stores these days. I highly recommend this book.

I got Paula's 2003 edition in 2006, but was sorry that it was rather outdated and in that edition she said she wouldn't be doing another one. So I was happily surprised to find a brand new edition in Barnes & Noble, and after perusing it I plan to order it from Amazon. A few comments: Some reviewers claim Paula gives negative reviews to most product so she can push her own line. I don't agree with that. In fact, in the 2003 edition which I have, she includes descriptions of her products but decided not to even rate them. I think in the new edition she DOES rate them finally. As someone who has really been a makeup junkie, particularly with trying out skin care products, I found her descriptions and evaluations extremely useful. I have tried cheap products and very expensive ones, and have found things I loved in both categories. One thing I DO believe is that the highly expensive products cannot really justify the high price tags. My own experience has shown that more expensive is not necessarily better. And cheap isn't necessarily bad. My own favorite cleanser, discovered by accident many years ago, is Cetaphil, and Paula rates that one highly. I just ordered a bunch of Paula's own product samples, and from what I can tell from small samples, I like them a lot, particularly her concealers. None of them irritated my skin. I've had a lot of trouble with sensitivity and skin scrubs, so I'm anxious to try her AHA gels instead of using granular type scrubs. By the way, the information on her website is useful and her lectures are interesting. Paula knows a lot and she has been studying and evaluating skin care for a long time. This book represents an enormous compilation of work, and there is nothing else like it out there. You may not agree with all of her opinions (for example, although I had hoped I wouldn't like it, I really do like Creme de la Mer despite its outrageous price, and I've found it soothing to my skin when it is in a reddish, upset state. I'd like to find a cheap clone of it, but thus far have not found one). The point is, you can use her reviews as a starting place for your cosmetics purchases. The fact is, cosmetics companies really do take advantage of us all and our desire to look good. I think we'd all admit that there are some truly outrageous prices out there, and after years of trying things, I have to admit I haven't found any miracles yet. It's a full circle, and I'm back to the point of trying to find products to cleanse and moisturize without irritating my skin. Nothing fancy is really needed. One interesting thing Paula provides is information where there is huge product overlap (example: all Olay's lines, with older ones now being cheaper and the newest ones costing quite a bit more. Yet, considering their ingredients, there is no real difference between them....you just pay more for the newer ones!!). All the beauty magazines feature various products (obviously "paid" by cosmetic companies to do so), and it's nice to find out more details about what these "really" are. In short, this is a great and very useful book if you approach it with the right attitude. For products I like, it's nice to learn exactly what component of the products creates the effect I like, too.

If you are determined to follow this "flax-oil and cottage-cheese (or quark-cheese)" diet, say you found out about it somewhere else, e.g., [...], you'll welcome Dr. Budwig's own little book of over 500 recipes. I took heart when I saw that I could still have plenty of interesting deserts, even "ice creams" made with the recipe(s) in the book. But there are lots of other dishes and courses to keep life interesting. Although cooking and sautéing with butter, lard, margarine and almost any vegetable oil is a "no-no" - because the heat breaks them down into toxic components, it is still possible to cook, carefully, with pure cocoanut oil - a solid at room temperature. If you are a creative cook, after mastering preparing the basic ingredients and principles, you should have no trouble coming up with your own delicious recipes. The book mentions that fresh fish (non-farmed) and game (free-run poultry?) are permissible sources of protein. I cook these by baking or poaching rather than pan-frying.

I became quite interested in Dr. Budwig's work through research. My chemistry skills are pretty old, so I struggled mightily through her lectures embodied in the companion volume "Flas Oil As a True Aid ..." etc.
Now, this book is supposed to be a cookbook. The substantial value of the diet is the preparation of the flax-based key ingredients that are then replicated in every ensuing recipe.
What this book needed was a decent editor. It is a translation of work that was mainly done 60 years ago! One cannot go to Germany circa 1960 in order to implement the food plan, and so the editors needed to do just a little bit of work to make this relatively painless for implementation.
There is virtually NO decent editing work done here, and the references to Dr. Budwig's patented, offered products is not suitable. For instance, one of the key ingredients in these recipes is a "Muesli" carefully designed by Dr. Budwig. (One of her colleagues stated that he wished the beneficiaries of this diet - the users - all had a PhD in chemistry so they could understand the quality of Dr. Budwig's work.)
This Muesli ("Linomel") was once branded by Dr. Budwig, apparently, and the book references an 800 number to call. However, when you do call, they tell you that was a "misprint" in the book, and that they sell flax seed oil, and not "Linomel," Dr. Budwig's patented product.
The fact is, you will look in vain for what Linomel truly is, and therefore will have to go without it. Some internet sites tell you to simply use 4 teaspoons of freshly-ground flax seeds, and to eat them within 20 minutes. Others simply replace it with flax seed oil and cottage cheese, which, in the book, is called something else.
Therefore, when buying this book, be prepared to do a whole lot of head-scratching and web searching to get the basic ingredients down.
Also, be prepared to pay a fortune for your flax seed oil, as the cheapest it can be found, even buying bulk, is $12.50/qt. More likely you will be paying around $15 per cup!

I've been a fan of Robert A. Johnson's work for many years. He was a student of Carl Jung at the Jung Institute in Switzerland. He uses mythological themes to illuminate human situations. In this book, he uses the story of Castor and Pollux to talk about the dimensions of human consciousness(one foot in conscious awareness, another foot in the underworld of the unconscious). As with many of his books, he advocates paying attention to our night dreams and trying to discover the themes that are happening in the unconscious. He wants us to engage the figures of the unconscious in active dialog, a technique called "active imagination".

From John Howard Prin, author of Secret Keeping: Overcoming Hidden Habits and Addictions
I heartily recommend this book for everyone who yearns to live their dream. The authors have packed much wisdom into 200+ pages, all in a highly readable style. Their insights opened up many mysteries of the unconscious for me and showed healthy ways to experience freedom and fulfillment...to drink life to the last drop.
What I learned was: No matter what path in life we choose, other paths must go "unchosen." Some of those unchosen paths are deeply connected to who we really are and want to be, but priorities during our growing-up years such as college, career, marriage, and raising a family often trump them. As we build our lives, certain key choices naturally go excluded.
When an early gift for music gets put aside in adolescence, for example, it can lurk in the shadows for decades -- calling for our attention and demanding a stronger presence in our lives. Gifts and talents like these, long "unlived," become more insistent as we reach mid-life and beg for expression and full appreciation. Whenever possible, we should get out of our comfort zone and "just do it," rather than waiting until it's too late. As the popularity of the movie The Bucket List attests, this message resonates strongly among millions of people.
But whenever our limits or circumstances make it impossible, there is still good news -- there is another way, an inner way. The authors explain how using techniques such as "active imagination" can fulfill one's potential and lead to lasting satisfaction, rather than our having to wallow in neurotic suffering. Simply put, living symbolically -- and many useful passages demonstrate how -- is the avenue to satisfying our hunger for the unlived life "without upending the life you have worked so hard to build."
Thankfully, LIVING YOUR UNLIVED LIFE shows us ways to live out these tensions in healthy ways and to experience the fulfillment of a well-rounded life that we all long for.

Because this book is written from a New Age / Eastern spiritual perspective, it conflicts with my Christian beliefs and worldview. I borrowed it from a libary because of its very appealing title. If you're into New Age and Eastern spiritually, you might enjoy this book. I encourage you to read 5-star reviews. It's a zero-star book for me, but I gave it 3 stars since I can't evaluate it from a New Age point-of-view.

The guidance I sought in reading this book was unrealized. It has many good thoughts such as, "bringing the calmness and focus of being into doing activities is a supreme achievement.""In the second half of life it is not so much what you do that matters; it is the level of consciousness that you bring to your doing." Its many examples are based on Jungian theory and practices. If you have the background, the reading might be more enjoyable.

I wish the sugar free recipes weren't prepared with Splenda. I personally use agave nectar or stevia to bake my desserts. Stevia can be funky to bake with but it's possible with practice and agave nectar is simply magic. It's a low glycemic fructose from a mexican cactus and it can be used in coffee, in any beverages or smoothies, pies, muffins, etc...
The other recipes look quite interesting but there's nothing exceptional here. Like the title of this message says: Can I return this book?

There are all kinds of diet books on the market. Whatever you want to try, there is a diet for it. Though I have not specifically tried the "No flour, No Sugar" diet by Dr. Gott, I have read the cookbook and found it extremely useful. A member of my family is gluten intolerant and, while not all of these recipes are gluten free (please note: some people who are gluten intolerant cannot eat oats, a main staple of Dr. Gott's), enough of them are that I am able to use them to extend what my family does eat.
The recipes are easy to follow, healthful and there are enough to keep you cooking for weeks. What is missing from this book are dietary specifics. I rarely buy a cookbook that doesn't include a breakdown of calories, fats, protein, etc. per serving. With this book, I will have to plug the recipe into a program I have and do all the calculations myself. I'd rather see some numbers in the book than have to do all this myself. Also, he is a huge promoter of "Splenda" - a product I and others in my family do not care for. Nor do we care for other artificial sweeteners. But he does give you enough alternatives such as Stevia (though there are caveats about this herb), and syrups made from fruits.
As with most cookbooks, you will find some recipes you love and some you will not. But take a chance and try them. What do you have to lose - besides the weight? All that being said, if you are a proponent of the No Flour, No Sugar diet, then this is a good companion to that book.

I had never heard of Dr. Gott's no flour, no sugar diet when I first found this cookbook. I must admit that I was instantly skeptical when I saw the title....no flour and no sugar? Would it be possible to make edible food without these two supposedly essential ingredients? As I began to flip through the recipes, my skepticism started to wane. Breakfast Apple Pie? Sounds appealing. Faux Spaghetti? Intriguing. Mandarin Mousse? Fabulous!
I instantly headed toward the kitchen to try some of the recipes. My first endeavor was the eggs in nests. What a great snack and super easy to make! Further tries on the recipes were just as easy and just as tasty. I was won over in just a few recipes. This book gives you recipes that are easy to make, full of flavor, and plentiful enough that you can eat from this plan quite regularly, if not full time. My one complaint is that there are a ton of seafood-based recipes in the book. If you are not a fan of seafood, you will have some challenges with variety in this diet.
One of the best features of the book is that it goes beyond just the recipes. Dr. Gott's diet is encapsulated in a few introductory chapters and gives a good overview of why a sugar and flour free diet is beneficial. It also gives tips and tricks for surviving the world outside your kitchen, avoid the yo-yo diet pitfalls, and how border line foods such as alcohol and chocolate should be dealt with. It helps take all the great recipes and fit them into a healthy and well-rounded diet.
Chock full of easy-to-make recipes that taste great, this book will be great for anyone looking to enjoy a healthy diet and limit their flour and sugar intake.

I bought this book because of a recommendation by someone that had implemented, and kept using Ultra-Metabolism "steps" with great success. Upon reading Ultra-Metabolism, I recognized information I use and share...all the time.
Why read or buy another "weight-loss" book when the Seven Keys to the New Science of Weight Loss are listed on page 73-74? According to Dr. Hyman, everyone has his or her own instruction manual. So why purchase this book? I would suggest that you download guides from www.ultrametabolism.com. This may be enough for you. The book serves as support and offers reminders to help people keep on track.
Ultra-Metabolism quizzes you and guides you, step-by-step, to deciphering your own metabolism, and a whole lot more, in what he calls an "Ultra-Metabolism Prescription". Again, Dr. Hyman instructs us that this is the basis for generating the right instructions to your own body, through diet, and ... Ultra-Metabolism.
Dr. Hyman follows the premise of food containing information to talk to our genes, or "Nutrigenomics". In addition to offering exciting, cutting-edge research, he offers nutritionally-sound advice on how you can talk to your genes: Eat real, whole foods; eat foods high in phytonutrients; eat foods with a low glycemic to control appetite; eat more fiber intake to lower body fat; get your meal timing right to help turn on your metabolism; reduce stress (stress makes you fat, relaxation makes you thin); exercise in a manner that turns on metabolism; and reduce inflammation.
"Eat breakfast daily: Spread your food intake and calories throughout the day; Wait at least two to three hours after your last meal before going to sleep."
Where have you heard this before?
Another example of simple, effective suggestions are supplements to consider when you are turning on Ultra-Metabolism:
"1. A multivitamin and mineral combination. 2. A balanced, absorbable calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D supplement. 3. An omega-3 fatty acid supplement.
Many people do very well with a structured approach to weight loss. As the reader would expect, Dr. Hyman guides you to natural weight loss, step-by-step. Starting with Step one: Detoxifying the liver.
In addition to offering a plethora of practical, easy-to-implement weight loss suggestions, the author busts a few "myths" while promoting education. He includes information regarding "Nutrition", and how we come to think about food:
P. 66 The food industry generates more than a trillion dollars in annual sales, accounts for 12 percent of the U.S. gross national product (GNP), and employees 17 percent of the country's labor force. It spends more than $33 billion a year on marketing alone. Seventy percent of those dollars go to pushing fast food, convenience foods, candy, snacks, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, and desert. Only 2.2 percent of those marketing dollars are spent on advertising for fruit, vegetables, grains or beans.
I also enjoyed Dr. Hyman inclusion of relevant and stimulating quotes:
"Life is the art of drawing sufficient conclusions from insufficient premises."
Samuel Butler
As you would expect, Dr. Hyman offers the usual faire of delicious, natural recipes, and Ultra-Metabolism possesses its fair share of "buzz-words". Ultra-Metabolism also includes Dr. Hyman's attempt to generate an on-line Ultra-Metabolism community, which comes off as a bit far fetched. However, taking cues from various weight-watching groups, his efforts may very well bear fruit.
The "Food is Medicine" premise of Ultra-Metabolism focuses this book as excellent "support" literature. Ultra-Metabolism reinforces your healthy lifestyle choices, which, in turn, support your health and wellness. Ultimately, in this "win-win" situation, you gain timely, user-friendly, effective resources and guidance to be well-inform about the choices you may make ... a recipe for success.
I prefer to recommend natural health texts that acknowledge alternative health practices, and their long-time contributions to the health, stress reduction and wellness fields; this acknowledgement was lacking in Ultra-Metabolism. However, given the exceptional nature of this easy-to-follow, reader-oriented book, I am happy to recommend it.

"Ultrametabolism" is by far one of the best books I have ever read on the subject of diet and its effect on your health. As a large endurance athlete struggling to lose a few pounds and keep up my stamina, this book has revealed the misconceptions of the typical low fat or low carb diet and throughly explained why the "calories in/ calories out" equation doesn't seem to work for many people. By learning why to eat whole non processed foods, my friends and I have all begun to shed unwanted pounds and become healthier and stronger in the process. Bravo to Dr. Hyman! Highly recommended and easy to put into action.

I realized that I needed to know more about the glycemic quality of foods since there is diabetes in my family history. I highly recommend this book.

Let me preface the following by stating that I've never been a "dieter", I've always just tried to eat as healthy as I can. And, as a life-long vegetarian I'd never really been able to participate in most fad-diets anyway (I need my carbs!). But, I'd noticed over the past year that even though I work out pretty consistently, my metabolism was changing and I had dramatic drops in blood sugar that left me feeling tired, light headed and nauseous a lot. I read an article about the low GI diet in one of my fitness mags, and it sounded like something I could actually try as a vegetarian. My husband read the same article and felt it was something he could do without eating "diet" foods.
It really isn't meant as a diet to help you lose a lot of weight quickly, it's much more about changing your overall eating habits and combinations of food so that you regulate your digestive track, which in turn controls hunger, crashes/spikes in blood sugar, increases energy, promotes overall long-term health, etc. It actually started as a method of eating for diabetics, but has since been adopted by non-diabetics.
This particular book is great because it explains the science behind it and also has a bunch of recipes and GI values for most foods. I've found that after doing it for 2 full months, I can pretty much make foods without recipes just by being able to judge whether it's a high or low-GI food. I also bought the vegetarian recipe book, and already have a few favorites in it.
Anyway, I've been doing this for about 2 months and really like it - you're not really depriving yourself of much. The only real adjustment is trying to buy organic when possible so there are no preservatives, and cooking a lot more!
Although it shouldn't really be considered a "weight loss diet", I think just the nature of the changes in my diet has led me to loose some weight. I've never considered myself overweight and have always been a healthy eater and consistent gym-rat. But, over the past 2 months, I've lost about 10 lbs - and that is with the occasional cheating, weekly dinners out, plenty of chocolate and wine, and a 2-week respiratory infection where I didn't work out once!
I would definitely recommend this book - and lifestyle - for anyone who is just trying to be, feel, and look more healthy overall without typical diet constraints.

My husband, though very active and a healthy weight, was diagnosed with type II diabetes about 5 years ago. This cookbook has been a Godsend for me. He has a sweet tooth and is also sort of a "meat and potatoes" kind of guy. This cookbook is full of delicious recipes that satisfy his appetites, the recipes are easy to fix and best of all, the ingredients are readily available no matter where you live.
I also love the spiral binding that allows the book to lay flat.
Even if you're not a diabetic but just want to watch your carb/sugar intake or are looking for a more healthy way to eat then this is a wonderful addition to your cookbook library. I use mine at least once a week.

The authors write a book to help you have a healthy baby and the only thing people focus on is the language and "ooh, they want me to go vegan." What did you want them to write?? A book that says, "Eat unhealthy junk and make you and your baby sick." Would that make you feel better? If I were a woman, and was having a baby, I'd be saying, "Thanks for giving me advice on how to have a healthy baby and safe pregnancy." Would you give it 5 stars if they called it "Skinny Bitch: How to Stick Your Head in the Sand and Avoid Reality During Your Pregnancy" Being healthy is not a punishment for you or your child.
Gets a bad rap from short-sighted reviewers

I don't know what the other reviewers are complaining about: this book was not dedicated to animal welfare and was not a PETA advertisement.
Yes, there was talk about slaughterhouses, but this was only one part. And the point of slaughterhouse parts is that you are consuming the fear and grief of the animal through the form of chemicals they release. Not to mention the animals living conditions are disgusting and have the potential to contaminate your food--which you are feeding to your unborn baby.
The book focuses more on the quality of the food products you put in your body. The authors advocate a vegan diet not only because of the condition of farms animals but because it's good for your body. It focuses mainly on the dangers of dairy and disproving most pro-dairy advertisements, pointing to the huge economic impact of the dairy industry as the main reason why the government pushes dairy on the public.
The authors also disapprove of caffeine, alcohol, and artificial and refined sugars, particularly during pregnancy and discuss these substances' affects on an unborn baby. I also found the chapter on breastfeeding particularly interesting and helpful. I had decided not to breastfeed but after reading this chapter, reviewing their research, and talking to my doctor, I have changed my mind and decided to breastfeed/use a breast pump.
Overall this was an informative and interesting book. It gives a lifestyle during pregnancy that is very cautious, and thus I believe this is what really upset the over reviewers--that they didn't want to have to change their lifestyle. But what better time to be so careful with your body than when you're pregnant with your baby!

These girls get mad props for exposing the truth behind the food we eat. Most people don't realize that the dairy & meat industry spend millions and millions on advertising and lobbyists to convince people that unhealthy food is actually healthy. These girls report the truth, backed by peer reviewed published medical studies (the real science & information that doesn't have millions to compete with meat & dairy industries). If you or anyone you know is pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant - this book is essential! If you care about your baby you can't ignore these facts. Bonus is that these authors are damn funny!
WARNING: Horrible, disturbing book-- NOT for pregnant women

This book might be fine if I were looking for a Fast Food Nation-type read, but I agree with the previous reviewer-- this is definitely NOT for pregnant women who are at all sensitive or emotional.
I picked up a review copy at the bookstore where I work, not familiar with the Skinny Bitches and their vegan philosophy. Quite frankly, from the cover art I expected it to be a chick lit-type "sassy" pregnancy guide. I opened to a page at random and read quotes from slaughterhouse employees bragging about the cruelties they had inflicted on farm animals, and describing them in explicit and gloating detail.
This book is much, much more explicit in its descriptions than Fast Food Nation. The cover art and title are completely inappropriate for what this book is, which is a merciless call to veganism (the admittedly brief section I read had nothing at all to do with pregnancy). I really feel that anyone who buys this book due to the cover or the title (and let's face it, a lot of bookstore buys are impulsive in that way) will feel disturbed and duped. Even if I were not 8 months pregnant this book would have made me feel queasy and upset.
I'm not opposed to veganism or exposes of the meatpacking industry (and I keep mentioning Fast Food Nation because it gets the message across without needing to resort to such explicit, almost lascivious gore), but I have to wonder what in the world the publisher was thinking to publish this book the way they did. This is really irresponsible.
