The authors write a book to help you have a healthy baby and the only thing people focus on is the language and "ooh, they want me to go vegan." What did you want them to write?? A book that says, "Eat unhealthy junk and make you and your baby sick." Would that make you feel better? If I were a woman, and was having a baby, I'd be saying, "Thanks for giving me advice on how to have a healthy baby and safe pregnancy." Would you give it 5 stars if they called it "Skinny Bitch: How to Stick Your Head in the Sand and Avoid Reality During Your Pregnancy" Being healthy is not a punishment for you or your child.

I don't know what the other reviewers are complaining about: this book was not dedicated to animal welfare and was not a PETA advertisement.
Yes, there was talk about slaughterhouses, but this was only one part. And the point of slaughterhouse parts is that you are consuming the fear and grief of the animal through the form of chemicals they release. Not to mention the animals living conditions are disgusting and have the potential to contaminate your food--which you are feeding to your unborn baby.
The book focuses more on the quality of the food products you put in your body. The authors advocate a vegan diet not only because of the condition of farms animals but because it's good for your body. It focuses mainly on the dangers of dairy and disproving most pro-dairy advertisements, pointing to the huge economic impact of the dairy industry as the main reason why the government pushes dairy on the public.
The authors also disapprove of caffeine, alcohol, and artificial and refined sugars, particularly during pregnancy and discuss these substances' affects on an unborn baby. I also found the chapter on breastfeeding particularly interesting and helpful. I had decided not to breastfeed but after reading this chapter, reviewing their research, and talking to my doctor, I have changed my mind and decided to breastfeed/use a breast pump.
Overall this was an informative and interesting book. It gives a lifestyle during pregnancy that is very cautious, and thus I believe this is what really upset the over reviewers--that they didn't want to have to change their lifestyle. But what better time to be so careful with your body than when you're pregnant with your baby!

These girls get mad props for exposing the truth behind the food we eat. Most people don't realize that the dairy & meat industry spend millions and millions on advertising and lobbyists to convince people that unhealthy food is actually healthy. These girls report the truth, backed by peer reviewed published medical studies (the real science & information that doesn't have millions to compete with meat & dairy industries). If you or anyone you know is pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant - this book is essential! If you care about your baby you can't ignore these facts. Bonus is that these authors are damn funny!
Buy this ONLY if you want to be a VEGAN!!!

Well, unfortunately, I was completely disappointed with this book from start to finish. I thought the authors might have some important things to say about eating healthy and staying away from processed foods, etc...---but just about the entire book was dedicated to the detailed processes of slaughterhouses, animal welfare, and why it's better to be a vegan. I give them credit however for the amount of research they did for this book--it is very informative and well-written, but a very bad read for a pregnant hormonal woman. Who wants to read about the way chickens, pigs, and cows are treated/slaughtered when all I was looking for was alternative ways to eat in order to better my health for me and my baby??? No, I'm NOT going to be a vegan after reading this book...and quite frankly I'm a little pizzed that they try to push it so hard on a pregant woman!!! But, I did pick up a few good pointers here and there. Not a complete waste of money, but buyer beware--this book is a walking PITA billboard!!! And don't read it if you're hormonal and pregnant--you'll just end up in tears.
WARNING: Horrible, disturbing book-- NOT for pregnant women

This book might be fine if I were looking for a Fast Food Nation-type read, but I agree with the previous reviewer-- this is definitely NOT for pregnant women who are at all sensitive or emotional.
I picked up a review copy at the bookstore where I work, not familiar with the Skinny Bitches and their vegan philosophy. Quite frankly, from the cover art I expected it to be a chick lit-type "sassy" pregnancy guide. I opened to a page at random and read quotes from slaughterhouse employees bragging about the cruelties they had inflicted on farm animals, and describing them in explicit and gloating detail.
This book is much, much more explicit in its descriptions than Fast Food Nation. The cover art and title are completely inappropriate for what this book is, which is a merciless call to veganism (the admittedly brief section I read had nothing at all to do with pregnancy). I really feel that anyone who buys this book due to the cover or the title (and let's face it, a lot of bookstore buys are impulsive in that way) will feel disturbed and duped. Even if I were not 8 months pregnant this book would have made me feel queasy and upset.
I'm not opposed to veganism or exposes of the meatpacking industry (and I keep mentioning Fast Food Nation because it gets the message across without needing to resort to such explicit, almost lascivious gore), but I have to wonder what in the world the publisher was thinking to publish this book the way they did. This is really irresponsible.

Great book of information that makes sense for a change. The medical profession makes more money if people do not know these priceless secrets. I am now on chapter five, my fasting blood sugar has dropped over one hundred points and I am not even into the preparation of foods.

See the You Tube Video Raw for Thirty about diabetics using this program to cure their diabetes.
I find it amazing that of the reviewers that say they have diabetes- every single one said this program lowered their blood sugars and it works. Yet, people give the program a lukewarm review because it is too hard, or there aren't enough recipes, nor an exact diet given. Do you want a program that will help you cure your diabetes or not? This program gets you perfect blood sugar.
I am also a fan of Dr Richard Berenstein's Diabetes Solution. Berenstein says eat enough meat to feel satisfied. I see a lot of overlap between what these doctors are saying- yet one is a vegan rabbi and the other is an advocate of meat eating. That should tell you something. (Eat tons of vegetables, avoid most fruits and starches. Coffee is bad. You need to exercise to control blood sugar and build muscle. All those fake sugars are very bad. Berenstein says most of them don't work to control blood sugar, and Cousins sees them as toxic. )
But Dr Cousins program also brings in a spiritual dimension. You will be physically healthier if you don't eat meat, but especially you will be doing the ethical thing.
The raw foodists might hate my bringing in Berenstein because they believe that cooking food itself is bad (and Cousins gives a lot of research to that effect.) (And most raw foodists are vegan.) But both of these doctors will tell you that as a diabetic you cannot consume the starches, sweet fruits, sugar-free drinks and candies, coffee, etc that the American Diabetes Association recommends. Both will tell you there is big business profiteering on your diabetes. Both will tell you the standard medical approaches to diabetes care usually do more hard than good.
OK- the program is hard. Follow it only if you want to live a long healthy life.
As for not giving a specific program: he gives you formulas and patterns because then you can create endless menus and variety in your meals. He tells you which foods to eat, and which to avoid. He tells you how to juice-feast, four ways to get more greens, how to make green soups, how to make crackers and pates and wraps. He gives some recipes. There are tons of recipes online once you have these guidelines.
And- if your friends think this diet is too "extreme" then please consider that you deserve more support from the people you love. (My friends and family have given me complete support.)
This book is NOT an ad for his workshops. There are about 450 pages and only 10 describing the workshops. Those ten pages explain something that I think is very true- to live on a raw vegan diet, you need to learn about more than just food. (Honestly, to commit to curing your diabetes through any diet, one would probably need to learn about a lot more than food. It is a spiritual journey.)

I have type 2 Diabetes and I was NOT in any of the categories for getting it except age (62) and genetics (my father has it.) My numbers are usually under 100 (with medication and eating not much). I was hoping this book would broaden my gastronomic horizons. Unless one is willing to spend all day preparing and eating (I don't eat between meals) this book is no help.
How would they know if it cures diabetes? How could you possibly find at least 1,000 people who follow this? There is no scientific research to prove it works-- unless they have people living in a secure environment, for at least a three-month period. Otherwise, they really do not know what anyone is doing.
The recipes are heavy with guacamole, which is high in fat; brown rice which spikes my glucose level. After that, it is Swiss-chard a go-go. Don't waste your time or money. No one can use this in the real world.

Almost a third of the United States population is either suffering from Diabetes or are in severe danger. "There is a Cure for Diabetes: The Tree of Life 21-Day+ Program" counters that grim fact with a shining light of optimism, with a three week plan that can assist with reversing type-II diabetes regardless of the history of the patient. A lifestyle change is all that's needed claims MD and author Gabriel Cousens - and "There is a Cure for Diabetes: The Tree of Life 21-Day+ Program" is highly recommended for this and for anyone who fears diabetes, and for community library health collections.
More pseudoscience - save your money and your credibility.

When phrases as ludicrous as "reset the DNA through green juice fasting" appear in the official summary of a book, you know you're in for a fast-talking ride with a quack. Your DNA (remember, the foundational molecules of genetic expression resident in nearly every cell of your body?) does not get "reset" by anything you eat.
Assuming that his approach could possibly be a cure (which would contradict verified principles of diabetic pathology and physiology), it would be great to see Cousens submit an actual clinical study for peer review. Unfortunately, such careful, impartial research isn't quite as profitable as writing a best-seller. Why make sure what you're promoting is true when you can rake in the cash?
Zero stars.

I bought this diet book because it sounds very sensible in his daily column. I really don't think I got much more information from the book than was in the newspaper, but it might be helpful for those who don't get his column in a newspaper. I also bought the cookbook that goes with it. Haven't made anything from it yet, but intend to soon.

I have gone through the menu's and the 'mission statement' to understand the author's message. I have long believed that sugar and flour were the culprits of bloating and weight gain, so I gave them up awhile ago. However, this book gives you info about foods you wouldn't suspect to contain sugar or bleached flour, which explains a lot about my very slow weight loss.
Read labels carefully!!
The menu's are satisfying and tasty, however, cooking breakfast is a chore for me.
This is a commonsense guide to eating right and ridding your body of garbage it doesn't need. It is not a 'fad' diet. It is a lifelong eating habit which should be followed, and you might just see some overall improvements in your health besides losing weight.

This book is extremely comprehensive. It is the first book about becoming vegetarian that I have read but I am completely satisfied that it covers all the requirements of a vegetarian diet. I would also recommend this book to non-vegetarians, particularly those seeking to reduce meat intake and increase nutrition from plant foods.

I have been using Corbin books in my wellness / fitness practice since the early 80's. In 1981 I moved to Houston, Texas and started to manage the Tenneco fitness center. We saw over 1,000 employees using the facility a day and faced a huge challenge of moving past the 20% of the population that already kept in shape daily.
Corbin books were "real", about real efforts in real environments. I could sit down and read a little of Corbin and not only pick up tips for my coach counseling, but also ideas for group challenges or behavior change efforts.
I have had plenty of mentors along my 30 years of worksite programming and many of them I have become good friends, but Corbin is one I have never met, but highly respect for his work and what he has given the fitness and wellness field.
I have a spot on my book shelf that is "Corbin" books and I bet after you have bought this one and used it, you will go back and start like me a little Corbin library. I can't imagine a wellness practitioner without Corbin on their book shelf.

Even though this books was a required textbook for college, I am glad I had to pick it up. There has been some really good information in this book. We are moving through it quickly in class, but I have already flagged some sections that I know I want to go back and read again.

The book arrived quickly and is filled with great information on the benefits of coconut oil. I've been using coconut oil since the book arrived. Can't say it's noticeably affected how I feel, but after the next time I visit the doctor I'm hoping my cholesterol has gone down.

Yes, there are those out there trying to get their piece of the nutrition pie and sell you some useless subpar products, but this book is not about that. It is informative on the benefits of coconut oil. By using this information, I have had good results with my "imagined ailments" (which have been caused by my lack of understanding of nutrition in the past). People have been so miss guided by western societies way of thinking. Look at our health crisis!!!! There are countless over weight and unhealthy people out there, who are eating what the FDA has approved to be good. On the other end of it, its creating a major demand for health care and guess who is striking it rich? Yep... the big pharmaceutical companies and the makers of these unhealthy foods, oh yeah and not to mention the FDA is getting a kick back too. So the point is, get informed!
Very good book

I really enjoyed this book. It was a fascinating account of the wonderful properties of [virgin, unrefined] coconut oil. The information is very helpful and my husband and I try to get coconut oil in some form, regularly. While we haven't yet gotten some in every day, we have, however, tossed our canola oil, and the book has largely increased my awareness and caution over processed oils. It has stimulated my jump into rethinking how we eat and making serious efforts to eat a less Western diet.
I thought his explanation of medium-chain fatty acids and how they differ from long-chain fatty acids was very helpful and readable for a non-science person. It's quite a simple fact that plant fats are entirely different from processed fats (and even animal fats) and are thus used by our bodies very differently. However, looking at what we largely hear in the media and the medical field today, you would think ANY fat should be avoided and at best, reduced or skimmed down. I firmly believe, however, that there are fats that don't need to be reduced by any means. One important aspect of a truly healthy diet is to have a large variety of foods that are whole or close to whole and minimally processed. Having coconut (oil, milk, meat) is one of many good factors of healthy eating (and as a result, healthy living).
The only drawback is I felt the author seemed to elevate coconut as the sole reason islanders are healthy. However, as I consider all the reading I have done on natural foods and natural health lately, the adoption of a Western diet is responsible for much of our poor health, not JUST the omission of coconut oil. I agree that islanders' health degenerates as they eat Western foods, but it is for more reasons than not having coconut oil that this is the case.
There are pages and pages where I underlined sections and read them aloud to my husband. I was very intrigued in his discussion of the real causes of heart disease, and it didn't take much convincing to see right through the popular caveats about saturated fat and cholesterol. I've read from more than one source about the benefits of natural fats. I strongly believe that coconut oil does not increase the risk of heart disease.
It leaves me concerned for those who, as a result of having heart disease, severely cut all fats. While there is huge benefit in cutting processed oils and unnatural fats, I believe there is benefit lost in not consuming plant fats in the form of coconut, avocados, nuts, etc. I believe their bodies and heart can be greatly helped by the medicinal properties of plant fats.
To make the review more helpful, I wish I had tried more of the recipes. I cook a lot though so I already had a lot of ways I could implement the oil or milk without needing his recipes. We did try one of the smoothies and liked it.
When we eventually have kids, I will be very intentional to have coconut as a part of my regular eating for the benefit of my nursing babies.
I've been using coconut oil on my face as an evening moisturizer before going to bed for several weeks now, and I believe it has increased the health of my skin. A close friend used it on hemorrhoids and found more relief than he had in previous years with other ointments. I also rub it on my legs after shaving. A little bit goes a long way. Just today I've rubbed it onto my ring finger several times where I have had an ongoing irritation from my wedding rings. I have had a noticeable improvement after unsuccessful use of cortizone-10.
As for brands, I purchased Nutiva. I would also buy from Wilderness Family Naturals. They have a great website that is informative as well. I haven't really looked into other brands. Check out your local Co-op and I'm sure you could find it there without having to order online.

This is surely the ultimate health and nutritional program as well as a real life changer as some reviewers have stressed out. By simply eating nothing but fresh fruits and juices until noon has totally changed my life around for the better.
I used to have a reasonably good well-balanced diet, but in the morning I would stick to what the Diamonds call a hearty breakfast, including carbohydrates and two cups of coffee. As a result, most of my energy would decrease in the afternoon.
I confess it was hard for me to get rid of the morning coffee. I still feel a little drowsy in the morning because of the coffee absence.
From noon on, however, after taking a twenty-minute-siesta, my energy level mostly sores throughout the entire afternoon and evening.
I still have a bit of everything with moderation, including coffee. I just try to avoid mixing flesh with carbohydrates.
Apart from this, I would agree with some reviewers that this diet may not be adequate for everyone. Thus, if you are a diabetic or prone to it consult a physician before starting this program. The Diamonds themselves caution people to drink their morning juices very slowly to avoid a rapid increase in their sugar levels.

This book is a breath of fresh air in a stale subject area. We all know that we need to eat well and exercise to be healthy. However most books still recommend a one-size-fits-all approach. This book is different.
We as human beings are all biochemically unique. We are as different on the outside as we are on the inside. Our nutrition plans, exercise programs, stress management and lifestyle all have to be different so we can achieve optimal health. On the same page though, we all have commonalities. We all need water, air, food and shelter to survive. This book informs us on the how and the why to do it.
The book covers a vast amount of information without too much technical information. There are also mind maps which cater for the more visual learner. It covers:
1. Food quality
2. Exercise - including flexibility, core function, performance training and energetic exercise
3. Digestion
4. Sleep
5. Customized individual nutrition plans
6. Stress and its affect on the body
Paul has done a brilliant job in teaching us the fundamentals of how to get healthy, not just how to avoid disease. True health is not a magic pill, potion or supplement; it can only be achieved by sticking to fundamental principles and listening to the person who knows your body best - you!

Overall this book is very interesting and educational. It is very detailed and explains how to achieve great overall health such as eating the right foods, exercise, lower your stress, etc.
However, it is overwhelming to me as there are many exercises for different purposes. I have to concentrate to sort out which ones to perform to individualize it. I am more of a class or DVD type of exerciser so that may explain why I feel overwhelmed by it. His DVD "Better Abs, Buns, and Back" is very good and uses a Swiss Ball. You can find it on the CHEK Institute website.
This book, as well as many others I have read, lack in practical recipes for busy families. I wish there would have been some easy, healthy recipes, or at least some resources referenced as far are websites or cookbooks. ( I find the healthy foods as necessary but eating boiled chicken breasts and salads get old fast. Also where we live we do not have access to all the items listed especially fresh organic produce.)
I believe the book kind of leaves you hanging as far as how to take the recommended foods for your metabolic type and turn them into meals for the family.
I don't typically purchase many books but this one is worth buying if you can't find it at your local library. It may just take a little time to sort out what fits for you and what your goals are. You can even take it a step further and see a CHEK practitioner in your area to help meet your health and fitness goals.
I also recommend books by Dr. Joseph Mercola, but check out your local library first.

If you buy only one of the Abs Diet books, this isn't a bad one. It does goes into the diet for about a third of the book, so you don't really need the other books as far as that goes. It also has some ideas for menus as well as some exercises you can do at home. I do like the conversion chart he has in the back of the book for overseas readers, as it has not only oven temps and weight conversions, but also pan size conversions. Very useful if you like to collect recipes from other countries.
Most of the recipes are easy to prepare, but a good number of them really should have been written in "basic recipe with variations" format because that's what they are (the smoothies being but one example). Would have made for a much smaller book though, and this is only 6.5 by 6.5" with a lot of margin space to start with.
His overall writing style is somewhat annoying, especially the recipe titles, since often they give the reader no clue as to the ingredients required. Also, why he prefers instant oatmeal to say, rolled oats, is baffling (my guess is that "instant" fit in with his Abs Diet acronym). You can pulverize rolled oats in a blender or spice grinder just as easily.
If you already have any of the other Abs Diet books, check this out of the library first to see if there's enough new info before you buy it.
3.5 stars

This books simply seems like another way to make money using the Abs Diet label. The original book was great and even the follow-up but this adds very little -- maybe a couple of new recipes here and there. I did not need all the information about the Abs Diet all over again -- I just needed recipes -- very disappointing. Next time, I'll check something out at the library first because I never would have purchased this book if I had seen it first.

If you want this book... do yourself a favor and consider buying the actual book instead of the Kindle edition!

I was spending loads on nutrisystem which it's big claim it that it's low glycemic, so you don't get hungry and have energy. I like the concept, but was tired of pre-packaged foods, so I bought this. I definitely learned stuff I didn't know, such as acidic foods slowing down digestion, whether pasta is bad or not, which breads to eat and the dish on sweetners (I use Stevia now, never heard of it before). I try to follow low-glycemic concepts along w/ a reduced calorie diet for weight loss. It gets four stars b/c there was a lot to the book that wasn't helpful, but the good stuff makes it worth it!

I also bought a copy for my mother, who has Type II Diabetes, and she said it explained more to her than her doctor ever did. Best of all it is easy to undertand and to apply to your life and food choices. She is now on a better path forward for managing her Diabetes.

This book, while it gave some advice that was useful (news about acid foods and cinnamon), overall it was quite complicated - and actually took me off the track I had been on through another, easier to follow method of being on a low glycemic diet. Some advice to reduce stress by moving into more urban areas to avoid traffic confrontations were a bit extreme. It makes better sense that living in a less stressful home life to be a better benefit in managing our stress than just the travel time it takes to get back and forth to work. Found much information of little use - and found other books to be much more helpful with an easier path to follow.Living the G.I. (Glycemic Index) Diet

Was diagnosed with Type II last December and after the anger and denial phase, I finally got busy and read everything I could find on diabetes. This book - hands down - was the easiest to understand and completely turned my negative attitude into a 'can do' approach to adapting the principals of GI living. With a sensible progression of information, it gives you the tools and motivates you to take responsibility for your health. My sugars are now within normal range and I've lost over 20 pounds in the last 6 weeks since reading this book. So you could say, this book changed my life!
