This book is extremely comprehensive. It is the first book about becoming vegetarian that I have read but I am completely satisfied that it covers all the requirements of a vegetarian diet. I would also recommend this book to non-vegetarians, particularly those seeking to reduce meat intake and increase nutrition from plant foods.

This is a good book with a lot of good information. The problem with the book is that it has an agenda. If I didn't know any better I would have to think that the author was a member of PETA. Keep the politics out of the book!

I have purchased all of Dr. Schwarbein's books related to her Schwarzbein Principle Program (SPP), each one of them giving me knowledge and encouragement that I can achieve good health of body, mind and spirit by following the simple, common-sense approach to nutrition and stress management. It is the only book of this kind that I feel makes such PERFECT SENSE. This book is not only for weight-loss, it is for every living human being who wants to be healthy. It is for you and every family member, friend and acquaintance you can recommend it to. I can't stop talking about it and I gave several books as Christmas presents this year!!

This book has a very straightforward message. The message essentially is that too much carbohydrates, refined sugar, gluten and alcohol is the real culprits in terms of poor health/disease and weight gain and not so much meat and fat. The second message is that you need oils and that meat and fat are good sources of oil. Main idea is that man-made carbohydrates like artifical sweetners, wheat and gluten cause elevated insulin reactions and low glucagon levels which lead to storage of fat and will over time will result in insulin resistance, inflammatory reactions and autoimune disease. The book basically recommends that you eliminate refined sugar and man-made sweetners and carbohydrates and that you should increase your intake of essential oils. I am a vegetarian and lost 18 kg in 4 months essentaily following the advice in this book namely eliminating all bread, strarch, gluten, alcohol and refined sugar in my diet. I eat meat once a week but do eat lots of seeds, flaxeed oil and, tofu. The book in my opinion overemphasize the idea that you should eat animal fat and meat but do state that meat eating is not the only way to ensure adequate intake of fats, protein and oils.
The book to start with; Easy to follow!

This is an excellent program and has helped me to feel better and lose weight on a diet I can maintain. It combines the best of low carb diets with lots of vegetables and some healthy carbs like fruits and grains. This book explains her program in a clear and concise way unlike its successors. I highly recommend The Schwarzbein Principle Cookbook as well.

I actually got this for a friend - I wouldn't part with mine. What I like about this is that there's no counting. You look at your plate and understand what your body will do when you eat it. While I don't agree with everything (good luck taking away my coffee and beer), the principle is sound. Like all diet plans, take what works for you and merge it with the rest of your knowledge to create a balanced diet that works for you.
I did get a few of the later books, and got the feeling that the publisher found out there was money to be made. Not much new in the cookbooks.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and other metabolic problems years ago and have read a lot of books on the subject. This was the first one to really explain the relationships between the hormones in a way I could understand. So many people don't realize if you have one hormonal problem, there are probably others that may not be showing obvious symptoms. This book helps the average person make the connections.
Before, the doctors were treating the different problems separately. This book put me on the right track. It enabled me to ask better questions and to be a more informed patient. At my last appointment, my doctor told me I had really done my homework and that would make working together easier. The credit goes to this book more than any other.
It's not perfect, and there are a few over generalizations, but those small annoyances are worth it for the wealth of information in this book.
It has a permanent place on my keeper shelf

This book is a joke, it simplifies the complexities of endocrine problems. You're better off going to a "real doctor" than waste your time and money reading this book! Its recommendations are dangerous, encouraging self medication with alternative supplements; and silly, "Don't watch stressful movies if you have adrenal problems". Do yourself a favor and pass on this book.

I've known that "something wasn't right" about me for many years, but could never get an accurate diagnosis. I've been to my primary care physician, gastroenterologist and hematologist and never gotten a diagnosis as to what was wrong. My PCP prescribed anti-anxiety medication and suggested counseling which was made matters worse more than better. The gastroenterologist had me do an upper GI which ruled out intestinal disease, but didn't alleviate my symptoms. The hematologist just checked my blood count every 6 months and said I had "hemolytic anemia". I had extremely low energy and difficulty functioning. Finally I came across this book, took the self questionaire where I scored 33 out of 42 in low adrenal. I joined the canary club and did the saliva test through Diagnos-techs and BINGO, the test confirmed my self questionaire results. My cortisol levels and DHEA were all very low (thyroid panel and sex gland panels were in proper ranges). I started implementing the suggestions in this book along with those in Dr. James Wilson's book, "Adrenal Fatigue" and am starting to feel healthy again. I recently re-did the saliva test after 6 months of the original test and the results are promising. Instead of all of my cortisol levels being severely depressed, two were now in the "normal" range and the other two were very close to the normal range. I went from having no tolerance to even small amounts of stress to being able to cope better. I hope that Primary Care Physicians will learn to test the adrenals when patients come in complaining of low energy, anxiety, insomnia, etc. It could have saved me years of poor health and mental anguish.

I was happy with this book up till about page 60 or so until I got to the point of the "at home tests". Here I was thinking that there was some way to easily test yourself, but when I finally went to the websites to take a look at the tests I found out they range from $200 to over $400!! And then to find out that there are a gazillion different vitamins/supplements to take!! Well, I guess I can give it 5 stars for helping me realize that I sure do have a thyroid problem and can talk to my doctor about it in more detail rather than him just saying "your test came back normal". I suggest getting it from your local library first and then buying it if you feel as though the info would eventually be helpful to you.

`The Jungle Effect` is what Dr. Miller noticed when her San Francisco practice patients went on a "native diet". Unlike typical Western diets, which caused her patients health problems, when they switched to native diets - traditional foods from native cultures - their health improved, often dramatically. To learn more about native diets, Dr. Miller visited places such as Iceland, Nigeria, Crete, the Amazon, Okinawa to discover what they are doing right. Thousands of years of human trial and error, according to Dr. Miller, have selected for the best diets for human health and longevity.
Dr. Miller is not new in this approach. Dr. Weston A. Price in the 1930s observed the same heath giving benefits of traditional foods and today there is a large and active community of native nutritionists surrounding Price and his legacy (see Sally Fallon's classic Nourishing Traditions). However Miller's book does offer some new and interesting perspectives. She actually traveled to native regions and sampled the foods and diets, and this makes for fascinating reading in an up to date journalistic human-interest story style. She dispels the notion that genetics plays a significant role, suggesting that anyone of an ethnic background can adopt any native diet (eg. a European can benefit from an Okinawa diet). Finally, she suggests food is more than its parts, each dish is symbiotic, so it is important to eat the entire food way, not just its elements. For example olive oil is good, but best in combination with the entire Mediterranean diet. Oddly enough, she also recommends mixing and matching various native diets (she personally cooks from different regions each night).
Dr. Miller's book is an excellent primer for anyone not already familiar with native nutrition. Her research supports and adds to the work done by the Weston A. Price Foundation, with a slightly different approach. Her field-trips make for excellent reading and reveal specific regional food-ways. `The Jungle Effect` is a valuable contribution to the growing literature, and an easy and fun to read introduction to native nutrition.

I just loved this book, too, and probably will never read another diet book again. "The Jungle Effect" is really not a diet book - it's the Occam's razor of human dietary habits, the way our ancestors have always eaten for survival. Working only a block away from Dr. Miller's office, I've been tempted to walk down there to get the book autographed and buy ten more for my family and friends. I probably won't do that, but I definitely will do my best to promote it to people I know. I've already started making changes in my husband's and my diet and it's been a joyous, life-enhancing and elegant experience.
By comparing the sort of meals that Americans are used to eating to, say, an African meal, Dr. Miller conveys an eye-opening epiphany. It should come as no surprise that the fiber content in African meals actually prevents the development of colon cancer. It's not a big mystery, but we're always looking for complicated schemes and sophisticated medical breakthroughs for answers, when the solution is pretty darn obvious and really pretty simple.
I think that readers will also enjoy the travel diary experience as Dr. Miller wends her way not only through remote highlands in Mexico, but the wilds of Walmart in the Central Valley. She really wants to help everyone find a solution, regardless of their status or income and to be able to do it with any and all available resources. What a wonderful book. What great medicine.

The old cliche is true - Dr. Miller has been my personal doctor for years and proved it to me. Her approach helped my health and well-being tremendously and is so logical and common sense - it's a shame that more doctors don't use nutrition as the first line of defense and offense for good health.
I expected it to be an interesting resource with some good recipes - but it is a highly readable and inspiring book. Worth owning and living by!!

I really enjoyed this book and I am grateful that this book is available at all, when you are faced with an incurable disease the most important thing is finding some hope and gaining some control back over your life.
This book is great for that.
I was really hoping for more specific guidelines though, for example.
How to prepare for an ELISA test (if this is possible)
Where to get an ELISA test done.
Start off with X,Y,Z suppliments.
Eliminate one food group at a time.
Common alternatives to common (problem) foods are ...
Staying strong and avoiding temptations (there are a few excellent ideas on this in the book but I felt that they could have been restated towards the end of the book)
I understand that this information IS in the book but I just felt that after reading it I needed more guidance.
Changing your diet is hard enough - when you have such a deeply compelling reason for changing it I feel that one cannot have too much guidance in acheiving it.

I would recommend this book to anyone with MS. I was diagnosed 18th months ago with MS and have been taking medication prescribed by my neurologist. The medicine definitely helps, but this book has given me renewed hope. In addition to the information and stories provided, this diet is amazing. After one week on this diet I noticed a marked change in my ability to walk and my stamina.

I feel extremely lucky to have found this book. When I was diagnosed with MS in October 2007, I instinctively became very careful with my diet because of past health problems due to food (Celiac's,food allergies & sensitivies).
But there were things I didn't know in regards to food & MS. This book explains why diet is important & how different foods effect MS. I also enjoyed reading all the personal case histories of real MS patients who have tried this diet.
I plan on staying on this diet the rest of my life. (I want to do everything possible for me to achieve the best possible outcome, so I also take one of the MS drugs (Avonex) in addition to this diet.)
Also, this book explained more to me about the disease of MS than all the neurologist's I have seen put together. I am deeply grateful to Ann Sawyer & Judith Bachrach for writing this book...Thank You!

Also, this book explained more to me about the disease of MS than all the neurologist's I have seen put together. I am deeply grateful to Ann Sawyer & Judith Bachrach for writing this book...Thank You!

The Power Protein Plan is an excellent program. The book details every aspect, including cholesterol, triglycerides, heart disease, diabetes...and explains how this protein plan can actually positively affect each.
My husband is diabetic and is on insulin and oral drugs to maintain his out of control blood sugar. I put him on the protein power plan and his blood sugar dropped enough that he could do away with 3 shots and the oral drug. He never felt better, but his self-destructive nature has caused him to forego sticking to the plan entirely-which is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5: If you cheat on this plan, you will gain weight and probably cause your blood levels to rise.
All in all, a healthy, easy plan--the included recipes are really quite good-though time-consuming.

This book really sells itself short by marketing as a "weight loss" book. It is a fantastic reference for people who don't understand insulin resistance and the medical background to why carb overloaded diets are so unhealthy. It has changed the way I eat and think about everyday food. As an added bonus, my post pregnancy weight is just falling off. I would HIGHLY recommend this book.

I am the author of a new book entitled GENOCIDE;HOW YOUR DOCTOR'S DIETARY IGNORANCE WILL KILL YOU. I am a family physician with over ten years experience introducing a low carbohydrate, more fat, more cholesterol, more protein diet into my patient's lives. Through this dietary approach I have cured type 2 diabetics, treated people with high blood pressure with little or no need for meds, seen tons of weight lost and the list goes on and on. Protein Power was the first book I read espousing the virtues of low carb diets.
Unfortunately most physicians will never read this book and if they do they will dismiss it as an opinion, not based in fact. For some reason, the scientific method is not followed in dietary clinical trials. The scientific method should be: I have an idea (theory, supposition, opinion, hypothesis whatever you want to call it), I perform an experiment to either prove or disprove my idea; if I prove my theory-great-look how smart I am. But if the results do not prove my idea, I am supposed to re-evaluate my initial idea, not call the experiment flawed or the results inconclusive.
The reason the dietary clinical trials appear contradictory is because the researchers in these trials start off with a conclusion--not an idea-- perform an experiment, and when the results of the experiment do not support what the researchers already 'think' they know; they now call the experimental design flawed or the results inconclusive, which is generally not the case.
I have literally treated thousands upon thousands of my patients with low carb diets over the last decade. I love when the labs come back with higher HDLs, lower triglycerides and normal blood sugars. I love teasing my patients and ask if they are eating more fat and cholesterol. When they say yes, I ask them "Well, if you are eating more fat and cholesterol, then why did your fat level drop and why did your HDL rise, and why did you lose weight?" I always get a smile back, because my patients know what I am getting at. And what I'm getting at is the fact--and I mean FACT, that low cholesterol, low fat diets DO NOT WORK to any degree to help people stay off or reduce their medications.
This book should be required reading in all medical and undergraduate colleges. If physicians actually understood the correct way to tell their patients to eat--many disease processes would become extinct--instead of the human race. I recommend my patients to purchase this book (along with mine of course :-), to help them understand why they must start low carb diets----NOW. By the way, my apologies to Dr. Michael Eades, I mistakenly called you Dan in my book, even though I must have said your name thousands of times to my patients--but I have recommended your book thousands and thousands of times, so I hope you forgive me for that.
Allow me to end my post with the three biggest dietary myths in America;
MYTH # 1
Eating fat makes us fat. FALSE. The truth is that eating fat does not make us fat, unless we're eating too many carbohydrates along with that fat.
MYTH #2
Eating cholesterol containing foods causes heart disease. FALSE. There has never been any study which has shown, convincingly, that eating cholesterol containing foods causes heart disease.
MYTH #3
Probably the biggest dietary myth out there is that the calorie actually means something in human nutrition. FALSE. The calorie means nothing in human nutrition.
Thank you Dr's Eades, for helping save my life and the lives of my patients. It inspired me to write my own account of what I've seen work in my practice over the last decade.Genocide: How Your Doctor's Dietary Ignorance Will Kill You!!!!

2000 years ago man thought Earth was the center of the universe. 400 years ago the world was flat; some people who questioned this wisdom were even burned at the stake for heresy. Before the beginning of 19th century engineers thought man would "disintegrate" if he exceeded 100 mph, hence train speed was limited on purpose. Just 20 years ago "high-carb" diets were supposed to help people improve their well-being. Well, we know the disastrous epidemic the high-carb diet did to our Nation - 60% overweight! We Americans are so fat that the western hemisphere created a planetary imbalance, skewing the earth's rotation about its axis. So there, forget global warming. The world's climate has drastically changed because we are literally heavy on this side of the globe. How's that for a theory, Al Gore?? All kidding aside, what I'm getting at is that you should approach this book (as well as life in general) with an open mind.
I am a hardcore bodybuilder, and yes, I have been on the high-fat, high protein, low carb diet for a while now. If there is anything that the sedentary general population can learn from us bodybuilders, it is that we are vain, and we love to look at ourselves in the mirror. But more significantly, we are experts at building muscle and losing fat. Many bodybuilders may not have the credentials on paper with those fancy letters, such as a BS, an ABC, an MD or a PhD. But trust me, we know fat loss. And I am here to tell you that "Protein Power" works.
The reason I bought this book is that I wanted to understand the "why's." I already know "low-carb" works; I just wanted to know for myself the scientific reasons behind it. The doctors go in great detail explaining why and how. The science behind the "low-carb" concept is explained in a level that 8th graders can understand. The doctors did an excellent job. In addition to the easy-to-understand format, but well-researched and scientific findings the book outlines, I love the fact that the doctors were kind enough to include a recipe section. Yummy!!
Chances are if you are reading this section in Amazon, it is because you wish to lose weight. In closing, I'd like to offer the following:
There are four pillars to losing weight. They are: a) your mind; b) weight training; c) cardio exercise; and, d) nutrition.
a) Your mind. You have to believe that you can do it. Whether you think you can or you can't, you're right. There are no magic pills that you can take and melt the fat off when you wake up the next day. YOU HAVE TO WORK HARD!! And don't blame genetics. Take accountability for your own lifestyle. Once you understand and accept this, you are on your way to losing fat.
b) Weight training. You should consider adding weight training to your regimen. You want to keep and / or add muscles. Muscles burn fat due to increased metabolic rate. You don't want to "lose weight" by losing both fat and muscle. That's another thing. You should focus on "fat loss" and not "weight loss." I'm not saying you should be a bodybuilder, all I am saying is that weight training is an effective fat burner. Get yourself an Accu-Measure caliper (also sold at Amazon for $20) so you can measure fat loss on a weekly basis.
c) Cardio. You will lose fat if you create a calorie deficit. You can do this in two ways. You can either burn the calories by doing cardio, OR you can consume less calories by eating less food. BUT, and here is a big BUTT (pun intended), the best way to burn fat is eat a little less AND exercise more.
You can certainly lose weight just by consuming less calories without exercising, but you will be a "skinny fat person." You know, those dudes with a low body weight, but little if any muscle, and the last 15 pounds of stubborn fat is left defiantly clinging to their hips and butt.
d) Nutrition. Read "Protein Power." This is perhaps the only fat loss book you will ever need.
I wish you the best of luck in your quest to have a leaner, meaner physique. HOOAH! (It's an Army thing.)

I started with ER4YT. I (O) and hubby (B) have been on the diet for the last three weeks.
What I noticed: I easily lost weight and my mood improved. I happened to be a breast cancer survivor and hubby, a colon cancer survivor. We tried eating the usual recommended diet for beating cancer, including the whole grains and choosing chicken over red meet. Me, gained weight and flabbiness with worsening asthma, and hubby sneezing and snoring like a broken siren at night.
Three weeks into the diet, I lost 3 kg and my asthma resolved. My hubby snores silently at night. His sneezing disappeared down.
I saw my colleague reading ER4YT three years ago, but dismissed the diet because she still is obese. The critics on the diet also delayed my insight.
When, my asthma persisted, I said, "No harm in trying. There is no danger or harm in omitting wheat and corn.
The critics were probably jealously driven. When too many people are experiencing the benefits, lets not gets into evidence base and scientific correctness. There is no harm in the diet if we eat on what is beneficial and limiting to the appropriate calories. There is in fact a lot to be gained. I am grateful to Dr. Peter D'Adamo. So is my hubby.

This book is a bit esoteric for a layman, though I muddled through it and learned an amazing amount of things I had no clue about. I will now move on to the "eat right 4 your type book". The Live Right book hit home repeatedly and explained things I would have liked to have known 60 years ago.
I trust that when I get the Eat Right 4 Your Type book it will be more precise as to exactly what to eat and not eat. I just wish that someday some Doctor would right a book that says we just need to change our diet and never have to exercise!" Not holding my breath on that one.
I recommend this book to those who are looking for that ever elusive answer as to what to do for health. Now I will give the plan a try.

I have purchased two other books in the series. I found little to be different in this book from the other two. The books tend to repeat themselves a lot. I purchased this book with all good intentions of learning the lifestyle changes and exercise programs that are recommended for my blood-type. I was a little disappointed to find that there was very little additional information provided in this book from the Eat Right For Your Blood Type book. Based on this, I am not going to be purchasing any other books in the series.

I have read many books on various illnesses and their causes, but this one beats them all by far. You will find the reasons behind the scenes that make it almost impossible to win the cancer battle. You will learn why the "Big 3" don't work. Most of all though, you will learn what you need to do to regain your health. This book is jam packed full of information that you can use. If you are facing any kind of health crisis this will be the most important book in your library.

This books was first published in 1981 and again in 1991 and 1999. When my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 1995, I became aware of this book and purchased copies for my four siblings and my father. It was a God-send to us; as we learned quite a lot about the desease and the day to day caring for her. One thing I learned was no matter how many times she would repeat and repeat and repeat the same story, I would just say "oh, really" and just let her go on and on. Previously, I would say things like "mom, you already TOLD me this a million times." This would upset her and cause her much agitation. Mom has passed on (12/24/2000), but I like to think we helped her go without a lot of angst and agitation. Please read the book. It has many, many fine points. Thank you. m

If you have a family member with Alzheimers you must read this. It explains what and sometimes why Alzheimers patients act like they do, and how difficult it can be to care for them. Even if you are not a caregiver this will help understand the stresses caused by having a family member with Alzheimers. Also gives good advice on how to deal with difficult circumstances that will arise.

And that some of the things happening are a completely natural part of the aging process.
