This book makes a lot of sense. You just have to get started and do it! I feel like the exercise portion is realistic, just start walking 30 minutes a day. The nutrition part seems a bit more complicated, but think that once you get into the habit, it won't be hard

I am 45 years old. I was diagnosed with osteopenia three years ago. I was scared. I followed my doctor's advice by adding more calcium in my diet including supplements and doing more exercises. I was so motivated I stuck with the diet and exercise regiment all the way through. Just this May, I missed my period and I have alway been regular (28-30 days). My first thought was, could this be the onset of menopause which could mean more bone loss for me. I had not had another bone scan since the first one I had three years ago. I did not want to know. I figured as long as I was doing my best to stay healthy and live longer, that was my measure for success. I was four days past my period due date. I was told to rule out pregnancy before anything else. I bought a home test kit and was shocked to see a positive line. I did another test thinking it was a mistake, but it showed the same line again. I am going on my fifth month of pregnancy. My genetic testing for the first trimester came out negative for Down Syn, Tri 13 & 18. Blood test and fetus measurements passed and my age equivalent is that of a 34 year old. We are very happy although we didn't plan it. We have one biological son who is 11 years old. Always wanted another one, tried adoption but decided not to go thru it. I am an older mother but this just proves that thru simple changes in our lifestyle, we can make leaps and bounds in our lives like we never imagined. This book has helped me significantly. Through my religious faith and following the guidelines of the YOU books, I know I can have a happier, longer life along side my family.

I'm used to cooking rich, fattening foods that make you gain weight by just looking at it. My husband is a testimate to that. I had a coming to Jesus talk with God because I feared he was going to die on me and he is only 43. He had gained 40 lbs.
Anyway, I have always thought light cooking is tasteless cooking. I couldn't be more wrong. My husband has lost 12 lbs in 3 weeks. He loves everything I cook from this cookbook.
I haven't tried too many other books. Being new to healthy cooking I figured I'd start here. I'm buying one for my sister and my mother because these recipes are easy and tasty.

I was not sure what I was expecting out of this book so I had no preconceived notions when I bagan. I really enjoyed reading this. I am a girl so naturally I love fashion. I found this book to be for me. I cant afford half of her recomendations, but its a fun book. One can apply many of her suggestions into our world of reality paychecks. I have always thought she has such a great style. I only bought this because I am a huge fan, but that doesnt mean one would neccessarily have to be a fan of VB to get something out of the book. Plus she's much funnier than I would have thought.

This is a fun and light book to read. For anyone who's a little behind in the fashion know how to..., this book will help you. It's funny and witty and what you take away from it is that fashion is for everyone not matter what age, size or bank account you have.

Great tips, great photos, and Victoria relates to people who can't and don't always buy designer stuff. I love that she lists the best stores for products, which is always helpful - and they vary in price range, for affordability at every level. I'll use it as a reference guide for jeans and black tie affairs!

I was under the impression that this book was going to be a guide to dressing yourself to look your best. I was dead wrong. It started out by saying that you don't have to have a lot of money to be classy and I agree whole-heartedly. But then she completely contradicts herself the rest of the book. She name-drops pretty much every high-end designer you could think of. It's a blatant advertisement for her denim line. It is also the most repetitive piece of "literature" I have ever read. Every subject she talks about she uses the same exact wording. She always tells you that you "this type of clothing (e.g. t-shirt) you have to spend money on if you want to look good." I could understand if she said this about one article of clothing, but she said it about ALL articles of clothing. She pretty much scrapped her statement at the beginning and the book turned out to be a way for her to show off how much money she has and how wonderful her husband is. Long story short: I read this on an airplane and I had a choice between this book and a skymall catalog. I chose the skymall catalog.

Most of it is common sense information. Was good information regarding how to do cardio to get the most efficient calorie burning. Thought the diet was ridiculous. Don't know what half the foods are and not being a fish lover that seems to be all they offer for every dinner. Need a clearer guide to substitutes if you do not like certain foods. You can't eat celery for every meal. The exercises weren't new. I have been going to a gym for 20 years and the information about less weight more reps have been out there for years.

I have been following Robert's food and exercise program for a little over a month and have lost 15 pounds and 8.5 inches in one month. The food program is easy to follow and I do not get hungry. I have lost cravings for sweets completely. I had been dieting and exercising for 18 months before and was at a 6 or 7 month plateau and then I found Robert's program and I am so impressed. It totally kicked started my weight loss and the whole time I was dieting before I have never lost 15 pounds in one month. I highly recommend it!!!

I'm nearly 60 years old, and I've tried nearly everything to lose weight. It seems to be much harder the older I get. When I stopped smoking 3 years ago, I gained 50 pounds! It's been an uphill battle trying to lose it! I decided to try one more thing, so I bought this book. I have to tell you that if you follow the book, you should definitely lose weight! I have, much to my surprise. I am still very much in the process of losing, but I want you to know that it's working! I have 40 more to lose, but I just started with the book 11 days ago. It's given me hope, and more determination to carry through. Give it a try! What do you have to lose, but weight?!

Mother of Son just diagnosed as ASD

As a mother of a little boy who was just diagnosed, I thought Jenny is right on with everything she says that she did to help her little boy in this book! I don't know why the first reviewer found this book so offensive because I found it be the very opposite of that. I found this book as a source of inspiration and hope-especially with a diagnosis that can leave you feeling helpless and alone. There is help and out there and you can get that help to help your son/daughter. I really loved Jenny's passion when talking about her son, and I could totally relate to alot of the things that she went through while searching through the medical community to find out what exactly was wrong with her son. I also loved the "What to Do Pamplet" at the back of the book so that she can try and help some of us who have just received our diagnosis and need to know where to go. All in all, this book was helpful and inspiring that I too can pull up my sleeves and help my child with as much vigor and passion as Jenny has with her son!! I give this book two HUGE thumbs up!!!!

I finished reading Jenny McCarthy's book "Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism" and I have to say it was one of the best books I have ever read and I am so glad I read it. I read it in a day because I could not stop. It was so good, sad, educational, and some parts were even a little funny because of course Jenny McCarthy can find a way to make you laugh even when talking about something as serious as her child having autism. Her humor is truly a gift. It helps lighten the mood when reading so it is not the most depressing thing you have ever read and you can get through it because the whole situation is heartbreaking but she is so positive and has such a wonderful attitude which is what helps so much in healing her son.
I had a couple reasons for wanting to read this book, one being I had read her other books: Belly Laughs, Baby Laughs, and Life Laughs and of course gained an interest in what was going on with her and her baby but also because with Autism now effecting 1 in 150 children I figured I should learn more about it because it might someday effect one of my children (I currently have a 3 month old and she is my first child) or if not surely the child of someone I know. I did not even know anyone with Autism, I only knew people that knew people who had Autism, or so I thought. I recently learned I actually know some people whose children have a form of Autism and I did not know it until now and I told them about the book already. I realized after reading the first two pages that I did not know much at Autism at all. Actually just reading the title made me realize I didn't know much because I did not think it could be healed. I always heard there is no cure, which technically there is not yet, but there are things you can try that work for a lot of children, especially if it is caught and addressed very early, and although they may never be completely healed they end up living almost normal lives. I also wanted to read the book because I was very curious about something that in the 1970's only affected 1 in 10,000 children now effects 1 in 150 and they are still not sure what the cause is. Jenny says in the book that this is something we should be concerned about more than global warming because if it keeps increasing and ends up being almost every child, what are people going to do, stop having kids? At this rate, I think we should be more concerned about this.
Another thing I learned about Autism from this book is there are many forms. Some kids have severe cases and some have mild cases even before treatment (some go from severe to mild with treatment like her child). Also, Jenny believes, and I agree with her, that Autism does not seem to be one disease/disorder. It seems to be several problems children have that have been given one name which is another reason children with Autism are so different. I think it is basically a lot of problems children are having and they don't know what is wrong so if they have certain symptoms they call it Autism. One reason she has so much success in healing him is because she doesn't just do things to cover up the problems with a temporary bandaid, she always ask herself what is causing the problem and tries to eliminate the cause.
She does not think that vaccines cause Autism but does believe there is a link there and so do I. She believes some kids are born with weaker immune systems and can't handle the vaccines. She is still for giving children vaccines of course, but thinks they should do something like maybe a test beforehand to determine the effects it may have on a child and she is also for greening our vaccines, which is not in her book, but I read on the internet that her and Jim Carrey are currently urging congress to makes vaccines safer because they have so many dangerous things in them. After reading several of her books, I personally think it also has something to do with an injury to the head her son received while she was giving birth to him. He had to wear a helmet for a short time as a baby to correct the shape or his head which was misshaped due to the difficulties in labor which resulted in a c-section and she talks about this in her Baby Laughs book not this book but I see a link because in this book the first sign of Autism her son has is seizures and the one thing they would always ask her at the hospital when he had a seizure was did he suffer an injury to the head and she would of course say no and did not understand why they were asking that until she later found out that injuries to a certain part of the brain cause seizures of course. I don't know if she ever even linked the two together but I did after reading both books.
I would highly recommend this book to everyone because I think everyone should be educated on the subject but would especially recommend it to anyone who has a child with Autism because most doctors, including Jenny's just basically send you out the door with the comment "I'm sorry but your child has Autism" like there is nothing you can do and she found out from other parents with Autistic children that there are some things you can do, or at least try. If it were my child, I would try everything just like she did whether it worked or not, at least you are trying and there is some hope instead of just giving up. I think the book she has coming out next month, which I also plan on reading, would be even more help to parents with Autism though because she wrote it due to the response she got from other parents with Autism after reading her first book and things they did to heal their child so in that book she shares their stories since each child with Autism is different and the new book also gives you an update on how her son is doing now.

I do not have a child with autism, nor am I a professional, but I am a psychology student and EXTREMELY fascinated by Autism. This book gave great insight to a personal struggle with a child with autism, and I loved this book!!

My respect for Jenny McCarthy has increased ten fold after hearing about and then reading her story. I first 'met' Jenny McCarthy back when MTV was still in its first stages and never would have guessed! Yes, I admit, I probably would have judged her on first impressions back in those days but she has taught me a valuable lesson. What a wonderful beautiful mom she is! I heard of her story when I caught a few moments of a TV interview when the book first came out. I was instantly touched and rushed out to purchase the book. My heart breaks for the struggles she and her son have faced. Her courage, determination, and love for her son have shown the world one person CAN make a difference and there is always hope.
I hope others will read of their journey together and be inspired as well. Jenny and her son certainly touched my heart and have made me more aware of nightmare families dealing with Autism can face. May those with the ability to limit those nightmares be inspired to do so as well.

Some things which should be noted about this book before going into it.
1. At no point does Ms. McCarthy claim to be a medical expert. Indeed, she goes out of her way to note her lack of medical qualifications and notes that this book is just a journal of her experiences as she grew into being the mother of an autistic child.
2. She does not claim that mercury vaccines are responsible for causing autism. She only mentions mercury once and that is to mention the theory and say that more research needs to be done to confirm it one way or the other.
3. The therapies she uses for her son are expensive and well outside the means of most families. But most therapies are, especially those dubbed experimental by HMOs and the health-care providers that most of us go through. Again, McCarthy notes this.
4. McCarthy does use a lot of salty language. This shouldn't be a surprise for anyone who is familiar with her comedy but it seems to be enough to inspire some parents to ignore the message and give it a 1 star rating besides. If this bothers you, you don't have to read the book. But don't go out of your way to trash it.
All in all, I found this book to be enjoyable for what it is - a first-person account of a young woman growing up and developing into a mother and a better person. And however you feel about Ms. McCarthy's comedy (I personally can't stand it), you have to admire her desire to try and share her story and give the parents of autistic children the respect that they deserve with her charity work.

I bought the first book(French women don't get fat) while living in the US and thought it was great.
After having moved to Paris for almost a year now and also after reading this second book "French women for all seasons," i suddenly realize how naive I was buying in the French fairytale.
I'm an asian women who came to work in the US about 7 years ago. My American experience was very satisfying and rewarding. American people are nice and friendly in general. Very rarely was there someone (friends or total strangers) who was mean to me or gave me bad service. American diet may not be the healthiest in the world and there exists an obesity problem, but I still appreciate people's kindness, whether they're over- or underweight.
My french experience is the totally opposite. They're the most unfriendly people I've ever met, they look down on English speakers, especially americans. By no means do they resemble the elegant, calme, relaxed French image the author tries to sell to the reader. (excellent marketing though cause so many people has bought it).
The author is a very wealthy woman-CEO of a big wine company. Most of the people (French or not) I meet can't afford her lifestyle. There're nice tips we can pick up (like try to eat seasonal fresh rather than packaged food and portion control). That's about all.

I really enjoyed this book - it is a great lifestyle read that doesn't just focus on losing weight. I liked the blend of recipes, childhood memories, clothing advice, flower arranging tips, wine tasting lessons, cheese tasting information - it was an interesting read that was informative and not preachy. Buy it just for the discussion of enjoying food and wine (and how to pair both - she really goes into detail and, of course, knows her stuff).

"The art of living is pacing yourself in the long run." ~ pg. 34
After discovering a delicious recipe for croissants in Mireille Guiliano's first book: "French Women Don't Get Fat," I was eager to read her second book. "French Women For All Seasons" is as much about the pleasures of food as it is about learning to abstain from overindulgence.
As each season passes, Mireille Guiliano blissfully captures moments she loves. Whether she is talking about her idyllic childhood or her travels she seems to be able to weave in subtle comments about weight issues. Diet aside, I think her love of yoga and walking are her real secrets. Her stories of riding her new bike may also inspire you to dust off the bike in the garage.
There are interesting moments like the recipe for a facemask made with strawberries and Vaseline. The cucumber and yogurt mask seemed more acceptable. I'm also not quite sure why she objects to refrigerating fruit. I tend to keep a fruit salad in the refrigerator but I can see her point about eating room temperature fruit in season.
Many of the recipes look delicious and you might want to try to make your own eggplant tapenade, butternut squash soup, pears with ginger and chocolate mousse or grilled peaches with cinnamon and rosemary. There are a few recipes for pasta and lots of ideas for potatoes. Mireille Guiliano's love affair with fresh fruits and vegetables is very evident. While the recipes are interesting it is Mireille's cozy writing style that draws you into the book and keeps you reading right to the last page.
If you love this book you may also want to look for books by Peter Mayle.

I wish I had read this book three years ago when we first realized our mom was suffering with this disease. I have read many articles on the subject and felt I understood what was happening to her. But this book helps you to communicate with the alzheimer's patient. It gives you a better understanding of each stage and how to make the most of each day for both the alzheimer's patient and their family. It has practical information that can be applied immediately.

This book has been a God send. I read it early on into my journey as a caregiver so I better understood what to expect. 5 Years later I am using it as a "how to" manual. The author is direct and realistic with her advise. I appreciate that are not sugar coated. It is reassuring to learn that what I am living is not unusual that eveything is managable with a little creativity.
Thanks for the support and advise.

This book is full of well-researched, very important information about the food we eat, and the effects industrialization has had on our food supply. Yet: it is not a downer, the answers to this problem are fairly easy (like find a producer of grass fed beef), and make sense. It is exciting to read how nutritious our food can be, and how the trend toward buying locally grown food can fit right into your life. This book is definitely worth the money.

There is no other species on this planet that relys on the "breast milk" of another species for it's nutrients, or survival.
Cow's milk is a chemical solution designed to stimulate the immune system and growth of a young cow. Cow's milk is for cows.
Unfortunately, since even raw, grass-fed, "organic", cow's milk is full of environmental contaminates, like dioxin, it's probably best to transition the young cow to grass as soon as possible.
I could go on about saturated fats, heart disease and prostate cancer, but just don't drink the stuff! Or eat what are probably the worst processed foods out there for anyone with severe cardiovascular disease. Cheese and ice-cream.
Putting milk and cheese on the cover, alongside fruits and vegetables, as if they were somehow equal, is just a sad joke.

As an avid foodie, I've read a lot of books on cooking, nutrition and sustainability. This book is well written and reminds us that humans have been eating certain foods for thousands of years. Those foods are probably not to blame for the influx of diet related diseases. However, I would caution people not to go overboard on the fat. I agree 100% that animal fat can be good for us; as can dairy fat. For weight reasons however, most people should probably watch their daily consumption in my opinion. I highly recommend this book; it finally got me to relax about eating things that our culture deems bad

I must admit, I am naturally rather skeptical, especially of books like Nina Planck's, where in the intro she unabashedly admits that she eats bacon, the skin of a roasted chicken, cream and other "unhealthy" foods while remaining rather thin. When she follows this up by emphasizing that she was fat and unhappy as a vegetarian, I only continued reading out of morbid fascination. By the second chapter, I found that Planck had a really good point because the book is more about how chemical-laden foods are bad for you. Her research is well documented and researched, and she makes a number of excellent points that are in keeping with current research on heart disease and the dangers of trans-fats and high fructose corn syrup. I found this book to be extremely helpful in the way I now approach food. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to escape from pre-packaged nonsense at the grocery store and get back to basics with food.

Maximum Strength by Eric Cressey is an excellent book which gives an extremely detailed step by step program to build strength.
As a regular gym goer who has just been turning up and doing my routine without making significant gains for a while, I found this book easy to relate to. The book is geared to those that want to get stronger, not necessarily bigger. It was exactly the book I was looking for.
I was a little sceptical of the book when I first flicked through it at the bookstore because it went against what I've been conditioned to think about working out. However, after seeing so many positive reviews on Amazon and online forums I thought I would buy it and try it out.
It reads easily, the pictures and diagrams are easy to follow and the light hearted humour makes it easier to read.
That said, I haven't gotten a single ounce stronger from reading this book. On Monday 11 August I will start my 16 week program and due to finish on Saturday 29 November so hopefully the results equal the quality of the book.

Besides including a well detailed 4 phase weight training program, Eric also includes many extras such as warm-up routines, mobility exercises, and soft tissue work that will make you feel great as well as increase your strength. Great advice on nutrition and future training as well. Maximum Strength really is a book that anyone in weight training or looking to start, should read.

The exercises are clearly described and the pictures really help illustrate the intent of each exercise. Overall, a very, very good product.

I think I finally found the holy grail! I have been studying nutrition topics for more than 15 years, and this book really breaks down the details of the hormones involved in weight loss/ weight gain. They have done a great job gathering all the research together and deciphering it. I like how they show that simple vitamin and amino acid combos can help reset things. What I do not like is that they push their own products. They will say you need one version of a vitamin that is "more bio-available" and they just happen to be one of a few people that carry that product for a really high price. Amazing that. I am still experimenting with the nutritional supplements to see how well their advice works in the practical world. But for the science part of it I am very pleased.

The authors are only willing to help the chosen ones. Mother didn't nurse you when you were born? Hopeless. Took some amphedimines in college while studying for final exams? Hopeless. You get the idea. So, if you're one of those perfect people who lived a Susie-Creamcheese life, this is the book for you. But, if you're so perfect, why would you need it? Gave them 2 stars for research alone; wouldn't recommend this book to any of my friends.
