for anyone looking to remove refined sugar and carbs from their diet this is a very good book! It breaks down "allowable foods" by red, green, and yellow categories. Very easy to follow.

I actually got this book as a continuation of my effort to learn all I could about G.I. living. It does not have the list of G.I. food counts, but rather gives red, light and green ratings. Green meaning GO.
Still a great book though and a wonderful guide for those not getting as technical as I was trying to be.

A very straight-forward book. Explains the Glycemic Index easily and is a quick read. It could use a few more recipes and suggestions for snacks for people just starting out.
I'm 37, am 5 '4" and 155 lbs. I've been following the GI Diet about 90% for the last three or four weeks, and seem to have lost about three pounds and almost an inch off my waist. I bought this book because my food choices should have been enough to satisfy me throughout the day calorie- and fiber-wise, but left me feeling starving and reaching for something sweet a few hours after lunch or crackers, string cheese and bread while cooking dinner. I don't miss eating as much bread as I thought I would and I'm slowly beginning to realize that vegetables CAN be a satisfying meal without the addition of some starch. I still crave sweets. I've found that I can have an occasional treat or go off the wagon for a day and still stay on track. It's a lifestyle change I can live with.

I bought this book for myself and am having such great success that I bought the book for my mother and sister. To date mom and I combined have lost 50 lbs. We have more energy and feel healthier than we have in years. Mom is 63 years old and keeps up with us if not better she says her energy level is just amazing. I have a total of 56 lbs. to lose. I have lost 22 lbs I know with this plan I will make it. This is a way of eating not just a diet but here's the beauty in it you can easily eat this way for the rest of your life. I would recommend this book to anyone who is ready to lose weight and get healthy.

This book verifies and clarifies the idea of the insulin and glucose "yo-yo" weight gain. 20 years ago I read another book similar to this idea, "Sugar Blues", but it was considered "fanatical". I recommend this book to anyone who can't understand why they just can't lose weight.

I was lead to this cookbook because of my searches related to PCOS. And, though PCOS patients need to monitor their blood glucose levels, this cookbook called for a lot of ingredients that are not recommended for PCOS patients. This is the ONLY reason I was unhappy with the book. I ended up giving it to my father-in-law who has diabetes as many of the recipes did look appetizing, otherwise, I would have sent it back.

Every single recipie that I have tried is easy to make and tastes wonderful!! My husband and I really enjoy the Pork chops with Honey Glazed Apples (pg 135) and the Beef and Noodles with Chile Jam (pg 111). It's hard to find recipies that are Low GI, taste good, don't require odd ingredients and give you lasting energy -- this cook book offers all of that!!

I was actually looking for a book that would be easy for me to pull groceries out of my fridge or off the pantry shelf to make. This was a little too "gourmet" for my liking. But I will make some of the recipes, there is noway that I would be able to these a couple nights a week.

The Low GI Diet Cook book is nicely organized and illustrated. The problem is that there are ingredients in so many of the recipes that my family will not eat and some that I have to pass on. The best way for me to use this cookbook is to modify the recipes as I use them. Then, some of them just can not be changed due to core ingredients.
Perhaps this book is due to the more varied palette. I still think that it does give some good ideas.

I started following the GI Diet (Rick Gallop's book in case there are other versions). I'm not crazy about all of his recipes, so I wanted to get another cookbook that would give me some additional recipes that I could use while on the diet. The cover of "The Low GI Diet Cookbook" even says "The World's Foremost Authorities on the Glycemic Index". Hah! As I flip through the pages, every recipe that calls for a sweetener uses honey, maple syrup, sugar, brown sugar, and even confectioner's sugar! There aren't even any conversion charts on how to substitute with agave nectar, stevia, or xylitol. My biggest gripe is with the sweets, but I'm not thrilled that many other recipes call for non-green-light ingredients.

These girls get mad props for exposing the truth behind the food we eat. Most people don't realize that the dairy & meat industry spend millions and millions on advertising and lobbyists to convince people that unhealthy food is actually healthy. These girls report the truth, backed by peer reviewed published medical studies (the real science & information that doesn't have millions to compete with meat & dairy industries). If you or anyone you know is pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant - this book is essential! If you care about your baby you can't ignore these facts. Bonus is that these authors are damn funny!
WARNING: Horrible, disturbing book-- NOT for pregnant women

This book might be fine if I were looking for a Fast Food Nation-type read, but I agree with the previous reviewer-- this is definitely NOT for pregnant women who are at all sensitive or emotional.
I picked up a review copy at the bookstore where I work, not familiar with the Skinny Bitches and their vegan philosophy. Quite frankly, from the cover art I expected it to be a chick lit-type "sassy" pregnancy guide. I opened to a page at random and read quotes from slaughterhouse employees bragging about the cruelties they had inflicted on farm animals, and describing them in explicit and gloating detail.
This book is much, much more explicit in its descriptions than Fast Food Nation. The cover art and title are completely inappropriate for what this book is, which is a merciless call to veganism (the admittedly brief section I read had nothing at all to do with pregnancy). I really feel that anyone who buys this book due to the cover or the title (and let's face it, a lot of bookstore buys are impulsive in that way) will feel disturbed and duped. Even if I were not 8 months pregnant this book would have made me feel queasy and upset.
I'm not opposed to veganism or exposes of the meatpacking industry (and I keep mentioning Fast Food Nation because it gets the message across without needing to resort to such explicit, almost lascivious gore), but I have to wonder what in the world the publisher was thinking to publish this book the way they did. This is really irresponsible.

Well, unfortunately, I was completely disappointed with this book from start to finish. I thought the authors might have some important things to say about eating healthy and staying away from processed foods, etc...---but just about the entire book was dedicated to the detailed processes of slaughterhouses, animal welfare, and why it's better to be a vegan. I give them credit however for the amount of research they did for this book--it is very informative and well-written, but a very bad read for a pregnant hormonal woman. Who wants to read about the way chickens, pigs, and cows are treated/slaughtered when all I was looking for was alternative ways to eat in order to better my health for me and my baby??? No, I'm NOT going to be a vegan after reading this book...and quite frankly I'm a little pizzed that they try to push it so hard on a pregant woman!!! But, I did pick up a few good pointers here and there. Not a complete waste of money, but buyer beware--this book is a walking PITA billboard!!! And don't read it if you're hormonal and pregnant--you'll just end up in tears.

Most of this book is built on old themes... juicing, avoiding sugar, etc. No news there. Much of the remainder is built on ideas that haven't passed muster with mainstream medicine... blood-type diet, food combining, colonics, alkaline/acid diets, "contracting" vs "expanding" food types, yin/yang chinese medicine ideas. I'm not saying it's all bunk... just that I would prefer more studies cited and footnoted. Like other posters here, I would say the Nourishing Traditions folks are much more solid. Also, I think the "Gut and Psychology" book is very solid. "I Was Poisoned by my Body" also has an impressive number of tips on specific tests and other products she has methodically sorted out.
But the book in question has some tips on making kefir and cultured veggies that some might think helpful if you don't mind vague recommendations that a certain vegetable "strengthens the spleen" or "cleanses the liver".

It seems that in most cases that nonfiction authors are motivated by one of two things when creating their works. Some feel that they have some sort of information that needs sharing, and use books as a way to get their word out. These authors have a true passion for their topic, which clearly shows when reading their books. Others are driven purely by profit. Sadly, it seems that the latter is true of Donna Gates and her Body Ecology Diet. Though this book does cover an important topic, it lacks substance and fails to deliver. However, it may be a good source for someone used to only mainstream health books and wanting a simple primer on the subject.
While the book is easy to read, it seems to offer no new information that is not readily available in other books or on the internet. Gates seems to favor certain foods and products, such as coconut water kefir, yet fails to thoroughly justify her preference for them, and supports her claims with little scientific research. However, her section on the same subject does offer an excellent guide on making the coconut water kefir, which serves as one of the few saving graces of this book.
This brings me to one of the biggest gripes I have with Body Ecology Diet. Throughout the book are references to her website for more information. Unfortunately, the website fails to thoroughly expound on any of the topics in her book, and instead bombards visitors with a myriad of products that are touted as miracle cures to everything from Attention Deficit Disorder and Autism to Sexual Dysfunction. Of course, a majority of these products are sold either through her own storefront or through affiliate sites, earning her a hefty profit. While this review is about Gates' book, not her website, it is made relevant by the numerous times that the book refers readers to it, instructing them to purchase some product that is necessary if you want to follow her diet. In other words, don't expect to be able to follow Gates' version of the Candida diet without purchasing items from her storefront, or a well-stocked health food store.
I do not mean for this review to turn people off of a diet that targets Candida. It is simply that other books, such as Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats, offer much more information, back it up with more hard evidence, and more importantly, do not require you to purchase more products from the author. Candidiasis is a real condition, and ridding yourself of it will bring about real improvements in your energy level and weight, among other things. It is just that Gates' work feels like a shallow and self-promoting rehash of currently available information. The most important thing when finding a book on the subject is finding one that works well for you. Therefore, I recommend readers look for a book written with passion that truly moves you to follow its advice. While this book's approach may work for some, I found myself wanting more.

I bought this book based on a recommendation from a friend. I have been reading a number of books on nutrition in efforts to feel better. This book includes things that are being discussed in other books such as Ultra Metabolism. Avoid foods that can cause yeast growth, or other potentially allergic foods - wheat, dairy, sugar, yeast. While I liked the recipes in the book, and the overall concept of starchy vs. non-starchy foods and balancing them with proteins and grains. I was looking for that "master list" of foods that categorize them. This part was skimpy and placed throughout the book, making it difficult to find.
Also, the recommended diet plan was difficult to follow and incomplete. One cannot expect to completely change one's eating habits overnight a this book suggests that you do. Also, the recommendation that you need to buy their products isn't helpful. One needs a healthy eating plan that doesn't steer you away too drastically from your current eating plan.
This is a great book to continue learning about healthy eating and how what you eat affects how you feel. I'll keep the book and refer to it, but it won't be my food bible.

As some one who has studied nutrition for a long time, I can safely say that this book is the most comprehensive that I've encountered, especially for those with an imbalanced or impaired immune system or digestive tract. The diet is pretty strict, especially when it comes to sugar, but if healing, health, and wellness are your goal, stick with it, because it works. The book has given me a new appreciation for whole foods, and it's also given me my taste buds back!! I actually enjoy the taste of vegetables again. If shedding weight is your goal, then this diet will do it for you as well-just stick with it! I was already in good shape when I started, and I lost 10 pounds, gained lean muscle, and my skin took on a healthy glow. It's also introduced me to things like coconut water kefir, and other healthy, delicious snacks. I recommend this book over any other in terms of nutrition for healing. Thank you Donna Gates.

Donna's book is an information powerhouse, especially for those who may be in search for an answer to health related issues. Food sensitivities should be considered first and foremost when health has gone awry. Just as doctors often use a "rule out" theory when trying to solve medical mysteries, the average person can also have some control over his or her health by paying close attention to the fuel that we expect our bodies to run efficiently on. This book is dealing with whys and what- or how-to-dos.
I'm not a cancer patient, but my father died of lung cancer recently and suddenly
.
So I got extremely interested with everyday health issues, especially about diet and supplements.
This book will be helpful, if your loved ones suffer cancers or severe diseases or even minor ones, and if you wanna make sure your way of living is good for you and your family, because It tries to explain what we have to consider.
I'm sure there would be way much better than this book, but that doesn't make this a bad book.
Trying to explain is the one why I love this book.
Wish your best health and also mine and my family's!

I am undergoing some really rough chemo treatments. Round 1 chemo left me achy and pretty much in bed for most of a week. My doctor told me there was nothing they could do for the fatigue. I looked at Dr. Blaylock's book and he recommended a supplement called Propax with NT Factor. I started taking it (with my doctor's permission) a few days before round 2 Chemo and the improvement is remarkable.
Dr. Blaylock also gives a lot of advice for any number of chemo side effects as well as ways of fighting cancer with nutrition. My advice is to buy this book - it is well worth it's price.

EXCELLENT INFO ON SUPPLEMENTS TARGETTING TUMOR SUPRESSION

My 43 year old husband was recently diagnosed with terminal lung cancer as a result of his radiation treatment 10 years ago for his Hogkins lymphoma. He underwent 4 months of chemo and also was fortunate to consult with a oncology nutritionist who recommended various supplements, some used in Europe for cancer therapy and not classified there as "supplements". My husband has the rarest type of lung cancer and it is typically described as the least responsive to chemo. The supplements recommended by the nutritionist target tumor supression, and angiogenesis (the ability of a tumor to create it's own blood vessels and spread). I bought this book because I was wowed and awed by another book of his, "Nutrional secrets that will save your life", or something like that. That the author is a neurosurgeon got my attention as someone I could likely trust to adequately research what supplements are effective for cancer. The book is easy to read and explains the action of the cancer fighting supplements, and is appropriate for readers without a medical background. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning how to not only safely fight cancer (and without all the side effects of Western medicine) but also how to prevent cancer and increase their overall immune system.

This book is a must for those who have cancer and preparing for chemo and radiation. The key is that supplements actually enhances the effectiveness of the twin killers while enhancing the immunre and strength of the body.

I wish I had read this book before I went through radiation and chemo. Even so, it has been a tremendous help to me in controlling my metastatic disease. It really gave me hope and a feeling of empowerment. It changed my life and very well may prove to have been a major turning point for the better in my health.
I have a fairly good science background so this book was a piece of cake for me to comprehend. However, many folks might find a few of the medical words a bit technical. If so, just move on. The big words are not essential to understanding the important points. You will get some very valuable information from this book.
Thank you Dr. Blaylock.

I found this book to be a fascinating, but very practical study of nutrition. It was presented in a way that is easily understood. It lays out a plan that the average person can apply to their daily life to change over to a healthy life style. I would say that reading this book was a life-changing event for me----I have also shared this book with my family and loved ones.

I looked into buying some books to discuss the Mediterranean/Crete/Omega diet. I did like this book the best compared to the others I had bought (Mediterranean Prescription, and The Anti-inflammation Diet and Recipe Book). This gave a worded description of how the author ate growing up and gave a concise way to think about what you are eating - think fresh and simple.
Like most "diet" books there are sections on why this works scientifically and some meal plans for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It is helpful but I did skim the first few chapters. There is also a "food pyramid" and many helpful tables as to what you should try to fit into your diet.
I have been following the advice of this book (adapting the meal plans to what is doable long term for my spouse and I) and I can honestly say that I feel good, calm, and not hungry. Plus I love it that drinking a glass of wine with dinner is acceptable!
For people who are looking for a face lift on your diet, I do recommend this book.

I was surprised that this book was copyrighted in 1998. It seems that we have just now caught up with what she knew back then about essential fatty acids. That part of the book is very good and I am glad that we have finally caught up with her on this.
I haven't tried any of her recipes but I it seems that many of the recipes do not follow her traditional Greek way of cooking. I mean canola oil, for instance, certainly is not a part of traditional cooking anywhere. It is a relatively modern phenomena. She also uses white sugar and white flour in some of her recipes. Come on! These things were not part of the traditional Greek diet. And, really, do you think they used low-fat dairy products. Give us a break!

As a mother of a little boy who was just diagnosed, I thought Jenny is right on with everything she says that she did to help her little boy in this book! I don't know why the first reviewer found this book so offensive because I found it be the very opposite of that. I found this book as a source of inspiration and hope-especially with a diagnosis that can leave you feeling helpless and alone. There is help and out there and you can get that help to help your son/daughter. I really loved Jenny's passion when talking about her son, and I could totally relate to alot of the things that she went through while searching through the medical community to find out what exactly was wrong with her son. I also loved the "What to Do Pamplet" at the back of the book so that she can try and help some of us who have just received our diagnosis and need to know where to go. All in all, this book was helpful and inspiring that I too can pull up my sleeves and help my child with as much vigor and passion as Jenny has with her son!! I give this book two HUGE thumbs up!!!!

I finished reading Jenny McCarthy's book "Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism" and I have to say it was one of the best books I have ever read and I am so glad I read it. I read it in a day because I could not stop. It was so good, sad, educational, and some parts were even a little funny because of course Jenny McCarthy can find a way to make you laugh even when talking about something as serious as her child having autism. Her humor is truly a gift. It helps lighten the mood when reading so it is not the most depressing thing you have ever read and you can get through it because the whole situation is heartbreaking but she is so positive and has such a wonderful attitude which is what helps so much in healing her son.
I had a couple reasons for wanting to read this book, one being I had read her other books: Belly Laughs, Baby Laughs, and Life Laughs and of course gained an interest in what was going on with her and her baby but also because with Autism now effecting 1 in 150 children I figured I should learn more about it because it might someday effect one of my children (I currently have a 3 month old and she is my first child) or if not surely the child of someone I know. I did not even know anyone with Autism, I only knew people that knew people who had Autism, or so I thought. I recently learned I actually know some people whose children have a form of Autism and I did not know it until now and I told them about the book already. I realized after reading the first two pages that I did not know much at Autism at all. Actually just reading the title made me realize I didn't know much because I did not think it could be healed. I always heard there is no cure, which technically there is not yet, but there are things you can try that work for a lot of children, especially if it is caught and addressed very early, and although they may never be completely healed they end up living almost normal lives. I also wanted to read the book because I was very curious about something that in the 1970's only affected 1 in 10,000 children now effects 1 in 150 and they are still not sure what the cause is. Jenny says in the book that this is something we should be concerned about more than global warming because if it keeps increasing and ends up being almost every child, what are people going to do, stop having kids? At this rate, I think we should be more concerned about this.
Another thing I learned about Autism from this book is there are many forms. Some kids have severe cases and some have mild cases even before treatment (some go from severe to mild with treatment like her child). Also, Jenny believes, and I agree with her, that Autism does not seem to be one disease/disorder. It seems to be several problems children have that have been given one name which is another reason children with Autism are so different. I think it is basically a lot of problems children are having and they don't know what is wrong so if they have certain symptoms they call it Autism. One reason she has so much success in healing him is because she doesn't just do things to cover up the problems with a temporary bandaid, she always ask herself what is causing the problem and tries to eliminate the cause.
She does not think that vaccines cause Autism but does believe there is a link there and so do I. She believes some kids are born with weaker immune systems and can't handle the vaccines. She is still for giving children vaccines of course, but thinks they should do something like maybe a test beforehand to determine the effects it may have on a child and she is also for greening our vaccines, which is not in her book, but I read on the internet that her and Jim Carrey are currently urging congress to makes vaccines safer because they have so many dangerous things in them. After reading several of her books, I personally think it also has something to do with an injury to the head her son received while she was giving birth to him. He had to wear a helmet for a short time as a baby to correct the shape or his head which was misshaped due to the difficulties in labor which resulted in a c-section and she talks about this in her Baby Laughs book not this book but I see a link because in this book the first sign of Autism her son has is seizures and the one thing they would always ask her at the hospital when he had a seizure was did he suffer an injury to the head and she would of course say no and did not understand why they were asking that until she later found out that injuries to a certain part of the brain cause seizures of course. I don't know if she ever even linked the two together but I did after reading both books.
I would highly recommend this book to everyone because I think everyone should be educated on the subject but would especially recommend it to anyone who has a child with Autism because most doctors, including Jenny's just basically send you out the door with the comment "I'm sorry but your child has Autism" like there is nothing you can do and she found out from other parents with Autistic children that there are some things you can do, or at least try. If it were my child, I would try everything just like she did whether it worked or not, at least you are trying and there is some hope instead of just giving up. I think the book she has coming out next month, which I also plan on reading, would be even more help to parents with Autism though because she wrote it due to the response she got from other parents with Autism after reading her first book and things they did to heal their child so in that book she shares their stories since each child with Autism is different and the new book also gives you an update on how her son is doing now.

My respect for Jenny McCarthy has increased ten fold after hearing about and then reading her story. I first 'met' Jenny McCarthy back when MTV was still in its first stages and never would have guessed! Yes, I admit, I probably would have judged her on first impressions back in those days but she has taught me a valuable lesson. What a wonderful beautiful mom she is! I heard of her story when I caught a few moments of a TV interview when the book first came out. I was instantly touched and rushed out to purchase the book. My heart breaks for the struggles she and her son have faced. Her courage, determination, and love for her son have shown the world one person CAN make a difference and there is always hope.
I hope others will read of their journey together and be inspired as well. Jenny and her son certainly touched my heart and have made me more aware of nightmare families dealing with Autism can face. May those with the ability to limit those nightmares be inspired to do so as well.

Some things which should be noted about this book before going into it.
1. At no point does Ms. McCarthy claim to be a medical expert. Indeed, she goes out of her way to note her lack of medical qualifications and notes that this book is just a journal of her experiences as she grew into being the mother of an autistic child.
2. She does not claim that mercury vaccines are responsible for causing autism. She only mentions mercury once and that is to mention the theory and say that more research needs to be done to confirm it one way or the other.
3. The therapies she uses for her son are expensive and well outside the means of most families. But most therapies are, especially those dubbed experimental by HMOs and the health-care providers that most of us go through. Again, McCarthy notes this.
4. McCarthy does use a lot of salty language. This shouldn't be a surprise for anyone who is familiar with her comedy but it seems to be enough to inspire some parents to ignore the message and give it a 1 star rating besides. If this bothers you, you don't have to read the book. But don't go out of your way to trash it.
All in all, I found this book to be enjoyable for what it is - a first-person account of a young woman growing up and developing into a mother and a better person. And however you feel about Ms. McCarthy's comedy (I personally can't stand it), you have to admire her desire to try and share her story and give the parents of autistic children the respect that they deserve with her charity work.

I was disappointed in this book because I thought it would have a listing of a most foods and their value in the Zone block system. However, it is not this at all. They go through hundreds of prepared foods, say, Weigh Watchers meals, and tells the blocks for those. I am making food by scratch, so I had to return the book because it did not apply to my family. I never was much of a cook, but after embarking on a rigorous fitness program, I was highly encouraged by my personal trainer to cook my own meals. By cooking myself, I would know exactly what I was eating. Although I don't have a heart problem (that I know about, anyway), I saw this cookbook when I was visiting someone in the hospital and noted that it was extensive and varied. It also listed the calories and other nutritional information for each recipe. So when I decided to cook, I ordered a copy. I have to say that I am very pleased. The recipes are very easy to follow, even for the novice. I don't confuse the results with gourmet meals, but they are light and tasty. Thanks to this cookbook, I eat a very varied and healthy diet and look forward every week to trying new things. That is quite a change from my old habits, where I bought a lot of prepackaged meals and tended to eat the same things week after week. I also have a cabinet full of spices that I actually use. If you are looking for a good starter cookbook for healthy eating, I highly recommend this book.

Did you know the staff at Cooking Light magazine compiles their recipes and releases them as a hardcover book every year? Each of the books have a three-way index: one is listed by main ingredient, one by the month in which it originally appeared, and one by the name of the dish. Recipes cover everything from appetizers to desserts, and each includes nutrition information. There are also mini-features discussing everything from seasonal vegetables to what the various cuts of beef mean. After Joy of Cooking, I probably use Cooking Light the most--I just made their version of coconut shrimp last weeekend and loved it. The brilliant folks at Cooking Light demonstrate that it's more than possible to come up with a nutritious version of all of our favorite comfort foods!

All have been great! I usually pick something new from the book to serve to dinner guests. They are never disappointed! Recipes are clear, easy to understand and delicious. They have food from different ethnicities to help keep this fresh and different. They even include menus for themed parties and seasons. I haven't looked for another cookbook since.

Cooking Light Annual Recipes 2007 (Cooking Light Annual Recipes)
This is a great cookbook. It's fun to browse through and easy to use with common ingredients, good photos and foolproof instructions. While the recipes are not super low-cal, they're reasonably low calorie and provide both everyday and 'company' recipes.

The go to cookbook in our house...

I have not cooked from any other cookbook since I brought this home. Every recipe we have tried has been so good. Healthy recipes that taste good, not bland. How can you go wrong?
