This books was first published in 1981 and again in 1991 and 1999. When my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 1995, I became aware of this book and purchased copies for my four siblings and my father. It was a God-send to us; as we learned quite a lot about the desease and the day to day caring for her. One thing I learned was no matter how many times she would repeat and repeat and repeat the same story, I would just say "oh, really" and just let her go on and on. Previously, I would say things like "mom, you already TOLD me this a million times." This would upset her and cause her much agitation. Mom has passed on (12/24/2000), but I like to think we helped her go without a lot of angst and agitation. Please read the book. It has many, many fine points. Thank you. m

If you have a family member with Alzheimers you must read this. It explains what and sometimes why Alzheimers patients act like they do, and how difficult it can be to care for them. Even if you are not a caregiver this will help understand the stresses caused by having a family member with Alzheimers. Also gives good advice on how to deal with difficult circumstances that will arise.

I am a caregiver, and this is very helpful.
It is a great reference book.
It helps to know I am not the only one dealing with these issues.
And that some of the things happening are a completely natural part of the aging process.

This book has been quite a blessing for those times when I need to look something up regarding this illness. I know that I'll find just the help I need and great ideas to make life easier when a family member is dealing with this. It's so great to have a reference book handy that seems to have all the answers I need. I am most grateful for this resource.

I wanted to start being a bit healthier about what I was making for dinner so I bought this cookbook. It has many tastey and healthy receipes to choose from. There are breakfast, lunch, and dinner receipes included for 15, 20, 30 min. I would say this is the cookbook I use the most.

I'm always looking for healthier options for meals and this book is great for that! I've only tried a couple so far but they've been very tasty and relatively easy to prepare, even for me, a total beginner in the kitchen! They did take a little longer than the 15, 20, or 30 minutes, but that could have been because I'm kind of new at preparing meals so I'm probably slower than the average cook. I'm very happy with my purchase and plan to use it alot!

I love this cookboook. Everything I have tried is delicious and easy. One of my favorites is a black bean salad with corn and avocado. I have tried the Texas Cavier, Cauliflower soup, a chocolate shake, and a fruit salad. All were excellent. Highly recommended.

I can tell you from my experience in buying this particular WW book that the recipe's are fantastic and all stay true to the timing of the recipe's! Even the 10 minute meals are GREAT!! My hubby was skeptical about eating the 30 minute meals and he absolutely loves them and NOW HE is making them! He's really the better chef in this house since he retired and he absolutely loves this cook book! You WILL lose weight with this book if you follow the instructions and get the right ingredients-don't worry!! And you'll NOT BE SORRY you got this book-that's for sure. I had a hard time choosing which one to start with and I'm so happy I chose THIS ONE b/c of it having 10, 20 and 30 minute recipe's.
Also don't forget to buy yourself a WW calculator-it's an tool that is very valuable for days when you're on the go and don't have time to cook anything in this book! You can get them on Ebay for $20 if you look around and not have to pay tax OR shipping. I got mine from some place called something like: Treetop Collectables or something close to that. I just know it is GREAT and a HUGE HUGE HELP as this book I got at Amazon. Also, I was shocked to buy this book from Amazon and get it TWO DAYS LATER!!! I didn't pay extra for fast shipping either-got the free shipping and presto-I had the book so fast I was shocked!! Folks, we live out in the boonies and they STILL got me this book so quickly after I ordered it-it was unreal!!
You won't regret buying this book-trust me!! It is GREAT!!!!!!!!

I checked this book out from the library a while back and decided to give the diet a try since it seemed to me to be a really healthy way to lose weight. The premise is to eat the right things (lean meats, vegetables, fruits, whole grains) in the proper proportions (seems like sound advice to me). Tie this with a good exercise program (which you will have to find elsewhere) and you will lose weight.
I agree that the recipes in the book are sometimes involved to prepare and often require kind of expensive ingredients. I'm a bit of a foodie and love to cook so this really isn't a problem for me and I've enjoyed making many of the recipes in this book and in the companion 'Sonoma Diet Recipes' book (which I highly recommend). Those people that claim, however, that the diet takes too much work or is inflexible did not read the book very carefully. You are by no means restricted to the recipes outlined in this book. You are given lists of allowable foods (quite extensive) and you can eat anything that is made from those foods so long as they are prepared in a healthy manner. Yes, you will have to prepare some food at home, but we need to be doing that anyway. Let's face it, there just really aren't too many healthy options when you eat out and our insistence on convenience food was probably a major factor in our current need to lose weight. That said, I also believe that preparing healthy food at home does not have to be excessively time consuming. Throw some rice in a rice cooker, steam some vegetables (frozen is even faster), put some meat on the grill and you can have a great healthy meal in less time than you will wait for the food to get to your table at the restaurant! Find a cookbook for quick meals (15 min, 30 min, whatever) or search online and find some recipes that use sonoma diet foods. Substitute a few things if you have to (e.g. olive oil instead of butter) and cook away. This doesn't have to be that complicated! If you are looking for some great easy recipes, I would recommend subscribing to 'Everyday Food' magazine. I do and find that a good majority of the recipes are very sonoma friendly, they are easy, and they taste great.
Now, as far as my personal experience with this diet goes, I lost about 15 pounds in about 5 weeks (which was my goal). One of the things that I liked best about this diet is that I feel so good while I am doing it. I have more energy, I sleep better, and I actually look forward to eating again! Plus, I reached the point where the thought of consuming a quarter pounder or a bottle of soda actually made me feel ill. My body did not want them anymore because the food I was eating made me feel so much better. So, my advice is to give this a try but remember that it's not an exact science, it does not have to be complicated and it's more of a philosophy on eating right than anything.

I did not follow the diet itself, but I used and continue to use many of the recipes, which I find delicious. Since I like all of the "power foods," I'm happy to cook from this book. As so many reviewers have said, it doesn't feel like you're on a diet.
I lost 100 pounds in less than a year and a half, in part because I changed my way of cooking and eating, thanks to "The Sonoma Diet."

I've followed the plan faithfully. YES the diet works best if you cook at home. YES cooking at home requires time and effort. YES you have to plan your meals ahead of time. YES you have to plan your grocery list before you go to the store. But what diet doesn't require these things?
I've faithfully been on the diet for 5 weeks now and as such I've tried almost every recipe in this book. The recipes are well written, easy to follow, contain ingredients easy to find in most grocery stores, and produce great results. Many of the recipes use cilantro, parsley, marjoram, rosemary or cumin as flavor enhancers. Particularly good is the Marinated Flank steak recipe in Wave 1. I've served it 3 times for dinner parties and have gotten rave reviews on it. Conversely, none of the "en papillote" recipes turned out very well (vegetables always turn out undercooked and don't have much flavor).
Bottom line: Like all diets, this one requires effort. The extra effort does pay off in weight loss. The delicious recipes and variety of foods are what help make this diet easier to stick with. I'd recommend buying the cookbook as well for a larger variety of dishes.
Drawbacks: this is definitely a book for carnivores. Most of the vegetarian recipes are side dishes and do not have enough substance to carry themselves as main dishes.
Bonus: My husband and 2 year old daughter enjoy the food as much as I do.

I never was much of a cook, but after embarking on a rigorous fitness program, I was highly encouraged by my personal trainer to cook my own meals. By cooking myself, I would know exactly what I was eating. Although I don't have a heart problem (that I know about, anyway), I saw this cookbook when I was visiting someone in the hospital and noted that it was extensive and varied. It also listed the calories and other nutritional information for each recipe. So when I decided to cook, I ordered a copy. I have to say that I am very pleased. The recipes are very easy to follow, even for the novice. I don't confuse the results with gourmet meals, but they are light and tasty. Thanks to this cookbook, I eat a very varied and healthy diet and look forward every week to trying new things. That is quite a change from my old habits, where I bought a lot of prepackaged meals and tended to eat the same things week after week. I also have a cabinet full of spices that I actually use. If you are looking for a good starter cookbook for healthy eating, I highly recommend this book.

I think I finally found the holy grail! I have been studying nutrition topics for more than 15 years, and this book really breaks down the details of the hormones involved in weight loss/ weight gain. They have done a great job gathering all the research together and deciphering it. I like how they show that simple vitamin and amino acid combos can help reset things. What I do not like is that they push their own products. They will say you need one version of a vitamin that is "more bio-available" and they just happen to be one of a few people that carry that product for a really high price. Amazing that. I am still experimenting with the nutritional supplements to see how well their advice works in the practical world. But for the science part of it I am very pleased.
Excellent!

The concepts are clearly explained and the possible implications and expectations.
I would like the author be consistent with the supplements suggested in the book and that are advertised on [...] and a link to any outdated information in this edition of the book to the present research.
Otherwise its a amazing book !!!

This is a pretty good, straighforward book about Leptin and if Leptin is important to you(and I think it should be), it's one of the best to get. It's a lot better than the Rosedale book on the subject - much more succinct and useful, much better writeen.

The authors are only willing to help the chosen ones. Mother didn't nurse you when you were born? Hopeless. Took some amphedimines in college while studying for final exams? Hopeless. You get the idea. So, if you're one of those perfect people who lived a Susie-Creamcheese life, this is the book for you. But, if you're so perfect, why would you need it? Gave them 2 stars for research alone; wouldn't recommend this book to any of my friends.

The book is exactly as it represents itself. It provides a great deal of information about many different foods so that one may make appropriate food choices according to his/her health needs.

This book's data on fat and carbohydrates is insufficent for modern diets. It does has a lot of other useful data, some useless data, and is missing a lot of expected products.
The biggest problem is the way fat is listed. Saturated fat, unsaturated fat, and trans fat are all lumped into a single number for total fat. This makes the book inadequate for Atkins or South Beach dieters. You can't tell good fats from bad.
The listings show total carbohydrates, and dietary fiber, but they don't show net carbs, or sugar alcohols. This is important for dieters and diabetics since many of our specialty foods are sweetened with these substitutes. Of course, the book generally omits diet foods, so this may not matter.
There is no information about vitamins or minerals.
It does contain a lot of useful information about basic ingredients that are often sold without nutritional labels (for example, fresh meat and vegetables). There's also a lot of information about foods served at chain restaurants, which is useful for deciding to where to go.
The bulk of the data seems to have been copied from prepared food product labels. This isn't very useful, since I can usually just look at the package, though it is sometimes convenient. It's even less useful for the obsolete products.
A lot of obvious expected products are missing. I can't find any mention of diet soft drinks, diet meal bars, diet shakes, low-carb foods, or liquor. Beer and wine are mentioned, but in poor detail. Beer has only two entries: "regular" and "light". If they can devote 4 pages to different brands of fully-sugared soft drinks, they could at least tell us the differences between a stout and an india pale ale. Wine is a little better. They list desert, red, rose, and white. However, I find it difficult to believe a sweet white zinfandel has the same numbers as a dry chardonnay.
This book wasn't a complete waste of money, but I still want something better.

I have been receiving Rolfing treatment for a while and had experienced a lot of improvement but I wanted more. I eventually realised that no treatment is going to work unless after/in between treatments you make life style or muscle movement pattern changes. I first came across the free down loadable article on Mary Bonds website about sitting. This article is one of the chapters in the book. After, following the advice on sitting, I experienced immediate benefit, so I decided to buy the book. I haven't yet worked my wat through the whole of the book - that will take several months - but after 2 weeks and working on the feet and breathing execises in particular I have experienced releif from a groin pain I have had for 2 years plus. This isn't an overnight fix book, real results will take 6 months of dilignetly following the program. If you are prepared to put in the time and effort for this sort of time frame, I recomend this book. At the very least the book is a good explantion of how the body can function optimaly.

The New Rules of Posture: How to Sit, Stand, and Move by Mary Bond is a must read if you're interested in increasing your somatic awareness of your body in motion. Hoorah! finally someone writes about the body as a moving entity and not as a stable unit moving just one joint at a time. Posture for Bond is not about standing still and sticking your chest out, but about how you move is number one of the new rules. Bond writes, "your posture is the product of the ongoing perceptual activities through which you orient yourself to your world."
Bond's goal is to make readers more aware of opening the body up to the world. The entire book focuses on the action of walking to gain an understanding of what Bond calls open stabilization and open orientation. These terms of Bond's encourage movement without unnecessarily tensing muscles in the body that over time develops fascial adhesions and ultimately leads to restricted movement and decreased range of motion. Fascial adhesions where two or more fascia stick together can occur in a variety of locations because fascia, the connective tissue in the body, is everywhere. In fact Bond writes that if everything in our bodies were taken away fascia would maintain a recognizable human form.
Things can get pretty complicated when posture is theorized as dynamic, but Bond is clear and precise. She divides her book into four sections: awareness, stability, orientation, and motion. Each section builds on the next. Threaded through each section are Bond's six zones of the body: breathing muscles, abdomen, pelvic floor, hands, feet and head. Bond states that all six regions are connected anatomically and unnecessary tension in any one of them causes a reaction in all of them.
To help guide the reader to change bodily habits, Bond uses explorations throughout the book. For example she writes, "stand comfortably as though you are waiting in line for movie tickets. Then take a step forward toward the ticket window. Notice which leg took the step." In this exploration entitled, "your best foot" Bond's point is that because the spine accommodates the habits you have with your legs, if you have a strong preference for one leg over the other it could cause misalignment all the way up to your jaw.
Throughout the book are fascinating facts and relationships in the body that if nothing else will help you to reconceive of your bodily connections. For example, Bond writes losing too much carbon dioxide by breathing too quickly can cause everything from depression to low back pain; she cautions against tightening the sacrum because it prevents your feet from meeting the ground successfully; and ,warns against performing the same movement over and over again. Why? Because repetition without staying aware of bodily signals diminishes our consciousness. All in all The New Rules of Posture enhances our consciousness and is a book to go back to again and again each time with a deeper understanding of the moving body.

A truly unique book I keep coming back to.
As a dance teacher, it helped me recognize patterns of misalignment in my students and helped me identify the causes.
As a dancer, it helped me be more aware of my posture.

I bought this book because Andy Weil suggested it in his newsletter, and I know that at age 78, I need to do something about my posture; I'm beginning to stoop and droop.
I usually trust Andy, but not this time. The book is way too long and too complicated. I can't wade my way through it, though I keep trying. Also, it doesn't seem geared to older people.
I wish the author would condense her findings and advice into about 15 pages, with illustrations, and drop all the complicated stuff. Maybe I'm too impatient. I'm just reporting how it was for me.

I found this book, The New Rules of Posture, extremely helpful and accessible. The text is crisp and moves along nicely. In addressing the quasi-intangible subject of posture, an author could easily tend toward the abstract and miss the opportunity to provide substantial answers; conversely, detailed analysis of the human body's myriad and complex patterns, movements and compensations could, in the wrong hands, bog. Luckily--rather, skillfully--Mary Bond successfully dances the edge--exquisitely combining light-hearted, sometimes playful imagery with just the right amount of intellectual detail to elicit keen interest and assure that her corrective suggestions, while artfully applied, are sound and rooted in science. I also appreciated the comprehensive cross-referencing that allowed me to navigate quickly topics of primary interest before my cover-to-cover read.

So, what? Trudeau's trying to make money. Who isn't??? Seriously, have you ever seen a commercial or advertisement for a natural non-toxic herbal remedy? Do you pinch at least two loafs a day?
I don't understand why someone who recommends fasting & cleansing to elimate toxins, home-cooked organic foods, and walking may help PREVENT (which Trudeau explains is his "cure") disease is a dishonest scam-artist, but a gigantic for-profit company that sells you FOOD that contains high fructose corn syrup, alpha tocopherol acetate, and pyroxidoxine hydrochloride (ingredients in Special-K cereal) should be trusted. Then you run to those SAME companies to buy the drugs for your diabetes, fibromyalgia, and acid reflux disease though the side affects may be liver cancer, stroke, OR death? Wow, how sad!
Well, I guess when we say "God bless America" we should ask him to SUPERSIZE it.

Since I have tried some of the many things he mentions in this book I have seen a major difference in my health and vitality. It is a disgrace that how the FTC and FDA would post fraudulent comments on the internet stating that he is a scam and dear to address his past (like who have not had a bad past). Don't believe the negative post messages on the site and other internet post message sites because they are either people of government agency and pharmaceutical companiies trying to debunk or discredit him through the use of false disguises. I personally experience my weight beginning to melt and my clothes begin to fit me loosely. He is not a fraud.

The book wasn't clear, concise, or to the point regarding debt--not even close! It was repetitious and quite boring to be quite honest. Having the audio format, had I heard the phrase "it's a scam", one more time, I would have flung the disc out of the window, instead...I returned it for refund--I couldn't take it any more! Remember--timely delivery, straight forward, and a less whiney approach in conveying a message,Debt Cures "They" Don't Want You to Know About is what it's all about!

While ths is at times a provocative and intriguing book it does not deliver on specifics (regarding its miracle cancer/ heart-disease cures etc) and degenerates in its final chapters to questionable bromides (for example "do not eat after six pm", "don't read the newspaper", "breathe") and references his web-sites that offer premium health care products.
