Suzanne Somer's Eat, Cheat and Melt the Fat AwayReview Date: 2007-08-16
Suzanne's book has been a huge Eye-Opener on educating me of the way in which we eat and how our body's respond. No wonder many are overweight. They just lack the Education.
Many Thanks to Suzanne, I can't wait to read her other books to learn more!

CON: some of the ingredients and just a marketing ploy.
CON: It makes no mention of what to do if you're lactose intolerant.
CON: How do you thicken a sauce without cornstarch? Arrowroot? Pretty hard to locate in most grocery stores. File Gumbo? Makes a green gloppy mess out of your meal.
CON: Somewhat poorly written, more poorly compiled into a book, and the person or persons in charge of the index need to be educated (back to school with you now!) in compiling a COMPREHENSIVE index. Facts and figures are just too hard to find in this book.
PRO: SHe's probably rich from sales of this re-hash of Atkins, Sugar-busters, and Carb Addicts.
PRO: She's easier on the eyes than Atkins was!

Make your workouts something to look forward to.Review Date: 2008-07-13
Nothing beats dumbbells. I bought this book because I have a unique problem at this time and needed a way to workout but take it easy on a torn rotator cuff. I can't lift the barbell at all because my right arm has lost most of it's mobility. It's coming back but it's not totally back.
So I needed a way to workout and not let my muscles atrophy. So now I can use a lighter weight in my right hand and my regular heavy weight in my left and do bench presses. No, it's not ideal. But it works.
Of course, that's not what this book is about. It's not for those with injuries. It's for anyone. All you really need are dumbbells. The author even tells you the various types you can get and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
To your dumbbells you will probably want to add a bench or, at the least, a fitness ball. But for a small investment, you can get all you need to get a real workout in the privacy of your home. And I mean a "safe" workout.
The author gives exercises for all levels. He describes them fully and tells you how you should go about each exercise, how many reps and sets.
Oh, and gals, don't be afraid to buy the book. You have muscles too.
This is a great resource and I highly recommend it to you.

I like this book, but....Review Date: 2007-08-08
The first section gives an excellent introduction to dumbbells & pros and cons of different types of equipment. I personally use the Powerblock dumbbells. The second section has pictures of each basic, intermediate, and combined set of exercises. Part three is small, but has example exercises and helps you to customize a workout.
There was one odd thing about the book. There is a picture of a kettle bell on one of the introductory pages, but there isn't a mention of them or their use anywhere in the book. This was an unexpected surprise and then letdown. In all it is a great book. It only gets four stars because it *does not* give the ideology behind different workout techniques: high intensity training, pre/post exhaust techniques, progressive workload, 21s, 3X3 workouts, supersets, forced negatives, etc.
My advice is to buy this book or Brzycki's and also get Arnold's The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding.

Real-life experience backs this upReview Date: 2008-07-07
I'm an engineer, a conservative and a skeptic. I was not ready to believe that there is "bad stuff" in our everyday food. But based on my husband's experiences, the empirical evidence to the contrary is overwhelming. His symptoms initially only occurred after lunch but not after dinner, even if he ate the same thing. How does this make sense? Dr. Blaylock explains the mystery by pointing out how hypoglycemia exacerbates the effects of glutamate. I was ecstatic when I understood the phenomenon. My husband has a tendency, common in his family, toward hypoglycemia. With lunch being his first meal of the day, he was already in a hypoglycemic state and highly susceptible to the effects of MSG. By dinnertime, his brain had more glucose and was better able to clear the glutamate. Based on this theory, when he accidentally eats MSG and starts to experience the effects, he consumes a candy bar or sugared soda and it lessens the symptoms. (Dessert can be good for you!)
The explanations in this book are the only ones that satisfactorily explain what I see my husband go through every day. He has an immediate and recognizable response to glutamate, which makes confirmation of those theories simple, if not painless.
There is one hypothesis in the book that is contradicted by my husband's experience. He can consume aspartame (diet soda) with none of the effects that he experiences from glutamate.
I wonder how many people are capable of making the lifestyle changes required to avoid glutamate? If you don't have a detector (like my poor husband) to tell you what food does and does not have glutamate in it, you must avoid all prepared food that doesn't have an ingredient list. Yes, sadly, glutamate is that prevalent in our food.

It is up to the individual to inform oneself as to the dangers of excitotoxins in our foods, vaccines, and pharmaceuticals; and give
thoughtful, coherent consideration to the information that has been made
available by a credible source.
My husband and I have already made changes in what we ingest that taste
so damn good, i.e., those addictive additives in our foods; unnecessary, damaging poisonous pharmaceuticals that place all of us in a 'revolving door' to physician calls, sickness, and surgery.
I have subscribed to Blaylock's newsletters, and will continue to eliminate
those 'excitotoxins,' which are gradually killing us. The side-effects
resulting from poisonous pharmaceuticals and food additives must give one pause.

But this book did help. The essence of Iyengar yoga is explained and you can hear direct from Mr. Iyengar himself. The book has Mr. Iyengar's description of postures so you can learn how he describes the postures.
Also I liked practicing the sequences at the end of the book, they had a certain rhythm and flow to it. This book also has tons of color photo's and a large section on using yoga for helping all types of health conditions. The only downside was not too much knowledge on the more advanced sequences. The book is more suited for beginning - intermediate yoga practitionersCure Tooth Decay: Heal and Prevent Cavities with Nutrition.

A must have bookReview Date: 2008-09-22
The book lists 101 individual fruits, vegetables, grains, herbs, spices. Almost all are common everyday items with only a few that may not be in your local supermarkets such as goji berries (you can order via mail on Amazon for instance), amaranth (a grain), and teff (a grain from Ethiopia).
The only animal products listed are eggs, salmon, sardines, yogurt, and whey.
Each entry has an quote/saying/intro , history, where its grown, why you should eat it, highlights of its qualities, special pros and/or cons, home remedy uses, special food studies on it, how to select and store it, and sample receipes. The receipes are all very simple without exotic ingredients or special pans, etc. Included are number of calories, and amounts of grams of simple things like fats, vitamins, etc.
Highly entertaining, informative, engaging, eye opening. (don't peel your apples as the peel is where all the antioxidants are).
A wealth of information and all of it to your benefit. Simple and effective presentation.
There are two Appendix':
a) 2,000 calorie meal plan. (On the Kindle, the type is really small but can be read in good light.)
b) a listing of food qualities such as vitamins, nutrients, and phytochemicals, the foods you can find them in, and what are the specific benefits such as may be cancer fighting or may contribute to heart health, etc.
Very highly recommended.

MS Recovery DietReview Date: 2008-09-05
I wish they were more specificReview Date: 2008-06-15
This book is great for that.
I was really hoping for more specific guidelines though, for example.
How to prepare for an ELISA test (if this is possible)
Where to get an ELISA test done.
Start off with X,Y,Z suppliments.
Eliminate one food group at a time.
Common alternatives to common (problem) foods are ...
Staying strong and avoiding temptations (there are a few excellent ideas on this in the book but I felt that they could have been restated towards the end of the book)
I understand that this information IS in the book but I just felt that after reading it I needed more guidance.
Changing your diet is hard enough - when you have such a deeply compelling reason for changing it I feel that one cannot have too much guidance in acheiving it.
Finally an alternative that really works!Review Date: 2008-03-24
I feel extremely lucky to have found this book!Review Date: 2008-03-29
But there were things I didn't know in regards to food & MS. This book explains why diet is important & how different foods effect MS. I also enjoyed reading all the personal case histories of real MS patients who have tried this diet.
I plan on staying on this diet the rest of my life. (I want to do everything possible for me to achieve the best possible outcome, so I also take one of the MS drugs (Avonex) in addition to this diet.)
Also, this book explained more to me about the disease of MS than all the neurologist's I have seen put together. I am deeply grateful to Ann Sawyer & Judith Bachrach for writing this book...Thank You!

What it lacks is detail. Details about why or how the exercises really work. It's just a very general "this works on your hamstrings" without the "this is why the exercise is effective".
Superb training ResourceReview Date: 2008-06-22
Fighter or not TFW provides a broad range of excercises and drills. The book follows a logical path giving an overview of MMA and then gets into Warrior Anatomy covering warm-ups, training by bodypart (don't confuse this with traditional body split training) and then goes on to cover specific programs, nutrition and injuries. You can follwo the programs or mix it up and simply focus on the areas that you need to work.
As for the weight training aspect, I'm a RKC Kettlebell instructor and consequently the Kettlebell is my tool of choice. I simpy us kettlebell drill and lifts to replace the conventional weighted drills.
The most valuable aspect of TFW is the way it translates many conventional drills into a MA context.
Most important, once you've read the text, looked at the pics...Go Train!

Excelling athletes on raw food dietReview Date: 2008-04-17
I would look at the results Tim Van Orden at running [...] is getting. He is beating world elite skyscraping running and endurance athletes after having only been on an e-x-ceptionally minimally raw food diet for 2 years, having only been running for two years and is a late age in running circles of 38. Brendan Brazier also is interesting.
Also, Victoria Boutenko's theory on how greens (organic - as startling difference in her book Green Smoothie between mostly 1,480mg compared to 1 to 8mg of any standard vitamin or mineral per 100g greens) exceed the USDA requirements on almost all counts, the exception being fibre and how this diet does not cause a-n-y of the myriad human illnesses in chimpanzees, who are used to test blood samples in animal testing for human medicine, hearts and lungs etc. and who share 99.4% the same gene sequence as humans.
Rainbow Green Live-Food CuisineReview Date: 2008-05-16
Rainbow Green Live- Food Cuisine introduces the concept of live-food. This plan is strictly vegan and promotes the usage of fresh raw foods whenever possible. For most people, these recipes will be a radical change from what they eat at present. Nonetheless, they will provide a place to start.
I had a few personal challenges while trying these recipes. A large portion of the foods contained coconut, which I am allergic to, so I had to make some adjustments. Moreover, many of the dishes contained ingredients that were unavailable in my area, so I again had to make substitutions.

That being said, this book puts together all the pieces of my physical puzzle. I have found out some of the info contained in this book on my own through doctors who stumbled along and "dabbled" in my different problem areas. But they never connected the dots for me like this book did. It is facinating and brilliant and I think it will help me.

Until I started doing what is recommended in this book, I didn't buy or make sweet things very often. Because if they were in the house, I'd keep going back to them until they were gone. Once I started taking the amino acids I was evidently deficient in, I was able to eat a bit and leave it alone, like a regular person. LOL I can buy a pack of cookies, eat 2 or 3, and leave the rest for the next day. Amazing.
This worked for me.
