Cholesterol Down: Ten Simple Steps to Lower Your Cholesterol in Four Weeks--Without Prescription Drugs
All I can tell you is that this Cholesterol Down eating and exercise plan works! When I decided to get this book, I had already tried to take two different prescription cholesterol medications, but I could not tolerate the side effects. Well, the side effects with this plan turned out to be my total cholesterol going from 234 to 166, triglycerides going from 133 to 89, LDL (bad cholesterol) going from 167 to 69, and HDL (good cholesterol) went from 56 to 80. At the same time, totally unexpected, my diabetes A1c test was PERFECT (5.8) for the first time since I was diagnosed 4 years ago.
The book is well written and easy to understand. She explains what cholesterol is in a way that a lay person can understand. She also explains the science behind choosing the foods she includes in the plan.
The second half of the book includes a daily planner for working these foods into your diet, numerous suggested menus and recipes. I really didn't use her recipes much, although they looked good. I worked the foods into my diet using menus I was already comfortable with. I was already exercising 30 minutes a day and eating a healthy diet, but did not know which foods were best for lowering cholesterol before I read the book.
If you're serious about getting that cholesterol down, this is the book for you.

Too many of us in the US want a "quick fix" to every "problem" that comes our way, whether personal issues or public policy. The plan outlined by the author is just that - a quick fix - - or so the cover leads us to believe. We much prefer to treat symptoms than address the cause of the problem in the first place.
That said, I bought it because (1) I'm educated ( a continuing process ),(2) statistical correlation between elevated cholesterol and adverse health conditions exists, (3)"they" keep lowering the bar re total cholesterol levels, (4) the use of statins can be dangerous, in addition to being costly, and (5) my historical levels of cholesterol exceed currently accepted average guidelines.
Brill's plan had a positive impact on participants cited. It may be doing the same in my case - though I've chosen only 8 or the 10 steps. We'll see. That said, a CT scan of my heart shows zero plaque, and my calculated cardiovascular age is 15 years less than actual. I believe I'm in good health - and intend to stay that way. This is proactive choice on my part. I'm not under a physician's care and even if my cholesterol levels remain the same, I expect to continue most of the steps chosen. I've concluded they make sense.
Brill educates well in the first 42 pages. Whether you choose to adopt any of her suggestions in principle or with a specific objective, the subject matter is important. In truth, the broader issue as it relates to overall health is that of oxidation and free radical generation. LDL levels are indicators, but the culprit in CV disease from what I've read is VLDL and inflammation - - triglyceride levels are a more important focal point than LDL by itself. Neurosurgeon author, Russell L Blaylock, can provide interested readers additional comprehensive knowledge of basic mechanisms of disease and how nutrition impacts the process.
Cholesterol DOWN is worth your time and the few dollars it costs. BUY IT. READ IT. SHARE IT WITH OTHERS. Most importantly, learn to identify and focus on the CAUSE of things you believe to be problems. Quick fixes are a foolish waste of time.

We all know the details about losing weight. If our intelligence had anything to do with it....we would be thin. I feel so disappointed in myself when I have tried to lose weight and failed. Linda Spangle has shown me that is not what I am eating that is the problem. It is my whole attidude towards food in general. Her motivational hints have helped me change my life style. I am not rapidly losing weight, but I feel healthier and in control of my eating. I am losing about a pound a week without officially being on a "diet". I did not feel it was necessary to read the book from the beginning to the end. I have left it by my bedside and read a few pages at night and sometimes I reread the same little section in the morning. Each motivational tidbit is only about two pages long. This book has helped me drop my membership in the "clean plate club". It has also helped me to "savor" a bite or two of the foods I crave instead of gobbling them down. Reading this book has definitely helped elevate my self-esteem. I had originally borrowed this book from the local library. After reading it, I went online and ordered copies for myself and my sister.
I can't wait to see where it takes me

I just started this book three days ago but I am already excited about it. My book had a handwritten note from the author and I also received an email wishing me luck and offering support. Just the personal correspondence is great! I am on day 2 and, at the end of the 100 days, will be back to give a full review.
P.S. I have a blog wherein I chronicle my weight loss struggles as well as my daily life.

I thought this was a very good book, with quick, easy, practical lessons. I found it motivating and insightful. Not every lesson resonated with me and I found some of the examples to be irritating and irrelevant, but I'm only one part of her audience and I'm sure those lessons and examples spoke to someone else. As far as the lessons go, you can do as much or as little as you want with them. Some days, I wrote a lot. Some days I wrote just a few sentences. If I missed a day, I just picked it up the next day. If you can't commit to that, I'm not sure if you're ready to commit to long-term weight loss or maintenance. The most important lessons, I think, are around managing long term weight loss. It really is a rest of your life challenge!

Very insightful read. Biology and nutrition are my favorite topics to read about. This really delivers an interesting perspective that you won't find in other books. Years ago when I homeschooled my kids, I used a curriculum guide with highly unattainable goals. If you followed it precisely, you would need 36-hour days. But, it was great as a resource from which I would pick and choose ideas. I'm using 'The CR Way' much the same way. Other reviewers may see this book as too ambitious, but as experience has taught me, good habits tend to multiply over time. What might appear over-the-top to me today, just might seem logical and doable in the future. As they say: "Never say never."
Still, at the moment, some of the advice in 'The CR Way' isn't practical or desirable for me. Feeling alive and in vibrant health is a core goal of mine. My version of CRON needs to be consistent with that. So I won't be eating a 'tease meal' before breakfast, as these authors suggest. Nor will I be eating most of my calories in the morning and poking myself with a glucometer several times.
These practices would make me feel like a sick person. I just won't go there. At least, not until I need to. And truthfully, one of the reasons I'm attracted to CRON in the first place is a desire to stay away from glucometers, pills, doctors and needles.
I used to be a 'junk food' vegan--lots of pasta, baked goodies, bread, etc. This book, and others in the same vein such as Fuhrman, Hyman, McDougall, etc, are helping me reform my grainiac ways. I love the idea of eating nutrient-dense foods, and can't wait to try out some of the vegetarian recipes in the 'CR Way.' Most, but not all, are plant-based recipes, which pleases me enormously, but the real kicker is this: Many appear easy and time-efficient, a nice departure from the labor-intensive recipes I've been making lately.
These authors have given us the gift of laying out in great detail their CRON lifestyle. I think of it as a case-study based on good science, but is up to interested readers to pull out what seems practical to do in their own lives. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in living well and retaining health through their golden years. The longevity angle: nice, but no guarantee.

I've read all of the Walford books, and frankly, despite the heavy emphasis on science, find them much more informative on the topic of CR.
I also find that Walford presents ideas on how CR can be made eminently liveable...and, frankly, I don't see the CR Way as practiced by these authors as liveable.
They don't eat after 1:00 p.m. They recommend minimal amounts of protein. They recommend minimal amounts of cooking. CR isn't this radical...these authors are.
For those interested in CR, it is pretty basic: Focus on making 50% or more of your food intake veggies, about 20 to 30% beans/grains (unprocessed),the rest fruit. I find the McDougall books much more appropriate for a novice CR practitioner. Or, the books by Joel Fuhrman.
This book is extreme...well, in the extreme.

This book is INCREDIBLE! It is down-to-earth, easy to read and understand and follow. Paul and Meredith's tone of care and concern for HEALTH, LONGEVITY and WELL-BEING really come through in this book. I HIGHLY recommend it. And despite the fact I have practiced CR for many years - I still gained a lot of useful information from this book. A MUST read for everyone that cares enough about themselves and their health - based on research and they practice what they preach!

I started trying a new recipe such as the chilli and it was awful! Most of the recipes were bland or mushy.

This cookbook is GREAT. My husband and I both work full time and have a tendency to not eat healthy when we're so busy. With this cookbook, I prepare the ingredients the night before, then when morning comes I throw them all in the crock and **WHOLAH** a healthy meal upon coming home from work.
It does require forethought, but if you can get yourself into a groove, this cook book is GREAT!

I'm a big time calorie counter and fat counter. I have good eating habits do to the fact that I lost 56 lbs. with Weight Watchers about four years ago. So I'm not a stranger to cooking light. I prefer it. And I love to cook with my slow cooker. I bought the original Fix-It cookbook and LOVE it. And I have to say that although I haven't used this one as often it is filled with an abundance of great recipes and their nutritional facts.
Overall, a great cookbook that I will keep next to my other favorite cookbooks.

I purchased this book after hearing about it for years from different sources. Read it in only three sittings because it was so fascinating. I have incorporated much of the book into my daily life, especially what I eat. Study seems to be irrefutable. Health is largely a result of lifestyle, including dietary habits. I have changed mine. Only negative comment is the book is a little more academic than I would have preferred.

The reader does not do a great job of reading this from the scientific basis - he does not seem to understand the science very much, therefore reads in an unusual manner. Still, the CD's are a nice alternative if you don't have time to read the book.

I wasn't sure about this book when I ordered it. I was having a hard time finding audiobooks on nutrition. So many diets and diet plans but not many on nutrition. When I first started listening to the book I didn't think it was what I was looking for then it grabbed me. Everyone in the world should read or listen to this book. It is a book that could literaly change the world into a better place. We are far to complacent to accept the world "as is". I plan to tell as many people about this book as possible and do my part to change the world one person at a time starting with me.

The pH Miracle knowledge is producing books that should be mandatory reading for all health, fitness and sports professionals; and everybody envisaging the well being of living beings. The concepts unlock the mysteries of fatness to replace the miseries of loss-gain cycles with the joy of being probably healthy for the first time since conception.

A lot of chemistry and I like chemistry. I tried it for about a week (not long enough) and couldn't stick with it. I think the book needs more food lists and repititious on the listings. Tough diet to stick with. I think anyone would lose weight it you ate primarily veggies all the time. Not a bad idea don't get me wrong just not so easy to do.

This is a great book written by a nutritionist who has studied alkalinity and its effects on the human body! If you are someone who is not familiar with the importance of maintaining a healthy acid/alkaline level in your body, this book will explain it all clearly and concisely.
If you want to jump on the alkaline band wagon like I did, there are some great recipes in this book, particularly if you enjoy largely vegetarian fare. For those who don't, there are some excellent, easy recipes with fish and others that could be easily modified to add animal protein.
This book does several things:
1. It explains why maintaining a slight alkalinity improves your health and how to achieve that fairly easily.
2. The author recommends rebounding as a primary mode of exercise and explains why more vigorous exercise can be counter-productive to the weight loss process. There is also a section of detailed instructions of how to begin with rebounding, and a series of starter and advanced exercises on the rebounder. The book recommends Needak rebounders, but Amazon offers many lower-priced alternatives. Rebounding is really fun and it changes your body and improves your health quickly, at least in my experience.
3. Dr. Young shares nutritional supplements that aid the weight loss process and the best time to take them.
This book is a fairly quick read, not overly technical, and you may very well read it cover to cover like I did, and then go back and highlight the areas that strike you as most important at the moment.
In addition to a quick and easy weight loss, this program in combination with Hypnosis has given me flawless skin, tremendously renewed energy, and a program NOT A DIET that's designed as a way of life for ever-improving health.
If you want to lose weight easily, feel better, and look better, this book is for you !

The second edition of this book was one of my college texts in 2004. While I didn't find the accompanying lab. manual as helpful, the actual text is great. Brown describes food science in simple language, explaining the reasons behind why cakes crash, why chemical elements in foods react as they do, why high altitude cooking rules differ, ingredient substitutions, etc., but also provides more in-depth chemical and physical explanations as well. It is really fascinating to read through just for fun. If you enjoy experimenting with recipes as I do, you will really appreciate Brown's guidelines. I refer to my copy a lot; her charts and guidelines are incredibly useful.

My father had surgery for stomach cancer in December 2006. He decided not to have radiation or chemotherapy because his surgeon told him treatment might shorten his life because of his age. My father is 87 years old. I bought him this book. It mentions a flaxseed oil and lowfat cottage cheese mixture that my father eats twice a day, in addition to his regular meals. He went from 149 lbs to 165 lbs. He's doing very well. Thanks for writing this book Ms. Pierce!
6/17/08 My father's cat scan showed no cancer. His doctors are surprised he's doing so well.

I have seen other books about cancer but this book explained the processes without technical jargon. It was easy to follow, easy to read and easy to understand. I bought another 20 copies to give my friends and families for Christmas. I think it is a topic we should all be informed about! I feel empowered for having read it and am not afraid of the word cancer anymore. I now know there are many strategies for getting rid of it. This book is highly recommended.

Ann Louise Gittleman is one of nutrition's superstars. It is impossible to read anything she writes and not learn something that will cause you to change your eating habits for the better. Because of one of her books, I added zinc supplements to my vegetarian diet and immediately felt more energetic. Her new book, The Gut Flush Plan, is no exception to her library of important and useful books.
This book provides a 21-Day Gut Flush Plan, with daily menus, easy recipes, nutritional information, and shopping lists. The program is designed to detoxify your body; fortify your digestive system against pathogens; flush your digestive system of toxins, pathogens, and parasites; and feed you nourishing GI-building foods. The book emphasizes building healthy intestinal flora that may have been damaged by antibiotics, steroids, other medications, dietary habits, or illnesses. It also teaches you why yeast is an issue, gluten should be avoided, dairy (except yogurt and kefir) should be avoided, colon cleansing is helpful, probiotics are important, and fully digesting food is important. The book also reinforces and explains how gluten, fructose, and lactose (milk sugar) increase the growth of harmful bacteria and yeast in the gut. Another reminder for me is that ninety percent of food allergies and sensitivities come from the most common reaction-producing foods: wheat, milk, corn, unfermented soy, and peanuts.
The book's contents are:
Introduction: Food Fright
Part 1: Why You Need the Gut Flush Plan
1. You Can Fight Gut Grief
2. The GI's Good Guys: HCl, Probiotics, and Digestive Enzymes
3. Colon Corruptor #1: Yeast
4. Colon Corruptor #2: Parasites
5. Colon Corruptor #3: Superbugs
6. Colon Corruptor #4: Food Sensitivities
Part 2: How the Gut Flush Plan Works
7. Step 1: Fortify
8. Step 2: Flush
9. Step 3: Feed
Part 3: The 21-Day Gut Flush Plan
10. Getting Ready for the Gut Flush
11. Week One: Focus on Fortifying
12. Week Two: Focus on Flushing
13. Week Three: Focus on Feeding
Part 4: The Gut Flush Plan for Life
14. Gut Flush at Home
15. Gut Flush on the Road
16. Ensuring a Healthy Gut for Life
Appendix: The Gut Flush Recipes
Source Notes, Resources, Index
Whether it's a food you are allergic or sensitive to, yeast overgrowth, parasites, or some superbug, your body is being barraged by some enemy. This book will help you fight off any and all of these offenders and be healthier. Highly recommended! A great companion book is THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams.

As a long time "Fat Flusher" I always look forward to to Ann Louise Gittleman's new books. And Gut Flush is a winner! I really like the healthy, nutritious food in this plan. The recipes are easy and delicious! I have not missed NOT having foods with gluten as there are many OTHER delicious non gluten grains I can eat like quinoa, rice, millet and buckwheat. In fact by eliminating gluten and dairy my constant sinus congestion is GONE!
I highly recommend doing the stool test that Ann Louise recommends as it is a comprehensive test that will help you target exactly what colon corruptor track you will need to follow. Finding out that I have a yeast problem has helped me understand some of my symptoms like bloating, itchy skin, and sinus congestion. By following the protocols I have eliminated these problems altogether!
For those of you looking to 'get healthy' this is the program for you! Just by following the colon corruptor track that you have chosen you can eliminate yeast, parasites, super bugs and tame your food allergies!

Ann Louis Gittleman's new book, 'Gut Flush Plan', is just what I needed to boost my health the next step. After almost 25 years with a chronic illness, a friend recommended her 'Fat Flush Plan' when I was unable to lose weight. That was over 3 years ago; I lost 70 pounds and have kept it off for 2 years. The Gut Flush Plan takes metabolic fitness to the next level for me, concentrating on the yeast connection and colon cleansing seems for me the key to building up a healthy intestinal flora damaged by years of repeated antibiotics, steroids, and other complications of chronic illness. I am looking forward to losing the next 70 pounds and moving forward with my life in a healthy way. The best thing about the author's books is that each is packed full of the latest information to help with not just the help to resolve problems, but also the keys to understanding what can build and maintain a healthy gut for life.
What a change!
