I was looking for a healthy cookbook with quick and easy recipes and I stumbled upon this one. It is excellent!! She includes a lot of easy to understand information and tips in the beginning of the book. The recipes are super easy and don't taste like you're eating diet or health food. Specifically, "The Gazpacho Monterey" and "Spicy Potato Tacos" are delicious. I've even tried a few seafood recipes, and really liked the "Oven-Baked Catfish". I also tried the "Roasted Basil-Pork Medallions with Red Grapes" and was impressed. I never really thought of pork as healthy, but all the meat recipes in the book use the leanest cuts of meat and aren't prepared in heavy, fatty sauces. As for my favorite chapter, dessert, I found the "Triple Raspberry Brownies" are great anytime when I want to indulge. And I recently made the "Berries with Champagne Sabayon" for company and everyone was impressed. Great book overall!!

I completed my set of Sandra Lee books and this one was a surprise. I adore the recipes and tired of the chefs adding tons of butter and sour cream-this one is a relief.
My cancer nurse recommended this one to me & glad she did. Chemo exhausts me & I am able to shop for these easy recipes with the recipe cards & then the photos inspire me to eat.

I love this cookbook! I love Sandra Lee and her show, Semi-Homemade Cooking. I tape her show daily and I have a few of her other cookbooks. I love the idea of light recipes. I am trying to eat great food, but still enoy great flavor. Many cookbooks have "light" or "diet" recipes that include tons of ingredients, take hours to make/prepare, or have really expensive ingredients. Not to mention they often taste gross! This book has lots of ideas for great tasting food that is not going to kill your budget or your schedule. The recipes are practical and easy. I have tried a few of the recipes and I really enjoyed them. My husband didn't even realize he was eating "light" food. I had some friends over and made a few of the recipes and they all asked for the recipes afterward. My favorites include the mango and black bean salsa, sweet potato fries, the pizza recipes, and pears with almond and chantilly cream. I have to admit though, being a huge dessert person, I wish there were a few more light dessert recipes that didn't include liquor.

I bought the Kindle edition of this book. I'm glad I did, since I always have my Kindle with me. Now when visiting friends and family and I mention that they should use one of the included foods of this book I can back up my assertions.
I used this book for no other reason that to improve my diet, which is pretty good but every bit counts. I even tried a few of the recipes and they came out great.
This is a terrific buy. Easy to read and understand. Well done!

This book is a dietary cornacopia of natural food information.Discussed are 101 major organic foods from almonds to yogurt, from soup to nuts, alpha to omega. At first,i assumed it was another cookbook on natural foods and processed foodstuffs added. It has some one hundred plus all natural recipes ,that are of optimal healthy choices and tasty sounding too.A fair amount of wise information on each food object. Each one has a historical note and the root meaning about it.Food lore and place of origin are discussed. What vitamins and their beneficial elements are provided . Also what aliments the foods can aid, prevent and remedy for you.Suggestional tips on selecting, storing, preparing and serving them. What i like most about the book,is that it's an excellent source of nutritional real food information, often overshadowed in our modern reprocessed consumer culture.

Finally a book that makes sense of all of the information out there about nutrition. This book was easy to reference, and best of all a common sense approach to foods we eat every day, that wasnt dry, too technical or too basic. As a nurse I recommend it as a practical way to utilize common sense nutrition. I would definitely recommend this anyone who has had to fish through the other volumes of nonsense that are out there.

I loved it. I'm ready to ask David to come over to my house and clean out my fridge! We actually followed the 2000 calorie plan to see how we felt.
OH my Gosh! So much food! I couldn't eat it all. And, even with 2000 calories, I lost 2 pounds.
Awesome!
I bought my copy 2 weeks ago when the library said the waiting list was too long. It's already got food stains on it.
Kudos to you, David Grotto.

The book is a common sense approach to the physical and emotional clutter in your life. Peter doesn't give you "3 easy steps" or "17 ways to fixing things" but rather knowledge that we all have already and for some reason choose not to focus in the right direction. i never associated clutter with weight gain before and it has some merits :)

Just the idea of PLANNING what you are going to eat instantly rids you of bad choices resulting in loss of weight and increase in self-esteem.

Peter Walsh has produced another great How To book, this time drawing a connection between the clutter around us and the clutter ON us. What he has to say makes great sense to me--enough so that I'm quitting dieting, getting rid of my clutter and letting my efforts just spill over into helping me achieve my weight loss goals.
Worth it if you're ready to make a change.

I bought this book along with his other one "It's All too Much!". I suggest reading the first book, then this one because it sets the ground work and you'll get an understanding of where he's going. It was so freeing to get rid of stuff in my cupboard that "maybe I'll make someday". I had pudding in there that was 10 years old. I then made menus, and did grocery shopping. I made what I shopped for, and with the exception of buying fruit /veggies and sandwiches one night, we had enough for a week and a half! This is because in the book he tells you not to bring in anymore stuff until you finish what you have, or use it to plan the next week's menus. This is a great way to save money and be more thoughtful about what you're making. I've only had the book for a month, so whether I'll lose anything remains to be seen. I have dieted since high school. I know tons about nutrition, portion sizes, fat, calories, exercise, etc. This book is not going to give you the latest and greatest fad. It is about getting to the bottom of what's in our kitchens and clearing our heads to focus on what we all know about healthy diets and nutrition.

This book was very informative in the health aspect. Ann Wigmoore made the medicinal qualities of wheatgrass very easy to follow, but the actually growing process was very brief. I was looking to start growing wheatgrass in my kitchen. I started small batches here and there. I ran in to different problem's with all of them. The book was very brief in the sense that it did not touch on problem solving. There is a number in the back of the book you can call of you run into problems growing. Well I called twice in a matter of two week's, and did not recieve a call back. Overall this book is very useful if your just looking to learn the health benifit's of wheatgrass, but buy a more informative book if you are interested in growing it yourself. A process you should consider. It is inexpensive, and so important to one's health.

I had read several accounts of Ann Wigmore's life changing experience with wheatgrass and other fresh fruits, so I decided to give it a try. With my first wheatgrass kit, I got this book. I was so impressed, that I gave it to a friend of my girlfriend, who was dying from cancer along with a tray of wheatgrass and my old hand juicer. A year later, she's still around and I'm buying myself another copy of Ann's book.

It took three years for the haunting images to dissipate enough for me to start eating meat. But I will never forget what I read. I recently started a blog concerning factory farms among other corporate badness: [...].
Just what American Needs

Just what kind of a diet does a new America need? According to John Robbins author of Diet for a New America, it is a vegetarian diet. In his book, which is slightly outdated having been published in 1987, he explains the lives of animals in factory farms, and as they spend their last moments moving down through the production line. The book is divided into three sections, which allows for an easy to read flow. In addition the book is complete with information regarding animal husbandry in today's society, how to maintain a healthy vegetarian diet, and the future of the environment. All of these come together to make a wonderful book, which you want to keep reading.
The only downfall to the book is the amount of time that has passed since it was originally published. An updated version would be wonderful and great to look back to see if anything has really changed since Robbins first wrote Diet for a New America. Yet, with Robbins clear passion for the subject he is educating and the way that he writes really makes the book is worth reading. The book is really an eye opener for those that don't know much about the treatment of animals and should be read by every meat eater in America.

This is probably the most important book I have ever read. The day I finished reading this book, I vowed never to eat animal products again. That was 16 years ago. I have been a vegan ever since. The reasons for becoming a vegan that are outlined in this book have only become more compelling in the intervening years. Though some of the statistics and research may now be a bit dated, for the most part, the newest research continues to support the basic premise of this book. When you choose a more compassionate diet, you improve your health, the health of the planet, and the condition of animals.

If I could somehow require the hundreds of millions of meat-mongering peoples of the economic `first world' to familiarize themselves with but three current author/advocates, two of them would be John Robbins and Howard F. Lyman (I not sure who the third would be). These are admirable people, more capable than most of stepping back and discerning a society of deluded and naked emperors. Robbins' book is twenty years old now, and still ignored by the burgeoning culture of naked emperors, which includes, perhaps, you?
Bologna, any way you slice it:
"There are powerful interests today who are . . . particularly interested in `protecting' young children from the truth. Children aren't as quick to rationalize and numb themselves as adults are. . . The National Livestock and Meat Board makes it a point to `reach the children of the land at an early age,' and `prepare them for a lifetime of meat-eating.' As they put it in their 1974-1975 Report: `The 37 million elementary and 15 million high school students in the United States constitute a special Meat Board audience.'" pgs 125, 126
"Many of us believe our social status depends on the quality of our meat and the frequency with which we eat it . . . Our cultural conditioning tells us we must eat meat, and at the same time systematically overlooks the basic realities of meat production. We've been indoctrinated so thoroughly that it has become the ocean in which we swim. Our language is so disempowered by euphemisms and clichés, our shared experience so weakened by repression, our common sense so distorted by ignorance, that we can easily be held prisoner by a point of view beneath the threshold of our awareness." pg135
All things connected:
"The world's cattle alone, not to mention pigs and chickens, consume a quantity of food equal to the caloric needs of 8.7 billion people--nearly double the entire human population of the planet." These statistics are more than twenty years old, of course, but the level of waste has greatly grown. "According to Department of Agriculture statistics, one acre of land can grow 20,000 pounds of potatoes. That same acre of land, if used to grow cattle feed, can produce 165 pounds of beef." pg 353
Robbins seems a bit reckless with his statistical references, and this is the book's greatest weakness. Even so, in principle the picture he paints is generally true and real. The animal-based diet is an ecological train-wreck; it's an economic crime; it's killing people and it's raping the biosphere. Meat is a lie that too many people love being told. Read this book and Howard Lyman's. Lyman's `Mad Cowboy' is more powerfully argued, and a better book in my humble opinion; but John Robbins' book is quite good too--although dated now.

This is a wonderful book. It was recommended to me by my nutritionist (shout out to Ginger!) and it has been so enlightening in many ways. It touches on many things I already knew about eating but has much much more that is new for me. Most important for me is it's simple yet in-depth approach and guidelines for looking at and understanding my relationship and irrational good versus bad moral judgments about foods. I initially rejected that I had a moral viewpoint about food until I opened my mind and read, thought about, and reread this book. I particularly like this book as it can be picked up and put down and then returned to. It isn't necessary to read it cover to cover. In fact that was not working for me at all. I needed to read and reflect to be really receptive to all the author was saying and then I could apply it to me and my life. This is one of those books that will always be part of my life's little reference library - a TOP 10. Am I a normal eater? Not yet. However I am moving there and most importantly I believe I can be a normal eater and now I know normal eating when I see it. The author makes no promises that it is easy or that one will become a normal eater or when that will happen. However a lot of help and direction and hope is provided in this easy to read and easy to understand book.
This book gets to the heart of why we overeat.

Anyone who has struggled with a weight problem can tell you-it's not about diet and excercise!!Most of us (I definitely include myself here) have been on more diets than we care to think about and understanding how to combine(or eliminate) our carbs and proteins, track our points, read our labels etc.is not the issue. The issue is WHY do we eat when we aren't hungry and WHY do we keep eating when we are satisfied???
This book has helped me to start really exploring these questions- I am highlighting constantly- the insights I am gaining are simply profound. I recommend this book 100% to anyone who struggles with their weight. It's helping me to recognize the beliefs behind my behaviors and offering hope of true change.

I have read quite a few books covering intuitive eating and non-dieting issues but find Karen Koenig's book one of the most helpful books I have read. She is very realistic and never claims that there is a quick fix. Everything is explained very well and makes a lot of sense. I am reading it for the second time now, writing in my journal about it and highlighting parts that really 'speak' to me. I feel understood and it gives me hope that I can become a normal eater.

I found this book to be extremely helpful in the process of overcoming a long term eating disorder. Having been both anorexic and overweight, this book has offered me hope in teaching me to read my bodie's clues and to begin to trust them. I appreciate that while the author is honest in saying that becoming a normal eater requires hard work, she also impart's hope to both those who have totally learned to ignore their body's clues that they are full and those who have have learned to ignore physcial hunger and have lived under the tyranny of food diaries and counting calories and fat grams.
Koenig goes beyond the simple rules of intuitive eating into the heart of the issue

This book is an excellent read for those dealing with emotional eating. I'm not finished with this book. Yet, every time I read it, I learn something new. Her voice is compassionate and assertive. And, she explores the emotional issues that drive us to eat rather than feel. Plus, Koenig doesn't overwhelm the reader with a lot of psycho-babble. She's firmly rooted in cognitive-behavioral therapy, which empowers emotional eaters to deal with their issues head on.
Koenig also states that, like alcoholism, emotional eaters will never be cured, but will be a work in progress. It taught me to stop, think, and listen to my heart and body. I highly recommend it!

This book is extremely helpful for children with ADHD. It gives practical and fast working advice that is right on the money. It is a great place to start when looking for an alternative to drug therapy. I highly recommend this be the first book you read when you are learning about ADHD - it may be the only one you need. Thank you to Dr. Bob for all your research and clinical expertise that went into writing this book and for all the children you have saved!

When I first saw this book I thought... "18 days? Yeah, right." But I thought I didn't have anything to lose but a few dollars so I got it. We had tried all kinds of diets, vitamins, meds. Things would get better but not be entirely "back to normal".
I read through Dr. Bob's book, took notes, implemented some of the thoughts... I read the entry of one of the readers below that talked about the parasites and wondered if perhaps that was it for us too.
We had an appointment and saw a doctor. Parasites it was. Five days on a course of black walnut tincture and my daughter was a new child. She lost her diagnosis of ADHD the next doctor appointment we had. The teachers could not believe the difference. We are still in awe.
Thank you Dr. Bob. Without you and your book, my daughter would still be on Concerta. And the health of our family would never have been improved from your other recommendations.
For this and so much more, Dr. Bob:
THANK YOU !!!
PS We also HIGHLY recommend the daily devotional Dr. Bob has written. I don't have a friend who hasn't bought it after hearing some of the topics discussed in it - turning grey hair back, the hazards of peanut butter, better sleep, back pain solutions, bringing liver enzymes back to normal, migraines, and the list goes on and on with advice we had never ever heard before and my friends and I read A LOT of health books !!!

Dr. Bob in his book is another one of those writers about ADHD who believes (sincerely) that supplements, food, good parenting, and so on is the correct answer for treatment of all types of ADHD/ADD. While certainly, the above would help almost any type of disorder, he never bothers to mention at ANY time when his idea did not work, (ie the vitamins failed to solve the child's problems)--so am I believe it is 100% successful?!! Amazing. My question for Dr. Bob is if pharmaceuticals do not work, then why can I name so many success stories from people who DO USE them. Oh, by the way, they do not work all the time. He is a convincing, good writer, he is just totally wrong. Also, he forgets that we now are seeing adults in their 40s still having the symptoms of ADD, who by the way had them first diagnosed in the 1-3rd grades. I would recommend his book, because it is well written and organized. And, all children do NOT need to take medications to modify their behavior. I do think our society at time has gone overboard with that notion. But his book is not the cure all with his omega oils and patented products he so often wants you to use. He has some very good ideas, and I took this into account. He says sugar impairs you immune system, which is abosolutely false, and has some other non sense he tries to pass on with questionable science to back it up. To me it appears as another one of those who believes you should avoid ALL medications at ALL costs no matter what. Also, how many cases a day does he "treat" for ADHD, and how does he deal with adults who have had it for so long. Does he, while flexing soft tissue as a chiropractor, take time out to express his feeling while giving a massage? ADHD/ADD is a long complex condition-- that foods and vitamins cannot "fix" so easily as this half life of 18 days he speaks about. It often involves moral and personal issues at home, that by avoiding sugar is just not going to cover. guyairey

My 5 year old son was recently diagnosed with ADHD. So, when I first saw the title of this book I thought it was a joke and I was hestitant about ordering it. But to my surprise it is a great book! The book does a great job of explaining (in plain english) what ADHD is, how to begin to heal the body and how important a sugar/ dairy/ gluten free diet is.
Upon his suggestion, I immediately, but graduately, changed my son's diet and found an hollistic doctor which we are currently working with. I have seen a change in his hyperactivity since removing the sugar and the fast food and he is even doing much better in school.
This book is an easy read, I read it in four days! I recommend this book to all parents!

My 3 year old son had been out of control for a long time. He had many symptoms of ODD. He had a short fuse and got angry easily. He always whined and wouldn't sleep through the night. Both my husband and I were at a breaking point, but knew we did NOT want to go the medication route. I always thought our family ate pretty healthy; we would limited our kids sugar/snack intake and we weren't a milk drinking family so I didn't think that my son's 'attitude' symptoms were food/mineral deficiant related. Boy, were we wrong!
While reading Dr. Bob's book I compared my son's 'symptoms' to those in the book. Dr. Bob's book has been a lifesaver! We noticed a difference in only 5 days!
We started w/ the nigtly salmon oil, added flax, changed to soy and rice milk and we are beginning to add vitamins and whole food minerals. We even started the program for all 3 my children.
This book has added a bright future for our children and has given my husband and I the peace in knowing we are actually getting to the root of the problam instead of just medicating the problem. Thanks Dr. Bob.

The recipes in this book are wonderful, but the only reason I give this four stars instead of five is because the recipes take a fair amount of time and work to prepare. If you have the time the results are worth it. However, I think the longer I work with the cookbook I'll be able to figure out shortcuts to make the recipies more realistic for weeknight preparation.

I found the main dishes in this book to be primarily good, although some require a multitude of ingredients that are not normally on hand. Every baked good I tried was awful! The biscotti was so hard I could not even bite into it! The bundt cake was soggy and heavy. I was disappointed and understand why used copies are $4.00!

There are good descriptions if you want to leave out or swap ingredients, good tips along with the recipes that lead to terrific results. I have seriously impressed my meat-loving husband with the recipes from this book. And they don't taste low fat at all. Love this cookbook. Wish I heard about it years before.

The recipes in "Low-Fat Favorites" aren't time-consuming to prepare like the classic Moosewood recipes, making them more weeknight friendly. There are many "tricks" to make a dish seem creamy or cheesy without adding any cream or cheese -- all satisfaction, no fat!
I made Roasted Vegetables Caribbean Style for a potluck the other night to rave reviews. It was easy to prepare and SO good (page 227).
The "Menu Suggestions" feature and the indication of time the recipe takes to prepare are great for planning family dinners or dinner parties, and are included with each recipe.

I'm reading an aweful lot of whining and moaning about this book, and most of it is summed up by "I want to eat what I want to eat and still lose weight, but this book won't let me", Or "it's too hard!" (insert your favorite petulant child picture here).
Another thing that boggles my mind is when people comment on how to change these recipes yet they do so in ways that completely destroy the principles behind The Zone. It is painfully obvious that they have never read any of The Zone books other than this one yet they think they are being so very clever in their suggestions.
Here's the deal, Dr. Sears is dead-on about his biochemistry. Period. He's forgotten more about human metabolism than any food critic will ever know. If you make this lifestyle change, you will lose weight. The end.
If it feels wrong to you, or you don't like the recipes as much as the food you were eating before, then there's probably a very good reason for that; if you are obese, then you're not going to like eating this way initially because what you like eating is what got you into your predicament in the first place.
But then again you may enjoy the thrills of diabetes or degenerative joints or myocardial infarctions; and I'm sure your spouse loves the melodious chainsaw snoring at nite from your obstructive sleep apnea.
I lost twenty six pounds over five months and never excercised more than what it took me to flip the channels on the remote. On top of that, I only followed it during the week and gave myself the weekends off to eat whatever. As far as the preparation time; I work eighty to ninety hours a week (I graduate med school this year), so don't complain to me about how cooking these meals takes too much time; your whining will fall on deaf and pitiless ears.
The point is simple, if you want to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle, follow the principles in this book; if you just want to whine alot and eat whatever the hell you want to, and then complain that you're not losing weight, don't bother with the book.

The Zone is a great diet if you have good recipes (not many in here) and if it has the proportions that you need for your personal meal. I've gotten a few good ones out of "What to Eat in the Zone". There are two different weekly menus - for women and for men. Not so in this book. It is based entirely on men. If you are a woman, you have to figure it out for yourself how much to cut down on the ingredients. Some things are obvious - if it calls for 4 oz of meat, you go to 3 oz. But the rest of the recipe is too difficult to figure out. Some people say the Zone is complicated enough as it is, and this book doesn't make a case against that, unless, of course, you are a man.
Also, the desserts are usually figured for 4 to 8 servings. If you're the only one in the house on the diet, too bad. These aren't things that freeze or store well either.
I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this book, as I'd be disappointed.

This book was good in that I could skim through 3 short chapters and understand the Zone concept completely. It's really all I needed to know to get going. Also, the quick list of food blocks in the back was great. However, the recipes are gross. I have never seen so much cabbage in a cookbook. Just gross. The Formula has better recipes.

Sears wants you to think he has come up with a complicated system which he calls The Zone.
In reality, all you need is to eat naturally, like our ancestors did thousands of years ago. Eat greens, vegetables, berries, fruit, mushrooms, nuts. Eat lean meat (our ancestors hunted for healthy, lean animals). Eat egg whites, but avoid yolks. Most of the modern contaminants stick to fat molecules, and yolks are mostly fat. Plus it's the wrong type of fat, as chickens are not fed properly. Eat wild fish (but not too often; don't forget about pollutants).
That's it. Forget grains (and everything made from them). Forget potatoes and hard beans, soda and juices. Forget vegetable oils. All that junk is completely unnatural for humans to eat; our ancestors couldn't imagine that was edible. And that's why we have diseases that they didn't have.
Forget milk. Milk is only good for babies under 3 years old. Studies show that milk (and even yogurt) causes hyperinsulinemia (insulin "spikes" that lead to diabetes etc.) in adults.
Yes, his advice to take fish oil is great. Farm-raised animals are fed with junk food; consequently, they lack certain fatty acids that are vital for our health. Fish oil is a convenient way of restoring the balance. But Sears' fish oil is not the purest and cheapest on the market.
I'm a physiologist, and I've helped a number of people to change their eating habits. Those people have gotten rid of many problems, like obesity, allergies, asthma, arthritis, and excessive fatigue. And they don't complain that the food is not delicious enough. They learned to use their imagination a little bit and combine various healthy foods to create their nice and simple "recipes", and realized they enjoy their food even more than before.
