This book is a must-have not only for those preparing to join the Navy SEALs but anyone considering joining the Special Operations community in general. It gives detailed safe routines to get you from sedentary to fit and prepared for the rigors of BUD/S or any other indoc program. It also contains information on stretches, and lots of practical information from the SEAL application process through what to expect at each step of BUD/S.

I've read over this book and I love it. Unlike other Navy Seals book, it doesn't insult you. It encourages you to try out new stuff and to keep doing them. I personally love the section about swimming. I've been swimming sidestroke and freestyle for quite a while in preparations for my 5k run-swim-run this summer. I also plan to do a 13.1 miles run while will help out greatly. I really want to try the rope climbing exercise. However, I'm having trouble locating a rope to climb. I saw some ropes at Little Creek but I don't know if people can just use them whenever.

Overall, the book is very neat. It shows you pictures and instructions on how to do the proper sets. The book even has a "plan" in the back. It goes over everything from stretches, pushups, pull ups, swimming, running, and rope climbing. It's all very clear and very good.

I personally don't know if this book will prepare you for actual training for special operations. I do know that they are fun to do and the author is fairly nice about it. He doesn't insult you and he goes about to encourage you by knowing that not everyone who reads the book will be "SEAL material."

Another book I recommend is U.S. Navy SEAL Guide to Fitness and Nutrition by U.S. Navy. It's very informative and it breaks into two sections: fitness and nutritional advice.

This is perhaps the finest workout manual ever produced. I always have liked the idea of using callesthenics to get in shape beacause not only is it a little safer than weightlifting, but it can be done anywhere with no expensive gym membership or equipment. Before I would use the CJ CArracci dvd's, which dont get me wrong are an excellent workout too. But this is so much more complete. He breaks it down to 12 weekly workouts, that are different everyday and change weekly, progressively getting harder while switching things up to keep the workout fresh. There's swimming, running workouts, military callesthenics, and so much more. I have never been in this good of shape before. I can swim over a mile a day, jog for 5-6 miles at a time, and do pushups all day! Factor in that this book comes with a dvd to demo the excercises all for 13 bucks, and you will have the greatest tool in any workout arsenal.

This book was very informative in the health aspect. Ann Wigmoore made the medicinal qualities of wheatgrass very easy to follow, but the actually growing process was very brief. I was looking to start growing wheatgrass in my kitchen. I started small batches here and there. I ran in to different problem's with all of them. The book was very brief in the sense that it did not touch on problem solving. There is a number in the back of the book you can call of you run into problems growing. Well I called twice in a matter of two week's, and did not recieve a call back. Overall this book is very useful if your just looking to learn the health benifit's of wheatgrass, but buy a more informative book if you are interested in growing it yourself. A process you should consider. It is inexpensive, and so important to one's health.

I had read several accounts of Ann Wigmore's life changing experience with wheatgrass and other fresh fruits, so I decided to give it a try. With my first wheatgrass kit, I got this book. I was so impressed, that I gave it to a friend of my girlfriend, who was dying from cancer along with a tray of wheatgrass and my old hand juicer. A year later, she's still around and I'm buying myself another copy of Ann's book.

Dr. Agatston's explanation of the heart and heart disease is written in layman's terms so everyone will have an easy time to understand the "ins" and "outs" of heart disease. After reading this book, you will want to change your life style and ask your doctor for these life saving tests. I would highly recommend this book especially if you have a family history of heart disease and stroke.

Positives: delicious, nutritious food. Never felt hungry through a year of using the recipes and menus. That was five years ago and 50 pounds ago. The 50 have stayed off because I/we still eat the same way, and always will. Negatives: preparation of many recipes takes a LOT of time and access to a few ingredients that are hard to find in a small town grocery store. This would be a TERRIFIC diet if only one had someone to prepare all this food for you. Still the best diet out there; it works and it changes the way you will eat and think about food for the rest of your life.

I HAVE NOT READ THROUGH THE ENTIRE BOOK YET, BUT HAVE MOST, IF NOT ALL, DR. AGASTON'S BOOKS ON SOUTH BEACH DIET & HAVE STUDIED NUTRITION OVER THE YEARS (ALOT) IT'S GREAT INFORMATION & IT SEEMS THE ONLY WAY TO DIET IS THROUGH NORMAL EATING WITH GOOD CARBS & LOW GI FOODS ADDING LOW FAT DAIRY (OR NONFAT) PLUS FRUITS, VEGGIES & WHOLE GRAINS PLUS SMALL AMOUNTS OF NUTS, SEEDS & LEGUMES. SO I AGREE WITH IT - NOW IF I COULD ONLY STICK TO IT FULL-TIME! I THINK IT'S ON TARGET INFORMATION & WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. THANKS - STILL TRYING TO 'REVERSE'.

I've been on this program for almost 11 months now and I've never felt better. My weight also, hasn't been this low since 2002! I have lost about 18 pounds and this is huge for a middle aged woman! I've tried every diet plan out there from Atkins to Weight Watchers with no success. When I started eating for my GenoType, the weight started coming off, and I am very pleased with the program. Dr. D'Adamo is a pioneer in blood and genetics. I will eat this way for the rest of my life! Thank you Dr. D'Adamo for your research and my health (I am also one of his patients)!

Needs a 2nd Edition.

I'd suggest a 2nd edition of this book or even a new book called Lived Right 4 Your Genotype. There was a good deal of confusion early on among Blood Type dieters on the community boards (including myself) who didn't realize this diet is fundamentally different then the Blood Type diet.

Dr. D'Adamo has clarified a lot of this on his website, dadamo.com, and the 2nd edition could begin with the explanation that Blood Type Diet is targeted at people struggling with illness and Genotype diet looks at other genetic factors to create a diet for longevity. There is a calculator on D'Adamo's website that helps determine which diet to follow.

With that clarification out of the way, the theoretical contents of the 1st edition, which explains the emerging scientific knowledge of genetics and epigenetics, could be introduced and the 6 genotypes explained. The measurements and the basic and intermediate calculators for Genotype are introduced.

The Advanced Calculator as well as some of the helpful recipes and meal plans would be contained on a CD-ROM since, as Dr. D'Adamo claims, computer programs are more effective at customizing the large quantity of nutritional information for an individual.

Now, the food lists could also be fine-tuned to emulate the helpful refinements of Blood Type lists in Live Right 4 Your Type. This means focusing firstly on the postitive by listing Superfoods and Neutral foods, and secondly a tiered system of Avoid Foods, providing additional guidance on the most harmful foods and food additives.

Another new section would help explain Dr. D'Adamo's selection process for foods in more detail than what was revealed in the 1st edition.

These revisions could make The Genotype Diet a far more accessible book with the potential for a long-lasting impact on people's diets, much like Eat Right 4 Your Type, which as already outlived scathing attacks as "a fad diet," and outlasted ignorant attacks of having "no scientific validity." Until this 2nd edition emerges, almost all this information is available for free on dadamo.com.

Dr. D'Adamo's Eat Right 4 Your Type identified foods for my blood type that make me feel better. Eat Right 4 Your Type was a revolutionary work. The GenoType Diet is an evolution of Eat Right 4 Your Type that integrates genetic identity with nutrition, and creates individualized diets. He separates us into six separate genetic types - Hunter, Gatherer, Teacher, Explorer, Warrior, and Nomad - and describes how to figure out which type we each fall into. Then he prescribes what foods to emphasize and what we should avoid for our type. The book reveals how diet and lifestyle affect gene expression and how we can influence the turning on and off of certain genes so as to positively impact health, weight, and longevity. His writing style is lively and enjoyable. This book is innovative and interesting, and I especially appreciate its emphasis on how our eating and lifestyle changes can positively impact our bodies all the way down to the level of gene expression. Good accompany books are Eat Right 4 Your Type and THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams

Too Restrictive with No Reasons Given "Toxic" Fruits and Vegetables

I gave this diet one star, because I feel that "What is your Genotype" would probably be a great conversation opening line for a single person in the dating scene. Kind of a new variation of "What's your (Astrological) Sign?". When the person responds .. "Gee, I don't know what my genotype is" the single person says, "Give me your hand so I can take a closer look" .. YES! This is good for the dating scene. ;)

However, as far as a diet that I would follow? No, I cannot recommend this diet. The Genotype Diet eliminates too many whole foods with no explanation as to why.

This book has no cites, no references to any scientific studies or statistics. Instead, D'Adamo takes you through his very general explanation of genetics and diet, and says that he "developed the concept of the genotype" through his own statistical analysis of genetic traits and diseases associated with them. Through this analysis, he came up with 6 genotypes. When he said this, I'm asking, why 6? How did the analysis show this? I'm very interested in reading about how he did this.

and this is when I read "the reader who wishes to learn more about the scientific rationale (well, D'Adamo's scientific rationale) behind the diet is invited to visit www.genotypediet.com to learn more". What? So, I go there, thinking that he has on this website something about the studies that he used in his analysis, and how he did his analysis.. and I find a pay diet site. If you pay, you can see how D'Adamo used the research of others to create his diet.

uhhh.. no thanks.

but.. I read on through, and take a look at the descriptions of the different types. I went ahead and did the measurements, and found out I'm a GT2-gatherer... I think.. because some of the measuring instructions weren't that clear, and an inch or 2 can make a difference when you are evenly proportioned (torso to legs, upper leg to lower leg).

Some of the characteristics of the GT2-gatherer were right on, some not so much. But then, this can also be said of my astrological sign. some characteristics fit, some don't.

So, on to the food lists for GT2-Gatherer. I see that for poultry, my "superfoods" with a diamond- those that will help me maintain normal weight are emu, ostrich, and turkey. which.. for me means turkey. Not a lot of Emu and Ostrich in the local grocery stores. Chicken is a "toxic" food with a black dot.. which I can add back to my diet after 6 months if I regain "balance" - a very loosey-goosey goal.

Sesame oil is listed as a toxin. Now this is interesting, because in the last few months, my blood pressure has gone up. I did not want to go on medicine, so I did a little research of my own, and found some studies on PubMed where sesame oil was shown to lower blood pressure. I knew a person that tried it with a person she was taking care of, and saw his pressure drop within hours. So, I switched to sesame oil for my salad dressing and within a month, my pressure was back to normal. So, Sesame Oil is supposed to be toxic for me? I don't think so.

Then I saw the vegetables list. Oh my. These vegetables are listed as toxic for GT2-Gatherer:
avocado, beet, bok choy, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, cucumber, eggplant, grape leaves, kale, leeks, shitake mushrooms, olives, parsnip, radish, rhubarb. sea vegetables, squash, sweet potato, watercress. !!!

these fruits are listed as toxic for the GT2-Gatherer:
apple, asian pear, banana, bitter melon, blackberry, blueberry, cantalope, cherry, coconut, date, grape, kiwi, kumquat, orange, pear, plum, pomegranate, star fruit, strawberry, tangerine..

Not only are these fruits and vegetables listed as TOXIC - NO REASONS are given as to why each item is considered toxic. I guess you are just supposed to take D'Adamo's word for it?

All of these fruits and vegetables have phyto-nutrients, some shown to prevent cancer and other diseases.. why in the world would anyone just drop these from their diet because some doctor decided it was not good for a genotype that he invented? Why do this without some proof that these fruits and vegetables are bad for me? It is at this point, I definitely am not going to try this diet.. not even for the heck of it. It is just too restrictive with no good reason.

I won't go into the other categories (this review is long enough)..

After the food lists.. D'Adamo goes into the supplements recommended for the diet. He states that these supplements will improve your results while on the Gatherer diet (I bet you will NEED supplements on the gatherer diet, after seeing how many foods are "toxic"). He then follows this with: "for more detailed information on the science behind the use of this supplement protocol, visit the genotype diet website"- where you can only see the information if you pay. However, D'Adamo does list some supplements.. with some general reasons why he thinks they would be good for the gatherer type. And there are a couple that I have not heard of and plan to look into. Then he has some general exercise recommendations - yes, I think we can all agree, exercise is good.

There is an appendix with a suggested reading list, which lists some books in the area of genetics. and he lists his websites for information. I got excited when I saw "www.epigenicresearch.com", but when I looked, it turned out to be what looks like a site for products for Naturopathic practitioners. It has a catalog with a one page introduction, followed by a list of products. The materials are only accessible to "members" (I guess this must be other practitioners). but.. in the links, it did have one link that I found interesting.. a link to an open-source project for creating statistical analysis and graphs called the "R-Project". now, that was interesting. so.. at least I got something out of this whole venture. :)

and yes, there is the free one week trial to the genotype diet website, ... free, provided you give them your credit card number. NO THANKS.

bottom line, I would not recommend the Genotype Diet.

I was very impressed by the uncheese dips in this book that I have made so far. I have been vegan for the last five years and the one food that I miss from my pre-vegan days is cheese. This cookbook is a great way to make tangy cheese-inspired dips that are flavorful, but not loaded with fat, the way cheese made from dairy is. So far I have made the Chick Cheez, Gee Wiz spread and the Red wine cheese spread (forgot the exact name). The Chick Cheez came closest to the dairy cheese taste that I remember. I plan to try the cheese blocks as well to see how well they slice and grate. I will continue to experiment with these recipes, as they are a tasty and healthy way to satisfy cheese cravings.

I've made a few recipes in this book. They have all been great! We make grilled "cheese" sandwiches, use it in wraps, on English muffins, etc. Tonight I made the Eggplant Parmezano. Excellent! I've also made the baked Mac and Cheese, which was also very good. I definitely recommend this book. It's cheesy, though it doesn't really taste like "real" cheese. But my meat eating, cheese loving husband has loved everything I've made so far and is impressed by the cheesieness.

This is a wonderful book. I recently decided to become a vegetarian/vegan and was resigned to giving up the comfort of cheese forever. I bought it for its novelty value and did not have high expectations. I was happily surprised. Not only are most of the recipes delicious but they are also a lot of fun. The Crock Cheese is addictive I must keep in the fridge at all times. I'm surprised I don't sleep with some under my pillow! It makes the most wonderfully decadent grilled cheese sandwiches when fried in a lot of veggie margarine. I prefer them to Velveeta! Thank you for the hard work, compassion and inspiration that went into this terrific book!

The Ultimate Uncheese Cookbook: Delicious Dairy-Free Cheeses and Classic "Uncheese" Dishes

These recipes are not only some of the easiest (a spoon or blender is the highest tech I have used so far), but the most delicious uncheeses EVER! I have tried many mac n' cheese boxed uncheeses, bottled uncheese, and block uncheese. These recipes don't have a lot of soy, and therefore lack the chalkiness you sometimes get with the uncheese you buy in the store.
The one drawback to these recipes is the unique ingredients. I love the cashew butter chedder, and the white bean boursin (with umi boshi paste to make it tangy!). Some of these ingredients can be pricey (especially if you insist on the organic options, but the flavor is awesome because you can feed them to your cheese eating friends as "white bean spread" or "cashew butter spread" and you won't get that puckered "Fake cheese?" face.
The best I've had!

I read this entire book in one night. I have had fibro for most of my life and was diagnosed almost 20 years ago. I have read dozens of books on this subject and was completely prepared to try this protocol. I bought all the new cosmetics and soaps and even got my Guai but when I started reading the posts week after week in the guai support groups online I became very skeptical if this is the route I wanted to take. I suggest one signs up to the guai support groups BEFORE starting this protocol and really pay attention to what the people say. I find it odd that so many and I mean ALOT of the people are still taking loads of drugs along with this program and so many seem to be suffering well into the years instead of weeks or even months. If you read online in regular Fibro support groups this protocol does not have a high rating. I went on this protocol and for a month experienced the worst fibro symtoms of my entire life. Completely laying me out. Pain for an unknown period of time is to be expected but in the guai support groups you find that this pain on average seems to last for months and years. Didn't seem reasonable to me so I stopped and have now tried Dr. Teitelbaum's protocol called SHIN outlined in his book called From FATIGUED TO FANTASTIC and already am seeing a response by my body in the sleep and energy areas. Both are improving. What your Dr. May not tell you about Fibro is interesting and informative and a good read but I would highly suggest really listening to people who are doing this protocol online in the support groups and see what you think first before actually tring it.

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia

This book is written by a male physician that was stricken down with fibromyalgia and has devoted his life to find a cure. His three daughters also inherited this disease. He claims he has found a cure (you need to read the book and/or possibly visit this doctor). And since there was such a stigma attached to fibromyalgia diagnosis a lot of useful information and help was swept under the rug by our physicians for many years. My mother is now deceased, but she went to many doctors for years complaining of this ailment searching for help. My mother was told that she was crazy and was sent home with pain medications and to suffer in silence! Now ALL of her four children have Fibro as well. I feel so bad that so many people (including my mother) are suffering needlessly because the male researchers of the past have left the fibro suffers down. It's a disgrace to anyone with connective tissue disease. People with fibro need to read this book! We're told that fibro is a "syndrome" because the medical industry just doesn't know what causes it. Which I find utterly offensive because when you live with this disease of severe pain over your entire body we certainly don't think or feel it's a snydrome!! The majority of fibro victims are females. If more males had this disease then the medical field would already know what causes it and there would be a definite cure! Just stating a fact. Come on doctors and researches!! I am sorry if I sound angry but the truth is I am very angry. And so should everyone else who has connective tissue disease aka fibromyalgia. You need to reach out to your doctors, nurses, researchers, and politicians to get something done to help! When you read this book you will see yourself and your siblings who also suffer. All the fragmented ailments start to come together and make sense. A must for your fibro library!

Was disappointed in this book. I didn't feel there was anything in it that I haven't read in the many other self-help books about overeating, and in the few others I've read on post-bariatric surgery life. A big let-down.

Dissapointing: Not a motivating or helpful guide.

I was dissapointed with this little book. Treatment of a really important componant of weight loss surgery, your emotions, was superficial. I felt it smacked of someone who had no personal experience of being overweight - I could be wrong. And while it's not essential that the author have had direct experience of being overweight, I just got the sense that the author didn't have a realistic view of what is required to overcome the emotional baggage that someone who has got to the point of having weight loss surgery has.

This is a light-weight book (no pun intended) that didn't provide me with any realistic useful tips to use on my weight-loss journey. The constrant referals to seek out professional help made the value of the book redundant.

WOW ..What a great Companion Book

A really good "feel good " book, that tells it upfront about how you can make this surgery successful for anyone. If you follow the instructions and use their guidelines you will find you don't want to leave this book behind. Easy read, wonderful Advice!

I am a Bariatric Coordinator at a medical center in Nebraska. I have many books on bariatric surgery related to care and experience of the patient through all phases of surgery and aftercare. This by far is the best book I have found. It is very forthright and practical! I have members of my support group reviewing several copies that I ordered. We are strongly considering using this book for discussion at some of our support group meetings in 2009. I would encourage you to get this book because it really gives you a common sense approach to bariatric surgery as a patient. Thanks.

Write, Write, And Write Some More...Then KEEP Writing If You Wanna Lose Weight!

If only it was as easy as writing your way to weight loss (typing does burn calories, right?!), then everybody would become a William Shakespeare overnight. But alas parting with that myth is such sweet sorrow. However, there is merit to the idea of getting your mind off of eating when you really don't need to by putting your thoughts down on paper. Gee, imagine that! The concept behind this book is a good one because it forces you to share thoughts with yourself that you may not even realize were there before. Being honest with yourself about how you choose to live your life, including the foods you stuff in your mouth, will open your eyes to a reflection of YOU that may have never manifested itself before. This book reaffirmed for me one of the major reasons I enjoy blogging so much--it's a creative release that allows me the chance to lay it all out there while taking my mind off of idle things that could drive me to eating that high-carb junk again. So maybe writing is a great way to weight loss after all!

"The Writing Diet" offers a creative approach to food and life issues, centering on paying attention to them by daily mindful journaling and this author's signature "Morning Pages". Cameron takes a leaf out of many different body management techniques, with numerous personal stories including her own. The general mood is gentle, uplifting and positive. I was able to minimize my tendency, when watching my eating habits, to regard every small tumble off the wagon as a catastrophic failure. My favorite motto from the book, to be pasted on the refrigerator, is "Eating Clean" -- which points toward a good way of eating rather than concentrating on deprivation like so many other dieting methods do.

Lovely writing, some concerns

There are some wonderful nuggets of wisdom in this book. The idea of clean-eating, clean-living and working through repressed emotions to avoid compulsive eating are not new, but they are eminently readable in Cameron's lovely prose.

The only issues I had in this book is that there is a hint of disordered-eating mentality, such as when the author talks about having an isolated piece of pie and a cup of tea at a diner as a "relapse", endorsing artificially sweetened foods (artificial sweeteners do not help with weight loss, and may in fact trigger sugar cravings), and "saving calories" in order to have a "binge" of favorite comfort foods...these are not normal attitudes towards food.

I would probably purchase this book in paperback (I first borrowed it from the library), if only to have on hand some inspirational reading when I want to explore the roots of my tendency towards compulsive eating. But I would not read it for nutritional advice.

Finally--a new approach to weight loss

I love this book! I think that I have read every diet book and tried every diet plan out there. And...this one works! I have always known that I am an emotional eater, but no one could ever show me how to stop being one. This book does! Through all of the writing exercises and thoughtful walking, I quickly saw what was causing me to overeat and solutions. All without an enormous therapy bill. While the author does make some food suggestions that I do not agree with (artificial sweetners, banning dessert forever, etc), quite frankly what diet book doesn't make some suggestions that don't work for you? Use the writing exercises, and decide what kind of diet works best for you, which in the end, is what the author says to do. A great find for any fed-up dieter!

This book is essentially written from a very disordered place. Julia Cameron is GREAT on the creativity work she does, but needs to stay out of this area, as it is clearly a problematic one in her life. I work with people with eating disorders and purchased this book hoping to find a tool that would help them. I would never suggest it to anyone struggling with food issues (or, I guess, anyone at all). She is afraid of and unfriendly toward food. Peace with food must involve acceptance of our appetites and development of trust in our bodies' ultimate knowledge of what we need. We can learn to be comfortable with sweet or salty of fatty foods, and once they are no longer a forbidden enemy, peace is possible. There are many other helpful books addressing intuitive eating (Eating Mindfully is one), compulsive overeating (books by Geneen Roth, or a book called Overcoming Overeating can be helpful), or recovery from eating disorders (Ira Sacker's newest book--name escapes me, Life without ED).

Montel is very passionate about sharing what he is doing to keep himself healthy. I wanted to go out and get a green smoothie after reading his section on how he was introduced to green smoothies. He said it "blew his mind"!

There are so many books on MS. Anyone with MS should be cautious of what you read. I live it and do agree with some of Montel's epiphany. One of the true points he made was everyone's ms is different. This book is mostly about foods that can change and aid in helping your health, which I agree with a little. It is a great effort in expressing how to want to eat better. It doesn't help you to tie your shoes or to write a letter to a friend. I don't doubt that he did tons of research, so have I. I am lucky enough to have friends in the medical field that give me literature on the real deals of MS. This is only a book of hope not fact. Read a book called Multiple sclerosis, current staus & strategies for future by Institute of Medicine. Book of facts!
