The only issues I had in this book is that there is a hint of disordered-eating mentality, such as when the author talks about having an isolated piece of pie and a cup of tea at a diner as a "relapse", endorsing artificially sweetened foods (artificial sweeteners do not help with weight loss, and may in fact trigger sugar cravings), and "saving calories" in order to have a "binge" of favorite comfort foods...these are not normal attitudes towards food.
I would probably purchase this book in paperback (I first borrowed it from the library), if only to have on hand some inspirational reading when I want to explore the roots of my tendency towards compulsive eating. But I would not read it for nutritional advice.

One caveat - he does advocate using soy milk and other soy products. I am not 100% anti-soy, but I feel that one needs to use soy sparingly, and as un-processed as possible.
Just an FYI for those who are not familiar with Fuhrman, he is an advocate of a raw diet... while there are some cooked recipes in this book, and even a couple with meat, a lot of them are raw.
I've tried a bunch of the recipes and my family enjoys them. The date-nut pop-ems were a huge hit with my toddler and she requests them often.

He gives the truth, just not the whole truthReview Date: 2008-07-23
I will start by reviewing the recipes in the book. I have only tried a handful and have met with little to no success. Either the recipe didn't work or my unpicky children would not eat it. For my family the meals were not balanced enough. I'm sure he would be unhappy to know that I had to add "meat" to his recipes for them to work.
He does give many truths in the book. For example, red meat causes cancer. He does not give the whole truth however. It is undigested red meat. Rather than suggesting you fully cook your meat and eat it in moderation he goes to an extreme. Every person is different. My family needs a lot more meat and substance in our diet to be happy and healthy. We are not bad people for it and not unhealthy as he would lead you to believe.
There are several extremist diets out there. This is the opposite extreme as Atkins but an extreme none the less. I would suggest reading Michael Pollan instead. This diet will work for a few I'm sure. But it will leave many unsatisfied.
Every mom knows in her heart what is best for her family. You do not need Dr. Joel Fuhrman to tell you. Listen to your heart and, to quote Pollan, "eat food, not too much, mostly vegetables."

I do agree with Delores (and others) who experience headaches a few days into the diet. However, she is incorrect to say that using addiction terminology is wrong. It is, in fact, right on. Just watch very heavy people gorging on ice cream, candy, cake, cookies, and Grape-Nuts (yes, they have a huge amount of sugar disguised as barley malt). Why do they do it? They really need to, physically and mentally. That's addiction. Like all addicts, when they gorge on their addictive substance (that first drink of alcohol, the first bite of ice cream, that big bowl of Grape-Nuts, etc.) they feel great. But we all now what happens down the line. So, get through the headaches (mine came on after three days and did not fully disappear until about ten days). That was seven years ago and I don't remember ever having another headache. I do remember effortlessly losing 65 pounds (it's still all off), controlling my blood pressure without medication, and dropping my frighteningly high fasting triglycerides (over 400) to 89. Oh and my cholesterol did nothing. It was at 155 when I started and it has been at 155 (plus or minus 10) the whole time. With my HDL at 60+, I'm not worried.
Bottom line: If you are creative and determined, the low-carb diet is a very easy one to follow and this book, with all its delicious recipes, sensible advice on exercise, and an excellent overall discussion of why low-carb works is a great place to start.

Headaches, leg cramps and a measily two poundsReview Date: 2008-02-08
I decided, however, that I could "do Atkins" for a month in order to drop 10-15 pounds quickly before a warm-weather vacation. I purchased a copy of "The All-New Atkins Advantage."
My skepticism about the diet's healthfulness tweaked up a few notches when I read the book's recommendation for a daily fiber supplement. Nature did not intend fiber to come in a capsule or wafer. Still, I was eager to lose those pounds; if most of them came off during the "Induction Phase" as the book promised, I could deal with capsulized fiber for a few weeks.
I was awakened very early on the fourth morning of this eating plan with a blazing, nausea-producing headache. The last time I'd had a headache that severe I had popped one of those over-the-counter herbal hormone supplements hawked by actress Cybill Shepherd. I suspected the diet was to blame, but I pressed on.
The morning headaches - not as severe as that first one, but still unpleasant - continued. I consulted my book. Sometimes, I learned, headaches are due to "withdrawal" from carbs. Riiiiiight.
Look, carbs are not drugs. The authors' use of substance abuse terminology in connection with foods the human body requires was annoying, if not downright deceptive. The headaches, along with the calf cramps I was also experiencing, were not "withdrawal" symptoms. They were deprivation symptoms. I was getting plenty of calories, but I was not getting food my body needs.
Still, I pressed on.
After one week of following the diet religiously, I awoke with the usual headache and got on the scale. I'd lost two pounds, much less than what the book suggested I'd lose. Hell, I can lose two pounds in a week on a balanced calorie-reducing diet and avoid the headaches and leg cramps altogether.
I went downstairs and poured myself a bowl of Grapenuts and topped it with a sprinkling of raisins. And I loved each and every one of those 62 healthy and delicious carbohydrate grams.

Still relevant after all these years ...Review Date: 2007-12-19
Well, you may laugh and think of this book as too-1980s! (I think it's first date of publication was 1981.) But unlike big hair and shoulder-pads, this method of determining one's personal colors stands the test of time. (The actual styles recommended in the wardrobe section are outdated, but the color information and photographs make up for this.)
Basically there's four color-groupings named after the four seasons. To find out which group you fall into, have a good look at the color of your hair and eyes. Also, try putting a white sheet of paper under your wrist for a neutral background while you determine whether or not you have a blue- or a gold-undertone to your skin.
This works for all ethnic groups, which are dispersed fairly evenly across the four groupings. What works for your sister or mother might not work for you. Once you're familiar with the color diagnosing you can always use it to help the men in your life shop.
Winters and Summers have a blue-undertone to their skin and look good in silver-toned jewelry. Winters look good in deep, clear colors like black, navy-blue, true red, and pure white. Summers get a lot of blue-gray and rose tones. Autumns and Springs have a gold-undertone to their skin and look good in gold-toned jewelry. Autumns look good in earth tones, and Springs get a lot of off-white, ivory, and pastel.
I'm simplifying greatly; it's best to have a look at the photographs in the book which are amazingly convincing. Especially the ones that have the models dressed in the "right" and "wrong" colors so you can see the difference. Don't bother to buy the hideously expensive color-swatches offered separately from the book as an aid to on-the-spot shopping: the excellent photographs are good enough.

Subliminal Brain Theta Wave TherapyReview Date: 2008-04-09
A tri-fold paper is included, which explains that Brain Sync generates whole brain synchronization and that listening with stereo headphones adds the ability to balance both brain hemispheres. Although it says you can listen to either of the 2 tracks anywhere, I do NOT recommend you listen in the car, unless you are a passenger and are using headphones. I find these types of programs are optimal for quiet meditation time or bedtime, and optimal with earphones. Depending on your job, you can play the CD at work (but, again, I do not recommend playing it if you are operating machinery. Sometimes these types of programs can make you sleepy.) I also firmly believe that you can play a subliminal CD at bedtime and fall asleep with it. Your subconscious mind should pick up the reprogramming, whether you are asleep or awake.
In this CD, you do not hear the 20 subliminal messages with your conscious mind. They are apparently imbedded in the background and are listed in the trifold. Some examples are: "Every cell of my body exudes beauty and health; I relax into my perfect weight; I burn fat; I am active and full of energy." The trifold advertises a couple of other subliminal CDs, if you are interested, including "Stop Smoking and "Deep Sleep". There is even one called "Attract Love" (ooo la la!) The trifold suggests that you listen to the CD every day for 6 weeks.
What do I think? I'm so glad that you asked. I am a firm believer in high-quality subliminal programming CDs. I have had a good deal of success with some of them. BUT, I have found you need to listen to them EVERY day for at least 30 days to effect a behavioral change. That's 30 days in a row, folks, so be ready to do that. Would something less work? Well, there are no finites (all things are possible), but, I think probably not. (The company recommends 6 weeks, so I would suggest you go with their recommendation because it is likely based on their studies with this material. )
Is this high-quality? I just started it myself, but I believe so, based on the vibration I feel and my past experience with these types of programs. That's why I am rating it a 5. I will be back with a follow up comment about the end of May 2008 or sooner.
By the way, these programs do usually start to work before the 30 day/or 6 week period concludes. You generally notice subtle differences in the way you think/react/behave. That is your indication that the subliminal material is beginning to work on you. But, one more time, in order to set patterns of behavior change in place, you really need to commit to the one hour a day, every day for the full period. If you listen more that that, you will probably achieve results faster.
There are no short cuts to losing weight that I am aware of. The "lose weight fast" pills that I have found, and the special diets, are only good for a few pounds, especially as you gets older and your metabolism is less active. Exercise helps a great deal, as does eating less calories and good foods (veggies/fruits/proteins). A CD like this one can help re-program your belief system to do the right things and keep you motivated in the right direction.

The Sugar SolutionReview Date: 2008-05-04
Filled with solid adviceReview Date: 2008-06-05
No, you say. Not me. Oh yeah? Start counting.
This book is a must for those who would understand the role sugar plays in our lives and how our society has been turned into the fattest in the world through the food industry's inclusion of high-fructose corn syrup in almost everything it sells.
Commercially prepared foods are full of high-fructose corn syrup - which is not the "natural" sugar manufacturers would like us to believe it is. It's simple refined sugar - and it's deadly.
This is a must read book for those who wish to turn their lives and their diets around.

Then I purchased The Sugar Solution. The first thing the book did was scare the crap out of me. I didn't realize how my eating habits literally endangered me. About 50 pages in, I began to realize that sugar was possibly keeping me from losing weight. It was affecting me on a cellular level, urging my cells to retain unneeded fat. It was also putting my arteries in severe risk of damage due to high blood pressure and unchecked sugar levels.
I began checking sugar content before I ate anything and was surprised to find how much sugar seemingly "safe" foods contained. Soon, I began to drop some weight. Amazingly, I found myself putting food away 3/4 into a meal. I began eating when I was actually hungry. A month and a half after reading the book, I am 25 pounds lighter and generally calmer. I don't suffer mood swings anymore--another symptom of blood sugar spikes.
My beef with this book is in the tone. The book was put together from pieces of magazine content, and it feels like it. Titles are consistently alliterate and tacky. Exclamation points should be used sparingly (or so I thought). After a few hundred pages of this, I began to get irritated, as the book felt less scientific and more corny.
Overall, I would absolutely suggest this book to people on the road to diabetes or people simply concerned about their health. For me, the culprit is sugar. If I can control my sugar, I can control my eating. Get healthy before it's too late.
UPDATE
Forty-five pounds shed and counting. I can't say things would have gone this smoothly if not for this book.

Why I Eat The Way I DO.....(New Thoughts)Review Date: 2008-04-29
Sometimes, Geneen seemed to go into a lot of "personal" stories that might seem like she was losing tract of the purpose of her book. I was often able to see the reason behind it as she was trying to drive a point across by relating her stories (and others') so that the reader can see the relationship between food and love. Overall, I think there were some very good points that she brought out that I never would have seen or thought of had it not been for this book.

One such place is in the book, "SuperFoods for Babies and Children," by Annabel Karmel. What an excellent resource! Here are just a few of the wonderful treasures we found in this informative book:
* Detailed, healthy recipes for main meals and desserts, categorized by age;
*Sample meal planners, categorized by age;
*Numerous food tips and the importance of a variety of each of the foods in our everyday diet;
*What foods you should avoid giving your baby;
*How to shop for healthy foods;
*Much information on eating "superfoods" by colors and how you can give your child the best start in life by eating a well-balanced diet.
This book also has a section that discusses food allergies and lists foods to cure common ailments.
The steps are clearly detailed beginning at 6 months of age -- what foods you should begin introducing to your child...how to know if they are ready for solids...how to make baby food...and sample meal planners for the first 4 weeks of first solid foods. There are large colorful photographs of meals, and cute vegetable and fruit illustrations throughout the book. Short "Did you know?" facts and other side bar tips give you a quick look at important food information and how those foods can benefit our bodies.
MyParenTime.com highly recommends this book -- informative content, clear appetizing food photos, and an abundance of ideas, make this book a winner! But be warned -- you might have some real fun creating these meals, and your child may beg you to make more healthy meals for them!
