I had high hopes for this book considering the wonderful title but soon found it is run of the mill conventional. As soon as I hit the "Dairy is good for you" chapter, I knew the authors were not fully informed as dairy is of concern and may CAUSE much osteoporosis not cure it.
This book is good for the person who is just beginning to think of food as medicine but leaves out many of the important new facts regarding possible negative food issues.

Tosca's journal is the only way to efficiently track your progress in a fast , efficient manner. I have tried many journals , but this is the only one I've stuck with because of its organized , colorful and factual format.. And Tosca includes many pics of herself so that you know her words are coming straight from her own successes.. Gorgeous illustrations and loads of motivational info , defintely a must have if you want to look back one day and see how you got your beachbody:-)FATFREEMITCHD on bodybuilding.com

This journal goes along with Tosca Reno's Eat-clean Diet Workout Book. However,it can be used to track any weight training progress. It does have some motivational sayings/info on the pages, but nothing that's not common knowledge. Basically there are two charts: one for weekly, monthly and long-term goals and one to list the exercises. On the exercise chart are spaces to list body part, exercise, and the weight/reps used for up to 5 sets. At the bottom of the page is a space to note cardio activity and general notes. Samples of each of the charts is in the author's Eat-clean Diet Workout book and can be reproduced from there. I gave it 3 stars because you have to write in the name of the each exercise and pound used each day. Also there is not any designated nutrition notes. This is surprising given Reno's emphasis on clean eating and frequent small meals. Other journals provide space for nutrition and weights used. Reno's book might work as a motivating tool if you like to have the matching set of books. Otherwise, keep a computer based journal or use a regular spiral notebook/steno pad to keep track of your progress.

I bought this book a few weeks ago and really enjoyed reading it. I think it was thought-provoking. I really liked the way the authors looked at what the families purchased and then discussed the items and their origins. I think that helps the average person to relate to the information. I highly recommend the book to all people that care and are curious about where their food comes from and if there are ethical implications that they should consider before making the purchase (e.g., environmental considerations, animal concerns, etc.). Two thumbs up for this book!

Objective and non-preachy

Throughly researched, this book provides an insightful and provocative look into the ethical/environmental concerns revolving around our meat eating culture. What Singer and Mason are able to avoid is taking on a holier-than-thou tone, while they come to the sensible conclusion that a vegan lifestyle is preferable to an omnivorous one. However, they also investigate the truth behind food labels, and the issues of organic and local food. Very thoughtful, and hopefully this book will instigate further change in people who wish to make a positive change for the sake of the world.

This book offers a very thought-provoking view into the world of food. Forget restaurant hygiene and other crazes, this book portrays the alarming state of the food industry as it operates in the USA today (with a slight glimpse into Europe as well). The authors do a very good job at presenting facts and issues surrounding the ethics (obviously) of the food industry, with a focus on farming. Unlike many other similar discussions, I felt the authors' approach was very easy to read (or digest, heh), with a seemingly open-minded view on the world.

Since finishing the read, I have altered my personal food buying decisions. I'm not perfect by any means, but I feel learning about the "what goes on behind closed doors" has helped me find a new appreciation for awareness and conscientiousness about food. I've given up some foods entirely, and am doing much more research in my buying decisions. I appreciate the education the book provided me, and already feel like a better person for the decisions it's helped me made.

Note: I'm an omnivore, and I *love* steaks. I'm just a bit more thoughtful than I was before about them.

A great book on a broad range of subjects

I really thought this was a great book. It is well written (believe it or not it is a "page turner") and it covers a broad range of topics in an open minded and sober manner. It deals with ethical, envirnomental and economic political side of what we eat, as well as other topics and uses a narrative thread following 3 different families with different lifestyles. I got a lot out of it.

This is a superb book. Everyone should read this to know what they are truly consuming and how it effects our planet and its inhabitants. It's time that we are aware of the consequences of our food choices so that we may hopefully make better choices and decrease our impact on the planet.

informative for class but....

I bought this book/cd for an online class. Facts are facts and that is what I needed it for. But the CD and Book do not always corelate the same information, for instance in the book it states that there are 10 essential amino acids but on the CD flashcards it says there are 9. If I guessed 9 on my test - I would be wrong.
Also, the opinions of the author tend to be written as fact and there are some that I definitely disagree with from personal experience. Example: the author states that B12 deficiency is rare - well not in my world. I have Celiac Disease (1 of 133 americans have it) and pernicious anemia or b12 deficiency is quite common.
To summarize: if you need the book for a class - it is informative - but disregard the opinions and watch out for mistakes on the CD.

Honest. Thoughtful. Insightful. True. Read both Overcoming Overeating and When Women Stop Hating Their Bodies by the same authors, join the online group at Yahoo! Groups, and solve your problems with weight, body image, dieting and all the rest of it. It may not be the answer you thought you were seeking, but it's the real answer. Notice the price, too. The authors are far more concerned with helping us than with raking in the "dough". There's nothing else to buy. There are no gizmos, special foods, diet drinks or powders, pills or pre-packaged meals. Since starting this program a little over two months ago I'm feeling so much more at peace, in control, and happy. And I'm not even doing it completely right! I'm just doing what I can! If you're sick of your weight "problem" this book will give you the plan that solves it for good.

I found this book to be most interesting and factual. Inasmuch as I am a compulsive eater I found it describing me in a way that I have never seen or heard before. I always knew it in my heart but did not want to admit it but am not sure I am courageous enough to enter into the plan the book suggests. Felt better about myself, however, seeing it all in writing that described me so well.

Our initial preview of the Kindle is that it is absolutely great! The print quality is outstanding, as are the features on the device. It took only a few moments to figure out how to utilize the scrolling and other controlling functions.

We love the dictionary feature and its ease of use. The font size selection is a real plus for us. The ability to upload books to our computer is a nice touch. It will allow us to save books per chance we begin to reach the saturation point on our Kindle.

Our Kindle only arrived yesterday, so we've not yet checked out the book "library" at Amazon. We do expect to do so shortly.

Sincerely,

Vance & Joan Shannon

I am a big fan of Dr. Ornish and his vegetarian approach to treating and preventing heart disease. When I am trying a new recipe I surround it with simple additions so I can concentrate on the new fare, especially if it includes alot of ingredients. Most of the meal plans in this book are complicated, requiring alot of ingredients for each new item on the menu for that meal. I could not successfully use this book as written, except to try one item at a time.

The book gives you a simple approach on two opinions towards dieting and solutions that worked for them. The book talks to you, not reads to you, which had me reading the book quite quickly. It talks about the emotions that you go thru through out the process and let's you know that you are not alone with the feelings that you are going thru.

The book was a fun read. Written with great wit and insight. It is a high protein diet. I found that the perspective of two women dealing with and living in the real world made their take on a high protein diet unique. It was very very encouraging and dead on as the diet progresses to give that pat on the back or kick in the behind. I also purchased the cookbook, but did not care for it. I think mainly due to the difference in Engllish and American foods. Many of the fish dishes were not foods I had ever heard of or probably would ever make.

The Ultimate Uncheese Cookbook: Delicious Dairy-Free Cheeses and Classic "Uncheese" Dishes

These recipes are not only some of the easiest (a spoon or blender is the highest tech I have used so far), but the most delicious uncheeses EVER! I have tried many mac n' cheese boxed uncheeses, bottled uncheese, and block uncheese. These recipes don't have a lot of soy, and therefore lack the chalkiness you sometimes get with the uncheese you buy in the store.
The one drawback to these recipes is the unique ingredients. I love the cashew butter chedder, and the white bean boursin (with umi boshi paste to make it tangy!). Some of these ingredients can be pricey (especially if you insist on the organic options, but the flavor is awesome because you can feed them to your cheese eating friends as "white bean spread" or "cashew butter spread" and you won't get that puckered "Fake cheese?" face.
The best I've had!

I was very impressed by the uncheese dips in this book that I have made so far. I have been vegan for the last five years and the one food that I miss from my pre-vegan days is cheese. This cookbook is a great way to make tangy cheese-inspired dips that are flavorful, but not loaded with fat, the way cheese made from dairy is. So far I have made the Chick Cheez, Gee Wiz spread and the Red wine cheese spread (forgot the exact name). The Chick Cheez came closest to the dairy cheese taste that I remember. I plan to try the cheese blocks as well to see how well they slice and grate. I will continue to experiment with these recipes, as they are a tasty and healthy way to satisfy cheese cravings.

I've made a few recipes in this book. They have all been great! We make grilled "cheese" sandwiches, use it in wraps, on English muffins, etc. Tonight I made the Eggplant Parmezano. Excellent! I've also made the baked Mac and Cheese, which was also very good. I definitely recommend this book. It's cheesy, though it doesn't really taste like "real" cheese. But my meat eating, cheese loving husband has loved everything I've made so far and is impressed by the cheesieness.

This is a wonderful book. I recently decided to become a vegetarian/vegan and was resigned to giving up the comfort of cheese forever. I bought it for its novelty value and did not have high expectations. I was happily surprised. Not only are most of the recipes delicious but they are also a lot of fun. The Crock Cheese is addictive I must keep in the fridge at all times. I'm surprised I don't sleep with some under my pillow! It makes the most wonderfully decadent grilled cheese sandwiches when fried in a lot of veggie margarine. I prefer them to Velveeta! Thank you for the hard work, compassion and inspiration that went into this terrific book!
