Don't be fooled by title - much more than just cooking tips
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-20
I was pleasantly surprised that the book goes far beyond gluten-free cooking tips and recipes. I have read Korn's other 3 books, and all have been tremendously helpful, and even inspiring. The gluten-free diet can be a shocker (give up your beer, your bread, your tasty baked treats, etc.), but the author somehow makes it easy to understand the nuances of this tricky diet. You feel like you are getting one-on-one expert advice in an easygoing, relaxed style. It's weird, but you feel like you know the author after reading the book. The book is even funny.

For anyone starting out on a gluten-free diet, any of Korn's books are winners. If you also like to cook, this is a double dose of education. You will probably refer to it often. Highly recommended on all counts.

Losing Weight and Feeling Great

Review Date: 2007-09-10
This book has been a godsend in my life. I had lost 8 pounds by starting walking, got stuck, lost another 8 pounds through Weight Watchers and got stuck again for several months. Finally, I decided to try Dr. McDougall's plan. I had the book for quite some time, but didn't think I could follow his plan. Wow! What a surprise! Not only am I having fun with it, I've lost a total of 22 so far on the McDougall Plan with only 9 left to reach my idea weight and it has been faster than anything I've tried before - about 1.5 - 2 pounds per week. It has been easier than I could have imagined because I am never hungry. For the first time in my life, my body tells me when I am full and I can stop eating. I have always loved starches anyway, and this diet is perfect for me. I've started trying a lot of the recipes and have been thoroughly happy with most of them. I have only one disagreement with Dr. McDougall and that is in the area of plant fats (unprocessed) like avocados. I eat them quite often and am still losing weight and feel great. If I slow down in my weight loss, I may try to cut down, but right now I'm doing too well to change anything.

just read john robbins book... dr mcdougall is specific with regards to the requirements of the program, but there is something lacking -- warmth... he seems like a snobbish know-it-all who brags too much, judging from the way he wrote his book.

Dr. John McDougall is that rare doctor in American medicine: One who tells the truth about the drugs or surgery stance of the AMA. Most refreshing is his absolute candor, leading the reader to wonder at times why his medical license is stil in tact. For those who seek medical truth, it doesn't get any straighter John McDougall.

Interesting information

Review Date: 2007-03-20
I purchased this book after visiting Dr. McDougall's web site. Actually, almost all of the information in this book can be found at his web site, so if you are looking for new recipes or other information not posted on his site, this is not the book for you. You might want to buy something else, a newer book or DVD. This book outlines his recommended diet and lifestyle for optimal health including the rationale for avoiding certain foods and including others - basically avoiding all animal products and lowering fat intake. There is a 12-day diet plan included as well as various recipes and information on a number of health problems that can be helped by healthy eating. Overall, very interesting reading and a good start for anyone wanting to follow a low-fat vegan diet.

This book offers a wide variety of treatment options (dietary/ behavioral modification, use of various supplements) in the treatment of hypertension, as well as a comprehensive review of the prescription medications available for this condition. I found the dietary suggestions quite helpful, and this is one of the few books I have read which offers sound advice on use of dietary supplements as well as their presumed mechanism of action.

All in all, very good reading. Nothing new here, just ties together all facets of controlling your high blood pressure: vitamins, supplements, exercise, diet and stress reduction. Presents a variety of programs and explains in detail how each can potentially lower and control hypertension. A good "how to" book to keep handy and refer to often. I have started the program and after only 3 weeks, my blood pressure has dropped. I plan to "wean" myself off the high blood pressure medication I am on now and go "totally natural".

Excellent Book For Anyone Living With Chrohn's Disease

I paid 35 cents plus shipping and the book came like it is brand new condition. It is an outdated version but I had no intentions of paying the price for the updated one. Anyone living with chrohn's as myself should read it. I get the Chrohn's newsletters and keep up with anything that comes out for Chrohn's. Anyone with Chrohn's knows there is never enough information we can get on this dreadful disease. If anyone does purchase this book the author does have his own website. Do not hesitate to purchase used books from this company, there better than good in shipping and price on there books.

"Patient Heal Thyself" is the story of Jordan Rubin's recovery from Crohn's disease and how improving his diet played a role. It is a great guide to understanding how to attain better health. This book contains a lot of information on diet that is not mentioned in other books such as fermented foods and the good organisms found in soil. It is a good book to read to help bolster your knowledge of health and diet. I applaud the author on his writing achievement; however, I found it disturbing when he promotes his own company's supplements in this book.

"Patient Heal Thyself" is a good read and has much to teach, if you can get past the promotion for Jordan Rubin's products.

Love this diet!

Review Date: 2008-08-27
Within a few days of starting this diet, my appetite was shrinking! The tea really works well as an appetite suppressant. I'd reccommend this to anyone who likes tea and wants to lose weight. It's great that the book includes a meal plan for people who like structure and food suggestions for people who want to be more flexible.
You don't absolutely have to eat the foods "Dr. Tea" mentions in the book, you can eat other low calorie dishes from the basic suggestions (you can even eat lean steak, it's on the list of protiens!) provided that you drink enough tea. And it's not too terribly hard to get the amount of tea it specifies: just brew a bunch in the evening, cool it down, and put it in water bottles in the fridge for the next day. Or make a thermos of hot tea before you go to work. Take tea with you wherever you go, and you'll have no problem drinking enough.
You're supposed to drink tea when you're hungry between meals instead of snacks. What I've been doing is drinking tea when I'm hungry, then if I'm still hungry after that, I eat something small and heatlhy, like a piece of fruit. That works better for me.
"Dr. Tea" even has suggestions for what tea to drink when a craving hits. Granted, many of the teas he suggests are his own blends which he sells at [...], but then again he's the only one who's come up with teas specifically designed to satisfy cravings.
All in all, this is the best weight loss plan I've ever tried!

This book recommends that you drink at least 8 cups of tea per day. If you're making hot tea, this is really inconvenient, especially if you're a busy person. I bought some of his teas and I was disappointed -they weren't as good as I hoped.

FOOD AS MEDICINE

Review Date: 2007-06-20
I GIVE THIS BOOK A LOW SCORE BECAUSE IT IS NOT A VERY GOOD BOOK ON EATING.
THERE IS NO PORTION CONTROL INFORMATION OR SUGGESTIONS. PORTIONS ARE THE KEY TO A PROPER DIET. WE ALL [AMERICANS] EAT TOO MUCH. WE'RE ALL OVER WEIGHT AND SUFFER FROM MANY EATING RELATED DISORDERS. WHAT YOU EAT IS AS IMPORTANT
AS HOW MUCH. THE SHORT SECTION ON GASTRO-INTESTINAL DISORDERS FOLLOWS THE STANDARD ANTI-BIOTIC APPROACH THOUGH CULTURED DAIRY PRODUCTS [YOGURT,BUTTERMILK,ACIDOPHILUS, COTTAGE CHEESE, SAUER KRAUT ] AND FIBER DO A MUCH BETTER AND SAFER JOB OF CURING THESE PROBLEMS.
I THINK THE OBJECTIVE OF "MEDICINE" IN THE USA IS ILLNESS. BEING SICK IS BIG BUSINESS. PIG OUT AND OFTEN. BE SICK...ALWAYS SEE YOUR DOCTOR FOR ANOTHER DRUG OR TWO OR THREE...

For dietetics students...too simple

I had to buy this book for a class, but only used it once. It doesn't really contain THAT much information, and when one has to do research, this in not the best book to use as a reference. If you're not a student, I'd say it'll be very helpful, but for students...it is just too simple and doesn't get into the complicated facts about nutrition or dietetics we really need to learn. I already graduated, and I won't recommend this book as the reference for a major course in dietetics.

It's also become my standard gift for friends, weddings, and more.

Review Date: 2007-01-22
As a 55 year old mother, triathlon trainee and in a highly stressful hospital occupation, it was great to find such straightforward and complete information at my fingertips. This book is easy and enjoyable to read and yet manages to be a quick, comprehensive reference. I have randomly chosen health topics that interest me, for example, medication interactions with vitamin supplements. The information provided was to the point and beautifully organized. I was especially intrigued by the "Have You Ever Wondered" sections, that simply and effectively debunked common nutrition myths. This book provides believable ammunition against the fad diets and quick-fix formulas that only serve to squander our hard earned dollars and time.I believe it to be a "must have" for any home library and will include it as part of a wedding present for my niece this summer.

still using the USDA Food Guide Pyramid?

Review Date: 2007-05-18
I was disappointed to see that this book still endorses the USDA Food Guide Pyramid. Walter Willett's Book, "Eat, Drink, and be Healthy" has a much more acurate and up-to-date pyramid that emphasizes the importance of unsaturated oils, nuts, legumes, whole grains, and fish, and he doesn't get paid by beef and dairy lobbyists who pay our government to spread the false fact that it is necessary to eat these products to be healthy.

Review Date: 2008-02-21
I wholeheartedly recommend both the diet and this book--the materials that come with the starter pack are not nearly as comprehensive. I set a goal of 25 lbs. weight loss and I'm within 15 lbs. of being there, having started the diet in mid-Nov. This is much, much more user-friendly and easier to stick with than South Beach Diet, and yields tons more progress than I got on the Abs Diet for Women. I also HIGHLY recommend the Alli Cookbook for long-term success on the program--250 pages of recipes, many more than you get in this "overall" book. Great book, great cookbook, great online support, great overall diet plan!!!

I first thought this book was a waste since alot of the information was redundant. Then I tried some of the recipies and loved it. Alot of tasty recipies that make you feel like you are eating healthy without sacraficing a great meal with great taste. I altered some recipies to my own taste while still keeping it low fat. My family has no idea on how much healthier they are eating!

I was hoping to find definitive information within this book. However, it was not to be. Save your money.

I focused on curing my pregnancy-induced insomnia, improving my confidence at work, in addition to helping me keep my pregnancy weight gain under control. I fully believe this program helped in all these areas, and look forward to the time my new son allows me to use it again, this time for its intended purpose!
