Is it possible that there's secret diet where people are losing tons of weight and it's not the news of the decade if not century?? Um. No. Because this diet isn't a diet. It's another scam. Drink sugar water, lose weight. Drink oil and lose weight. Please. Don't buy into this crap. Eat an appropriate amount of calories for your size and activity level and stop putting money into this scam author's pockets. If this worked, the stories on every news channel would be non stop. You don't hear much about this diet because it's bogus.

The diet works for me-- 20 pounds in 10 weeks and holding steady nicely. Not sure how much is a direct effect of the oil, how much is reduction in snacking due to constraints on taking the oil, and how much is behavioral awareness due to dieting.
I also enjoyed the descriptions and discussion of formal research results a great deal, perhaps because I am a quantitative psychologist.

I started the Shangri-La diet three weeks ago and I'm already down to 225 from 245. I'm never hungry after small meals and I haven't felt this good in years. As an added benefit, this is the only "diet" out there that will save you money. The same dinners I used to eat in one sitting now last me two or three meals and I always have a doggy bag full of leftovers when I go out to eat.
The SLD regimen sounds strange at first but this book explained it well enough for me to try.

I've been using the oil for about three weeks and it seems to be working. I eat anything I want but I get full or even feel stuffed on less food. I've lost about 8 pounds with no deprivation which is good because I don't do deprivation.
If you try it, don't tell anyone because they will think you are crazy. Wait until they ask what you are doing to lose weight. Until they see the results, they won't believe it. Good luck.

Great book, for those who want to know how the "diet" industry is out to make you fail, and how the food industry sets us all up for failure. For those who feel they have no power over anything. . .take your power back over food and healthy eating, and be verbal about it!!!

The biggest thing I came away from Dr Wansink's with is an understanding that we don't stop eating because we're no longer hungry. By now recognizing and paying attention to the "external cues", and by implementing a few of the gimmicks that Dr Wansink has pointed out, I have managed to easily cut down on some of the junk food that I had been consuming. This book would be very valuable to anyone responsible for planning a families meals.

Do you know how much you are eating and why you eat what you do? You probably don't but this book can help you learn. It also offers easy to follow practical advise on how to control and reduce what you eat.
The author is a psychologist who studies eating. His work is mainly aimed at restaurants and food manufactures. They use it to learn how to present food in the way that will help them sell more. This book uses some of that same research to help us consumers learn to understand why we eat more then we think we do and what we can do about it.
Mindless Eating is well written in a friendly style. The information is presented as stories about the different experiments the author and his collaborators did. Wansink manages to avoid getting bogged down in the details that are required for scientific papers and does not use the condescending preaching style that many diet books end up using.
Unfortunately the style gets to be repetitive and predictable after awhile. Some of the stories were just too cute by the end of the book. I would have appreciated more variety in the narrative style.
Mindless Eating is not aimed at the seriously obese, it is more useful for those who have been slowly gaining weight over the years without really noticing. Wansink manages to convey a lot of interesting information in a fairly short book. He provides some practical advise that you will probably not find elsewhere.

"Mindless Eating" informs readers why they are typically conditioned to, without thinking, eat more than they realized. People eat more when you give them a bigger container. Almost any sign with a number promotion leads us to buy 30-100% more than we normally would. Losing over 1/2 lb./week triggers a metabolism slowdown that undercuts much of the value of the diet.
Cutting out our favorite foods is a bad idea - cutting back on how much is mindlessly doable. In most studies people can eat 20% less without noticing it. We eat the volume of food we want, not the calories. (Fill your plate with leafy vegetables; drink extra-whipped smoothies - more air.) Strategies include see all you eat - don't go back for 2nds and 3rds. Increasing the variety of food (eg. a buffet) also increases eating - even if it is only increasing the number of colors in an M&M bowl. Leftovers suggest you probably made too much and ate too much as well. Put healthy foods in a visible container (will eat more) and bad foods in a covered (invisible) one.
Visual cues (eg. passing a 7-11 store, viewing an ad for soup) create more eating. Eating with other encourages greater eating - unless you're already a heavy eater, then it encourages eating less. Don't eat snacks out of a box or package - pour yourself the intended amount and put the container away.
Positive expectations (name - "home-made;" and environment - china plate) help create food satisfaction.
Ice requires body heat (expenditure of calories) to melt.
Behavior modification experts say it takes about one month to break an old habit. Three 100-calorie changes/day can result in up to 30 lbs. less in a year.

I was gifted this book years ago and LOVE IT! I have a lot to lose and recently pulled this book out again. In the past I stopped short of my goal due to learning of other diets that sounded too good to be true. WHY stop something that is WORKING?!! This is a very healthy way to lose weight THAT WORKS~not just for breastfeeding Moms~and you won't be hungry, either. (((((HUGS))))) sandi
P.S. One thing I do with this book is write up a food journal to record my eating. In the front I copy the equation for my IBW and a list of foods (and the size of the serving) in each food group. I highlight the edges of these pages for easy reference. This way I can count food groups rather than calories, which is SO MUCH EASIER for me to keep track of!

I bought this book and sent it back immediately after reading in it that it advocates things such as drinking caffeine and eating high-sugar and high-trans fat foods while breastfeeding. It is disgusting to think that this book is so popular because the eating practices that this book preaches are so very wrong and especially harmful to your baby. I hate to say it, but it's with thinking like this that makes us Americans have all the health problems we do. I'd give this book no stars if I could.

This book has been very helpful for me to lose weight while breastfeeding. I had always been a petite 120 lb. woman until I got pregnant, and gained 43 lbs. I lost 17 lbs. the first month of breastfeeding after my son was born, but then I gained back 12 lbs. I was very frustrated because I have always been fit and healthy. I had been under the false pretense that I could now eat whatever I wanted and still lose weight while breastfeeding. Unfortunately this was not the case for me.
So, when I discovered this book about eating well and losing weight while breastfeeding I thought I would give it a chance. The thing I love most about this book is that it makes it easy to customize a healthy diet for your individual goals. It gives you a healthy weight range for all shapes and sizes of women. There are so many diets out there that lump everyone into the same category and just say how many calories to eat, or to cut out fat, or to cut out carbs. This book explains how to eat the correct number of calories for your individual body size without cutting out fat or carbs (but rather eating everything in moderation).
I also love the recipes! They are healthy and tasty. Imagine that. Quite contrary to the philosophy that if it tastes good, spit it out.
I recommend this book to anyone who really wants to make a life change and get back on track to a healthy weight while making sure to eat all of the healthy nutrients that your baby needs.

I wholeheartedly recommend both the diet and this book--the materials that come with the starter pack are not nearly as comprehensive. I set a goal of 25 lbs. weight loss and I'm within 15 lbs. of being there, having started the diet in mid-Nov. This is much, much more user-friendly and easier to stick with than South Beach Diet, and yields tons more progress than I got on the Abs Diet for Women. I also HIGHLY recommend the Alli Cookbook for long-term success on the program--250 pages of recipes, many more than you get in this "overall" book. Great book, great cookbook, great online support, great overall diet plan!!!

Alot of tasty recipies that make you feel like you are eating healthy without sacraficing a great meal with great taste. I altered some recipies to my own taste while still keeping it low fat. My family has no idea on how much healthier they are eating!

I was hoping to find definitive information within this book. However, it was not to be. It really didn't list any new information than was offered by the instruction booklet that comes with the pills. In fact, it appeared to just be a PR device for the product. What a disappointment. Save your money.

This gem is just bursting with information that you will not get from your mainstream western doctor. In essence, it shows you how to take charge of your own health. It gives valuable information on liver/gallbladder cleanse and colon cleansing - and everyone who has participated in the SAD(standard american diet) way of eating should definitely go forth and cleanse. You will feel immediate benefits! There is so much information contained in this book, it will open your eyes - you will never look at the medical community in the same way again. There are plenty of references for obtaining the recommended items. This man knows his stuff, I just wish that this information was available to every American instead of the pharmaceutical garbage that gets thrown at us through the mainstream media - I know for a fact that we would all be much healthier and happier too!

I'm not much of a cook. Routinely, I'd just grab and go in order to keep up with my fast paced lifestyle. But since the doctor diagnosed me with Type 2, I realized that I had to make some changes. Part of my new lease on life included eating healthier. Reversing Diabetes Cookbook: More Than 200 Delicious, Healthy Recipes is heaven sent. The recipes are easy to follow and the meals I've made so far are OUTSTANDING. In fact, what prompted me to write this review is the grilled terriyaki salmon I just prepared. Magnificent. I just had to share my findings with others.

Life Inside The Thin Cage" is a painfull but eye opening view into the twisted world of chronic dieting and hating our bodies to the point that we are hurting ourselves. Every woman should read this book. I promise when you start to read this book you wont be able to put it down. A must read for women! im greatfull i found this book. I have a much deeper understanding of what it really means to be a chronic dieter.
When i first heard the words eating disorder, the first thing that comes to my mind is anorexic or bulimic, When i see someone always worrying about their weight or have heard someone say "im on a diet" you rarely think that this person could have a problem because hearing those words "im on a diet" is so common, most dont give it a second thought. Hearing women worry over carbs/calories/exercise/fat grams etc.. is sadly perfectly normal. It wasnt untill i read this book that i began to realize that chronic dieting is too a disorder, if we dont see someone who is grossly underweight we assume they are fine, there just on a diet! Im glad i read this book. It was a wake up call for me as well as the others i shared this book with.

Constance digs deep in her work...which affects nearly everyone at some point in their life (if we were to be honest). From the anorexic to the severely [overweight]...wishing our bodies were something else is the norm and our world can often revolve around it. This book is a great book of encouragement and sound advice from a clinical standpoint. I'd highly recommend it to anyone!

What a marvelous resource - while I am a male reader I needed to understand women my sons will date, women in our family trapped in this cage like my niece, my sister, my cousin. Powerful and honest. Thank YOU Constance for this excellent title.

I happened upon this book by 'chance' (in other words, the hand of God, in my opinion) and when I read the back, a tear trickled down my face.
Having been overweight much of my life and now being a chronic dieter, I could resonate with Constance's words - I think those thoughts she expressed. I don't fit the DSM-IV diagnoses for bulimia or anorexia. I'm 'different'. She is so right - there is a constant battle going on in my mind regarding weight, eating, and exercising. I am addicted to food AND exercising. It governs my every waking thought and even governs my day and how I spend my time. It's insane, I know. Finding balance is something I am working on. The sad thing? Losing weight DEFINITELY changed my life (I lost 70 lbs) and people DO treat you differently (I've never been treated better than I have in the the years since I lost weight). So, it's hard not to be addicted to dieting when the results are so positive. But are they healthy? That is something I am working out. Thank you, Constance, for speaking what I feel!!!!

We can draw on the stories of others to find our way out. Constance manages to talk openly about her struggle with a sub clinical ED which allows the reader to find shelter and acceptance. Fellow sub ED journeymen will realize they are not alone and there is light at the end of the tunnel.
I believe her willingness to be vulnerable and create a public medium for sub clinical ED materialwill spur an increase in hope and help. The frustrating reality of our weight, our identity our ability to feel at "peace" with living is exhausting. When you read the pages of the "Thin" Cage a framework is given to your experience--you will recognize your behavior, your feelings, your habits, your rituals. And then you will realize you too want Balance. Constances' material will help you find the path to balance. Good reading!

Wow,wow, wow. I purchased this book because it was suggested to me from a friend about a year ago I finally bought it and I am so glad I did. I am a very skeptical person when it comes to self help books, but I have to say this wasn't a self help book at all. Roth makes you truly examine yourself by sharing her story and then asking questions that make you think about why we do the things we do (eat). What feelings are we surpressing? THIS BOOK IS NOT A "HOW TO GUIDE" - it just tells her story and other people stories and I bet anyone could find a piece of themselves in this book. It was funny and light hearted, not drab and psychological. I loved it so much I couldn't put it down and I ended up ordering 2 more of her books - Breaking Free of Emotional & Compulsive Eating.
If nothing else, the book is a great read. I highly recommend it.

I am not known for my reading abilities but this was an "easy" read!
Sometimes, Geneen seemed to go into a lot of "personal" stories that might seem like she was losing tract of the purpose of her book. I was often able to see the reason behind it as she was trying to drive a point across by relating her stories (and others') so that the reader can see the relationship between food and love. Overall, I think there were some very good points that she brought out that I never would have seen or thought of had it not been for this book.

I highly respect the work done by Geneen Roth - helping others overcome eating disorders and sharing bits of her own life experiences with us through her writings comforts us in knowing she has 'been there, done that.' She knows what she is talking about. I had heard of 'emotional eating' for a long time but always denied I had any type of intimate relationship with food, but over the past 3 years, going through highly stressful times and gaining 30 pounds in the process, I finally realized one day as I was eating my way through a bag of chips knowing that I shouldn't but feeling totally helpless, I realized that I was treating food as a long-lost-love-of-my-life. I can start a diet on any given day, but rest-assured by lunch time I 'miss' my regular junk so bad that I revert back to my not-so-healthy ways of eating. So I put the chips aside and looked up emotional eating on line and found so much about Geneen Roth and realized she's the one with the great articles in magaizines I've been reading for so long! So I order this book and within a few days I had read it all and had a greater understanding of how I'm using food to shove down my emotions. Instead of turning to people to share my emotions with I turn to food, because food will not reject me and food doesn't care how bad I'm feeling, it is there when I need it and distracts me from the stress in my life. I've never before been able to put into words my unhealthy, unbreakable relationship with food. This book doesn't offer a lot of 'advice' on how to deal with those emotions (I think she has another book for that I'm going to find and read)...but it is all about helping us understand our emotional selves better and our need for good social relationships and not to replace it with a food relationship or some other self-destructive pattern like drugs or alcohol. The first step is admitting/recognizing what the problem is...and this book has helped me do that. And so far since I have read this book I am overcoming my own emotional scars and using food for nourishment and healing instead of using food to comfort me or help me cope (that's what people are for!). Loving myself and being good to myself instead of abusing my body with food. I've always heard that losing weight "is not about the food". Now I really believe it. It's not about will-power or self control. It's about being mentally present and in the moment about what goes on in our minds, instead of mindlessly eating through a bag of chips or a carton of ice-cream or a whole bag of marshmallows. Thanks Geneen! Looking forward to reading more from you!

My father gave me Gracefully for mother's day. I then went to see Valerie Ramsey at the Tattered Cover in Denver when she did a book signing there. I was so impressed! She is wonderfully open and honest about her own life and how she and Heather Hummel came to write Gracefully. I was inspired to read the book cover to cover! The book is so easy to read - simple to understand and effortless to apply the concepts contained therein to one's own life. This is a book that would be perfect for anyone. May I only grow older (I am 41) as gracefully as Valerie Ramsey has!

Valerie Ramsey understands the true wisdom of beauty--that even though it is outwardly visible, its true source comes from within. Perhaps that is why all treatise on beauty should be written from the perspective of someone, like Ramsey, who has lived a life that allows for true beauty to flourish. Aging is bounded by time, beauty is not. And so, Ramsey, in prose that is clean, compelling, and--most of all--entirtely applicable, demonstrates what is so obvious and yet, for our youth obsessed world, often overlooked in terms of how to cultivate beauty, grace, and soulfulness throughout our lives.

The book also gives practical tips such as how to look great in a photograph, and I will use it as a reference tool for years to come. It is an easy and interesting read, and I would highly recommend it.

I found this book to be so easy to read with practical useful advice on creating a life that you want. It was inspirational at the same time, making me reaffirm my beliefs that one can accomplish whatever one puts one's mind to. I have passed this on to my mother and recommended to my girlfriends and aunts, but the over-riding message of this book is applicable to both genders. Worth the read. I took away tips to apply in daily life as well as future planning/dreaming.

I'm not going to rave completely about this book, but it is simply the best and most complete method of how to loose weight and keep it off. It is aimed at women more than men, but the things in the book are effective for men as well. He explains how the body works, which gives you better insight on why we eat what we eat in order to loose weight. It explains that carbs are just as important as protein, and that (certain) fats are just as important as vegetables. I was surprised to learn how fruit is healthy but does not help weight loss at all. Many books cover just excercise and others just food. This book gives you a solid routine for both. The food plan & excercise plans are very realistic even for the worst coach potato. I was dieting/excercising on my own and plateaued after a month - no weight loss for two weeks. I forgot I had this book, opened it up again, followed the plan, and BAM after two days I started loosing weight again. It works.

I purchased the book over 2 years ago and it collected dust on my bookshelf. Just a little over 3 weeks ago I decided to use the program. I have to say that IT WORKS! My clothes are much looser and I've lost 5lbs. give or take. The eating portion I'm tweaking but if I were to follow it precisely I'm sure I would've lost more. The book is worth the price and Jorge is very encouraging with the daily talks noted in the book. I highly recommend this book for anyone struggling with losing weight!

I have contemplated this book for about 2years, I hesitated to spend 12 dollars on yet another excercise plan that probably wouldn't work. I found the book on the bargain rack 2 1/2 weeks ago so I got it. I have not followed his eating plan, I was going to ease into that. Instead, I have cut back on carbs and tried to add more lean protein. I also allow myself one day per week to eat those things I was craving. This helps me stay on track the rest of the week. The excercise are fairly easy, I like the abilty to use different weights and the variety of muscle groups worked is great. By the end of the first week my husband said he thought I had lost weight, I said nah, it's only been a week. At the end of week 2 I had to agree that I lost at least 2 pounds. My goal is to lose 10 lbs. This is the first time that I have tried to loose weight and actually succeeded!
