As an RN I find this information easy for the lay person to understand and apply. My brother has used a lot of this information and his diabetes is very controlled (off medication) and he has no other diabetic related problems. This is a must read for all diabetes and their families. The large print book is so helpful!

I bought this book after I received high blood sugar and high cholesterol reports on a blood test. I decided to give the program a try during Lent (40 Days) and then have my blood work done to compare results. After doing this program my results were so much better that I have made it how I live and eat on a daily basis. It is a true life-changing way to eat and I recommend this book and program to anyone who wants to be healthy. By following Dr. Barnard's program I lost weight, my blood sugar and cholesterol counts lowered to the normal range and I have the energy and vitality to do activities that I love to do.

The diet in this book is a vegan version of the nearly-vegan, low-fat diabetes diet given by Nathan Pritikin (Live Longer Now, 1974); identical to the vegan diabetes diet of John McDougall, MD (The McDougall Plan, 1983); and a vegan version (without supplements) of the low-fat diabetes diet employed by Julian Whitaker, MD (Reversing Diabetes, 1987). All in all, the author's claims to originality don't hold any water.
The only things original in this book seem to be the results of A1c measurements, and comparison with the ADA diet (which has been known to be lacking for many years).
The author never mentions the highly successful diabetes treatment programs that have been in operation for the better part of 20-30 years at the Pritikin Longevity Center in Aventura FL, the Whitaker Wellness Institute in Newport Beach CA, and Dr. McDougall's Health and Medical Center in Santa Rosa CA. These three programs have successfully treated a combined total estimated at over 40,000 diabetes patients.
The author never mentions how he, personally, lionized the Pritikin Program in one of his previous books (The Power of Your Plate, 1995), and then forgot about it in the present book.
All in all, Dr. Barnard seems to want the reader to get the impression he invented the vegan diet and was the first to use it to treat diabetes. He does say, "A new idea," "We have completely redesigned the dietary approach to diabetes," ". . . an entirely new approach to diabetes," and "This program is truly a revolution." All claims that appear to be untrue and unwarranted.
Whichever diabetes book you decide to read, first read Prtikin's Live Longer Now, 1974. Used copies are available on Amazon.com. I bought a nice used hardback for $5.

I bought this book and sent it back immediately after reading in it that it advocates things such as drinking caffeine and eating high-sugar and high-trans fat foods while breastfeeding. It is disgusting to think that this book is so popular because the eating practices that this book preaches are so very wrong and especially harmful to your baby. I hate to say it, but it's with thinking like this that makes us Americans have all the health problems we do. I'd give this book no stars if I could.
Would work for ANYBODY!

I was gifted this book years ago and LOVE IT! I have a lot to lose and recently pulled this book out again. In the past I stopped short of my goal due to learning of other diets that sounded too good to be true. WHY stop something that is WORKING?!! This is a very healthy way to lose weight THAT WORKS~not just for breastfeeding Moms~and you won't be hungry, either. (((((HUGS))))) sandi
P.S. One thing I do with this book is write up a food journal to record my eating. In the front I copy the equation for my IBW and a list of foods (and the size of the serving) in each food group. I highlight the edges of these pages for easy reference. This way I can count food groups rather than calories, which is SO MUCH EASIER for me to keep track of!

This book has been very helpful for me to lose weight while breastfeeding. I had always been a petite 120 lb. woman until I got pregnant, and gained 43 lbs. I lost 17 lbs. the first month of breastfeeding after my son was born, but then I gained back 12 lbs. I was very frustrated because I have always been fit and healthy. I had been under the false pretense that I could now eat whatever I wanted and still lose weight while breastfeeding. Unfortunately this was not the case for me.
So, when I discovered this book about eating well and losing weight while breastfeeding I thought I would give it a chance. The thing I love most about this book is that it makes it easy to customize a healthy diet for your individual goals. It gives you a healthy weight range for all shapes and sizes of women. There are so many diets out there that lump everyone into the same category and just say how many calories to eat, or to cut out fat, or to cut out carbs. This book explains how to eat the correct number of calories for your individual body size without cutting out fat or carbs (but rather eating everything in moderation).
I also love the recipes! They are healthy and tasty. Imagine that. Quite contrary to the philosophy that if it tastes good, spit it out.
I recommend this book to anyone who really wants to make a life change and get back on track to a healthy weight while making sure to eat all of the healthy nutrients that your baby needs.

This cookbook has been one of my favorites ever since it first came out in 1990. Now 15 years later, it is ripped, worn, bent, curry stained and I'm buying a new copy. The recipes taste great, have greatly enhanced my family's health and vitality and been enjoyed by many friends. But it's not just a cookbook. The authors bless us with an Ayurvedic perspective on diet, constitution, lifestyle and body/mind/spirit healing and also clarify contemporary health issues related to sugar, dairy products and soyfoods in the light of ancient wisdom. This book is beautifully written, intelligently conceived and vibrates with wisdom and love.

If you have read Tibetan Ayurveda you will find a lot of similarities with this book. This book is Indian Ayurveda. The authors have made a small confusion between Neem leaves and curry leaves. This book will teach you about the ancient art of Ayurvedia and its benefits. You will have a nice understanding about various aspects of Indian Cooking, the ingredients and the way they make an extremely healthy food system, whether it is your breakfast, lunch or dinner. With all the additional information on Ayurveda, it will become extremely useful if you ever decide to do your own delicious cooking.
Since I have been on this diet, all the cravings for junk food have gone. I was someone who lived for sugar and now I do not want any of it. I use to crave coffee in the morning as well but realized I didn't want that wired up feeling & acid stomach. I switched over to a caffeine-free coffee substitute made from soyabeans I found on the net at www.S o y c o f f e e.c om. It so easy for someone to tell you to eat less, but if you are craving bad foods, eventually you will fail. In the first five days I was on this diet all the craving ceased and I was already 8 lbs down. If you were like me and cannot wait for your next slice of cake and at the same time really want to change your lifestyle, Try this.

This cookbook really explains why foods affect people differently and shows how, with delicious recipes, to balance yourself with many healthy Indian style dishes. So far I have tried the 15 min veg curry, Plain indian rice, Veg Barley soup, sesame sweeties and curried parsnips and carrots. Every recipe has been delicious - my son 11 is a big curry fan now. Americans definitely don't know how to use spices!! This book will show you how. I highly recommend it.

This is a fantastic cookbook for experienced cooks wanting to explore both Indian cooking as well as Ayurvedic cooking. I've learned a lot about the appropriate use and balance of traditional Indian spices.
However, if you are relatively new to cooking, you may find the recipes to be a bit difficult. They are pared down for those who are more intuitive with cooking, but you will not have a step-by-step guide on how to do each task, like you might find in grocery store recipe magazines or Betty Crocker cookbooks. I have also run across occasional omissions of ingredients in the directions, and some of the grain recipes call for too much water (way too much).
On the whole, this book has a great net benefit. In fact, it's the only book I've been using for the last 3 weeks. Indian grocers sell incredibly affordable pantry items, and the food is simply wonderful. Please give this book a try!

This book is the very first which transformed me from one who dislikes cooking into one that is eager to cook and learn more and more!!! I just simply cannot believe this is happening to me. I have never liked cooking. And it makes for the most thrilling reading too!!
Because of various health problems I was always advised to try different diets but never liked what I cooked. It was always the most boring task. This book has changed my attitude in the most profound ways, where I begin to perceive food not only as a source of nourishment but also a way to understand my own body's energetical needs and how to heal it. It is the most interesting fact to learn the connection between the food and my emotions. Through these quick, simple and most delicious recipes I am learning how to create foods which calm me when I need calming, ground me when I need grounding and cool or warm me depending on the season and the balance in my energy pattern. But it's not only that, I can even effect a positive emotional and digestive change in my husband through dishes that are meant for his type!
This book is slowly turning me from "cook hater" into "cook lover" and I cannot wait to try all of those recipes. The pumpkin or sweet potato halva recipe had us on our knees. It is sublime. The Indian tastes are simply like swimming in a deep ocean while the American cooking is more like swimming in a small and shallow pond. Why not jump in on the deeper side of life?

The information in this book is vague, hazy and totally non-motivating. Please, before you spend $$$ on Eating Mindfully purchase The Seven Secrets of Slim People. It is focussed, dense with wisdom and EXCELLENT exercises that develop your sane sense of how, why and when you eat so that you can lose that obsessive relationship you now have with food. Eating Mindfully will leave you treading water with no shore in sight.

What a wonderful, compassionate and helpful guide! I've run across this book in several places but I finally broke down and bought it when I saw it in Oprah Magazine. I'm glad I did. It was different than the other diet books I've bought. It was insightful, easy to read and positive. It helped me to understand why I mindlessly eat and gave a lot of helpful hints for eating in a more mindful, relaxed way. If you want a sample of what is inside this book before you buy it, check out Dr. Albers' website. It was a helpful resource for me and would be for anyone with eating issues.

This book is a collection of 46 brief observations on mindless eating. The observations are short, one or two pages, and include suggestions on how to turn mindless eating into mindfull eating. The observations themselves are diverse so every reader will most likely find several that relate to their specific problems with eating.
However, very little of the book is devoted to the fundamentals of "mindfullness". The book causally quotes the Buddhist origins of "mindfullness" but does not expand on the topic. This causes the observations to feel a little empty since they're constantly referring to a "mindfullness" concept that hasn't been meaningfully explained.
If you want a fundamental understanding of Buudhist "mindfulness" before you apply it to eating problems then I would read "The Zen of Eating" by Kabatznick. If you prefer a more 'thought for the day' type of format then this book is more appropriate.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I am a personal trainer and have purchased half a dozen of these for my clients to help them identify their reasons for why they eat when they are not hungry. The book has steps toward identifying emotional eating and then reducing and eliminating destructive patterns. I'd recommend the book.

My twin sister gave me a copy of the book "Life is Hard Food is Easy" a couple of years ago. This summer I finally had the chance to read it and I wish I had done so years ago. While I don't currently have a problem with emotional eating, I can tell that I did in the past. I am currently on a weight loss regimen and succeeding little by little. I know that the suggestions in this book will help me not only with the continued weight loss, but also with other areas of life.
One of the pieces of advice that stuck with me the most is to think of overweight/obesity as a condition that must be managed throughout life. This book has many practical suggestions that will help you succeed in managing your condition. I am grateful to Linda Spangle for sharing her story and for having the courage to give us a different view of the weight loss puzzle.

I am not even close to finishing this book and I already love it. It is nice to read about people who have been through the same things as I have. The tips and suggestions are not at all overwhelming and the book provides a very positive outlook for the future. If you are at all experiencing emotional eating for any reason, I would definitely give this book a try. Well worth it!

I read this book almost two years ago and am constantly recommending it to people. For some odd reason, I don't give this book all the credit for my weight loss. (I've lost 60 lbs and have kept it off for a year.) The book does have some concrete diet tips like suggesting to only eat 50 percent of your normal portion and only eating things that taste good. What I really liked about this book was that it looked at why you eat. I really believe this book changed the way I look at food. The book helps you to realize that a lot of eating is done to try and solve other problems. It is crazy, the day you reach into the fridge and ask yourself "Why am I eating?" and you recognize that it has nothing to do with hunger and close the door.

why I eat because I've never taken the time to stop and analyze the reasons. It's one thing to say I eat when I'm lonely, stressed, mad, etc. It's absolutely eye-opening to learn how to stop to recognize what's coming and have a plan for getting through the moment. This book has been very helpful to me.

This book is an excellent read! Immediately after I finished the book, I bought 3 additional copies for gifts for loved ones. The book explains why diabetes is accelerating out of control in our society today and it gives great advice on how to take preventative measures to avoid becoming a victim. Jack's story on how he reversed his own pre-diabetic situation is compelling and he offers great nutritional advice, hope and encouragement to those who want to "Stop Prediabetes Now.... The book is truthful, easy to read and medically sound. I enjoyed it cover to cover and will continue to enjoy it for years to come. Its on my favorite bookshelf for easy reference to the many healthy recipe suggestions. This book will be a positive life changing experience for every reader.

The book has great information and it is working for me. I have been reading it and changing what I eat. I feel better. It is too soon to tell about the weight, but I feel better and that says a great deal. The book is easy to read and has wonderful non-prescription information packed inside. It has information that I have read in other places, but being more up to date with vitamin issues helped me to learn more. My morning fasting blood sugar levels are down from 112-115 to 100-108 in just a week.

There are several good books for diabetics, and several more for people interested in a more natural diet. This is one of the few books, perhaps the only current book, specifically focused on prediabetes. That's important for people like me who found themselves to be prediabetic with no idea of what that word meant, and no outward signs that diabetes was a real threat. The book is smoothly written, clearly organized, and educational without being pedantic or academic. It's also very easy to integrate with diets like South Beach, the Abs Diet, and the slow-and-natural approach Michael Pollan advocates in In Defense of Food. If you're already trying to live a healthier lifestyle, this book will help you easily modify your life to accommodate your concerns about prediabetes. If you're just starting to learn about prediabetes and healthier options, this book is the place to begin. The authors claim that within just a couple of days of implementing changes you'll feel significantly better. I found that to be absolutely true and three months later it remains true. I would have paid $10,000 or more for that just three months ago, so the book has been a steal.

This book is excellent. Over the past 3 years my diet has been changing to a healthier eating style. Jordan's book confirmed everything that I've been doing is good for me. I've never felt better! I used to have neck and shoulder pain plus headaches all the time and I now believe it was due to some lack of nutrient in my diet and lack of water. I suffered with this for 15 years. Now, no more headaches and no more pain! I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to live and eat healthier.

Yes, you can buy just the guide, but you'll miss out on so much of the "WHY". I say, buy both the guide and the Maker's Diet. The cost is really very low. I suffer from multiple health problems, including severe neurological symptoms that affect my ability to function and work, chemical intolerance, severe fatigue, and a host of female problems including a strong possibility of uterine cancer (5 symptoms) but a negative biopsy. I just finished reading the Maker's Diet for the 2nd time. This is a GREAT book. I have tried every diet out there, including South Beach, Blood type, Veganism, you name it. Raw foodism worked, but I felt protein starved all of the time. This diet is working from day one and my symptoms are much improved. You must take the HSO's! I am convinced it is the combo of diet plus HSO and green food supplementation that is so important. So, don't listen to the whiners. The low cost of these two books could save you thousands in health care costs.

It gave me the opportunity to understand the motivation and the "why" behind the food which helps me make it personal in my life. I recommend this to anyone wanting more energy and a healthier lifestyle. The shoppers guide is easy to read, small enough to take to the grocery store and thorough. I also loved the recipies.

This is the best source of blended juice recipes I've found yet, easy to use and make. Of course the author is famous for curing all types of diseases. I have been diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and have been drinking blended juices since I was discharged from a weeks hospital stay. At my 6 week check-up the doctor said I was doing very, very well with a tone of amazement in his voice. He, nor any gastrointerologis, doesn't believe diet has anything to do with this disease, but it does and I will cure it and they will ask me how when they perform a colonoscopy next and I will share my treatment with them. Perhaps if more do this then more doctors will realize the benefits of raw/living eating and start recommending this instead of perscription drugs that do more harm to other vital organs than good! I don't care to live the rest of my life on medications, they just don't taste as good as blended juices or lovely vegetables!

I would like to tell everyone that this little book was the best investment I could have possibly made. Forget about counting calories,
carbs, fats or anything else. If you follow these simple instructions you will definitely loose weight and you will wonder how anything so simple could be so easy and practical. You will be able to loose weight regardless of what else is going on in your life because the tools you need will be ingrained into your everyday habits and you will not even have to think about what you should do! I could not be more pleased, and I have already lost 8 lbs. after following this program for only 4 weeks! I don't think you will be sorry if you try this!

The book as well as the web site are a revelation in thinking about food and the patterns we follow when consuming them. The whole idea is so simple that most would think it doesn't work, but they would be wrong. Its not a diet that you go on for a week or two to drop that last 10 pounds before your birthday/wedding/etc. Its a way to eat for life and something you can actually stick with for the long haul. I highly recommend this book and have told my family and friends to give it a try.

The No S Diet takes an interesting approach to fat loss. First, while many diets claim to advocate/be the authentic diets of our ancient anscestors, who were lean and much healthier. No S asserts that our RECENT anscestors were lean and healthy, and targets the bad habits and other problems that have recently allowed us to become lardy. Engels uses FDA and other historical data to show how (permasnacking, too much sugar, too many oversized portions) and when (within the last 50 years) we went wrong, and the No S Diet is simply a toolkit to turn back the clock as necessary. Beyond this, the diet is arranged to be sustainable through life. In No S, there are no evil macronutrients, so you can eat with your family and friends without friction or special accomodations for you. Importantly, the diet assumes that you are a rational, thinking person who is able to improve yourself. If you are unsure as to whether you want to fork out for the book, just try going to the website and looking around.

I'm glad I found the No S Diet just after I realized that the whole idea of "restricting" and "counting" didn't work for long term weight loss & manteinance. I 'discovered' the nosdiet website and after I read it, finally said to myself: "this is the way to eat to not worry anymore about dieting". Since then, I can now focus on other more important and fun things in life.
I ordered this book just as a support for the nosdiet website, because I already knew all the info. As other reviewers have said, you don't really need the book to lose the weight, just follow the no snacks, no sweets, no seconds advice and you're done.
However, the book serves as a big FAQ that will save you many weeks (or months) of reading into the diet message boards. So for the price, if you're new to this system, this is gold.
Anyways, at first you will feel free, you will throw away all the other diet books you've bought (even the ones that "promise" they will be your 'new lifestyle for life'), and you will be very enthusiastic about this new way of seeing your relationship with food. However, after the first weeks, If you're the typical diet-addict, you may get disappointed. Why? you may ask. Simple: the weight loss is not 'fast' as the more commercial diets you're used to hear about. The weight loss is slow, but seady, and sustainable for life. You must have patience and start paying attention to your new habits (because as the author says, this is a mental fix, not a dietary one). You have to keep going at it looking it like a long-term goal, not a "lose 20 pounds for next summer" approach.
Personally, the best thing about No S Diet is that it is doable. I've never been able to "follow" a diet for a few months without dropping it (it is not a matter of willpower, really), but since I found NoS (not really a diet per se), I've been eating this way for 2 years. I was getting fat when I started doing it (after a Christmas binge-festival), then I lost around 20 pounds in the last 12 months after I started exercising, and I'm now at a healthy weight. I KNOW I can to this forever, and even without thinking about "doing" it. It's automatic. By the way, I also suggest the "shovelglove" invention by the same author, if you don't know what kind of exercise to do, in addition to walking.
So, if you are the kind of person who didn't have a wise grandma that taught you "wait until dinner to eat" or "ice creams are for sundays", this is what you need. This is TRULY the last & only "how to eat" book, for everyone.

A COMMON SENSE APPROACH

I was curious about this newly-popular book since it is based more on when you eat than what you eat, which makes it somewhat similar to The 3:00 PM Secret. The No S Diet is simple and elegant, having just 3 rules - No Snacks - No Sweets - No Second helpings. These rules apply except on days that start with "S", namely, Saturdays, Sundays, and Special days, where "Special" days are defined as birthdays, holidays, and sick days. The key rule as described by the author is "no snacks", and he defines snacks as anything you eat between meals. In other words, don't eat between meals - period - except on S days.
The author criticizes other diet books, which seems unnecessary, though he is clearly trying to distinguish himself and his ideas. He says, for example, forbidden-foods diets are "patent nonsense" and "pseudoscientific". He continues with calorie-counting diets stating they "require you to be a full time calorie accountant" and "...funny that these diets masquerade as scientific..." and so on. Then, he tells you why his diet so much better: "Because it is simple, sustainable, and you aren't really depriving yourself of anything." He says we are fat because of "excess" - we simply eat too much!
The author advocates eating healthy meals and making them count (nutritionally). He is convinced that snacking is what makes Americans fat, suggesting that obesity rates correlate with the number of calories consumed through snacking. He supports this idea by citing that the French snack on average less than once a day compared to Americans three times per day, and that the Chinese barely snack at all. He also says obesity has increased with the increased rate of snacking. While snacking may be a factor in why Americans are obese, it's not likely that it is the only cause.
He does not provide food lists, recipes, or exercises, and says his diet can be used in conjunction with other diets. He does not, however, appear to be a fan of low-carb diets.

This is an interesting book with some research and stats. It has a common-sense approach that should resonate with many readers. I agree with the author about the problems of following diets with draconian meal plans. We are all adults and should be able to determine whether we are overeating during meals by watching the scale. This approach should be an effective method for many people and the book is worth reading. I also recommend THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams, The Alternate-Day Diet, and The 2007 Second Expert Report, Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective..

Rubin seems to advocate a Kosher diet - there is nothing wrong with the cloven hoof in modern times - all animals raised for food today are "fed" feed - like corn or pellets - swine do not forage for food in farmer browns trash - nor are they fed trash, ( except of course - China where all factory farmed animal are fed trash and even human fecal matter). A better book is eat right for your type - this book promotes a kosher diet ( what would you expect from someone named Rubin and a publisher name siloam (IE old Jersulam)) & the latest trends in health ..nothing new here .. except it heavily hawks his outrageously priced products - his green drink "perfect food" says "tastes great" - are you kidding ? this stuff tastes like any barley grass green drink - horrid .. these books are being given away everywhere - I hope nobody has actually bought this book ..

Nothing new here except for Fucoxanthin. Stay away from processed foods, sugars, and so on. I've read the book, generally followed the diet, taken the supplements, and consistently feel much better (energy, focus, mood, vitality and so on) than when I started. We cheat here and there, so the weight hasn't fallen off. The supplements are super and reasonably priced. We're a single income household of 8, so we know about budgeting and food cost. We generally spend about the same as before because the junk costs just as much and doesn't do the jobs of nourishment and replenishment. We have heartily embraced a way to eat better and care for our health. We're on fewer prescriptions, get sick less. This is worth the read. One thing's for sure, nothing will work if we don't really want it to work. This program does work, surely like many others. We've picked a path and are staying on it. We happen to like this one a lot.

Given Mr. Rubin's civil judgement against him and Garden of Life a couple of years ago, this book's appearance is no surprise - particularly since it is a blatant advertisement for Garden of Life products. While I acknowledge that eating closer to the way nature made it is certainly better for my health, there are aspects of Mr. Rubin's plan in this book which ended up making me feel worse and I believe were detrimental to my health. I am speaking of the section on the 10-day cleanse he advocates 4 times per year. I decided to give this a try about one month ago. According to the testimonials in the book and by Mr. Rubin's own account, after three days I should have noticed an improvement in the way I feel. I followed his spring cleanse plan to the letter. I had weighed myself the day I started the cleanse because according to Mr. Rubin, this plan jumpstarts your weight loss and most people lose several pounds during the cleanse period. I made it through 4 days before realizing I could not continue because not only was I extremely weak and light-headed, my abdomen was tender to the touch and I hadn't had a bowel movement in all of the four days. Prior to starting this, I had no problems in this area. By the fourth day, I was so sick, I decided to stop. It has taken almost a full month in order to get my bowel functioning back to normal. My metabolism completely slowed down during this cleanse so that I lost not 1 pound - I was exactly the same weight as when I began. And the hunger pangs were elevated. The products he advocates for the cleanse did nothing for me except waste $20 and throw off my whole system. As for the rest of the products he advocates, check out the prices of the stuff - for two people to take the supplements he recommends for one month, it costs several hundred dollars. No one can afford this long term unless they are well to do. This is a rip off plain and simple. Mr. Rubin appears to be interested in making up the millions he lost in the judgement against him. Figure it out... if every person who gets this book tries even once the supplements he recommends, then Mr. Rubin and Garden of Life will have no problem making up the lost income and most likely will and have profited from it. Don't buy this book!
