This is an absolute must for anyone who needs a quick, yet thorough guide to the many ways gluten-free living affects your life and the lives of those around you. The recipes in it are great, the helpful tips are priceless, and Lowell's sense of humor and understanding is really refreshing. I bought a copy for my grandmother, who at almost 80, has finally acknowledged the extent of how gluten has affected her. I have recommended it to co-workers who are gluten intolerant, and to folks I've encountered who have family members who are celiacs, and need help understanding how to deal with it. Also a huge help in understanding how to take control of your treatment and get the best care possible from your doctors!

On the whole, this is a decent book. There is some very practical advice for dealing with celiac disease in a world where most people have never heard of such thing. Some very tasty recipes are listed. But the medical inaccuracies made me wonder how thoroughly the author researched her information before publishing it as a "bible" for all to take as the gospel truth.

Also, I found her attitude to be a bit testy in some parts. For example, the author says that if you're eating at the house of a friend or family member and they forget to make gluten free accommodations for you that it's no accident. And then she goes on to give several sharp tongued comebacks that you might want to try. I really don't feel as though when people forget to make a dish without wheat that it was malicious, and they truly did just forget. This was not the only instance. There were several other parts of this book where I noticed a defensive attitude, as well demanding. Don't get me wrong, I have definitely had to learn to stand up for myself when asking what ingredients are in a dish in restaurants and other situations. But maybe showing a little grace and less attitude would make situations work out better?

The many ideas given (eat the inside of sandwiches, eat the top off of canapes, avoid the crust) can give a true celiac serious consequences. Sometimes, a person can eat gluten with no obvious side effects but do great "silent damage" to one's intestines. There are complications to celiac disease such as refractory sprue and collagenous sprue. I have these complications due to not being strict enough when following the gluten free diet.

I always have trouble deciding what my kids should have to eat in their lunch boxes. I got this book and had them mark the pages that seemed like something they would like to try. Then we tried those choices before sending them to school. This worked really well and the kids enjoy having something new in their lunches.

Wonderful inspiration for healthier lunches

I picked up this little book because my kids were so sick of PB&J or tuna sandwiches they were threatening to riot. I've also decided to make a change in our entire family's diet to a more healthful way of eating, especially since two of us could stand to lose some weight and my son has ADHD.

What some others found to be "weird", I actually found to be very inspiring. Tzatziki might sound weird or exotic at first glance, but if you bother to actually read the description, it is simply a delicious Greek yogurt dip found in any Greek restaurant, and my kids both love it! Frankly, I would have been very disappointed if there weren't some recipes in here that sound a little different and new -- what good would a cookbook be if it just contained the same ol', same ol' that my family is familiar and bored with. I'm excited at the idea of expanding my kids' palates and introducing them to new foods and tastes they haven't experienced before so that they enjoy a wide variety of foods and don't turn into picky adults.

Kids can be surprisingly adventurous eaters if they are introduced to a variety of healthy foods early on, and this cookbook contains a lot of excellent starter recipes to get them going. My kids will be so relieved to see some new and exciting foods in their lunchboxes this year! I also liked that many of the recipes would make perfect after-school snacks without much trouble at all -- a welcome relief from the prepackaged crackers and snacks we had come to rely on.

By the way, I also like the way the book is laid out -- it is extremely attractive and easy to read, and for each and every recipe, the prep times are given, as are serving suggestions and health benefits of the specific ingredients for that recipe! While there aren't photographs for ALL the recipes, there are plenty, and they all look delicious.

Great variety for the whole family

While I do agree that this book may not be for the pickiest of eaters, it has a great variety of tasty recipes that the whole family can enjoy. Also given are some sample menus for special diets and preparation times for recipes. One thing I particularly like about this book is that it also has recommendations for accompaniments to the recipes. All of the recipes are healthy and tasty, and while the variety may be experimental for some, you never know, you might get to enjoy something new!

This books cover is deceiving!

I bought this book trying to think of ideas my kids would like in their lunches besides the daily sandwich and apple. What I got in this book was quite a surprise. Unless your kids like really weird dishes, such as 'tzatziki' or 'vegi-samosas' your kids will probably not eat 1/4 of this stuff. Really this book offers maybe 10 good ideas, out of the 100 it promises. Don't waste your money!!!

I recommend

If your tired of hotdogs and chicken nuggets like we were, and want to start fixing healthy lunches,...this is a very good cookbook. The recipes are very simple, and the food is very healthy. The only downfall I would say is that even though the food is great you may have a hard time with picky eaters. For example I could not get mine to eat Hummus or Tabboule. Thier are a few "wierd" ingredients but most recipes don't require very many ingredients. Btw, I make lunches for my hubby with this book too.

The book is short because Barnard has spared us anecdotes, padding, and lengthy but irrelevant personal testimony. This book gets down to brass tacks immediately, is clearly presented, and makes total sense. I'm impressed not only by the book but also by the success of the method and its common-sense simplicity. Highly recommended.

I make no secret that the 25 pound weight loss I experienced without counting a single calorie or EVER being hungry (cuz humans are not supposed to be hungry if they can eat right) came from reading and following this book. It's easy, cheap, and you feel great! Much easier than a bi-pass (geriatric or cardiac), insulin or amputation for diabetes, and chemo for cancer...diseases that can be caused and/or worsened by obesity. This book, and the Maximum Weight Loss Plan by Dr. John McDougall are the best kept secrets, IMHO. These docs aren't on the take from any company or industry and are sincere about helping hundreds of thousands over the years, for free because they care. They have no money-guzzling supplements or products or scams. Have seen many lose incredible amounts of weight using these two books. Even if you do not have a "weight problem," this book deserves a place on every person's bookshelf. The concepts and ideas in this book are not new, although they will certainly be new to many; some may even find them "radical." Dr. Barnard advocates a vegetarian diet in order to stay healthy and at a desirable weight. If you follow the advice in this book, you will undoubtedly lose weight and look and feel MUCH better than you ever have. The truth is that most people eat food that does not promote health or a good weight. Dr. Barnard shows you how you can eat foods that are good for you, foods that will make you feel good, and in the process, you will lose weight and keep it off. This is not a "diet" in the sense that you must restrict your calories. This is a diet in the sense that you make intelligent, sensible food choices, EAT AS MUCH AS YOU WANT, and lose weight without ever feeling hungry. It's true! After eating the way that Dr. Barnard recommends in this book (no animal products), I lost ten pounds in several weeks, and I have kept those pounds off, without ever feeling hungry. I eat as much as I want, and I don't gain weight. Try it out for yourself, and see that it works. If you don't see a change after trying this book out, write me an email and tell me what happened. I have many good tips for eating this way.

I purchased this book in paperback and have used it so much that I now have it in hardcover. Some of the recipes needed tweaking, but several of them are fine just as they are. Many of the recipes are made for convenience: they use canned vegggies, perdue short-cuts chicken, etc. If you cannot quite deal with using canned or frozen veggies, etc., this book would not be for you. I found that the recipes enhanced the ingredients with the spices, so I was actually able to make a "cassoulet" with canned carrots and enjoy it. Some of the recipes are not as fast as you might think, but overall, I have been happy to try to make fast and healthy meals with this book.

I was soooo looking forward to the arrival of this book but soooo disappointed when it arrived. It is a typical dime a dozen healthy recipe book for "foodies". I was looking for and expected some really quick and uncomplicated ideas for eating in the Zone. I have a book that does this much better by Joyce & Gene Daoust called 40-30-30 Fat Burning Nutrition "The Zone Made Easy". It was published in 1996 but hits the target much closer if you are looking for quick and uncomplicated ideas for eating in the Zone.

Joy Bauer's book was a disappointment. Very short on recipes and hum-drum
on subjects to be addressed. High blood pressure and kidney disease are
greater concerns than healthy teeth and skin.
One other reviewer commented on repetitive material and I agree. The
book was repetitive and not what I was hoping for. I would have liked
to see far more food cure type recipes versus restatements similar
to other books. The organization and flow of material wasn't
as strong as I was hoping for. I bought it on sale for $6.99 plus
postage and felt as though I wasted my money.

The book has only 50 recipes and most of them call for ginger or celery or parsley that I hate. I could find only 3-4 recipes that sounded good to me. I saw the book in a store and liked that it had nutrition information for juices. Not every book has that. But the recipes themselves suck if you do not like ginger or celery.

Good book but recommends Juicers no longer available
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-08
The book is good and lots of easy recipes and great tips on how to prepare things to be juiced. The only problem is the book was written quite a long time ago and the juicers he recommends have long been discontinued. I researched other juicers by the same brand names of the ones he liked, but the on-line reviews of other juicers from those very same companies were often quite bad. Apparently companies who make juicers occasionally hit the jackpot and make a fantastic model once in a while, but their other models are not very good. Then, of course, as all companies do, they "improve" the fantastic model and mess it up completely, and it ends up being not very good at all. Why companies feel compelled to change a very good thing just for the heck of it I don't know, but many products are ruined after a couple years by being discontinued and replaced with a new model that is not half as good. So the book is very good to learn about juicing, but you're on your own to find a current, good brand of juicer.

Love the Book--and Still Eat Meat, etc; great recipes, nutritional info

Review Date: 2005-07-02
Hey--I am not a vegetarian, but sure appreciated this book for its multiple qualities and useful info:
a. recipes--main reason I got, combo ones as well as those under individual fruits and vegetables: even teenage son likes "Cruciferous Surprise" (even has broccoli and cabbage, and the surprise ingredient which "soothes" the flavor), which tastes better than its green color, and "Better Red than Dead" (carrot, beet and sweet potato) builds up sun protection, etcetc.. innovative, tasty
b. fruit and vegetable individual listings, such as carrots, apple, broccoli, listing nutritional components, vitamins, calories, benefits, as well as good tasty combinations for each
c. benefits of juicing, nutritional primer/info--this may be where some other readers were left cold, as they did not embrace what they perceived as author's vegetarian perspective/agenda. It is handy to read about why juicing (in combination with other food consumption) can be more beneficial than just munching raw or cooked veggies. Well, I am not a vegetarian, and sure still like meat and chocolate!...but one can take what one wants from the book, as in other matters in life. There is a section on juice fasting, as well, for those interested.
Of the several juicing books I had, I wound up actually using this repeatedly, and have given several copies, new and used when I can find them, away over the past couple of years.

Great Information but Buyer Beware

Review Date: 2008-06-16
I love this book. Then again, I love most of the books that I have on juicing. What I like most is the nutritional information presented on the fruits and vegetables in here. I had a limited palate for fruits and vegetables before I ever started juicing. Then I read a Christian health book that promoted juicing and detoxification. I did a serious detox program along with juicing and had dramatic results a couple of years ago. It really made me realize that I was neglecting my health by neglecting nutrition. Later I purchased this book because I wanted more recipes. This book has about 50 and I've tried about 30 of them. What I love about this juicing book is that I can find all of the ingredients where I live. Other juicing books like Gary Null's sound great, but I can't find half of the ingredients he lists. The other less than favorable reviews are also correct in stating that this author slants toward a vegetarian lifestyle and organic fruits and vegetables. Another reviewer also pointed out that several recipes call for ginger and celery which is also true. But you could easily substitute fennel for celery and something else for ginger or don't add the ginger. I am not a vegan but I have no problem with the author's views on those issues. I just wanted to learn more about what I was actually juicing, and the information presented in this book along with a few others, convinced me that juicing is definitely worth the time and investment for good health. I'm not a health nut but I don't trust the quick fix vitamin industry. As someone who is 40 years old, I cannot absorb many vitamins in pill form so I rely on juicing when I feel sluggish or depressed and it always helps me. The key for me having a variety of recipes available so I don't get bored. If you want to incorporate juicing into your lifestyle, I very much doubt that just one juicing book will address all of your problems or issues or have every favorite recipe. That is why I advocate buying more than one book on the subject. Also, look up recipes on the Internet and try those first before you invest in some books. And when you buy the books, either buy them brand new so you can return them if you don't like them, or buy them used from others really cheap.

I am a beginner to this program (bought it a few weeks ago) and have just started using the program. I have given three stars because it was a very informative book for which a lot (not all) of the concepts make a lot of sense.

I cant give it more or less (yet) because I have just started using the program. I wont judge before I try it. which is what I advise to everyone. open yourself up and forget about your opinion use something and if it doesnt work for you then you actually can state why it is so bad. Not because you read it and felt like stating some other facts.

anyways, ill post back in a few months and honestly state a fact of whether it worked or not for me.

I don't know how long ago I bought this book, but I forgot about it, and recently I saw an article about Dorian Yates in a magazine and he was talking about how he adapted his style from Mike Mentzer. So, I was looking for a Mike Mentzer book at the store when I remembered I had bought this one and that it must be somewhere mixed in with all my other books. So, I wetn home and found it.

Much of the book just seems to be Darden's biased opinions: his love of Arthur Jones, his bashing of Arnold and the Mentzers, etc. If you want a book that just talks about HIT training, then you don't want this one. It's not worth the money. You can learn just as much about HIT training by asking on any messageboard that discusses bodybuilding.

You want me to review a book I have YET TO RECEIVE, it takes 2-6 business days to get my book, today is the 6th day and I checked my mail - no books. I bought 3 books (each book from a different amazon seller), so far I have one book which I received promptly and paid 1 penny for but THIS BOOK - which cost me $7.50 has yet to show up, much less the other book from another seller for .99. They took my money, the order is complete and there is NO FED EX DELIVERY EMAIL OR ACTIVITY OF ANY KIND, but all 3 orders show COMPLETE, according to Amazon rules, I have to wait until 04/11 (5 days after final due date) to contact the seller and either get my book or a refund, so be it. I want a refund for the full amount and I'll try buying this same book from someone else on amazon...complete waste of my time! Maybe its a good book, I'll never know. It's not about the money, its about the time I've wasted when I have other things to be concerned with. I but things from Amazon all the time, I never have this problem. Do yourself a favor and buy the book from someone else.

I bought this book once and read through it and hi-lighted important parts. I went to the gym and implemented my knowledge and ate healthy . I ate lots of red meat and BBQ food. After just 3 months I had a huge difference. No steroids or drugs. Simply hard work and this book and I was really finally getting some where. This book is based off of proven research and test's and is great to begin with and learn everything you will ever need to know. I was amazed at how many people were in the gym wasting their time with bad posture and work outs. I passed many of them in size, strength and endurance in only 3 months and they had been at it for many more. Plus with the quality of the muscle mass I could out perform often bigger weight lifters with my more quality muscle mass. I passed it on to some one else. This book is effective and will get you results and keep you from getting frustrated because you wont waste your time and you will see results fairly soon . Keep a log containing dates, excercise, reps, and weight and see how you go up in weight in only a few weeks. If you can agree that gorilla's are strong than you can see where Ellington got his data from. It simply works and is all you need to know . I bought it again and may give this copy to a dedicated person who could use it . I really liked this book .

I am not saying that the techniques don't work, but only buy this book if you know you will fully commit yourself to training in a systematical way. These techniques require a range certain training exercises where you sometimes need a spotter in order to do them. Buy with caution

I grew up on the recipes from this book, so I admit that my opinion may be biased by the fact that, to me, many of the recipes in here are comfort foods. Still, this book remains simply one of the best basic vegetarian cookbooks out there. I agree that the preaching at the front gets a little old, and I have honestly never gotten through all of it, but the intention of this book is to teach new and beginning vegetarians how to cook healthy, protein filled vegetarian meals. Yes, the front matter is outdated and yes, she does stand on her soapbox for a long time, but this is easily skipped and reading this part has little to nothing to do with cooking the recipes that come after. And, in that capacity it works well. It provides easy, fully developed recipes that are simple to follow even for the unexperienced cook and have complete protein included. Like any cookbook there are recipes in here that are horrible, and then there are some that are amazing. I have brought the book to the attention of many friends who were new vegetarians over the years, and they have all been increadibly thankful for some guidence on how to cook something other than plain tofu. If you are just starting out, this is a great book to start with.

This is still a great cookbook with helpful ideas for creating delicious and nutritious meals. I love their blueberry cobbler recipe and still use it at least once a month.

This book was so refreshing to read in a world where it seems 95% of raw foodist think the ONLY way is vegetarian or vegan!!! Yeah Carol! A organic, raw diet with raw dairy and raw beef is definitely the way to go!

After making several of these recipes I have been much impressed. The snacks and desserts are wonderful. I didn't care for the cracker recipes, but I have yet to find a raw cracker recipe I like. Dispite that, this has been a book who's recipes I have shared with others.

this second book by Carol ALt is another winner. What I like the best is that she has a few recipes ny many different raw chefs and friends. These types of books (like the The Complete Book of Raw Foods) have people's best recipes. My favorite recipes that I've tried so far in the book are Terra Bella Cafe's veggie kebabs- they were awesome, and their Avo-Corn stuffed tomatoes.

This book is extremely creative, unlike most raw food recipe books that seem to be too basic and tasteless.
She has a gourmet touch with enough interesting combinations of seasonings to take it out of the ordinary.

This is a book that is a must for all young girls to see where true beauty comes from!

I bought this book since everyone was giving it 5 stars. The first part of the book was o.k., but then, it got into way too much detail. I found the descriptions of the cells, lymphs and technical names for every enzyme pretty boring. I had to make myself finish reading it. Buy it if you want to read every detail of the immune system. If you are like me and need something more basic, look on.

The book is an excellent choice for anyone interest in the subject. I've bought and read 4 books on this subject (Complete Candida Yeast Guidebook by Jeanne Marie Martin, The Candida Albicans Yeast Free Cookbook by Pat Connolly, The Yeast Connection Cookbook by William Crook) but this one is the most conscise and yet it's offering all the answers. Dr. Murray offers a lot of suggestions on the diet and natural supplements that are essential for good health and boosting up an immune system. Medicine alone did not help me but combining the medicine with the diet recommendations found in this book showed results.

The best book I have seen on this subject..

Although this book is small if you look at the others closely they are full of general health info that is used to bulk them up to (ahem) 'Encyclopedic' proportions. Stop eating all simple sugars including lactose, take some healing herbs, prepare to feel like crap for several weeks while WWIII rages inside your body. Two or three months later you feel amazing!! So far I've lost 20 pounds of fat and only need 6 hours sleep instead of my usual 11. Pretty much a miracle. Try it.

Boring!

This book was so dry and so boring. It was very clinical. I was hoping for a list of the sypmtoms of candidiasis and some helpful suggestions on how to control the condition. Most of the book was not helpful or useful to me.
