A companion to "The Best Life Diet," this handy, spiral bound book makes reaching your goals even easier.

The journal starts out with you writing down your vitals stats such as your weight, blood glucose, cholesterol, and so on. There are before and after sections on the same page so you can see if you ultimately reach your goals.

The book moves on to cover the goals of the three phases (readers of the book will already be familiar with these) and then divides into three parts- a section of similar pages for phase one, a section of similar pages for phase two, and a section of similar pages for phase three.

The phase one pages have you enter the date at the top of the page and then rate your activity level. Then follows 6 questions you answer at the end of each day, such as "did you eat at least three meals and at least one snack including a nutritional breakfast?" Other questions are about things such as your water and vitamin intake.

The page then ends with a place for you to enter aerobic exercise data and also includes a strengthening "grid" for you to document your reps, sets, etc. Phase 2 and 3 pages are the same, except that they have hunger scales included at the bottom of each page.

A must-have companion for those who are trying "The Best Life Diet," I found that its best strength is that it keeps you focused on reaching the right goals. Also recommend The Sixty-Second Motivator if you need additional motivation to reach your fitness goals. Good Luck!

Adding God to your weight loss equation!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-11
I had tried eating Low Fat, Counting Calories and Spark People but found that I had done all of these things in my own power without bringing God into the equation! The pendulum would swing from extreme control over what I ate and exercise to binging and loss of self control. How could I as a Christian leave God out and not ask for His guidance and strength??? It seems such a evident idea but I had left GOD out of my dieting and did it in my own strength. Since I didn't have my Thin Within book yet I started visiting the forums for Thin Within (link listed at end of review) and applying the principles in the book and lost 9 pounds in 15 days! Incredible!

The authors do not bring glory to themselves- all glory belongs to GOD! He is the author and finisher of our faith! They urge you to seek God and ask God to help you eat when your stomach is empty and stop eating when you are simply satisfied. The focus is NOT on a diet, tricks, or gimmick but on listening to your body and what God would have you to do! You can eat NORMAL THINGS and say goodbye to diet food!

About 5 years ago I followed along with this book and lost about 15 pounds without really dieting. Then I moved overseas, had my 3rd baby, started homeschooling, my husband deployed, and well... the weight has crept back on. I can't find my old copy, so I had to order another. Dieting does not work for me because I have deeper issues, such as turning to food as a source of comfort in times of stress. I remember this book helped me to work through these before. I suppose when I get very stressed or really busy, I tend to relapse... so I need to work through this one again and lose those 15 pounds. This is not a book for those seeking to educate themselves on how to follow a proper diet. This is not a gimmick diet or plan. If you turn to food for reasons other than hunger, this book addresses why we do that and how to replace that 'inner hunger' with God, our daily bread. I would appreciate it if this book were not so religious, though I am a Bible-believing Christian. I remember it being a little over-loaded with verses, a little too preachy... but it helped me then and I hope it will help me again now. The main thing is to turn away from food if you are not hungry, turn to the Lord. This is a book for Christians to use as a stepping stone...for those of us who need it. And at this stressful time in my life, I do.

Great introduction to pranayama by reviewer who delivers workshops on these types of topics

Review Date: 2007-03-13
I am a personal growth coach who is educated in biology, biochemistry, biofeedback and psychology. I give workshops on stress management, coach executives on this topic and also do workhshops that combine these techniques with biofeedback. This gives you some background on me and my perspective that I'm writing this review from.

As someone who works with these techniques and sees the results via biofeedback with myself and others, I highly recommend this very inexpensive book as a brief overview and introduction to the topic. The author covers a lot of ground in a small space and the instructions are clear and simple.

If you practice these exercises as they are explained, they will cause effects in your physiology. Regulation of the breath is very tied to the nervous system and to heart rate variability which correlates with resilience. If you buy this book and get serious about a practice, I would pick up some additional material to augment this text such as the SCIENCE OF BREATH and THE LIGHT ON PRANAYAMA. The first of these is a more Western explanation by a respected yoga institute and the second is a classic text with a lot of detail.

I also highly recommend getting a home biofeedback program such as FreezeFramer or Healing Rhythms. You can read the descriptions of each and determine what is best for your needs. However, this additional step will really heighten your awareness and help you to develop more control over your internal states.

Valuable Book

Instead of wasting money on Iyengar's books, this is safer, simple way of doing PRANAYAMA. This book is worth it's weight in gold.

Alternet Nostril Breathing is the best for weight loss, however Ujjaini works, too, but little slowly.

Following are two techniques:
Alternate Nostril Breathing
(Anulom Vilom Pranayama with no breath retention) This pranayama (control breathing) is done with alternate breathing from the left and right nostrils for cleansing of Nadis. (energy meridians). Seated in a convenient posture, start off with slow inhalation from the left nostril first by closing the right nostril with the middle of right hand thumb ,and after fully filling the lungs, (not the belly breathing) breathe out slowly from the right nostril by closing the left nostril with the two ( left hand middle and ring) fingers. Now breathe in from the right nostril by closing the left nostril in the above manner and exhale from the left nostril by closing the right nostril with the right thumb. It completes one cycle. Do this for three minutes for two months then gradually increase to 5 minutes.

Do it two hour after eating or drinking. (Do it on empty-stomach) Do not eat for 15 minute after you are done. Better to lie down for five minutes after you are done. If you limit practice to maximum of five minutes, it will be the best.

The very first sign you will experience is lightness in the body and clearer thinking.

The practice of this breathing for a period of three to four months can open up thirty to forty percent of the heart arteries' blockages. This pranayama alleviates all the diseases of the body, leads to the state of joy, enthusiasm for living , fearlessness, peace of mind and deep meditation.

Benefits:
-Hair will regrow within two months of practice.
-Body will go to it's ideal weight by itself.
-Face becomes bright and luminous.
-Lost vision will return.
-Removes fear/anxiety of any kind.
- Aligns both hemisphere of the brain for full brain functionality
- Creates a deeper sense of well-being and harmony
- Helps alleviate migraines and headaches and frazzled states of being
- Works great in situations where you find yourself anxious, board and need grounding
-Blockages in the arteries of the heart are removed and the arteries become clean, making circulation unimpeded.

Ujjayi Pranayama

1. You can do this sitting, standing or walking anywhere anytime.

2. Inhale slowly through both nostrils, keeping the throat slightly constricted so as to make a gentle sound that will help you to feel the breath in the throat. The sound will remind you of ocean waves washing up the beach. Concentrate on the feeling of the breath moving in and out through the throat.

3. During inhalation do not allow abdomen to bulge out, let the chest expand.

4. After completing inhalation slowly exhale. (Either by both nostrils or by left nostril) During exhalation chest should go inside and abdomen should remain steady.

Remember :-

1. While doing Ujjiayi air should touch the throat.

2. Breath must be mentally locked in chest area. (Do not do belly breathing)

3. After practicing it for few days, knowing your limitations, keep the ratio between inhalation and exhalation 1 : 2.

4. In easy Ujjiayi Pranayama, inhalation and exhalation can be practiced by both the nostrils.

Benefits:
This simple practice has a subtle influence on the whole body. It calms the mind and has a soothing effect on the nervous system. Ujjayi is very useful for people with high blood pressure as it slows down the heartbeat. It has subtle effects on the flow of life force in the astral (energy) body and helps you to be aware of its movement within the sushumna (astral spine).

Excellent.

This is a great little book for those wanting to learn more about the different types of breathing associated with yoga. The author provides simple, straightforward instruction on various yogic breathing styles, including Ujjayi and Alternate Nostril Breathing. He also talks about how to incorporate breathing into both your yoga practice and your daily life. An excellent reference book, especially for those who feel intimidated by the classic pranayama (breathing) texts.

This little book is an excellent guide for yoga breathing. You don't have to dig through long texts (although interesting as well) about eastern life philosophy and can get straight to work. Several breathing techniques are explained in a couple of pages each and categorized per purpose, e.g. concentration, energy etc. definitely recommendable, especially when you're `a starter' and just want to experience some techniques.

I love this book. Janice is inspiring and funny and the artwork is wonderful. Very cool! This book has kept me motivated as I am doing my own "permanent fat removal." It's working. Her approach is unique and completely different from "diet" books. It is inspiring and offers a new way of looking at the whole "body image" thing. I get so caught up in the fun and cool way she has of thinking about food and removing fat permanently that I am losing weight without the struggle. It is a wonderful way to think about caring for yourself. I highly recommend this book!

Janice Taylor is simply delightful! She is cheerful, creative, and super-spirited about her work...and all of this comes across in her writing. There is no way to look at, listen to, or read Janice Taylor and be unhappy. No way! I am not on a personal quest for weight loss but "All is Forgiven", I have discovered, encompasses so much more - it's about renewing your outlook on life, your journey and, most of all, your esteem. It is the type of book that I like to take a little bite out of everyday - just for a boost of inspiration or a little yummy food for thought. The art work (graphics as well as Janice's artwork, present throughout the book) is an added boon. Even if I'm not reading, it's fun to just peruse the pictures, marvel at Janice's art, and enjoy how beautifully formatted the book is. If you are battling with your weight however, as many of us are, this book is a MUST READ before you even THINK about starting another diet! Everything about "All is Forgiven" will make you feel good, and better about what might have seemed an impossible journey to "Sveltsville." Sometimes you simply need a change of perspective :-)

While this book would be very helpful to a family suffering from Celiac Disease, there are very little recipes for a truly allergic child. I was expecting a cookbook full of pages with kid-friendly meal ideas that were free of all allergens listed on the cover. Many, many of these recipes call for more than one of the allergens listed on the cover as a key ingredient. I was very dissapointed with it.
I have found "Balancing the Bowl" and "The Whole Foods Allergy Free Cookbook" to be very helpful when trying new meals for my family, that includes an increasingly picky two-year-old happening to be allergic to milk (dairy), eggs, peanuts, wheat, rye and soy.
Don't waste your money on this book unless you are Celiac, and then it would be good for you.

Really disappointed with this cookbook, and I don't even know if I will use it. Really wish I had bought a different one, there are just so many to choose from. The thing about this one is, these recipes are not dairy free and egg free, etc., like it claims, but almost all of them have this stuff in them but with suggested substitutions to the side on some of them. And then on some the author says you can't substitute eggs in this one...well then why is it even in there?? It is deceptive and I wouldn't buy it.

Awful!

My 14 month old baby is allergic to dairy, eggs, wheat, peanuts, treenuts, peas, chicken and many more. I need cookbook to cook for him and myself. (on elimination diet) This is the book I use most of the time to cook for the whole family. I have seen many bad reviews on this book in which, I quite disagree. The recipe may list eggs or nuts as ingredients, but there is suggestion for substitution at the bottom. For example, egg replacer is very common substitution for eggs, not only for this cookbook. Some recipes in this book suggest omiting egg, and it works fine. I've tried many recipes in the book, with substitution at the bottom of recipes, and they all work. What I really like about this book is, the recipes are quite simple. There are not as many ingredients as other wheat-free food allergies cookbook. Less ingredients have advantage in that there is less chance I'll run into my baby's allergens. They are also much simpler to prepare in less time. With food allergic baby there isn't much time to do complicated cooking. The baking recipes also don't use xanthan gum, which my baby is sensitive to. Overall, I love this cookbook!! I would highly recommend it to any friends with multiple food allergies.

This book claims to have more than 150 recipes that are wheat-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, egg-free, low in sugar. NOT! The recipes are not free of all of these allergens. Some are free of gluten, some are free of nuts, etc. Most of the recipes have egg & many have dairy. This is NOT a book for kids on a gluten-free/casein-free (GF/CF) diet. Good thing we just borrowed a copy from the library to preview it & didn't actually buy a copy.

The recipes are wonderful and easy to follow. However, it wasn't until I had used the book for some time that I discovered that it was published in 1987. So now I am questioning whether or not it contains the latest research on diet for the renal patient. Quite a few of the recipes call for the use of coffee rich (a liquid). When I went to the store to find some the manager said that he had not seen coffee rich for about 15 years. So I wasn't sure what to substitute. I know that things are constantly changing in the medical world and what used to be okay may not be today. So I do question it. I'd like to hear from someone that is in that field that is familiar with this book.

the book is very poor for a person with kidney damage. the vega diet is very good. however. the protien intake, based on the meals in this book, is extremely to high. as a result it may good for some one that wants to eat healthy, but can only make a damaged kidny worse, and has no value for a kidny patient. i placed the book in the trash and and know i spent the money for nothing.

Review Date: 2005-09-05
What I like well in this book is the numerous tables, the questionnaires and the lists that summarize the essential data in each chapter.
What I like most in this book is the emphasis on clinical signs and symptoms for the diagnosis of hormonal imbalance rather than the usual relying on lab test only.

The author is from the fourth generation in a family of physician specializing in hormones well before the term "Endocrinology" had been invented. His great-grandfather, Dr. Eugene Hertoghe has given his name to the "Sign of Hertoghe", the shorter eyebrows of people with hypothyroidy and his father, Dr. Jacques Hertoghe has introduced the now widely used 24 hours thyroid hormone test. The test much better correlates with the signs, symptoms and complaints of thyroid hormone utilization than the usual thyroid hormone blood tests.
With his seminars and publications the author is well in line with the tradition of his family.
This book is a major contribution to our understanding of hormonal processes. I recommend this book to every person (inclusive physicians) interested in learning more about the way hormones affect us in all the aspects of our existence.

If You Haven't Been Feeling Well & Don't Know Why, It May Be Whacked Out Hormones

Review Date: 2005-09-03
I love how this book was written. Originally I set out to just do some learning on Bio-identical Hormones for a friend and found out that I may have issues with my own hormones.

He talks about what can happen to our bodies when our hormones are not balanced, and over the long-term, can lead to diseases.

The book is broken down into 4 major areas:
1. Hormones
2. Body
3. Mind
4. Hormone Solution

In Chapter 2 (which is a part of #1), he gives a quiz (Part I) on each of the 15 hormones he talks about in his book and the symptoms of deficiency. The hormones would be ACTH, Aldosterone, Calcitonin, Cortisol, DHEA, EPO, Estrogen, Growth Hormone, Insulin, Melatonin, Pregnenolone, Progesterone, Testosterone, Thyroid Hormones, and Vasopressin.

In Part II of the quiz, he quizzes your Energy, Sex, Sleep, Skin/Hair, Weight Control, Stress, Mood, Circulation (Heart & STroke), Joints, Bones, and Immune System.

It takes a bit to complete the full quiz, but well worth it. With the Part II stuff, he goes into further details about each of these.

In each of those sections, he'll talk about detecting & decoding one's deficiencies, how to eat to heal, the nutrients needed, supplementation, scientific evidence/studies, and concludes with summary of each of the 15 hormones that may impact that particular issue (i.e., weight issue).

For the Hormone Solution, he breaks this down into:
1. The hormone
2. Treatment
3. Recommended dosage & frequency
4. What they may be associated to in terms of impact with other hormones.

He has a couple pages for resources and 59 pages of references. WOW!!!

This book was very informative and the first book I read on hormones. I've since read several other books, but still like this one the best.

A good compliment to this book is Natural Hormone Balance for Women by Dr. Uzzi Reiss, who is a ob-gyn in Beverly Hills. He covers some other things Dr. Hertoghe doesn't.

Something I'd like to mention is I did go get a 24-hr urine analysis that looked at a number of the hormones mentioned in this book. His quiz made it fairly easy for me to have my doctor test for certain things and they were fairly close to being correct.

My naturopath has now given me some BIHs to help me rebalance those hormones I was deficient in. Am feeling so much better and this was about 3.5 weeks ago.

This book was required reading from an endocrinologist I was seeing and I'm so very glad that I read it cover to cover. I learned SO much about my hormone issues and was able to help figure out what was going on with my husband and his hormone issues. It made the remainder of his life bearable. I keep this book for reference and use it often. I bought and gave one to my primary care doctor and he said it has enlightened him on hormone issues with patients. We are so blessed that Dr. Thierry Hertoghe chose to share his knowledge with us to help as many people as possible to feel better and have quality of life. Best hormone book I have ever read!!

This book is clearly written. The author makes it possible for everyone to get a clue about which hormones might be missing in his/her body before visiting a health professional. Many health issues are covered with the specific hormonal deficienties. I found it very clarifying and it brought me a step forwards in my search for my lost health. I have read also the books of John R. Lee. The book of Thierry Hertoghe gives not so much information about what one can do self in comparison with the books of Lee on female issues.
in the meantime i go to his sister dr.Therese Hertoge for treatment, and i got much better.

This is the cookbook that taught me how to balance my proteins and make my vegetarian meals filling and satisfying. A classic that I intend to always keep on hand. There are some great recipes in this book, but there are also some real duds.

Well I'm not american nor a woman but found this book great - I actualy discovered my copy in an aprtment in Boston near Notheatern when I lived there for a summer. the recipies were pretty crap (insert mick dundee quote here) but some of the ideas on protein complementarity were interesting

Use for the recipes, not the politics

I grew up on the recipes from this book, so I admit that my opinion may be biased by the fact that, to me, many of the recipes in here are comfort foods. Still, this book remains simply one of the best basic vegetarian cookbooks out there. I agree that the preaching at the front gets a little old, and I have honestly never gotten through all of it, but the intention of this book is to teach new and beginning vegetarians how to cook healthy, protein filled vegetarian meals. Yes, the front matter is outdated and yes, she does stand on her soapbox for a long time, but this is easily skipped and reading this part has little to nothing to do with cooking the recipes that come after. And, in that capacity it works well. It provides easy, fully developed recipes that are simple to follow even for the unexperienced cook and have complete protein included. Like any cookbook there are recipes in here that are horrible, and then there are some that are amazing. I have brought the book to the attention of many friends who were new vegetarians over the years, and they have all been increadibly thankful for some guidence on how to cook something other than plain tofu. If you are just starting out, this is a great book to start with.

This is still a great cookbook with helpful ideas for creating delicious and nutritious meals. I love their blueberry cobbler recipe and still use it at least once a month.

Read it and judge for yourself

This book doesn't get five stars for its readability, but for it's information. I had planned to read it straight through, but got bored in chapter two (despite the very good information presented - there's just a lot of it) and set the book aside for months. I recently picked it back up and flipped to a later chapter, determined to read at least the parts that most interested me, but by the time I'd flipped between all the chapters that captured my interest, I realized I'd read the whole book after all.

Every person should have the information on sweeteners presented here, and every U.S. citizen needs to know this information on the FDA. If even only 5% of what's presented here is true (and I suspect there's a lot more truth here than that), it's still a worthwhile read. I've long suspected that the FDA was out to protect business over the consumer, and there is so much evidence here that confirms my suspicions, it disgusts me. I found the interview with Dr. David Graham, the FDA whistle-blower, especially interesting.

There's some scary stuff presented here. Read it and judge its value for yourself. Learn about the chemicals we use to sweeten our foods and about the desperate need for reform in the FDA, or bury your head in the sand and pretend everything is okie-dokie. Personally, I want to know as much as possible about the things I ingest, and I'm very glad I read this book and now have more knowledge in these matters.

So, why doesn't the ambulance driver recognize me yet?

And so, I kept waking up in the back of an ambulance. The multiple tests I was given are going a long way toward supporting the hospital mortgage payment, but they have, so far at least, proven inconclusive. Then, one of my employees suggested the connection between certain health conditions and aspertame. I must admit I was practically addicted to diet colas, fearing the high fructose corn syrup stuff to be dangerous and fattening. So, after reading a few articles on the internet, I quit aspertame entirely, or at least for the most part, since it is probably stuck in stuff I have not scented out yet. Then, I turned to Amazon for additional nonfiction information and came up with "Sweet Deception" by Dr. Joseph Mercola. Although an index would have been nice, I found the book very interesting. Chapter 2 was particularily frightening. Read it yourself. But, it was like old home week featuring the kind of persons who would have no problem sacrificing thousands of U.S. soldiers to steal a foreign country's oil. Then, the politics of the FDA was quite disturbing...how it was taken down by America's most beloved president and fairly much run by the industries we are supposed to be protected from. Outch. Other little asides to factory farming, box store food distribution and the wastage of chemical byproducts into our environment are no fun either. Well, you can have a nice day and hope the offending industries make plenty of moola. This book deserves a serious read by anyone interested in his health. But, I am only giving it four stars because, in the long run, it will make absolutely no change in the current situation.

Wonderful book, explains well why not to use artificial sweeteners. Dr. Mercola did a great job, as usual. More people should read it.
