I was excited to get this book because I have transitioned to a high protein lifestyle, however, there wasn't one single recipe in this book that was for the home cook in my opinion. Everything called for specialty ingredients and complicated steps. I've already donated it to goodwill.

I almost never return anything to Amazon. But this cookbook went back the day after I received it.

After having weight loss surgery I need to focus on a high protein diet. Though I am fairly creative in the kitchen I thought that it would be nice to not have to figure out calories, protein counts, etc., and also to get some variety into my diet.

This wasn't the right cookbook for that. Though the recipes ARE high protein they are not low calorie or low fat. Though the subtitle reads '500 calories or less' many of the recipes are approaching the 500 calorie mark, which is more than I want to "spend" on one meal (and this is just the main dish, not anything else).

Many of the recipes could have had their calories reduced and their nutrition improved by substitutions: milk instead of cream,low-calorie spread instead of butter, Splenda instead of sugar, for example. (Yes, I could do that on my own, but then I defeat the purpose of already having the nutrition information available.)

Though I believe the recipes are probably very tasty, this wasn't the cookbook for me.

I borrowed the audio book from the library, before deciding to buy the real book and was very glad I did it. Overall, I was greatly disappointed.
The audio book by itself is useless, as it's full of self-promotion, overly repetitive and refers the listener to get the details in the book every two minutes. I am not exaggerating. How many times in twenty minutes can you hear "Does it makes sense?" until you feel nauseuos? Try twenty times...

As for the theory itself, there is absolutely nothing new with the ideas of slow motion and "control tension". Most of my fitness instructors in gym to some extent follow these principles. And definitely, in most of yoga styles you would find the same ideas. (But yoga is - what? Only couple of thousands year old - nothing comparative to revolutionary principle of "12 seconds").
Most of dietary ideas , used in this program, are just common sense - drink water, have balanced diet, eat more vegetables, eat Omega-3 fats, don't eat starchy carbs in the evening. Some others sound strange to me, for example all the recommendations to take one or another supplement and skip fruits (but drink water with added sugar!). This looks like one more product endorsement.
As for the exercise complex itself (I actually listened to it while driving, trying to remember and use it later), it's a good routine, but the idea that you can do it everywhere is seriously misleading. My co-workers would just love watching me doing knee push-ups in my cubicle... and how many of us have the freedom of closing the door of the private office for 20 minutes?

Since I haven't tried the program, I do not know how effective it could be. It probably is, as would be any program if you follow all the recommendations diligently. But in my opinion, there are so many better books targeting the change in life style and not promising fast results, shamelessly branding the others' ideas and common sense as "revolution".

Because that is really all this phony believes in. All that wasted space devoted to "I want to help you be healthier" is just a line. In reality, he doesn't believe in anything except trying to get as much of your money as possible.

In 8 minutes in the morning he describes the effectiveness of using low weights and high repetitions. In the 12 second sequence he says there is "no way" you can lose weight using low weights and high repetitions.

He "invents" a lot of theories that have been around for years, claiming that he is the first to divulge this "secret".

Save your money--this guy has enough of that. What he really needs is some integrity.

This book is about children and the appropriate participation of sports at different age levels. Moreover, it addresses the problems of children with various disabilities, such as asthma, diabetes, etc. for parents and school coaches, to enable them to make decisions regarding their childrens' participation in sports. I believe this is an important and remarkable book that
Dr. Small has made available for those people who are concerned about the well-being of their children

Dr. Small has covered all bases in this extremely informative, well layed-out book.
His outlines, questions and answers, and diagrams provide a clear cut guide for parents. As a physical therapist that treats adults and children, I am often faced with the same questions Dr. Small has answered in his book. Besides being a great guide for parents, it is an excellent reference for rehab professionals, coaches and any other professionals who work with kids' sports.

If you know a Chinaman that would like the book I would be glad to send it to him.

A Must Read to Understand how Critical pH Balance Is

Review Date: 2008-03-23
Read this book to understand the why of pH Balance for your health. Great chemical analysis and very helpful. Even if you don't have the background to understand the chemical compositions you will enjoy the powerful understanding that balancing your inner pH has on your overall health. Do not make this the only book you read on Acid Alkaline balance because you need the recipes and the other parts of understanding for healing yourself. You will also need to understand what foods and life style choices are Acidic and what are Alkaline and this book doesn't answer that. I recommend any of Dr Robert and Shelley Young pH Miracle books for deep why understanding and I recommend Dr Baroody's "Alkalize or Die" for and understanding of what other life style choices help with Acid Alkaline balance as well as understanding the What. And may need a good Naturopath or Herbalist or Nutritionist to help you through the process initially. You can have great health understanding these principles.

great book!

A lot of fluff and not many facts
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-20
This book is similiar to a big infomercial for fasting. The authors tell all the great benefits of fasting, but have very little (if any) facts backing up their statements. I like to double-check references and studies that are quoted when reading health/nutrition literature and I was not able to do this, I just had to take the authors' word for it, which sometimes left me wondering.

One statement that left me scratching my head is found on page 17, and reads "Dairy farmers found by giving cows salt blocks to lick, they drink more water. The more water they drink, the more milk produced. But the result is that the average quart of milk contains the extremely high content of 1 1/2 grams of salt per quart! Go past any American school and look at the children. You will be amazed by how many of them are overweight, lack stamina and the spark of youth. Most are heavy drinkers of commercial milk, and most foods they eat contain high concentrations of salt!"

I have no idea how the author correalated high salt intake to obese children?!? Obese children are obese because they eat too much fast food, candy, soda and do not exercise, THEY ARE NOT OBESE BECAUSE THEY DRINK MILK! Yes, they eat a lot of salt, but it's not why they are fat. There are others factors at play.

The majority of the book touts a raw food, vegetarian diet for longevity, health and energy and has nothing to do with fasting whatsoever. Some of the topics include, the downfalls of modern medicine, exercise for energy, get plenty of sunshine and fresh air, eat raw foods as much as possible and of course, stay away from the junk. This is all information that any health conscious person already knows. About the only thing I learned about fasting from the book was that the author fasts one day a week, and up to 10 days four times a year. And only with distilled water.

Other downfalls include the extra large print, like they were trying to stretch the book into more pages than it needs to be. And the constant references to their other line of products, like Apple Cider Vinegar and Olive Oil, neither of which have anything to do with fasting.

If you are totally new to fasting for health, or a couch potato who wants to know more about health and nutrition in general, this book may give you some helpful information all in one place. Otherwise, most of the information can be gleaned by doing a Google search for "fasting."

I am truly thankful for the information presented in The Miracle of Fasting. I had an ulcerated leg that was destined to be amputated from a lack of circulation. I tried everything to save it. I almost gave up the fight until I read this wonderful book. I put the advice that Patricia Bragg gave in the book into practice and started fasting as much as my body would tolerate. After 5 weeks of a radical diet change and some fasting I noticed some improvement and over time my ulcers disappeared and I'm happy to say I have all 10 toes and 2 happy feet. I am healthier and very VERY thankful for " THE MIRACLE OF FASTING" Buy the book! You'll never be the same!

I have tried many other ways to control my overeating and weight loss and this method works for me.

There's a lot of good information here. As a teacher of twenty-five years, and as a parent, I've dealt with more than my share of overweight kids, and read everything that comes along on the subject. And although this book is one of the better ones out there, I've been recommending the CD talk "The Fat Kid's Diet: Stop Childhood Obesity In Your Home," available here at Amazon, to the parents who come to me with their concerns. It's brief, sensible, and right to the point.

I read this book to help my daughter who is slightly overweight. I didn't even keep it in my library. If your child has an obesity problem, or if you just have no idea what healthy eating is this book will help you, but to be honest there were many times while reading it that I just had to say "duh!" I was looking for some insight beyond simple common sense. My family doesn't eat fast food three times a week and spend hours watching TV every day. If you have a child that seems to be active and eats a well balanced diet, but still is overweight I would not recommend you looking to this book for an answer.

My twin sister gave me a copy of the book "Life is Hard Food is Easy" a couple of years ago. This summer I finally had the chance to read it and I wish I had done so years ago. While I don't currently have a problem with emotional eating, I can tell that I did in the past. I am currently on a weight loss regimen and succeeding little by little. I know that the suggestions in this book will help me not only with the continued weight loss, but also with other areas of life.

One of the pieces of advice that stuck with me the most is to think of overweight/obesity as a condition that must be managed throughout life. This book has many practical suggestions that will help you succeed in managing your condition. I am grateful to Linda Spangle for sharing her story and for having the courage to give us a different view of the weight loss puzzle.

I read this book almost two years ago and am constantly recommending it to people. For some odd reason, I don't give this book all the credit for my weight loss. (I've lost 60 lbs and have kept it off for a year.) The book does have some concrete diet tips like suggesting to only eat 50 percent of your normal portion and only eating things that taste good. What I really liked about this book was that it looked at why you eat. I really believe this book changed the way I look at food. The book helps you to realize that a lot of eating is done to try and solve other problems. It is crazy, the day you reach into the fridge and ask yourself "Why am I eating?" and you recognize that it has nothing to do with hunger and close the door.

This book has been very helpful to me.

The authors recommend 10 servings of protein a day; and that makes this a high protein diet: not overly high but high. Check with your MD to see how many servings are safe for you if you are a woman as wrist fractures increase for women consuming over 8 ounces of protein a day, according to a major female nurse study--however, you may be able to consume more, safely, if you are obese. The foods recommended are proven to improve mood. The high protein helps promote satiety so you won't feel hungry. It's nice to have proven combinations of foods spelled out and placed into daily menus. Great little book!

The Good Mood Diet really does help to balance your moods - it was as if eating the recommended foods simply erased my tendency toward irritability and anxiety. I was a little concerned when my weight did not go down right away, as that was also what I was looking for, but it just took a few weeks for my metabolism to speed up and then everything was good. The book is quite detailed. Very much to learn, but it WORKS! Also, there is a website with a chat group to get support and ask questions which is very helpful. Also, if it seems overwhelming at first, it'll get much easier to do without checking off a list in just a couple of weeks. Definitely recommend this book. May not be the fastest weight loss plan, but the healthiest physically and emotionally. Go buy it!

The beginning of the book gives a brief outline of the diseases as well as causes, diagnosis and nutritional facts. The sidebars contain informative tips. The remainder of the book delves into delicious and healthy recipes anyone can enjoy.

Being a muffin fan, the first recipe I tried was Blueberry Muffins. The recipe calls for ΒΌ cup 2% milk or soy milk. I used almond milk as a substitute and it worked great. The muffins are very moist and I would assume it's because of the apple sauce.

I was pleased to see a recipe for Homemade Sausage. Store purchased sausage, whether Farmers, Italian, or Breakfast is extremely high in fat, and often with preservatives. Roscher provides recipes for all three types of sausage. I tried the Breakfast Sausage and we loved it. Roscher suggests ground pork loin which is very low in fat and the seasonings were perfect.

There are many other recipes that I will be trying from "How to Cook for Crohn's and Colitis." Roscher's exceptional book is concise, easy to read, and fitting for anyone with a busy life. Skimming through the recipes it looks like the ingredients would be found in anyone's pantry and certainly at any local grocery store.

I was diagnosed with UC in December of 2001. I studied up on the disease to educate myself and I found recipes here and there that I liked. The problem was that many of the recipes required the purchasing of expensive items at the health food store that I had never heard of. Another problem was that the food was stuff that I normally wouldn't eat. This book is perfect for an average UC patient. By average I mean you're not used to spending a ton of money on your nightly dinner. These recipes taste wonderful and I have already noticed an improvement in my flare-ups. The rest of your family won't tell the difference that the mac and cheese is bowel friendly. I think this is the best UC cook book currently out on the market. I love it!
