I picked this book up in a cruise ship library and couldn't put it down. In fact at the end of the cruise I quickly scribbled down as much information out of the book as I could so I could have references pages until I could buy a copy. Coming off of a low carb diet I was specifically after good quality "carb" foods that I could start eating with out the fear of weight gain. Although I didn't pay much attention to the excercise topics that forwarded each section I really enjoyed all of the food information. There aren't really that many recipes in this book and the ones I've tried aren't exactly delicious. But the amount of information on specific foods and ideas on how to work them into a normal diet with ease was extensive. I would reccommend this book to anyone on a quest to just eat and feel healthier.

Several months ago I purchased this book along with "Joy Bauer's Food Cures" and "What Color is Your Diet" by David Heber. I found that "SuperFoods HealthStyle" was by far the best choice of the three. It is well organized, gave clear information about the benefits (or drawbacks) of various foods, and gave suggestions that made it easy to incorporate the desired foods in my diet. The book also includes other, non dietary, information (such as exercise) to improve your health. If you, like myself, have an interest in improving your diet, "SuperFoods HealthStyle" will give you the resources to make numerous positive changes. This book has changed my diet, and therefore my life, for the better.

This book has changed our way of eating - the easy way. It is motivating to read how each 'super' food benefits your health, great little recipes to help incorporate the new food in your life. I liked that the book touches on the subjects of porton, sleep, exercise and blood pressure. It is an all rounded book that pulls a lot of good facts into one easy to read source. Forget about diet books ... try this and I have already noticed a change in my health: more energy, improved immune system, loosing weight the healthy way (you do need to exercise!)
I strongly suggest you start incorporating each food type into your diet as you go through the book, or pick what appeals to you first. Otherwise, you'll have a good read with no action. Great if you have cholesterol/high blood pressure as a lot of the superfood seems to focus on these key areas.

Steven Pratt and Kathy Matthews have come up with a marvelous way for you to improve your health, and change your life. Rather than (like most diet books) telling you to give anything up, they encourage you to "add" things to your diet which will make a major difference in how you look and feel over the long haul. Most diet books insist you cut out "this", or cut out "that", or at least minimize the food to some small dime-sized portion. Pratt and Matthews, on the other hand, believe that it is what you are "not" eating that is holding you back from achieving your optimum health, and so their books are focused on getting you to add those foods to your diet. Their first book (SuperFoods Rx: Fourteen Foods That Will Change Your Life) is actually the one you should read first. It is organized in an extremely logical way, and leads the reader gently yet authoritatively into the concept of adding only 14 foods, making a huge difference in your health. Their second book (SuperFoods Healthstyle) adds an additional 10 foods to the mix (for a total of 24), yet the book lacks some of the instant readability and understandability of the first book. My honest recommendation is that you start with the first book (SuperFoods Rx), whether you buy it or just borrow it from the library. Then, when you've read the basics in a clear and understandable way, buy this second book (SuperFoods HealthStyle) which includes virtually all the information from the first book, also includes a great amount of additional information on exercise and sleep and other health practices, but is not quite formatted in as clear a way as SuperFoods Rx. Aside from my slight critique of the organization of this second book, I want to emphatically say that Steven Pratt and Kathy Matthews have come up with an easy-to-implement strategy for adding terrific foods and nutrients to your diet, that will truly "change your life", and may even add years of good and vibrant health to your life. And as a final enticement, let me just add that "dark chocolate" is one of the 24 SuperFoods. I mean, is this a diet? Yes, and it really works! But it's much more than a diet. It's a plan to change how you look at food and your health.

This is a GREAT book! Simple ways to use REAL foods (not just supplements) to use on a regular basis to get and keep oneself and family healthy!
There are even a few recipes and plenty of ideas. My fussy, I hate it if it's healthy husband will even eat many of these foods and those he won't ,
there are ways to disguise these foods w/in other foods =+)
Very much a book I would recommend to all.

Huffnagle's "Probiotics Revolution" is written by a reputable scholar and scientist in an approachable but not overly simplified manner. The book is organized in 3 sections:
Part 1: The Promise of Probiotics (4 chapters) gives the scientific background for by the book by describing immune system functioning, the effects of antibiotics, and the relationship between immune system functioning and inflammation, which is at the basis of so many diseases. A key idea is that, for optimal functioning, we need to populate our gut with "good bacteria" to crowd out and make life inhospitable for "bad bacteria."
Part 2: Preventing and Treating Disease (5 chapters) deals with particular diseases that are benefitted by the use of probiotics, particularly digestive and urogenital diseases and allergic responses, plus discussion of the general use of probiotics for health and more speculative discussion of the potential for probiotic benefits for other inflammation-based disorders such as cancer and cardiovascular disease.
Part 3: Promoting Microbial Blanace: What You Can Do (7 chapters) discusses food and supplement sources of probiotics and "prebiotics" (foods such as fruits, veggies, and whole grains) that provide nutritional support for the probiotics. (Although there is no separate chapter, another key term from the book is "metabiotics," the metabolic products of probiotics, which provide some benefit even when the bacteria themselves have died--this is why cooked foods such as pasteurized yogurt or sourdough bread can still show some benefit.) Detailed charts discussing the particular species content of different supplements and indicating which species have been scientifically demonstrated to benefit which disorders are included. The book concludes with a general food plan, a discussion of how to get kids to eat more healthfully (illustrated with amusing anecdotes with his own children), and some recipes, focused mostly on recipes for those with a busy lifestyle who do not want to spend a lot of time on food preparation.
I highly recommend the book for its scientific basis and accessible presentation. My one criticism is that I thought that the recipes section was a little paltry, particularly with regards to its selection of main dishes (only two, one of which was nachos, not something I normally think of as a main dish). Overall, an excellent and practical resource.

This book is a fascinating read. Information is presented clearly and in depth. It is written in an easy-to-read ,familiar manner. I constantly wanted to read parts aloud to family members (annoying, huh?) and share information with friends.
If you are intrigued by and/or interested in probiotics, you will do well to read this book.

After several courses of antibiotics, my health had deteriorated and no longer responded well to more antibiotics: infections would get better for a week or so and then get worse again just as I thought I had gotten better. I turned to probiotics as a last resort and now wish I had turned to these 'good bacteria' long before. Huffnagle & Wernick's book not only explains how these good bacteria work inside our bodies, it also has a list of probiotic products that have been tested and shown to be effective. I took the book with me when I went to my local health food store and used the product list. For that alone, this book is a great resource. If you have recurring UTI or impetigo, give probiotics a try!

I bought this book in conjunction with purchasing a home yogurt-maker. It's written in an easy-to-understand style and makes a great argument for including probiotics in your daily diet. With all of the antibiotics in our medicine, food and soap, it's important to know how to replenish the good bacteria in our bodies.

I have read this book all in the same day I picked it up from the library. It is well written and does not condescend to the reader yet thoroughly explains the science behind probiotics, and how to apply this knowledge. I intend to read more and thoroughly revamp my diet.
The anecdotal bits and the studies cited were enough to convince me of a connection between probiotics and many major health issues. I intend to conduct my own study using my, and my family's health!
Thanks!

And I'm so glad I did. This book is PACKED with the enough of the big picture to really shed light on how dangerous this stuff is. Read about Monsanto and saccharine in 1901. Read about how Splenda produces more air pollution than our dirtiest tire factory or oil refinery. Splenda. Yay.
This book is a great read! If you are looking for a window into the sordid history of the U.S., "Sweet Deception" is a good place to start. If you are looking for an easy way to promote your family's health, start with "Sweet Deception".
My husband drank Diet Dr. Pepper by the two-liter, at least 2 a day, EVERY DAY, the entire time I knew him. This guy's body was his enemy, with 2 major car accidents, scoliosis, and arthritis under his belt. He was so bad off that he had to hold on to something to sneeze, or his entire body would crumple in pain and he is a big, tough, active guy despite his limitations.
When I told him that aspartame turns into formaldehyde in your blood, he stopped drinking it immediately. I'd told him a bunch of other evil things about it, but that was the one that got him. Two weeks later he was standing in the kitchen and he sneezed 3 times in a row, and he just STOOD THERE!! and when he looked up, he was bleary-eyed and smiling, and I said "Didn't that hurt?" And he told me, no, not a bit, and then that he hadn't sneezed without pain in 15 years. I almost cried, but instead I said "told you so".
He's so much better now! We had no idea all these years that so many of his problems were directly caused by the slow embalming job he was doing on himself. (also, the fact that he replaced the soda with water has helped) DRINK WATER!! YOU'RE MADE OF IT!!!)
Thank you, Dr. Mercola! I hope they don't give you cancer with their microwave technology.

An overwhelming percentage of individuals in Western Society now substitute sugar with a variety of artificial sweetener, believing that such action is for the benefit of their health. In `Sweet Deception', Drs. Joseph Mercola and Kendra Pearsall attempt to correct this falsity, launching an assault on sweeteners, their manufacturers, and the medical sophists who inculcate junk science onto the public for their own financial gain.
The book traces the accidental discovery of various chemical sweeteners, which eventually became common in the most mundane foodstuffs. Exposing the science used to promote the safety of these chemicals for human consumption as minimal or highly partial, the authors look into the chemistry of sweeteners--such as aspartame or sucralose--and how these negatively react with a body which was never designed for their absorption. The results of this perverted interaction are revealed: brain tumours, diabetes, cancer, internal bleeding, anemia, visual disruption and numerous other unpleasant conditions, all directly related to the ingestion of artificial sweeteners. The monetary corruption involved in the FDA in relation to the sweetener industry is exposed, which should leave all readers concerned over whether the `experts' priorities lie with the health of the public, or their own pocket.
An enlightening interview with FDA `insider' Dr. David Graham is included, presenting a disturbing image on those who should be responsible for the health of the American nation.
However, while the authors' exposition of impropriety within the food industry, as well as the hazardous nature of man-made sweeteners, is well researched, and solidified with an abundance of evidence, there is also an apparent tendency for the authors to make statements from ideology, rather than documentation. Their lengthy, and unnecessary, chapter on the dangers of natural sugar often appear fall into this category, preferring to puritanically lambaste a sweet-tooth for not fitting in with their rigid health-regime.
If one can read past the various shortcomings of the authors, `Sweet Deception' will be an informative manual into the dangers of trusting a field of quackery.

Maybe aspartame is a deadly poison, but that case is not sufficiently made in this book. Unfortunately, Dr. Mercola relies on the shrill conspiracy theories of non-scientists in proving how dangerous aspartame is. For those of us who are open to the idea that aspartame and other food additives might not be as healthy as everyone claims, this book is a huge disappointment. There has to be a way to discuss these issues without exaggeration, hyperbole, and trafficking in rumor, anecdote, and urban legend.

After mixing up a batch of her `Power Vision' (page 61) and taking a sip, I had a brief delightful flash, which made me feel as though I was basking in the actual healing presence of Ms. Chace herself. Indeed, the next day, after sipping some `Pure Joy' (page 209) I realized that by following the nurturing advice inherent throughout her Smoothie's book, Ms. Chace has made me feel richer than any Manhattan Bank. Perhaps I should try next, Daniella's `Brain Food' (page 252), to help me straighten up and fly right, since up until discovering this book, I've been sipping too much from my old family recipe, `Smoothies for Stooges': Six parts gin, 5 parts vermouth, a dash of alum, top with unfettered artichoke, Shake like dynamite, chug like a maniac.
I am thirsting for Daniella's next deliciously curative book.

I am really enjoying this book. The author has done a really nice job explaning the cause of common ailments and then gives recipes that incorporates ingredients to help protect against them. The chapters make it simple to refer to the areas that I personally want to focus on and I appreciate the fact that the information is coming from a practicing nutritionist.More Smoothies for Life: Satisfy, Energize, and Heal Your Body

McDougall rocks! As a vegan already, I didn't see what I could possibly be doing that would cause the weight gain I had been experiencing. Luckily, I came upon mcdougall, started eating a LOT more then I had been eating, excercising LESS, and losing weight. I hadn't realized just how fattening the effects of soy/tofu were on my body! And the tiny amounts of oil in every vegan recipe had always seemed necessary to make the food taste 'right". Well, guess what, when you stop eating oil, you realize oil and fat taste bad! It took a week of McDougall before any oils tasted like motor oil..yuck!
So far, I've lost over ten pounds, and everyone wants to know what I'm doing... and I've even found an easy way to do much of the diet when pushed for time- mcDougall cups! This diet works. That is the first and the last word.
You can eat as much as you like (of the right foods). You will never feel hungry. You can snack as much as you can bear.
Want your svelte twenty year old body back? This diet will do it.
Tired of carrying an extra fifty pounds? This diet will eliminate it without any sacrifice.
Giving up refined flour products (toast) was vital for this satisfied customer; weight loss went from 0 lbs back to -9 lbs per month. Amazing.
Requirements? A little will power. "Do or do not. There is no try." - Yoda.
"Oh no. I couldn't do that. I couldn't give up (meat, milk, cheese, oils)" is your inner dragon talking. Try these recipes. You should notice that you are eating better than ever before.
(Full disclosure. Someone here kept eating 3-4 fish portions / month; purely for the anti-stroke effect, no doubt. Honest. But only 3oz / meal; after two weeks without meat that is a real feast; a Pritiken-sized portion).
These rare feasts helped compliance otherwise enormously. Willpower and self denial alone don't work in the long term. So you CAN eat the wrong foods. Just not every day. Or week. Or month. It is NOT that you can never eat meat, cheese etc again. It IS that you can eat them once every second Thanksgiving (or calculate % non-compliance here) ); which is as often as McDougall says he eats turkey.
Sauces are far more vital than rare feasts. General Tsao, kung pao, thai chili, teriyaki, black bean and mexican hot sauces all make the food an endless everyday treat. Happily they all meet the diet's requirements for limited fat.
Can't do it? Willpower of a gnat? That's a real pity. You could start with partial adherence; get used to it; then gradually increase the compliance. % compliance is entirely up to you. Better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all? Plus the secret is: following the diet becomes extremely easy as it becomes a daily habit. In about a year.
Now before we eat let us say grace. "Thank you Oh Lord for John and Mary McDougall's diet. Good food. Good drink. Good God. Let's eat."
Enjoy.

I make no secret that the 25 pound weight loss I experienced without counting a single calorie or EVER being hungry (cuz humans are not supposed to be hungry if they can eat right) came from reading and following this book. It's easy, cheap, and you feel great! Much easier than a bi-pass (geriatric or cardiac), insulin or amputation for diabetes, and chemo for cancer...diseases that can be caused and/or worsened by obesity. This book, and the Maximum Weight Loss Plan by Dr. Neal Barnard are the best kept secrets, IMHO. These docs ought to win the Nobel Prize. They aren't on the take from any company or industry and are sincere about helping hundreds of thousands over the years, for free because they care. They have no money-guzzling supplements or products or scams. Have seen many lose incredible amounts of weight using these two books and still recommend them all the time. For those like me who have difficulty losing weight, you have to follow the book's advice about ramping up your green & yellow veggies, eating salads as much as possible. This way of eating is very similar to other cultures of the world where they have no diseases of affluence. Including the legendary Olympic running Kenyans. No hunger, no thinking about food all day -- only positive results -- immediately. This doctor has been promoting this program for years, so why isn't everyone who wants to lose weight and get healthier jumping on board? Dr. McDougall should be on national television each and every day until all hear his plan. It's fantastic! The book is well written, logical and easy to follow. Five stars is not enough -- this should have at least ten stars to share how important the message content is.

I love this cookbook because it doesn't necessarily require you to go out and get exotic ingredients from a specialty store. Most ingredients are things you either probably already have or can easily pick up at any grocery store. There's also a lot of quick recipes for those nights you don't feel like putting so much work into dinner or thinking about how it will affect your diet.

IF you already know how to cook this book is an "insult" - it's so basic it's laughable. Plus most of the more "interesting" recipes can be found online at any of several low-carb web sites. I also found that there were editorial mistakes - like the temperature which to bake a cheescake was eliminated. And mistakes on the author's part in which she does not indicate the size pan to use - which DOES make a difference in the final outcome of any baked item. The author also uses ingredients that are HARD to come by in her recipes without giving substitutes.
All in all I was quite disappointed! But in all fairness - it would be a good "starting" cookbook for those folks who are lacking in the culinary arts.

This was my first Dana Carpenter book. I had already been introduced to the low carb way of eating, but Dana's book makes it so much more interesting! Her humor and healthy tips inspire me to be faithful. The variety of recipes expand my menu ideas considerably, and also are a springboard for recipes of my own creation.
Because I liked this book so much, I also bought Volume 1 of "500 Recipes" cookbook for myself and 3 others. This second volume, however, is my favorite. I also just purchased Dana's "How I Gave Up My Low Fat Diet and Lost 40 LBS." book, and am enjoying it very much, which I heartily recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about lo carb eating, and also to those who need motivation to continue. It is full of excellent health info.
If you need new recipe ideas, or instruction on how to eat low carb, Dana provides it all in a fun and interesting way. Dana is a great mentor on the path of a low carb lifestyle!

As a type 2 diabetic I enjoyed reading this book. It was very informative and made me think a lot more seriously about what I thought were innocent
indulgences that temporarily raised my blood sugar. I am more aware now of
that all important 140 threshhold. After speaking with a diabetic who has her diabetes very well under control, I am not going to be testing after one
hour. I will continue to test two hours after eating and aim for 140 then.

She uses layman's terms and common sense and she emphasizes the importance of you understanding your own disease and taking control. Afterall, it is YOUR disease, not your doctors. So listen to your doctor, but go above and beyond what he tells you to do...get ths book and join the 5% club!

Blood Sugar 101: What They Don't Tell You About Diabetes
Over the past several years I have sent many people to Jenny Ruhl's Bloodsugar101 website. Now a lot of that information is available offline in this book. No medical professional has ever taught me more about blood glucose control than Jenny's site. Did you know ravenous hunger is a symptom of wide blood sugar swings? If my last doctor had told me this 15 years ago I might never have gained that last 100 pounds or gotten diabetes.

For years, my doctors ignored my positive glucose tolerance tests because my fasting blood sugars were "normal". With the help of this book and a glucometer, I now have brought my post meal blood sugars down to a safe level. I have to wonder how many of my past health problems were related to elevated glucose levels.
This book has given me a greater understanding of diabetes and what can be done to get it under control. She gives practical, easy to read, advice based on her thorough research. I have given copies of this book to my doctors and my friends. Although the information can be found on Jenny's Blood Sugar 101 website, I have found the book invaluable. It is well organized and puts the information right at my fingertips.
I highly recommend this book to anyone with diabetes, prediabetes, insulin resistance or metabolic symdrome. It will open your eyes to the devastating effects of even mildly elevated blood sugars.

Blood sugar is a complex issue, and diabetes too. But this book explores and explains how it works, getting away from the "blame the patient" attitude we see so often in the medical community. (And not everyone will agree, but since D-2 sufferers are disproportionately female, black, and overweight, well, there's a lot of disapproving buttons being pushed there.) Instead, this book gives a compassionate and highly readable analysis. It's a good gift for your friends and relatives who have been diagnosed, because it gives great advice in a calm, reasonable, and generous voice.

I own a few low-sodium cookbooks, and this is the one I use most often. It is full of recipes that are easy to make, and that are actually useful. One of my favorites is Sesame Chicken. I make that about once a week. It also has a small collection of low-sodium bread machine recipes that I use often. My only criticism is that there seem to be a lot of mistakes in the recipes. For example, one bread machine recipe calls for two tablespoons of yeast, which is far too much. I'm sure it is supposed to say two teaspoons. Also, in some instances, the author's website (www.lowsodiumcooking.com) will include a recipe that is in the book, but the amounts of the ingredients differ, often confusing teaspoons and tablespoons. There have been two instances when I've emailed the author to verify the ingredients in a recipe. On one occasion, he replied to tell me there was an error. The other time he did not reply. All in all, I'd say this is a must-have cookbook in the low salt category. Just watch for any ingredients that seem suspicious.

I have been on a low sodium diet for 5 years now and this is the first book I have come across that has reciepes my husband actually enjoys! I even had friends ask me for copies of reciepes from this book because they were so tasty. Years ago there were only two books that I could find that were strictly low sodium and I was getting major low sodium burn-out rut! This really helped me get my eating back on track and actually look forward to cooking again. The only thing is a lot of these recipes are high in the sugar. That's why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. I adjust a lot of these when I see too much in them. Other wise I would get this for anyone who needs to lower their sodium.

I found this book on my first read to be informative, well sourced, and well thought out. Marilyn offers many tips on diet and supplements, many of which I'm trying to implement but I'm having a little trouble with the dietary because I'm a vegetarian who doesn't eat too many eggs or dairy, and she recommends 3 servings a day of dairy but then goes on to let you know that there can be some problems associated with dairy for infertile women, and that if you have PMS you can help the symptoms sometimes by avoiding dairy. Anyway, I thought the rest of the advice seems sound and is worth trying! It's a well-written book and I'm going to recommend it.
