A decent place to start...for nowReview Date: 2008-01-05
BUT, there are problems with many of the recipes in this book. They are inconsistent. So much so that I wonder if she's even tried them all. Then there are telling errors that make one wonder whether she truly understands what she'd doing.
For example:
Everyone's favorite (and mine too), the Yeast-Rising Thick Pizza Crust has 4 cups of various flours and 1 tsp of salt. Result: fairly flat (I double the salt). However, the thin crusts on the previous 2 pages have 1 cup of flours and call for the same 1 tsp of salt, the equivalent of quadrupling the salt on the yeast crust. Result: a salty crust made edible only by diluting the salt with the toppings.
All of the breads that I've tried are flat. She tends to use 1/4 tsp of salt per cup of flour (including the yeast crust), which isn't enough, at least not for me. I like about 1/2 tsp per cup, or the bread has little taste.
Then there are outright boneheaded things like my personal cookbook pet peeve: 3 tsp. The Challah recipe calls for 3 tsp of xanthan gum. And the muffins. Wow. She warns you not to overbeat your muffins! This is gluten-free flour! You can't overbeat it! The lack of basic food knowledge and kitchen arithmetic is depressing.
The buttermilk biscuits are a mess. They're by no means a cut-out biscuit, they're drop biscuits. But even then they have nothing to hold them together and just crumble. You can't very well butter something that disintegrates when you look at it wrong.
I try to always follow a recipe exactly the first time, just to see what I have to work with. I can't really do that with this book. The times I have, the results have gone from mediocre to disastrous.
If you get (or have) this book, then if nothing else, remember 1/2 tsp salt per cup of flour, and everything will be so much better. If you have another GF cookbook and can wait, then rumor has it that Chef Richard Coppedge, Professor in Baking and Pastry Arts at the CIA, is going to publish a gluten-free cookbook sometime soon. The only thing I have to go on is the word of a current CIA student, but I hope it's true. I am personally looking forward to it, and will be getting it as soon as I see it.

This is the yoga method your looking for .......Review Date: 2007-05-07
As I studied and searched, I came into contact with Stephen Copes fantastic book "Yoga and the Quest for the True Self". This fantastic book led me to learn about and come to understand the Kripalu yoga method [ yes folks there is much more than just the hatha yoga we all seem to come into contact with]; this great practice is a combination of the physical hatha yoga and meditation. Please don't be overwhelmed; it's, in my book, the perfect combination.
As one who finds himself progressing on a daily basis, I highly recommend these two books. I suggest the reader, searcher, learner to explore a basic hatha yoga book or experience while reading "Kripalu Yoga" and branching out to Stephen Copes book for the "icing on the cake".
Stephen Cope, by the way, is one of the Senior teachers at the Kripalu Yoga Center.
I'm pleased to make this discovery myself and even happier to share my experience.
Namaste ........

I have a bloodpressure mean of 120/60 ! But: You have to follow all instructions of the DASH Diat. And it really works ! Great book and the price you spend for your health is nothing !
The DASH diet a real miracle for me!Review Date: 2008-04-16
I decided to order the Dash diet manual the day I had a very severe crisis of blood pressure, 200/120, very early in the morning, even though I had been taking the days before maximum dosis of drugs for hyper tension prescribed by my physician.
So just use it if you have high blood pressures, and you will see the results by yourself!!! It really works!
Now I am just taking one drug, and my aim is to take none, as I had to suspend another maximum dosis of drug with dangerous side effects, as for the first time in my life I had a low blood pressure crisis.

The journal starts out with you writing down your vitals stats such as your weight, blood glucose, cholesterol, and so on. There are before and after sections on the same page so you can see if you ultimately reach your goals.
The book moves on to cover the goals of the three phases (readers of the book will already be familiar with these) and then divides into three parts- a section of similar pages for phase one, a section of similar pages for phase two, and a section of similar pages for phase three.
The phase one pages have you enter the date at the top of the page and then rate your activity level. Then follows 6 questions you answer at the end of each day, such as "did you eat at least three meals and at least one snack including a nutritional breakfast?" Other questions are about things such as your water and vitamin intake.
The page then ends with a place for you to enter aerobic exercise data and also includes a strengthening "grid" for you to document your reps, sets, etc. Phase 2 and 3 pages are the same, except that they have hunger scales included at the bottom of each page.
A must-have companion for those who are trying "The Best Life Diet," I found that its best strength is that it keeps you focused on reaching the right goals. Also recommend The Sixty-Second Motivator if you need additional motivation to reach your fitness goals. Good Luck!

The author is both brilliant and original.
He goes beyond telling us that it is important and beneficial to eat our organic fruits and veggies. Most books stop right there, when you really analyze them.
Why do some people need 100 times more Vitamin C than others do? What is the connection between our minds and our bodies? Where another book may tell us that the path to health is through diet, nutrition, vitamins, etc., Ballentine tells us that the most important element is your own mind. You have to deal with your issues.
In this regard, he agrees with Gary Null, who always says that the single most important factor in health is happiness, and that all the vitamins and organics in the world don't match the importance of living a happy life.
I just got to the part in this book where Ballentine explains that our chemistry and physics teachers were wrong when they told us that the elements in the periodic table can't be transformed into each other without a nuclear reactor operating on them. The enzymes in our bodies, and in the bodies of chickens, fish, etc., are quite capable of transforming one element into another, gently, without that nuclear explosion. Potassium, sodium, iron, copper, calcium, are being switched around inside the bodies of living creatures. Nitrogen is sometimes transformed into carbon monoxide. Amazing. Chickens are capable of making their own calcium, out of other elements, in order to make egg shells.
It's nice to find such an original thinker in this field. And you get the impression that he definitely knows what he's talking about. The fact that this book was written decades ago means nothing. We still haven't caught up to him. He's still ahead of us. He was a century ahead of us 20 years ago.

I kept going back to Atkins over and over, but it stopped working for me. Why? Too many calories! Too much freedom to eat too much food.
The truth is, you've got to get your body used to eating less. You have to just gut it out, do it strictly without "treats" and lowcarb cocktails and lowfat iced cream, and get back to basics: mostly lean meats, tons of fruits and veggies.
With an ingenious diet, Tarnower accomplishes just that by retraining the mind and body to eat less, eat lighter, and love it. Yeah, its painful at first! You're hungry! But once you start fat-burning, it feels great. I'm going into it with the attitude that I'm basically in boot camp. :)

The Only Way I've Ever Been Able to Lose Weight!Review Date: 2006-10-04
Tips:
- You WILL be Desperately Hungry, despite what the good doctor says, especially for the first 3 days or so until you adjust. Try diet sodas to help assuage this.
- You must exercise. I found that I did not lose weight on the days that I didn't run a couple of miles. The diet is very low calorie and your metabolism will adjust accordingly if you don't kick it into gear.
- The "Fruit salad every day" may hinder your weight loss. If you're using the alternative lunch with no problem, ignore this one. But I found I often didn't lose weight on the days I used the fruit salad alternative.
Best of luck!
