This is my FAVORITE cookbook and I refer to it time and time again for muffins and other treats that would normally be grain-based. My whole family is gluten free, and I have to be fully grain free. I can't say enough about the book. My favorite is the carrot muffins - YUM! And, if you can't do eggs they work just fine with egg replacer (but add ground flax seed as well to further help them stick together.) Great book!!!!!!!!!

I have this cookbook as well as Breaking the Vicious Cycle, Lucy's SCD Cookbook, and Eat Well Feel Well. This one is my favorite. I love "The World's Best Meat Sauce", which I make thick as recommended for a sloppy joe spooned over the "Basic Bread" recipe. Fantastic! The apple galette disappeared immediately among a group of non-SCD dieters. I also like the cole slaw, and the cappuccino ice cream is fabulous!
I also have Eat Well Feel Well, but find the recipes are expensive and require ingredients not typical even in the SCD kitchen. Since the SCD can be expensive on its own, I have found that I've used that book very rarely. With the exception of nut flours and standard SCD staples, most ingredients used in Grain Free Gourment are reasonably priced and easily located in your neighborhood supermarket. The recipes even include the standard rather than SCD ingredients, so this book will remain a favorite even if strict adherence to SCD is no longer necessary. Thank you Jodi and Jenny for quality recipes that are easy to follow, kitchen tested, and sure to please even non-SCDers. This is a lovely cookbook with beautiful photos. It would be a welcome addition in every SCD kitchen.

There are so many phenomenal recipes in The Grain-Free Gourmet. So far I have made the meatloaf, the spiced honey chicken, the decadent onion crackers, the gourmet pizza, the cranberry muffins, and the lemon-cranberry tarts (also great with blueberries). Everything was delicious and my family members who are not on the SCD enjoyed them all. Bager and Lass did a wonderful job on this book and I look forward to making more items.

I've made several of the muffins in this book, and they're all pretty good. I plan to make a lot more of them. The grain-free baked goods use lots of almonds, other nuts, and eggs. One problem is that the author/editor included no nutritional info. with the recipes. If you're counting calories, fat grams, fiber or carbs, you're on your own. It would be great if they would correct that on a revised edition.

I am already on a lean protein and vegetable diet. I was given this book, and started to read it. I stopped reading it and put it in the yard sale pile when I got to page 18, where Dr Bernard stated emphatically, "carbohydrates boost your metabolism."
I am one of those people that carbohydrates have the opposite effect on me, especially those found in grains, pastas and rice. Instead of boosting my metabolism, these carbohydrates bring it to a standstill. When I eat carbs, I feel bloated and lethargic, NOT energetic. If I were to do as he suggests and eat loads of pasta, rice, baked potatoes, etc., I'd end up weighing twice what I do now.
Be warned that a high carb diet may work for some - even most people - but for those of you who DON'T feel like running a marathon after eating a plate load of pasta, avoid this book at all costs and grab a copy of The South Beach Diet instead.

The book is something interesting, but with no novelty at all. Some old ideas are presented, and there is no data assuring what the author suggests.

I was excercising and following a protein based + minumum carbs diet. My goal was to reduce fat and cholesterol. I read this book and decided to give it a try.
1.- If you are planning to become a vegan this may work for you.
2.- Even though carbos have no fat, your body converts carbs into sugar for energy and sugar becomes fat.
I gain back 2 pounds in a week! Not only that but I grew back 2.5 inches of belly!!
Carbos have been always a problem for me. They surely store in my belly. I was excercising at the time I tried this diet. I was at the gym 3 times a week for at least one hour.
This messed up my fitness program big time. I had to started all over again.
I know some people that had become skinny with this program but MAKE SURE YOUR BODY TYPE will respond to this program before you start. You may be dissapointed. Check with your doctor.

This is the only diet that has worked for me. I have sent this book to a number of my friends, I weighed 365 when I got the book. I have lost 76 pounds. I lose one pound per week. I am at 289 and shooting for 225. I was morbidly obese. I learned a lot. I scorned spuds - now I eat them every day. I thought fish was a diet food. I no longer eat avocadoes or peanuts. A Mickey D double cheezeburger costs me 2 pounds each. It puts on a pound and I dont't lose a pound that week. Same with BK's Whopper JR. I used to buy a double cheeze burger on the way to food shopping -- so I wouldn't be hungery while shopping. I don't do that any more. I am now in the habit of driving straight home after a trip to town and not stopping in for a burger on the way home -- like I used to. I tried all the other diets--and none of them worked. When I go to an all you can eat buffett, I fill up with fruits and vegetables. I am just as full as I used to be eating the non VEGAN food. The first few months on the diet, the VEGAN food would not sustain me for more than about three hours. Now that I have been a VEGAN for some time, the VEGAN diet sustains me as long as the meat diet used to. I went to my friends Bar

I have been searching and searching to find just the right curriculum for my 3 girls, ages 3-9. I picked up this book and my problem about curriculum was solved! Ruth Beechick is sensible beyond measure by offering ways in which to homeschool in a very cost-effective way, while following Charlotte Mason's gentle methods of learning. I highly recommend this book to every homeschooling family who feels like they are a slave to their curriculum.

I first borrowed this book from our public library when my son was in kindergarten. Ruth Beechick's philosophy is clear and it makes sense. She was a text book writer and a public school teacher, so she has some very educated ideas about how children learn. Now my son is in the sixth grade and I am using this book extensively, along with "living books" from our home and public libraries.

Ruth Beechick presents easy-to-implement ideas for the home educator. Her thoughts on living books, copywork, dictation, and writing merge effectively with the Charlotte Mason approach. (You will need to modify Beechick's approach to dictation slightly and let the child study the paragraph before proceeding with the dictation.)
This book will help you gain confidence in your abilities as a home educator.
Excellent in conjuntion with public school curriculum.

We like the helpful and supportive attitudes of the author and feel like we have more control over our daughter's 6th grade public education. As a mother of a child with an auditory processing problem, this book addresses all modalities of learning and acceptance of different learning ways. All parents should read the section about math early on to learn how to help their children earlier. You will feel more hopeful for your child's education after reading this book although you won't ever really be "done" with this book! Very updated book, with an integrated approach and broad vision about nutrition. In fact, this is not exactly about nutrition but of Nutriology, the modern science of nutrition. I think it goes more in hand with the field of natural medicine; excelent for Naturopath.

I've found a great deal of the information in this book useful. It has some fairly detailed biological information, quizzes and suggestions and makes a point of striving for practical suggestions. I especially like the reiterations that optimum health does not mean thirty pills a day! I doubt however that I'll be adopting a raw, vegan diet as is mentioned several times. The rest however, seems to be pretty solid information and is a good base for building a supplementation program.

I bought this book as background information when I started on the Holford Low GL diet, which helped me to lose 35 pounds fast, after a decade of unsuccessful dieting.
The Optimum Nutrition Bible was just that. It explained the causes of a number of various physical conditions that my family, my friends and I were experiencing, and then gave easy-to-implement nutritional guidelines for overcoming these problems.
The data is presented in layman's terms - you don't need a medical degree to understand what he's talking about - and the indexing is good when you need to find something in a hurry.
If your health is important to you, and could be better than it is, this book might be just the thing you need to set you on the road to recovery through the simple advice and nutritional guidelines presented.

My concern about this book is that I found some very specific but blatant errors of information re: one topic the author discusses, and this makes me wonder what other errors he made. The rest of the book might be entirely accurate, but unfortunately when there are such basic conceptual errors (not typos, actual wrong info that is thoroughly discussed and analyzed incorrectly) it calls into question the rest of the info.
In one section, the author discusses sinformation related to exercise physiology and the expenditure of energy during activity. There are several fundamental errors in his information, and this makes me question whether some or much of the other info in this book (other than the exercise physiology info) is also erroneous.
I will share two specific examples of errors in this author's information. First, he states that the fitter you are the more calories you will burn to complete a given task. This is actually the opposite of what is true. Sure, a fitter person likely has a faster resting metabolic rate which means s/he'll burn more calories throughout the day, but to perform a specific task for a specific period of time (as stated in the author's example) the fitter you are the more efficiently your body will perform that task, and the less energy you'll expend to complete it. His basic premise is absolutely wrong, and thus the nutritional advice that he provides stemming out of that info is likely wrong.
The second specific example of a blatant error is when the author states that running a mile burns 300 calories. While I suppose this is potentially true for a few individuals, most exercise physiology experts agree that most people will burn approximately 100 calories to run a mile. Of course the exact number will vary depending on the individual's level o fitness, body weight, the speed at which they run, the terrain (flat, hilly, etc) but most people will burn about 100 calories to run a flat mile, give or take maybe 25 calories. The author's claim of 300 calories is SO far from what is standardly agreed upon as a reasonable ballpark estimate of caloric expenditure it is useless. Unfortunately, the author also then goes on to make nutritional recommendations that stem from this error.
My biggest concern is that if the author made these types of basic errors that demonstrate a fundamental misunderstanding of human physiology, and I caught them only because of my exercise physiology knowledge, how reliable are the author's nutritional recommendations? What other errors has he made that I might not catch if I don't have expertise on some other topic in this book (such as the biochemistry of a specific nutrient). A thorough and accurate understanding of physiology is essential part of the foundation upon which sound nutritional recommendations should be based. I am not convinced that this author has that necessary foundation and for me that makes this book of questionable value.
Carpe diem.

I found the First Aid for Step 2 to be a very helpful and concise review. I was quite dissapointed after buying and reading First Aid for the Match. It contains very little new information that can not be obtained through your college administration or through taking to the residencies themselves. It has very little on special students- older students, students with disabilities, students with a research background. It says little about students who have difficulty matching and have to go through the match a second time. It says little about what to do to make yourself more attractive to a residency who turned you down on the first time. I am sorry, but I would not recommend this book.

I really like this book and am glad I found it. I was not a fan of the First Aid for Step I, and so was leery of using this book but as I looked through it I felt it was very complete.
I have felt sort of clueless about the whole application process and how to figure out what I could do, what fields I wanted to go into, what fields are competitive but still - somehow - I could find a way in. There really aren't a lot of resources on this whole process and word of mouth is not enough. Considering how incredibly important the third/four years are in terms of strategizing for your future, I am surprised how few real resources there are. People talk about the Iverson book but I found it too simplistic.
I also need some handholding in simple areas I might be unfamiliar with, like how to write your personal statement, CV and application and this book does a good job of addressing that. Overall, I think this book is a sleeper and I totally recommend it.

Although they are mere numbers, certainly other additional factors played in major role exemplified as nepotism, connection, US clinical experiences were simply ignored or not mentioned at all. It also lacks prospective point of view of foreign medical graduate and how they have to approach which oftentimes differ greatly from those of American graduates.
No other books showed and listed examples of comprehensive letter of recommendations, Curriculum vitae, personal statements and so ons. One comes to understanding what is required in producing decent documents when faced with these challenges.
Overall, this book shouldn't be a sole example to steer clear your residency positions if you are foreign med grad, but some portions of this book presents with second-to-none series of how to create good documents.

I found it to be really informative. Neustaedter doesn't pull any punches, that's for sure! I guess this book would be characterized as "anti-vax," but it backs everything up with common sense and scientific studies. It's basically just a smart book, and helped me decide about vaccines for my baby. I really liked the way it was written. I'm not very familiar as of yet with homeopathy, and the author gives many homeopathic remedies/healthcare options.

I found this book helpful and objective. For example, this book explains that Hep B becomes a danger when your child is a teenager and makes the choice to use intravenous drugs or have unprotected sex. And by the time infants become teenagers those shots they had as infants are not effective anymore. Facts like this are very helpful. I am only sorry that I was not aware of this sooner since my toddler has had all 3 Hep B shots, the first one was in the hospital, not that I was asked if I wanted my 2 day old newborn to be given the Hep B shot.
I felt sick to my stomach about bringing my infant to his well doctor visits since he was 2 months old because that is when the shots began. I was not aware of any literature then, but I felt in my heart that he was too young and too vulnerable to get 7 vaccinations injected into him (7 vaccinations within 4 shots).
I agreed to 1 shot at 2 months and he took that just fine. Before his 4 month visit I read the book "A Shot in the Dark" and realized there was some unnecessary danger with shots for my infant. I agreed to 2 shots at his 4 month visit. After that I purchased this book and my now 15 month old has had very limited shots and has handled all of them well. I plan on not giving him the DTP and MMR shot at all, and the rest given slowly. My first Pediatrician asked me to leave their office since I was not willing to give my 2 month infant all 7 shots. My current Pediatrician is wonderful and very supportive in my decision to give my son limited shots, because she has seen some horrible reactions and also has seen those children who have had shots still get the disease, in particular the Whooping cough and Measles.
I can honestly say my 15 month old has not been sick yet. All my friends & family have chosen to fully vaccinate their babies and every one of them has been sick more then once before their 1st birthdays. This of course may or may not have to do with the shots, but I kind of wonder if it does.
As parents, we have to make the decisions that we feel are best for our children. And it should be just that - Our decision. After reading this book or others like it, you have to decide which is the lesser of two evils and make the decision that you feel most comfortable with. Just be prepared to be a little nervous either way you go.

This book is a very authoritative treatment of the subject, but that's not what makes it great. Aftel's passion for her subject, conveyed in lyrical, sensuous writing, is incredibly contagious.

Essence & Alchemy was a really wonderful adventure in reading. From the history of perfume to the process, old and new, involved in extracting essences, to the follow-along steps to creating your own perfume, I found this book to be entertaining and informative from the first page to the last. The comparison between perfumery and alchemy was insightful. The illustrations were charming and fun. I learned a lot and was engaged the whole way through! Highly recommended to any fan of unusual nonfiction subjects.

This book is the best concise description of how to make perfumes an and colognes. Mandy Aftel loves her subject and is a real expert, and it shows.
If you are interested in making colognes, perfumes, soaps or lotions, buy this book. Or if you are just interested in perfumes and the different essential oils, also buy it.

As a former Health and Science Editor for American Medical News, I can heartily recommend "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Cholesterol." Dr. Devries offers a wonderful array of information and advice in plain English -- from what to eat and how to exercise to how to understand medical test results and work with your doctor.
One of the best features of this book is the way it merges traditional medicine with alternative approaches. This book does not present a lecture from a know-it-all conservative, traditional doctor or a treatise from a fringe physician on how health food and yoga will save your life. Instead, this book presents a balanced, reasonable approach to strong hearts and healthy lives by a traditionally trained physician who is open to new ideas, as long as they are proven and sensible. Dr. Devries integrates the best of both worlds, traditional and alternative.
Another appealing feature is the fact that some sections and chapters are clearly aimed at those who just want a simple explanation, while other sections and chapters provide detailed information backed up by rigorous research and thoughtful medical expertise for those who want to understand the science behind the suggestions.
Everyone should be as fortunate to have Dr. Devries as his or her personal doctor. The next best thing would be to read his book...and take it to heart.

Dr. Devries did an excellent work in presenting medical research on heart disease and cholesterol in an easy read fashion for the lay person. The manner in which Dr. Devries writes makes heart disease and cholesterol a "a no brainer" to understand is superb. Dr.Devries has been my health coach for the past 4 years. His understanding of the subject has made the world of difference in my understanding my own health. Through his methods, my blood pressure and cholesterol levels are closely monitored and controlled. I am very grateful for his medical care and expertise which is now offered to the world through this book.

A REMARKABLE guide for prevention and personal empowerment! Finally a source which covers a wealthy spectrum of heart healthy directives and wisdom embracing the most timely and best of Integrative Medicine.
DR. Devries presents valuable heart healthy information on every page including many helpful charts and guidlines. He also includes very informative references and resources. The book is comprehensive and oriented to achieve the most favorable results in a practical manner. Doing the advice is becoming and being more healthy. The sections entitled "TAKE THIS TO HEART" at the end of each chapter provide the salient points on which to take action.
Dr. Devries is to be commended for going a different way and presenting a program which is AUTHENTICALLY prevention oriented,a rare find in the all too often mechanistic medical model which dominates the "health" system. His holistic practice is humanizing, personalizing, and consequently truly healing in nature. The book is in layman's language and an easy read.
