Goldmine! I'm very picky, and love this little book.Review Date: 2007-11-08
I've thumbed through stevia (and general diabetic-friendly) recipe books in book stores and have been disappointed in the recipes that mostly try to overdose on fat and other sugars (concencrated white grape juice etc.) to make up for the lost sugar. I cringe when I pick up a recipe book that uses Maltitol or Xylitol or Chemic-it-all etc etc.
This book has healthy fun recipes that use stevia sensibly, within reason and within its limits. The author seems to have really done a lot of test-kitchen work and found ways to make stevia blend easily into foods. I went through on the first sitting and put post-it notes on at least 15 pages. Unusual for a recipe book.
I like the spiral binding also. On anything other than a cookbook I find it annoying, but having to crack the binding of a cookbook just to get it to lay flat (and it never does) is no good. The spiral-binding here is perfect.
I'd only wish there to be photographs included (there are a few simple line drawings for decorative effect) but I know that adding photographs adds greatly to the cost of the book production so I'm grateful that the cost is low instead. My monthly book budget can get out of hand otherwise.
The stevia recipes use unsweetened applesauce here and there for a replacement of the bulk of the sugar. A lot of whole wheat *pastry* flour, which I'll have to look for but I understand the health and recipe value of it.
The *type* of Stevia one uses is important, of course. The little coffee-shop stevia packets have a lot of filler inside, so one can't use those. Pure Stevia Extract powder (85-95% Glycosides) as is sold in bulk, or found at Trader Joe's (as noted by the author) is used throughout the book, as well as an alternative Green Stevia Powder (minimally processed, ground green stevia leaf). A small few of the recipes make use of your 1/8 and even 1/16 teaspoons, so have those handy.
Here are a few of the recipes I've got lined up to try: a great granola recipe that doesn't depend on a honey base, Oatmeal Banana Bread, Roasted Squash Onion & Cheese Pie, Fudgy Brownies (uses some butter and yogurt, btw), Chocolate Chip Cookies, Moist Banana Cake, Cream Puffs, Apple Nut Crisp, and a few more.
I was happily surprised to find more than just dessert recipes. The author has included many other basics (sauces, cake frostings, main dishes, beverages) that I hadn't thought of.
I'm going to keep this one in my cupboard and just snag recipes here and there from other sources, online and in the bookstore. This is the book I want to actually own.

"Enjoy the benefits of medical progress and the body's natural defenses."Review Date: 2008-10-02
This book is an informative and eye-opening look at the mechanisms of cancer, explained in a way that a layman can understand. There are many helpful charts, tables, and illustrations that clarify the sometimes technical information about the latest research on the genesis and progression of cancer. The author maps out how rogue cells are nourished and conversely, how they can be starved of the nourishment that they need to multiply. Although researchers have undoubtedly made a great deal of progress, Servan-Schreiber assures us that we have a long way to go before we can declare victory over the many types of cancer that still plague mankind. In addition, he includes well-chosen quotations from literature (such as Tolstoy's "The Death of Ivan Ilyich"), philosophy, and other physicians and scientists to illustrate his points, some of which deal with our fear of dying without having lived a full and meaningful life.
"Anti-Cancer" is a personal, touching, instructive, and thought-provoking. Whether or not the reader is interested in adopting the author's recommendations concerning diet, exercise, meditation, and other lifestyle changes, no one who completes this book will ever think about cancer or about the human body in quite the same way. Servan-Schreiber is not a new-age charlatan who advocates far-out therapies. Everything that he suggests is based on solid and well-documented research, and he includes numerous citations from scientific journals.
Although no one wants to confront a fatal illness, Servan-Schreiber contends that his battle with cancer has had a positive aspect. "By exposing life's brevity, a diagnosis of cancer can restore life's true flavor." Forced for the first time to look into his soul and evaluate his approach to living, he realized that he had been caught up in a treadmill that allowed him little time to appreciate the importance of mind-body equilibrium, inner peace, relationships with loved ones, and personal fulfillment. Everyone, no matter what the state of his or her health, can benefit from this stimulating and provocative work.

The Metabolic PlanReview Date: 2007-12-03
Some great information but missing some important health infoReview Date: 2007-08-16
There were many things I thought were well-done in this book. Cherniske has a conversational writing tone, so it's a fun read. There's alot of useful health information on diet, lifestyle, medical tests, supplements, etc.
This book overall seems to be addressed only at people whose health is declining due to poor diet, exercise, age, lifestyle, lack of vitamins, etc. The biggest thing missing is that there is no mention of food intolerances/allergies, which are quite common and can contribute to mysteriously declining health! In a book that was meant to be a comprehensive guide to staying younger longer, I would expect to find a Chapter on this, or at least a page! But it isn't even mentioned in the Nutritional chapter. So you could follow Cherniske's plan but if you have an underlying health issue, you'll still feel unwell.
My advice - declining health even though you "eat well," exercise, and sleep plenty? Make sure you don't have food allergies/intolerances or some other type of chronic issue that won't go away with exercise and supplements.

Learn how easy it is to be youngerReview Date: 2006-10-11
Here are the diet guidelines:
1. Eat at least 30 grams of fiber a day.
2. Consume 4 to 5 cups of colorful fruits and vegetables a day.
3. Reduce saturated fat and shun trans fats.
4. Choose healthy omega-3 fats.
5. Substitute whole grains for highly processed, refined foods.
6. Seek out foods rich in calcium and magnesium.
7. Hydrate. (Eight cups of water a day).
8. Save room for a healthy dessert.
9. Watch your portion sizes.
10. Select healthy snacks. (Fruits, vegetables, and nuts).
He also has a plan for fitness, relaxation, detoxification, and what supplements to take. I have read 50 other books on diet and nutrition and completely agree with this authors suggestions.
The author discusses how our modern day lifestyle of refined foods, little exercise, and high stress are accelerating our aging. He does a great job simplifying the solution and showing how to live a much healthier life.
Read this book, it could extend your life span by 10 years or more.
Sound Advice, But Nothing NewReview Date: 2008-06-23
Dr Masley goes on to explain what causes accelerated aging. No surprises here either. They are oxidative stress, diet, metablic syndrome, physical inactivity, chronic stress, toxins, inflammation. Nothing new here. For people who have been reading health books, this chapter will sound like a boring repetition. However, I think Dr Mansely does a good job of debunking low carb diets.
Then, there is a chapter on "sweet 16" vitality foods. No surprises in the list - except for one - chocolates! Like many health gurus, Dr Mansley advocates supplements that apart from the usual things, include selenium, ginger and garlic.
Chapter 6 is all about fitness. I totally agree with his advice on strength training in addition to aerobic training. He also advises on practical, easy to do exercises like walking. It's a pity there's only one chapter.
Chapter 7 is all about relaxation. Very little information here except that sleep is important, meditate, be positive, share love and intimacy etc.
Next 2 chapters deal with detox and skin rejuvenation. Again, very simple advice that is easy to follow.
Part 2 of the book introduces the program itself in 3 phases. Dr Mansley actually gives you a daily time-table for your various routines. Recipes, exercise routine, relaxation routine, supplement routine and detox routine are all listed. This part is probably all that makes the book worth buying. The routines are very simple and easy to follow. I'm quite sure anyone following it faithfully will succeed in looking and feeling younger. Whether he/she is going to look as young as his/her cousins 10 years his/her junior will be a subject for debate.
If you're tired of extreme stuff and need an anti-aging book with simple, useful routines to follow, then buy this book. The info is factual and reliable. If you are already a fan of the subject of anti-aging, nothing inside is unfamiliar. You may just want to skip it.

The Best Book Available On Eating ProblemsReview Date: 2007-09-17
Elyse gives practical, applicable methods to evaluate your eating in light of God's Word. Even if you didn't have an eating disorder of any kind, reading this book and applying God's Truths will bring you closer to Him and bring you freedom from any habitual sin that you struggle with.
I have read other books by Elyse Fitzpatrick and they have all been very instrumental in helping me overcome my self focused eating problems and move on to a mature life as a Christian.
Because of the Lord and reading His Word and Elyse's book, I have overcome a horrific eating disorder and haven't retreated back to old habits and dysfunctional ways of thinking. Elyse goes in to much depth about how powerful your thought life is.
I think that if you truly want to change and you are ready to allow God to change your heart, there is no other book that I have found that has helped me so much.
She is encouraging and I'm so thankful to God for bringing this book to my attention. You won't be disappointed.

Little Sugar Addicts Changed Our LifeReview Date: 2006-09-22
Then, I read "Little Sugar Addicts" to help my children. "Little Sugar Addicts" helped me guide my family through the process of healing their sugar addiction. It had everything we needed: easy to follow step-by-step instructions, recipes, ideas for the holidays and inspiring stories from other parents. The transformation of my children was amazing. What's more, Kathleen's program is a lifestyle change, not a quick fix or a bunch of other things to buy. It is economical, simple and it works. Our family has been healed by this book and I highly recommend it.
This book will answer so many questions parent have!Review Date: 2004-11-04
Before Kathleen's program my kids would whine, scream, hit, be totally out of control, throw tantrums and in general, I didn't like them very much a lot of the time. I couldn't understand what I was doing wrong?!? How could I feel this way about my kids and what could I do about it? No amount of parenting advice or classes could change what was going on with them. Well, after getting myself steady on Kathleen's program I started to look at my kids diet. It took a little time and adjustment, but now by feeding them differently and at consistant times they are mostly fun, loving, compassionate, focused, easy to talk to and the joys I always knew they were. Food was the answer, pure and simple!
Get this book if you've ever had those feelings of helplessness with your kids. It will change your life and your families life!

This book gives it to you straight re: excersize, nutrition, and lifestyle habits that promote lasting health. It's expecially poignant for woman .. but applies to all. Great for those who lack motivation and who think the mountain to physical well being is just too great OR for those who think they just don't have time for themselves. Joyce did her homework. It's an easy read and technically sound.
HIGHLY recommend it!
