The Child Health Guide is hands down the best, holistic book on pregnancy & parenting that I have found yet. I'm still learning stuff that I didn't know -- stuff that helps with my 15 year old!!
The author holds a degree in Oriental Medicine and focuses on scientific information to teach you to make healthier choices for you and your family.

Here's a sampling: Plastic Toys and Phthalates; Environmental Toxins In The Home; Chemicals To Avoid In Shampoo; Why Avoid Soy?; Which Sweeteners Are (Relatively) Safe & Sweeteners To Avoid; DHA Supplementation, Cod Liver Oil Nutrient Content, Fats For Children, etc.; The Most Important Foods To Avoid; Principles Of Holistic Pediatrics For Parents; Vaccines -- Making An Informed Choice.

There is an entire section that focuses on managing acute illness, treatment at home & when to seek outside help.

There is so much more. This IS the book to get for someone looking to get pregnant and raise healthy children!!

Foor for thought

I am not a die hard holistic follower so I found some of the advice a littel too extreme for my personal taste. Although, while extreme, if definitely provides food for thought.

When I first started this book, I was concerned that it would be too general for me, as I'm pretty granola already. But as I kept reading, I was pleasantly surprised! It turned out to have lots of great info I didn't know before...I'm really glad I found it! It's a good overview of basic child healthcare, and gives lots of practical advice. Because I read it, I'll know not to panic if my child should get a fever that sounds high to me, for instance...Neustaedter explains why fevers can be beneficial, and when to leave them alone, and when to help them go down naturally. There are lots of other great tips, as well as homeopathic remedies.

Best Baby Book Ever

This is so important for new parents and parents who want to make more informed choices with their second or third etc.
The philosophy behind this book is "don't just believe what your pediatrician is telling you to do". Expand your beliefs and resources for the health of your child. There's so much solid info regarding dietary and environmental influences on your child's health, it's amazing.
We would have done things very differently in regards to our son's "spitting up" issues had we read this book earlier and not just followed the advice of our pediatirican to jump on meds which never worked anyway. Fortunately once we saw meds weren't improving the situation we looked further for an osteopath and a homeopath who actually were more effective in resolving his reflux / spitting up issues.
So hooray for Randall Neustaedter for writing this enlightening book!
It's a must have for all.

The Basics ( you won't get from your doctor)

This kind of information can be difficult to get your hands on... What plastics are safe? Do you need to filter your water and what kind is best? What about vaccines and flouride? What tests are necessary for the newborn? Some other topics include: newborn basics, how to co-sleep safely, and how to wrap a matress to reduce the incidence of SIDS.
Nutrition is covered, including allergies. For instance, did you know soy is NOT an appropriate food for babies? For parents who need to give formula there are several recipes for home-made formulas (milk-based, goatmilk-based, liver-based, and how to supplement store-bought formulas).
Other pertinant information includes teething, common childhood illnesses (colds, fevers, ear-aches, etc.) with explanations on how and when to treat with homeopathic remedies, along with chapters about each stage of childhood.
This book is a must-own for ALL PARENTS who want the straight facts in one easy-to-read format.

I got this book hoping to read about the science behind grains and how our bodies process them. (I have been trying to eat healthier) This book advocates a lot of junk food surprisingly, and it geared entirely to celiac disease. I was under the impression that it would be good for anyone just thinking about giving up grains, but it was not. I only gave this 2 stars because I didn't like it, if you have celiac disease and do not want to eat a raw food diet, than you would like it more.

This is a vrey helpful book

My husband asked, "Another book about gluten free living. How many do you need"
This should have been the first book I bought. Is is very helpful with lots of detail without getting so technical I get lost. I now have a far better understanding of my disease and how to more successfully live with it.
I especially appreciate the parts intended to help me deal with the depression and feelings of isolation. And, the anger because so many just don't get how difficult it is to live this lifestyle. This diet is very labor and emotionally intensive that there are many times I just want to give up. Even the dietitian to whom I was referred knew less than I.

Read this book if you are especially newly diagnosed. It will help get your through some rough times.

What a plethora of information!

Danna has taken what can be an overwhelming process and broken it into a seamless set of sections that have served me as a reference to my four year old's allergy needs. Korn gives a lay manner of understanding celiac sprue, wheat-free, gluten free and other issues that manifest from these special diets. She gives personal examples and guides the reader into being a positive person with an outlook towards family changes in order to keep everyone balanced.

I thought I was buying a cookbook! This book does have many recipes in it but...Much to my suprise I bought this book and found out that I had Celiacs disease! I couldn't figure out what was wrong with me and no one else knew either! This book explains allergy as well as the disease side of gluten. People with either will appreciate and benefit from this book tremendously! Thank you for the wake up call that changed my life!

I read the book and use it often as a reference to foods I should/shouldn't eat. I also love the symptoms and useful advice about living gluten free. I feel much more knowledgeable about the subject after reading this book! I also love the recipes!! :)

I have found this book to be very helpful with my diet. The recipes are great. I have lost ten pounds since I bought this book a month ago. I am also trying to regulate my sugar and I believe this diet plan is helping me. It is not hard to do and I am not hungry between meals.

If you follow this book, you will lose weight. A family member turned us on to this diet, and my husband and I both lost tons of weight, and we saw quick results. A few other family members have had nothing but good results from this book as well. The best part, is that the book teaches you healthly ways to eat, so after a while you don't even need the book, you just learn what foods are "good foods". I lost 15lbs and my husband lost over 30lbs. Every now and then when we get stuck in a rut and feel like we put on a few pounds, we go right back to the diet and follow the book, and off comes the weight again. We both experience more enegery when following this diet, and have the urge to excercise more. We have been very happy with this over the many other diets we have tried.

Great Diet, but this book could be better

I love this diet. It's easy and I am never hungry. However, this book was too confusing in explaining how to figure out meals on your own. I got this book over year ago and then quit because I didn't understand it enough to succeed without following the meal plans. Then recently I read The zone, and the way it broke foods down into blocks of food and how many grams per block, was an eye opener. Now I am back to this book with it's superior recipes and meal ideas.

I am giving this book 3 stars because I think they make figuring out the forumula too complicated. In the Zone it's easy-peasy. I've also dinged it one star for not having an index. We need an index!!! My book is covered in post-its! That's two dings off. The remaining three stars, however, are well deserved; The recipes and meal plans are very good.

Results like you never have seen!

The only diet that works. Yes it takes a bit to get the hang of it in the begining, but the weight melts away. Easily lost 15 pounds in the first 2 weeks with the fat flush menu. After a month, 20 pounds gone and dropped the blood pressure from 160/90 to 120/80 during that time with no excercise. Will no begin that and look to drop the remaining weight to meet goal. Balancing your body by the food we eat makes this a successful diet and one that will change the way you eat for life.

for starters, I don't understand how granulated fructose is commercially available to people. 2nd, I have no idea why the authors of this book actually think it's not unhealthy to add such large amounts of granulated fructose to your meals. do a google search for "dangers of fructose" to see what I mean. everything from exacerbating gout to decreasing nitric oxide levels in the blood to being the most unhealthy form of carbohydrate a diabetic can ingest. don't be fooled into thinking it's ok to use because it "comes from fruit!"

This book offers a wide variety of treatment options (dietary/ behavioral modification, use of various supplements) in the treatment of hypertension, as well as a comprehensive review of the prescription medications available for this condition. I found the dietary suggestions quite helpful, and this is one of the few books I have read which offers sound advice on use of dietary supplements as well as their presumed mechanism of action.

All in all, very good reading. Nothing new here, just ties together all facets of controlling your high blood pressure: vitamins, supplements, exercise, diet and stress reduction. Presents a variety of programs and explains in detail how each can potentially lower and control hypertension. A good "how to" book to keep handy and refer to often. I have started the program and after only 3 weeks, my blood pressure has dropped. I plan to "wean" myself off the high blood pressure medication I am on now and go "totally natural".

We're trying to eat a healthier diet as a family, so I've been hunting for cookbooks to help. A lot of recipes in this category would be too "weird" for my kids to try--they'd just turn up their noses at it. This cookbook offers many kid-friendly recipes, plus has a chapter on helping your kids eat a healthier diet in general. The only complaint I have is that the dinner section falls back on some of those "weird" recipes that I know my kids would never touch, plus many recipes that call for some unusual ingredients like lamb--not a staple in my corner of the world.

I am a fan of Kim's and I've often read Lara's articles in Self, M&F Hers, etc., so I was very happy to see this book come out. Kim's considerate and smart coaching style really came out in this book; the one thing I love about her is that she seems so kind for someone so beautiful. They both did a superb job on this book.

The recipies were my favorite part and they were very yummy (although some looked better in the book than in my kitchen). The excercises were good although my favorite parts were the nutritional information and motivation segments.

Definitely a must have for anyone trying to improve their diets and/or excercise programs.

I think this book has a wealth of knowledge. It helps you set small goals to help you work towards the overall goal. It took me a minute to figure out the exercise part, because it doesn't list reps, you do what you can in 30 seconds. If you need to get motivated to move this is the book. She starts you out slow and you progress through the 12 weeks.

She makes me feel as if she is explaining this in person to me!

I really enjoyed reading this book. I'm a fan of "The Biggest Loser", so I wanted to read her thoughts on weight loss. The book is well-written and very easy to read. The book is divided into four subjects: It's All About You(Gear, Mind, Body, Goals; Journals; Fitness); Your Workout(Exercises); Your Nutrition (Food; Meal Planning); Your Future. I found the section on posture(Chapter 2) to be interesting. She goes into the different types of posture, which is helpful to me.....I have a swayback posture. She lists the muscles that I would need to work on to correct this bad posture. I haven't found too many authors who expound on this subject in a diet book. At the end of each chapter, she gives you "homework." Suggestions to help you prepare for this program, which ultimately is a lifestyle change. These suggestions are not mandatory, or hard to do. I am finding the "homework" is helping me to plan better and be well organized in my approach to beginning this program. This was lacking in my earlier attempts at losing weight. She is very big on planning and writing things down. There are three levels of weight training exercises, and there are some stretching moves. There are pictures of her performing each step to an exercise so that you do it correctly. I can't say that the information in this book is new, but it is the way that she presents it that makes the difference to me along with a few things that she does personally to motivate herself. I feel that the book is written as if she were sitting in a room explaining this in person to me. I felt her enthusiasm as I was reading. I've read other good diet books, but I can honestly say that I didn't feel any real enthusiasm coming from the authors. I think that this is a good book. She shows you how to safely go about losing weight, being healthy, and keeping the weight off for good. I highly recommend it.

Life Inside The Thin Cage" is a painfull but eye opening view into the twisted world of chronic dieting and hating our bodies to the point that we are hurting ourselves. Every woman should read this book. I promise when you start to read this book you wont be able to put it down. A must read for women! im greatfull i found this book. I have a much deeper understanding of what it really means to be a chronic dieter.
When i first heard the words eating disorder, the first thing that comes to my mind is anorexic or bulimic, When i see someone always worrying about their weight or have heard someone say "im on a diet" you rarely think that this person could have a problem because hearing those words "im on a diet" is so common, most dont give it a second thought. Hearing women worry over carbs/calories/exercise/fat grams etc.. is sadly perfectly normal. It wasnt untill i read this book that i began to realize that chronic dieting is too a disorder, if we dont see someone who is grossly underweight we assume they are fine, there just on a diet! Im glad i read this book. It was a wake up call for me as well as the others i shared this book with.

I happened upon this book by 'chance' (in other words, the hand of God, in my opinion) and when I read the back, a tear trickled down my face.

Having been overweight much of my life and now being a chronic dieter, I could resonate with Constance's words - I think those thoughts she expressed. I don't fit the DSM-IV diagnoses for bulimia or anorexia. I'm 'different'. She is so right - there is a constant battle going on in my mind regarding weight, eating, and exercising. I am addicted to food AND exercising. It governs my every waking thought and even governs my day and how I spend my time. It's insane, I know. Finding balance is something I am working on. The sad thing? Losing weight DEFINITELY changed my life (I lost 70 lbs) and people DO treat you differently (I've never been treated better than I have in the the years since I lost weight). So, it's hard not to be addicted to dieting when the results are so positive. But are they healthy? That is something I am working out. Thank you, Constance, for speaking what I feel!!!!

We can draw on the stories of others to find our way out. Constance manages to talk openly about her struggle with a sub clinical ED which allows the reader to find shelter and acceptance. Fellow sub ED journeymen will realize they are not alone and there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I believe her willingness to be vulnerable and create a public medium for sub clinical ED materialwill spur an increase in hope and help. The frustrating reality of our weight, our identity our ability to feel at "peace" with living is exhausting. When you read the pages of the "Thin" Cage a framework is given to your experience--you will recognize your behavior, your feelings, your habits, your rituals. And then you will realize you too want Balance. Constances' material will help you find the path to balance. Good reading!

She was a text book writer and a public school teacher, so she has some very educated ideas about how children learn. Now my son is in the sixth grade and I am using this book extensively, along with "living books" from our home and public libraries.

Ruth Beechick presents easy-to-implement ideas for the home educator. Her thoughts on living books, copywork, dictation, and writing merge effectively with the Charlotte Mason approach. (You will need to modify Beechick's approach to dictation slightly and let the child study the paragraph before proceeding with the dictation.)

This book will help you gain confidence in your abilities as a home educator.

Excellent in conjuntion with public school curriculum.

We like the helpful and supportive attitudes of the author and feel like we have more control over our daughter's 6th grade public education. As a mother of a child with an auditory processing problem, this book addresses all modalities of learning and acceptance of different learning ways. All parents should read the section about math early on to learn how to help their children earlier. You will feel more hopeful for your child's education after reading this book although you won't ever really be "done" with this book! I have been searching and searching to find just the right curriculum for my 3 girls, ages 3-9. I picked up this book and my problem about curriculum was solved! Ruth Beechick is sensible beyond measure by offering ways in which to homeschool in a very cost-effective way, while following Charlotte Mason's gentle methods of learning. I highly recommend this book to every homeschooling family who feels like they are a slave to their curriculum.

I think of supplements as an insurance policy.

The main reason that I take USANA is that the supplements are Bioavailable. Many vitamins do not dissolve quickly enough (20 minutes or less) to be used by the body. To test, place vitamins in a glass of water. If they don't dissolve within 20 minutes or so, they are likely not going to be absorbed by your body.

This book helped me to understand that not all vitamins are the same, and, that some of the most popular vitamins may not be fully absorbed. Things are often not as they seem.

I have been using vitamins and food supplements since 2003, and realized "deep down" that I was doing the right thing. However, I was looking for a body of well-researched evidence to back up my belief. This book gave me that.

It contains medical evidence (sometimes quite technical) of the critical importance of nutritional supplements in the overall well-being of a person's health. Dr. Strand discusses the basis of major diseases, and how vitamins can help.

I realized, too, that the money I have spent buying good-quality vitamins has been worth it, because not all vitamins are created equal. You get what you pay for.

I found this book most empowering and exciting with regard to taking control of my health.

Dr Strand begins his most enlightening book by telling us about his wife's debilitating condition, diagnosed as fibromyalgia. In a situation whereby they had nothing to lose, Mrs Strand took some vitamin supplements and her condition gradually but almost miraculously improved.

Virtually overnight, Dr Strand became a "converted doctor". It's certainly not very scientific for a doctor to make such conclusions based on anecdotal evidence, but Dr Strand goes on to identify and explain the root cause of many serious ailments from heart disease to cancer as "oxidative stress".

He describes our bodies as "rusting away" from metabolic activities that consume oxygen and release harmful free radicals. He provides a simple answer on how to win the battle from within - reduce oxidative stress by increasing the amount of antioxidants in the body.

Why is the significance of homocysteine in patients prone to heart attacks and strokes discovered so late? Why don't doctors recommend Coenzyme Q10 as a supplement to reduce the risk of heart attack? Why are vitamin B supplements ignored while cholesterol lowering drugs drugs are prescribed with such enthusiasm? Dr Strand goes into the politics and economics of medical research which may make him some enemies in the fraternity.

Whether it's cardiomyopathy, cancer prevention, arthritis or autoimmune disorders, Dr Strand's advice seems focussed on optimal doses (higher than RDA doses) of various vitamins, minerals, glutathione, alpha-lipoic acid and supplements like glucosamine sulphate and grape seed extract. Dr Strand provides lots of anecdotal evidence on how these supplements can work for a wide range of illnesses. It does look like vitamin C and E are good for almost every condition. His attacks on money-driven physicians get tiring after a while. I personally think that he didn't have to explain why most doctors don't want to recommend cheap supplements that reduce the number of indications for heart or orthopaedic surgery.

Do I believe in Dr Strand's theories? Well, as far as the need for optimal levels of vitamins, minerals and even herbal supplements is concerned, I agree. Whether remarkable recoveries recounted from the good doctor's practice are typical is something for which I have my reservations.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that the wellness industry is already booming even before Dr Strand wrote this book. Expensive vitamins, nutritional supplements and other healthcare and wellness products are all over the pharmacies and even supermarkets, often promoted by aggressive sales people with limited medical knowledge. I wouldn't say that these folks are more concerned about their potential customers' health than doctors who discourage their patients from spending so much on supplements that don't really work for their condition.

This book rolls back some of the falacious defensiveness of traditional medical thinking and shows the existing bias against nutritional medicine.

Dr Strand is blunt and forthright about his findings and is careful to give credit to the treatments that were effective, and to identify those that were not. He does not decry pharmaceuticals nor does he promise nutritionals as the end of all cures. Instead, he advocates the use of them in combination when possible. His writing does reveal a competition between pharmaceutically trained physicians and those who dispense and recommend nutritionals.

His case studies are excellent, and he retains a sense of reality and knowledgable insight afforded him by his traditional medical training that has now been tempered by his own experience.

If you want the truth on nutritional medicine, which is sorely lacking in our medical schools who are in some ways subsidized by big pharma, this will please you...and perhaps even make you more healthy.
