As far as I am concerned, '8 Minutes in the Morning to a Flat Belly' was a total waste of my money. I've been following this workout and eating plan for over four months now and have seen no reduction in neither my belly size nor my weight. Frankly, I was seeing more results from my old Denise Austin Low Impact Aerobic Workout tape than this, so it looks like I'm saying goodbye to Jorge and going back to Denise. Sorry Jorge, I gave it my best shot but your plan just doesn't work for me.

Jorge Cruise has built a successful career around weight loss through books, appearances and his website. His personal experience struggling with weight as a young child and adult have won him over an audience that can relate. With this kit the New York Times Best selling author guarantees users will lose up to 6" in less than 4 weeks. I think it's more important to focus on the increased muscle strength and tone your body will have rather than the number of inches lost and that's how I went into this review.

This 8 Minutes in the Morning to a Flat Belly Kit includes an instructional CD (not DVD) of a 33 minute personal coaching session with Jorge and 26 daily workout cards made of very thick cardstock. The purpose of this kit is to help busy people lose two pounds a week by getting their muscles to burn fat 24/7.

THE CD

The CD Breakdown:

* Intro/Welcome
* Get Ready to Start
* How to Lose 6" in 4 Weeks
* Kit Overview
* Your New Life
* Your Challenge

Jorge explains the focus of this kit is using exercises to build muscle, not increasing your cardio like most weight loss programs. Cardio is good for your heart but it's not effective for weight loss but still he recommends some form of cardio activity three times a week for 20-30 minutes to strengthen your heart muscle. The exercises restore metabolism by building muscles that will burn more calories than fat. Jorge swears the biggest cause of muscle loss is fad diets.

As for eating, Jorge only touches on this. He wants participants to eat to make muscle, avoiding calorie counting, eat every three hours (breakfast, lunch, supper, two snacks and an evening treat), use the Cruise down plate (visual image of protein, carbs, veggies on your plate) and stop eating three hours before bed. The biggest asset here is the flat belly planner (you make copies for each day of the week) to organize and log success by tracking food, water and exercise.

He touches a bit on emotional eating and again touts his website for 24/7 support and meal plans but I couldn't find anything other than ads to buy meals, books and vitamins. The CD closes with an inspirational talk about enjoying your life.

THE CARDS

The specialized fold out cards are a multi level "strength training plan". Each card contains four one minute moves which you repeat once giving you an 8 minute workout. There is a card for every day of the week with a weekend card covering both Saturday and Sunday.

There are three levels of intensity to choose from. Level 1 is for the beginner and requires no equipment other than a chair, table, wall and the kit box. Jorge recommends everyone start at level one. If you haven't had any physical activity, I totally agree. Level 1 is by no means for wimps but it is doable. After 8 minutes you can definitely tell you've worked your muscles. Level 2 is more challenging; again, with only a chair and wall as your required equipment. In Level 3 the exercises are advanced using a fitness ball and medicine ball. The three levels are colour coded in pink, yellow, and blue for easy searching.

If you follow the recommended cards you only actually work the belly 3 times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). Tuesday is for the upper body and Thursday is for the lower body. On Sunday Jorge recommends a body cleanse using a Psyllium shake. The card and CD recommend you visit his website for further details on the shake but all I found was a link to buy the powdered product. The natural Psyllium husk can be found in a bulk food store if you need more fiber in your diet.

The cards also contain a Power Thought and Visualization. Jorge Thoughts provide useful suggestions for improving your health and mental wealth. Some of the visualizations are corny, i.e. visualizing a first date with someone after you've reached your goal and their response to your body. The first week of visualizations center around how others see you, looking better to get a response from others and feeling better because of their response. Sometimes there are hints on emotional eating and success stories about people who have used Jorge's plan.

Does it work? Yes, but like any routine meant to put you in shape it is a life long plan of action, not a miracle cure. This kit is easy to understand and the exercises are doable. Obese people can do these exercises (week one and two anyway) but might have to slightly modify the moves due to surrounding flesh and extra weight. I found it helpful to have a small minute timer to do the one minute exercises as there are no repetitions to keep track of. I felt reasonably energized after only 8 minutes. It actually works out to ten if you include the warm up and cool down stretches.

Even if you didn't follow his dietary suggestions these exercises will be of benefit. If only 8 minutes a day can improve your life it's worth trying and we all can spare 8 minutes for some activity. Reviewed by M. E. Wood.

I really love the exercises in this book, and they really do help me! I have been adding more than just these exercises to my routine (mostly walking), but for toning, I love these.

As for the rest of the book, I am not sure that I agree with his ideas. If you are looking just for some great exercises to do in a small amount of time, this is an awesome book!

An oldie, but a goodie. The original lifestyle is still the very best.

In 1998, I lost over 50 pounds on the original Atkins Lifestyle diet, the book I am reviewing now. In 2004, after the birth of my child, I needed to lose the 20 pounds that I gained whilst expecting. I went back on the original diet and lost in in about 4 months or less.

The original tried and true Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution allowed me to lose about four pounds to kick the diet off in the first week, gave me a ton of energy, and gradually allowed me to lose the rest of the weight after the introduction without problems or cravings.

I have lived on this diet for nearly 10 years and have never gained back the weight that I had lost (except for expecting a child). It's been easier to maintain weight loss with this lifestyle/diet than any other diet I have been on.

Some people have a very difficult time following the diet. If one is a vegan, this diet will really never work, if one is addicted to processed wheat flour and sugar...there's hope. In about a week one loses that addiction.

This diet/lifestyle has been given a bad name by various groups, physicians and people. I believe that those whom disagree with this diet only focus on the "Induction" period.

Here's a glimpse inside this diet: It's basically knowing how many complex carbohydrates your body can handle on a daily bases (instead of calories) and it's about cutting out all processed foods. It works on the premise that sugar carbohydrates make a person fat, not fat.

I tried the current, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. It is my understanding that this diet was modified by a corporation that purchased Dr. Atkins products and rights when he went into retirement. This diet focuses on promoting their bars, shakes, and other convenient items. I really didn't care for that. Those things slow down one's progress and keep you dependant on convenient foods that really aren't that good for you. I also went on the official Atkins site and joined their message board. There's a lot of very crabby people on that message board. I'm guessing that this new diet isn't working very well for them either.

In the late 90's my weight ballooned to 205 pounds while I drank 1/2 a gallon of Coke a day.

The revelation that I was fat came when my students began calling me "Drew Carey" and my uncle called me butterball.

I started Atkins Thanksgiving 2000. By April 2001 my weight had gone from 205 to 165.

This diet, in conjunction with proper exercise, will probably enhance weightloss for many people, unlike any other apporach they have tried.

After the publication of "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution," this older version seems to have been neglected. Mostly this is good because while it's a great book and I enjoyed reading it, Dr. Atkins' understanding of things has come a long way since he wrote it.

For example, the old version recommends almost zero carbohydrates and doesn't take fiber into account. The new book recommends no less than 20g of net carbohydrates, and fiber can be subtracted from the total count for any food since it doesn't raise blood sugar.

In the old version, the first phase was simply called "Phase 1" and lasted only one week; now it is called "Induction" and lasts 2 weeks. Since it includes more carbs, it can be adhered to for up to six months.

Dr. Atkins puts a big emphasis on ketone strips. The new program includes using them, but downplays them. Many people - like me - have trouble getting even light pink on our best days. I think downplaying, while still leaving the option there, is the best thing to do.

Other differences just have to do with the passage of time. 30 years ago Splenda wasn't on the market, so there is no mention of it. Same with cyclomates. Who today has heard of this sweetener? And the cure for constipation then was a mild laxative. Nowadays fiber supplements are on the market and are the recommended thing.

The only part of the book I skipped was the recipes, though if you are into cooking it would be a really awesome part to look through. It takes up significant space, so if you are looking for low carb recipes, the book might be worth the price just for that.

I loved the end of the book and wish that section had been included in the new one. It's Dr. Atkins' statement to the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition of Human Needs on April 12, 1973 (very early versions of the book do not include this). He does a wonderful job of defending his diet to the naysayers. I highly recommend reading this section of the book.

One last thing, the weight chart at the back of the book is not realistic in today's world. It's based on the old version of the Met Life charts. The new version allows people to weigh more, and I know my body just stalls out my weight loss at 145. On the old Met Life chart that was too much. On the new one it is a perfectly normal weight.

I recommend this book as a good history lesson in how the diet began, but to lose weight I recommend "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution," which has the advantage of 30 years' worth of learning that the doctor didn't have when he wrote the first book.

About the book - not the diet

I'm assuming you're reading this because you want to know if this book is worth your money and time, and whether or not you should read it.

If this is not the case, you can skip the rest of this review, and read most of the others - which I have found to be largely testimonial, and will tell you what those reviewers think about the diet.

If you want to know something about the book: read on.

Firstly, I had a very difficult time reading this book - in fact, I skipped most of it, because a very large portion of the book is made up of extended testimonial-like cases. This made the book feel like marketing - and even if you're not as suspicious of marketing as I am, it wears on your nerves quite quickly if you approach the book wanting to learn something about the diet. Additionally, Mr. Atkins' tone made it sound like the diet was a religion or a cult. This made me want to try it even less.

Secondly, Mr. Atkins also seems to be encouraging a sedentary lifestyle. In the portion of the book that I read, he never once mentioned physical activity of any sort other than eating. This turned me off, as I believe that one of the major sources of obesity, especially in highly "industrialized" countries, is lack of physical activity. In short, he does not promote a balanced lifestyle any more than a balanced diet.

Thirdly, Mr. Atkins makes several factual and logical errors. He mentions our ancient hunter ancestors, but fails to mention that they were also gatherers: fruits, roots, nuts, seeds, honey ... all with lots of carbs. And people 200 years ago may have consumed much less sugar than we do now, but he doesn't think that perhaps they weren't obese because of their diet, but because of the amount of physical activity demanded of the large majority of the population just to stay alive.

Fourthly and finally, the book gave me no information I could not have found on the internet.

To sum up, is the book worth your time and money? You be the judge, but for me, it wasn't; I can recommend neither the book nor the diet.

I picked up this book in a health food store while my wife shopped around. My mother has cancer so I thought it would be appropriate to read and potentially buy for her. After reading the first few pages I knew I needed to read the rest of the book, and not just for her but for myself. I learned so much about the design of the body and how it all fits together as a whole. This book is not just for those with cancer, but for those who don't want to get cancer. If this book be true then not only is cancer treatable, but much more like the common cold than ever imagined. A strong immune system will defeat a common cold quickly, and likewise a strong immune system will defeat cancer before you even know you have it.

The author sells false hope to cancer patients. The trade off for this false hope is a horrible way for terminal cancer patients to end their final days. Actually have *fewer* days since the enemas and diets promoted by this detoxer naturopath will rob patients of calories when they need then most.

There are monsters out there that know they can sell anything to desperate people, especially if they dress it up in religion.

It is far better to get real medical care, drink milk shakes, and spend your hard-earned money on a beach vacation.

Before purchasing them, a friend loaned me "A Cancer Battle Plan" and the follow-up "Sourcebook" and my health has been forever altered! I was diagnosed with Stage 1 Breast Cancer in the summer and after thoroughly investigating what oncology had to offer (further assault on my immune system and an almost certain expectation of MORE cancer in the future, I opted for the NATURAL AND VERY SUCCESSFUL treatment plan of detoxifying my system and altering my lifestyle to prevent further damage. I AM CANCER FREE without chemo or radiation --- and I'm healthy and more vital than ever!
I have been working directly with Health Quarters Ministries in Colorado Springs as well as local nutritionists and my health-promoting-chiropractor. I am more certain than ever: this is the way to go!! You're guaranteed better health!!

I now understand WHY organic foods are essential (pesticides on our fruits and vegetables react in the body like hormones, and breast cancer [as well as prostate and some others] is a hormone-receptor cancer. I UNDERSTAND the dangers we have allowed into our lives and I'm WILLING to exchange health for convenience --- our bodies are fearfully and wonderfully made to fight [all] diseases if we give it the right tools (nutrition) to be healthy!

BEFORE YOU CONSIDER TRADITIONAL [failing] MEDICINE --- GIVE THIS PROGRAM A "COLLEGE TRY" --- YOU WON'T EVER BE SORRY YOU DID!!!!

I strongly believe "ALTERNATIVE" therapies should be employed FIRST --- not after Western Medicine has failed (and it doubtless will and historically has ... )!

There is no "MONEY" in natural cures --- that's why they are not promoted on TV or by the medical field. "Follow the Money" if you want to be disillusioned and disappointed by all that so-called modern medicine has to offer. (More often leading to an awful quality of life and ultimately a terrible death ... DON'T DO IT!)

I love this book! It is the best natural approach to cancer I have read. It gives the details you need to recover with diet, and she doesn't try to sell you anything, you can do it all with a juicer. There were two other books I had read that talk about the protein connection to cancer, The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health and Cancer: Curing the Incurable Without Surgery, Chemotherapy, or Radiation, but this one is by far the best. I would, and do recommend it to anyone I know with cancer.

This is a quick, easy read with basic, valuable informative for those unfamiliar with the differences between a Western medical approach to cancer (suppress the symptoms) and a holistic one (remove the cause).

When my 8-year-old dog was diagnosed with cancer and given 6 weeks to live without surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, I instead followed the same holistic approach this book describes. Like this author, not only did my sweet canine survive, she thrived. Eleven years later, she died peacefully in my arms, 1 week before her 19th birthday.

In my opinion, this is an important read for anyone who is unfamiliar with tissue cleansing or a live food diet. Why wait until you have cancer to read it? Read it now and drastically decrease the chances of ever getting cancer!

Lots of Routines

Review Date: 2003-09-30
I have read a few body-building books and think this one, along with the other books in the same series (arms, legs, abs, etc), are the best to date.

One reason for this is the insistence upon good form. Like a lot of people, I have in the past gotten carried away with adding more weight and not paying attention to form. This is still a temptation but the message on good form presented in this book is finally starting to stick. I especially was impressed by his argument for paying attention to the negative part of the exercise.

Another STRONG point of the book is that it provides you with lots of routines. After finishing the books 6 week course,
you are supplied with an additional 4 or 5 good routines for future use. As the author states, it is important to change routines often, so that your muscles do not get too used to a given exercise (and you dont get bored). However,
I am very lazy about putting together routines and tend to stick to one. Thanks to this book this is no longer a problem, because it does it for me; I now have complete sets of routines that I can follow and am beginning to see important gains as a result.

The book also does a good job of covering the basics of good nutrition, rest and, for all of you gym rats who would ignore it,
aerobics (ever see those pudgy cro-magnon loking guys in the gym who claim their bloated tummies are muscle)!!!! He doesn't cover supplements though and that is understandable given the controversy and hype surrounding so many of them.

An Excellent and Easy to Follow Handy Guide on Chest, Back & Shoulders Training

Review Date: 2006-08-07

The book delivers what it promises: An Intense Six-week program to completely train your Chest, Shoulders and as a bonus the Back. Yes the book title doesn't mention the Back at all, but the programs include exercises for the "latissimus dorsi" or just "lats" as they are usually call in gym jargon. This alone makes this a complete upper body exercise program, since the "latissimus dorsi" is what gives the upper body its V-shape, and is the largest upper-body muscle, so large that the core training program hits it from three different ways.

But this book is more than just an upper-body workout, it is a small, handy and complete reference with useful information that includes: essential physiology, aerobics, flexibility stretches, and essential principles and techniques.

If you are interested in similarly practical and complete exercises programs for the rest of your body, you may also want to consider "Essential ABS", "Essential Arms", and "The complete Butt and Legs" by the same authors.

An excellent book for beginners

This is the 2nd book on weight lifting I've read. The first one being "Muscle Logic" which was both difficult to grasp as a beginner, and also a very unrealistic program to actually accomplish (read it and you'll see why you couldn't do this unless you owned your own gym).

But essential chest and shoulders is not like that at all. It is written for guys like me who knew virtually nothing regarind weight training. It gives excellent introductory material regarding the muscle groups and strategies and general fitness information.

The program that it gives is a 3-day a week program, 2 focusing on chest and shoulders, and the 3rd day on other muscle groups. The program is easy to follow, starts simple and gets more in depth as the time goes. But not overwhelming for beginners.

The program does focus on chest and shoulders, so if you were interested in lower-body, abs, or arms, you may want to look at another book (which the men's health publisher makes virtually identical books for both arms and abs).

Most of the exercises are performed with dumbells. And the book is designed for someone who is just getting started, and can be performed solo if you don't have a partner (its a lot easier to escape dumbell bech presses at an early level than a bar if you don't have a spotter, but its good to have a spotter).

The plan is again, fairly simple and designed for beginners. Experienced weightlifters will not gain anything from this book. If you're looking for a starting point, this is for you.

A Healthy Lifestyle Really Is Delicious and Satisfying!

This might be considered a diet if you've been eating unhealthy and unaware of the basic tenets of good nutrition, however to us, it was a re-configuaration of much of what we already knew and were doing, but in a way that has helped us to drop excess weight and feel like our old bright and bouncy selves!

There are companion books you can get from the Mayo Library of Books. I suggest getting a few if you love cooking and want kitchen excitement. However, this book is much more than excitement. It is a simple and common sense approach for PEOPLE.

People like us. We love NFL games! We support our local high school's and our local university's various sporting and arts events. We like big bright holiday celebrations, we love to grill and entertain. We are not athletic, but enjoy fun exercising. We might not walk our neighborhood, but we will walk in botanic gardens or bigger city parks with lots of things to interest us.

This is a motivational book as much as anything. It really is geared to just plain ol' people! It isn't written for the froo froo people of the world, or the natural wanderers of the mountains and national parks, or the bean sprout organic types, it is for ALL of us. From the most picky irritating people who are so fussy you wonder if they can smile unless it is alternative organic and natural, to the most coach potato cheese curl eating beer guzzling take a bath once a week types, to EVERYONE else in-between! (Psst.. I lived in WV for about 8 years, I have seen the later description as common place, and I lived in Boulder, CO for 22 years, and have seen the former description all the time too! Give me a balance please! LOL)

Enjoy making your life being just that.. enjoyable. You will find a new self confidence and cheerfulness deep within your own spirit. It comes with my highest praise and recommendation!

This Really Works!

I first came across this book under its previous title "Mayo Clinic on Healthy Weight" several years ago. It's marvelous food pyramid is based on energy or calorie density. This idea was the main ingredient on my path to losing 80 pounds and restoring my blood sugar level to normal following my diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes. An additional good idea is to apply the energy density principle to your plate by filling it with 50% non-starchy vegetables, 25% dense carbs and 25% protein. Another thing that I do is to use 50% Kellogg's All Bran or General Mill's Fiber One for my breakfast cereal. Energy density is particularly important to your selection of dessert. A half cup of pudding made with nonfat milk and sugar free mix is less than 100 calories. It is equally filling to a large chocolate chip muffin which comes in at 600 calories. Other useful books on energy density are the "Volumetic" series by Barbara Rolls, the "Fit or Fat Target Diet" books by Covert Bailey and Ronda Gates, and "The GI Diet" by Rick Gallop.

I can't say enough good things about this book. I had tried everything. I was fairly successful on the Body for Life program, but it took too much time. All I did on that program was eat and workout. I have a life. I need time for my family, work, continuing education and other activities. When I saw my life suffering at the expense of my body, I had to compromise the Body for Life program. I then ballooned back up to being obese. My doctor tried to talk me into a gastric bypass because my weight was getting so bad. This book from the Mayo Clinic gave me a diet that was very easy and had a lot of great food. I haven't even been tempted to wander from this program at all. The variety of food has filled my food addiction while also taking the weight off of me. I have been continually losing weight and my doctor is not worried about me at all now. She even just filled out a physical report stating that I am in very good health.

If you want good food, good health and time for a real life, this is the only book for you.

Whether or not you need to lose weight, this book is an excellent guide to healthy eating for life. The recipes are so easy that we're able to incorporate them into our everyday menus easily. We're all getting out 5-a-day, and then some! For weight maintenance, all you need to do is add a few more portions of some food groups. Even without reading the book, you can open up to the menu pages and start right away. You can also follow this plan on a tight budget since there aren't any hard to find or expensive ingredients. Between the eating plan and very helpful exercise goals, this has got to be the easiest way to get or stay healthy I've ever seen.

I first read this book in 1987, when it was initially published. I'd picked it up in a bookstore on Fifth Avenue (that's how well I remember the occasion, 16 years later), started to read, and couldn't put it down. So I bought what for me then was an expensive book and finished it that night.

It was difficult to know who to admire more after after I'd completed it, Ron Schmid, who so lucidly and modestly outlined the accomplishments of Weston Price (really, the centerpiece of the book), or Price himself, an extraordinary man whose self-supported, worldwide investigations of the food traditions of native cultures were nothing less than revolutionary in what they implied for how most of us eat--and live--today. In any case, I felt oddly moved by this book--a strange thing to say considering its subject--as if some real portion of an invaluable truth had been exposed to me.

Three years later, I used this book to develop an eating plan for my pregnant wife, including cod liver oil every day and a lot of fish and raw milk cheeses (the closest we could come, even in Manhattan, to any raw milk products). With all of that, our son decided to wait two weeks beyond his due date to make his appearance--21 1/2'' long and weighing over nine pounds--with the obstetrician remarking that my wife's placenta was twice the normal weight, in fact was the largest she'd seen in all her years of delivering children. I don't know whether either fact can be attributed to the diet my wife had followed, but the important thing is that our son turned out to be very bright, healthy, and the owner of a sweet temperament (our first clue of that being that he was effectively sleeping through the night when he was two weeks old)--qualities that this book suggest are not at all unusual when pregnant women follow traditional diets.

So, for me this book has some sort of talismanic power, the kind I associate with other profound life-transforming (or -generating) reading experiences. In that sense, I'm not particularly interested in challenging ANY part of it, as some others here have done, because I feel its general, encompassing theme is so strong and effectively expressed by the writer, and because, as far as I know, Schmid was a trailblazer in introducing (and explicating so clearly) Weston Price's work to the general reading public. I will add, though, that anyone interested in this book, should and even must buy a copy of Sally Fallon and Mary Enig's Nourishing Traditions, which extends Schmid's (and Price's) generalities into the American kitchen. It's as much a treasure as Schmid's book, as the two together, like Jack Sprat and his wife, cover everything (including how to think about fat), from principles to practicalities, that you might need to build new lives out of ancient practices.

I am a Registered Dietitian that uses a holistic approach to nutrition and I feel this book is a valuable addition to any nutritionists library. Lacks a bit of detail in research areas, but is a good branch of the Weston Price tree.

Great Compliment to Nourishing Traditions!!

This book can be a companion book to other books recommended by the Weston Price Organization. It is more or less an "encyclopaedic" type style to traditonal foods information using the Weston Price book as a guideline, but going into a more of an updated, and practical style.

There is a lot information that I found useful, such as the grading of salmon (which I never knew about), or getting calcium from eggshells to name just a few. However, he does not tell you how much calcium you are getting by eating eggshells. Also, I could never grind it to a powder in a blender as he said. I had better results with just a mortar and pestle.

On saturated fats, try as I might, I cannot find anything he has to say against the use of saturated fats as criticized by Fallon or Brynes. (Perhaps they have become somewhat fanatical about Price's diet). He is, however, against the modern way of raising animals which he believes is not the same as our ancestors. He points out that a lot of animal's mouths are being used as convenient garbage dumps, and proceeds to name all the types of garbage being eaten, that's right, garbage! This may alter the fat content, metabolism, ratios, etc., to a state that may not be healthy for you or the animals fed on such a diet. I agree on this point wholeheartedly! But, in no way do I see him telling us in the meantime to eat vegetables only and avoid all animal products! Properly raised animals that is.

There is also an explanation of the death rate of earliers years of how long Americans live are skewed. I never quite understood this, as I read about it in other books but there is no explanation how they concluded this, but he gives it here and it's so simple to understand! This should tip you off that this book is fairly lucid and logically written and I highly recommend it for a better overall view and guide to the Weston Price diet.

Schmid's book was the first one I read on the work of Weston A. Price and Francis Pottenger. It is a very good overview of the subject of Tradtional diets. If you are wondering what "Traditional diets" are, they are simply the way people ate before big business took over food production, and made shelf life and profit margin more important than the nutritional quality of food.

Price was a dentist who embarked on a decade long research project in the late 1930s to find the healthiest people on Earth and study what they ate and how they ate it. His studies ranged all over the world, covering all different races. Schmid has done a good job of giving an overview of Price's findings.

The only issues I have with this book are that Schmid falls for the cholesterol scam in discussing heart disease, and that he also falls for the idea that the term "life expectancy" as used in statistics means the average age of death. (page 66) It doesn't. Life Expectancy as an arithmetic average would be reasonably close to the median age of death in a perfect Bell curve population sample, but such perfect samples only exist on paper, not in reality. The median age of death, that is the age by which half of the population died, was 57 in 1900. This means that half the population lived to be 57 or older. Kind of different than saying the average age of death was 45-50. In 2000, the median age of death was only 78, so there hasn't been as much gain as we are led to believe. Neither figure addresses the health or quality of life of people at those ages, either. A minor point in the grand scheme of this book. His discussion of life expectancy differences for those 40 and over on the rest of the page is still very much true and sets the record straight on the PR hype we are given about our current state of health.

For more in-depth information on fats and cholesterol, I recommend Mary Enig's book, Know Your Fats.

This is a great book, and will open your eyes to a better way to eat and improve your health. I heartily recommend it.

I found Iuse this book in many ways: as a reference for food sources of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients (those compounds found in fruits, vegetables, and grains that provide health benefits), as a cookbook, or chapter by chapter to overhaul one meal or your entire diet. I found Magee's writing style to be inspirational.

I like the fact that Magee anchors her concepts by focusing on the research into foods and nutrients that fight the "big four" chronic diseases that strike Americans: heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer. This book provides guidance on how to eat for prevention or treatment of disease and arm you with the tools to select food combinations that can keep you healthy.

The book is loaded with tips on cooking, incorporating more whole foods into your diet, tips for eating more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, as well as many easy to make recipes. The appendices include the top food sources of nutrients and a 1500-calorie meal plan for those who want to lose weight.

This book presents a unique approach to getting the most out of the foods you eat.

Pleasantly suprised.

This book gives you the breakdown of everything you read in the news headlines regarding the whats and whys of vitamins and minerals and how they work together in your body to either help or hurt you. I never felt preached to by some 'doc' type. Written with the layman in mind. Very informative... So much so you may change the way you eat after this read!

While I found interesting things in this book about why people over-eat. It really didn't apply to my circumstances. This book focuses on those who use eating as a coping mechanism for their overwhelming lives. If you have been abused, feel guilty about your weight, or you are struggling with anxiety you will probably find this book very helpful. Otherwise, I would give it a pass.

An Eating Disorder Journey

This is the type of workbook for anyone dealing with an eathing disorder at any stage. Thought provoking questions and space for the answers. The authors created this workbook for a person to go through a few times and each section provides more introspection.
There have been times when I have answered the questions quickly in a chapter and others where it took me a month to finish. I began to notice different things and be more aware of what I was doing and connect with what was/is possible.
My nutrionist suggested this workbook because it is not about dieting, it is about living. Sounds corney but true! I have suffered from binge eating, anorexia and bulimia most of my life but I never focused my attention on how to live rather than get over my eating disorder.
I do recommend having another person to talk to while you are growing through this process. Some strong emotions have come up for me and I was happy there was a person who was there when I wanted to talk about it.

This book was recommended by a therapist. I have been struggling with ED for my entire life, not knowing why. From the first page, I was amazed with this book and came to an amazing realization that I am not alone in how I feel. Truly, this book has helped me gain so much understanding about myself. The workbook is great and the exercises relevant and progress you towards healing. I recommend it to anyone who has struggled with ED such as bulumia, anorexia, binge/compulsive eating and overeating in general.

This book is for someone that is struggling with personal image and use food as comfort. It was not really what I was looking for. I am dissapointed in the work book as it does not tailor my needs. However I do have friends that I think this book will really help and I will be passing the book on to them.

Every woman I know would benefit from reading this book.
The book is written by two therapists and focuses on the role of food and eating in our lives.

I used this book while attending a weekly meeting with other women interested in the topic. We read through a chapter a week and did the exercises at the end of each chapter.

I am a fan of Kim's and I've often read Lara's articles in Self, M&F Hers, etc., so I was very happy to see this book come out. Kim's considerate and smart coaching style really came out in this book; the one thing I love about her is that she seems so kind for someone so beautiful. They both did a superb job on this book.

The recipies were my favorite part and they were very yummy (although some looked better in the book than in my kitchen). The excercises were good although my favorite parts were the nutritional information and motivation segments.

Definitely a must have for anyone trying to improve their diets and/or excercise programs.

LOVE this book!

I think this book has a wealth of knowledge. It helps you set small goals to help you work towards the overall goal. It took me a minute to figure out the exercise part, because it doesn't list reps, you do what you can in 30 seconds. If you need to get motivated to move this is the book. She starts you out slow and you progress through the 12 weeks.

She makes me feel as if she is explaining this in person to me!

I really enjoyed reading this book. I'm a fan of "The Biggest Loser", so I wanted to read her thoughts on weight loss. The book is well-written and very easy to read. The book is divided into four subjects: It's All About You(Gear, Mind, Body, Goals; Journals; Fitness); Your Workout(Exercises); Your Nutrition (Food; Meal Planning); Your Future. I found the section on posture(Chapter 2) to be interesting. She goes into the different types of posture, which is helpful to me.....I have a swayback posture. She lists the muscles that I would need to work on to correct this bad posture. I haven't found too many authors who expound on this subject in a diet book. At the end of each chapter, she gives you "homework." Suggestions to help you prepare for this program, which ultimately is a lifestyle change. These suggestions are not mandatory, or hard to do. I am finding the "homework" is helping me to plan better and be well organized in my approach to beginning this program. This was lacking in my earlier attempts at losing weight. She is very big on planning and writing things down. There are three levels of weight training exercises, and there are some stretching moves. There are pictures of her performing each step to an exercise so that you do it correctly. I can't say that the information in this book is new, but it is the way that she presents it that makes the difference to me along with a few things that she does personally to motivate herself. I feel that the book is written as if she were sitting in a room explaining this in person to me. I felt her enthusiasm as I was reading. I've read other good diet books, but I can honestly say that I didn't feel any real enthusiasm coming from the authors. I think that this is a good book. She shows you how to safely go about losing weight, being healthy, and keeping the weight off for good. I highly recommend it.
